The Offensive Line
Hey fellow Vikings Fans, here is something we haven't really talked about lately. I was wondering if anyone has any opinions or comments on how the offense line is coming together. I am most interseted to hear everyone's opinoin on Sullivan taking over at center for Birk. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill, and I have not heard to much about the big guys up front so far.
Thanks for any info you can provide and GO VIKES!!!!

Sullivan and Birk are both 6’4’’. Birk is 309 pounds, Sullivan is 301 pounds. Quite similar, wouldn’t you agree? I can’t wait to see Sullivan out there on the field.
I love Bryant McKinnie, I have no doubts about him.
Steve Hutchinson, enough said. Best guard in the NFL.
Anthony Herrera looked good last year. He’s huge, as well. Another great guard.
Philip Loadholt is probably the draft pick I feel most safe with. I didn’t think we needed Harvin, although wildcat could be freaking awesome. Hopefully we can sign him quickly and put him on the field. Ryan Cook – yuck.
Offensive Line Grade – B+
I can’t give is an A when Sullivan and Loadholt are unproven. But I am very optimistic heading into the season. =)
"He didn’t call me or anything. It was an accident, but a lot of people would have called to see how someone is doing after they got hit in the head. Especially if they had to go on the DL." — Morneau on pitcher Ron Villone after an April 2005 beaning.

I agree
all reports are very favorable for Sullivan. Even Birk had nothing but good things to say about the kid. then birk has always been a very classy guy, one of the reasons he will be missed, even if Sullivan is great.

Pass protection
I think our line struggled at times last season protecting the QB. Gus and TJ took some big hits back there last year and hope they can improve on this…

Loadholt
Was an awesome pickup. There was some pretty good value there. The draft did a lot of good things, but that could be huge.
I fully expect the running game to not lose a step. It was sad to see Birk leave, but I don’t think they lose all that much. I love that Sullivan is a smart guy as well. I guess I’m assuming he is, does anyone have an IQ or something on this guy?

I remember
Someone saying in a previous post he went to Notre Dame, so I would the chances of him being smart a pretty good.

ya, but
I have a sister who went to ND and she said that SOME of the athletes were not exactly on par with the rest of the students. But I do recall his intelligence being brought up in pieces written about him.

Right
That was one of my thoughts also. I’m sure a lot of the football players get in there more for their football skills then there unbelieveable intelligence. But from everything I’ve heard about him, he seems to be a pretty smart guy.

Upgrade from Last year...
As much as I love the hometown connection with Matty B, I saw a stat showing the percentage of snaps that Birk needed help with his block… I’m not sure if it was a product of the offense, as I am by no means a football genius, but the stat was up in the 60% range… The raw stat tells me that Birk is slipping, and it was the dominance of Hutch that kept the line from breaking… Again, I know the risk of taking a single stat in a vaccume, but that did seema bit high.
Love Loadholt, like Sullivan, Hererra seems to be getting better, don’t know about the mutton chops… The left side is solid, would like to see McKinnie a little better on passing situations, but speed rushers are slippery…

No offense, but....
…did you write this yourself? If so this is the best post I’ve ever seen from you!

No way he did.
I’m assuming you’re talking about Revenge. He even says, “The following article came from NFL GRIDIRON GAB,” so there you go.

was it the caps that gave him away?

my jury is still out on this group. i think sullivan will be equal or better than birk by the end of the season. loadholt will hopefully live up to his potential. even if he is only adequate it will be an upgrade on the right side.
you never can tell with guys who haven’t played at the nfl level. both could suck royally and we’re screwed or both could be pro bowlers and ap rushes for 3000 yards. in the end our see our line slightly better than last year.

Your run game
Should be even better then last year, which is going to be pretty scary. The reviews on Loadholt are that he is a great run blocker but struggles in pass blocking. I think your line could struggle in pass blocking though, at least initially. Sullivan will have to learn all the audibles and line shifts, and it might take him a while to recognize when he needs to call those audibles and line shifts. Loadholt also could be a question mark as far as pass blocking goes. I don’t think it’s out of the question to think that they could possibly be equal to last years line, or maybe even a little better.

yeah but there were a lot of great reviews on ryan leaf too.
i’m always very leary of rookies. i always assume they’re going to be a bust until they actually show that they are not.

That's fair and true
Though I think it’s easier for an o-lineman to make it in this league, then a QB.

Anyone going to give an over/under
on how many sacks that they WONT give up this year? That is alot of beef up front and they played great last year. I don’t see why they can’t be even better this year with Favre back there, he knows how to not get sacked ALOT better than last years QB’s in Minn.

Wait and see
Cook was not a bad run blocker…and from all reports that is what Load does so well. We need good pass blocking…so we may not see that big of and improvement here.
Sully…well he has big shoes to fill as another poster said….So again we will see. The up side to Sully is that the staff felt he was ready to take over for Matt….and outside of QB…they have been pretty good at judging the talent for the team.

Defenses beware! The Vikings are coming!!!
Sully is a better fit in the zone blocking scheme than Birk was but he is not as good at pulling and blocking on the move. Sully won’t be asked to do those anyway. He will benefit tremendously playing next to Hutch.
Loadholt will be an upgrade because he is a roadgrader in the running game and he will not get bullrushed like Cook did. True Loadholt struggles against speed rushers but he is not going to be facing them on the right side to much.
Cook now gives, along with Hicks, quality depth along the O-Line while some of the younger guys develope.
We are a run first offense which helps the O-line get in sync with one another. Chemistry is going to be the key here and with the starting line-up already set before training camp we are starting off on the right foot.
The additions of Harvin and Favre will be a major help because defenses will pay if they stack the box and if they don’t AD may just get his 2,000 yards.

two first time starters playing side by side still make me nervous.

Sullivan Replacing Birk
the nice part about the Center position is that it is probably the easiest as far as blocking goes. the hard part is that the center is in charge of being the brains of the offensive line with making changes and line shifts and from what I’ve heard from Kevin Siefert and reports from training camp Birk has taught Sullivan well and he knows all of his responsibilities
