Chilly on Winfield: "I Want Him Here"
This week of OTAs capped off with Brad Childress continuing to publicly support Antoine Winfield while also stating that characterizing the negotiations between the cornerback and team as being at a 'standstill' may be inaccurate:
"I just think that [the word] negotiations [are] just what that means," Childress said. "It’s ups and downs and flat and people walking away, people getting back together. Nothing says that it’s 24 hours a day like it is in Congress when the government shuts down or the state shuts down. It’s negotiations."
"He’s a good player," Childress said. "I want him here right now. That’s the mother hen part of me."

Kick the negotiations into high gear, please!
I"m wondering if the Brett Favre dance has anything to do with this? The Vikings easily have enough cap space to handle both, but are they willing to? It seems that the contracts extension talks broke down the same time the Favre talks started. Coincidence or not?
At least people are saying the right things now and not refusing to negotiate.
It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a Viking to raze a village.
You're probably right
I believe the Vikes are sitting on $17mil in cap room, they still have to pay this years draft, and Favre will probably cost between $8mil and $10mil guaranteed.
Not only that, but they might be looking to save some money since next year is a “No-Cap Year”, and the Vikings still don’t have a stadium to play in come 2011.
I heard a rumor that it is not the dollars per year that is the main issue of disagreement but rather the number of years to be included in the extension, but since the negotiating goes on in private, I have no idea if that is actually true. Maybe with what Favre is doing, people are afraid Toine is thinking immortality in a whole ‘nother context. I don’t know what Winfield really means when he talks about “retiring a Viking.” When he’s 64?
Let's not rush through this...
Antoine Winfield has a contract to play in 2009. Brett Favre does not. Negotiation is a process like surgery, and you do not want your surgeon to rush through your operation unless you are bleeding out. No one is in immanent risk of death here. Taking the time to work things properly helps to avoid the case where people say they signed a bad deal later on.
+1
no reason to do anything right now. the vikings are going to see what he does this year and go from there. there’s no reason they can’t re-sign him next february or march right before free agency.

Unless he pulls a Birk and decides to leave because we took too long.
In AP I trust
Just say no to Favre.

I would really like to know
What kind of numbers they’re negotiating. I say offer Winfield a guaranteed $8mil for 2yrs, and an additional $1mil for each year he makes the pro bowl.
If they really really want to keep him, then they should offer him a guaranteed $10mil for 2yrs. Anything more than that really isn’t worth it…IMO.
that’s just it. winfield wants to retire a viking. he’s not going to sign a 2 year deal unless the vikings pony up like 12 mil a year which they’re not going to do. he wants a long term deal probably around 4 or 5 years and the vikings don’t want to give him that because of his age.
