2010 Draft
With the 32nd pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select....
So this question was brought up on a different thread, and I decided to do a fanpost / poll for it.
What position do you think the Vikings will pursue in next year's draft?
One could argue QB, because if BF comes, it will only be for a year or two max. After he leaves, the VIkings are right back at square one (AKA Sage/ Jackson)
One could argue DT, since Pat Williams is going to be 37 this season. The Viking's run D has been their calling card ever since Pat joined the team. Do we need to find a dominant replacement, or do the Vikings already have his replacement in waiting?
One could argue DE, considering the play of Ray Edwards last season.
One could consider OLB, since Leber is getting up there in age and he is only average to begin with IMO.
What would you do?

I say
We keep building on defense…we have the offense..well maybe Sage or TJ will be good after a year under mister favre
WR
If SIdney still dosent do anything we need a possession receiver and I really want Dez Bryant even though hes probably a top 5 or 10 pick.
we cant just drafting rookie
quarterbacks
we need to trade for a reliable young qb, i know those dont grow on trees but still
we need to get a replacement for pat williams so he ahs one year of learnign and then can take over
Agree Big Time!
With the team we have built, both young and solid all around, we could afford to trade a First Round pick or more to get a proven QB to lead us. They are hard to get though unless you have an odd situation occur, aka Cutler, Brady Quinn/Derek Anderson battle, etc.
Thinking ahead to next year what QB might be available?
If Dallas bombs again is Romo available for a nice offer? How about, even though I hate to say this, David Carr, he played a nice 2nd half against us last year. Maybe Matt Leinart? Could we wiggle Carson Palmer away if they have yet another weak season? Tyler Thigpen worth building further? And lastly Vince Young (aka TJack # 2)? Other than that the others worth considering are almost untouchable.
No way
Romo, Leinart, or Palmer are available.
Romo is (arguably) the face of the franchise and no way they let Palmer go, especially after how they preformed without him last season. And Leinart is a serviceable QB who should be playing once Warner is done in a year or two.

Somewhat agree
That’s kind of why I asked the question. There really isn’t much that is worthy that someone is going to let go. That is of course unless something weird happens like the Cutler situation.
Honestly, the only QB we may be able to get that might be worth a shot after this year may be Chad Pennington. The Dolphins have Chad Henne in waiting and in emergencies would have Pat White.
Agreed on the need for a good QB prospect…. but not a top draft pick because drafting at the ass-end of the pack isn’t going to get the Vikings a top-rated QB anyway.
Would love to have had Cutler, or Romo, or Palmer, but odds on those guys coming loose is pretty much zero. Might as well hope for Rothesberger or Rivers. Thigpen was a long shot when we had him, I see nothing in him that changes that. Young is a cry-baby, that’s demoralizing. Leinart is a question mark but it’s nearly impossible that he’d come free since Warner isn’t going to be a carefree youngster of 39 indefinitely.
I still like T-Jack, but I don’t know if he’d be smart enough to stick with the Vikes. If he’s any good, he should go for a 2 or 3 year contract, prove to the Vikes and the NFL that he’s worth keeping, then bargain for the big bucks.

The more I think about it, the more I don’t see anyone worth pursuing in a trade that might be available. The good ones won’t be available.
That being said, I am sure the Vikes management has thought about this and that brings up a big choice if Favre signs. Who do they cut loose? Obvious choice is Booty but I heard not long ago they were very impressed with his progression from year 1 to year 2. TJack they have too much invested in and Rosenfels they just gave up a 4th rd pick for which really isn’t much… Maybe they would trade Rosenfels and keep they two they are thinking about developing since Rosenfels is TJack without the mobility and arm.

1 more year
We need a little more time to figure this mess out, and the Vikings did say that they were looking to keep 4 QBs on the roster this year. Favre would make it 4. Next year, though, will be a different animal.
I really want to see what our current group can do… T-Jack and Rosenfels are, to me, both exciting prospects this year. Let me see a few games from both so that I can make an informed opinion, lol.

4 QBs is tough but I, like you, would like to see them before cuttitng or trading anyone.

Good defensive guys can be found in later rounds, for instance, here is a guy that is similar in size to Pat that could be found (currently) in the 2 or 3rd round, Boo Robinson. His official bio lists him at just under 300 pounds, but I have seen him listed as high as 326lbs. If you don’t like him, 2010 will be big year for DTs. Vince Oghobaase (Duke), Arthur Jones (Syracuse), possibly Lawrence Marsh (Florida) if he decides to leave a year early. Those three are at or near 300lbs and athletic play makers for their respective teams and are currently not considered 1st round prospects.
If the Vikings have a chance at one of the top 3 QBs (Bradford, McCoy, Snead) they should take one of them. Pining over what other teams are trying to get rid at QB hasn’t worked so far in the history of the Vikings and really, if a QB has a bad year next year (like say Romo) and the Cowboys want to get rid of him do you really want to spent high draft picks to bring him in? I guess the grass always looks greener and your neighbor will always have a cooler car. With few real needs (i.e. the Vikings won’t be looking to the draft to get a lot of starters, mainly depth) the Vikings could afford to move up if they find a guy they really like.
People will crucify me but...
I think we should draft tebow. He may not be the most picturesqe qb, but niether was flutie and he had success. Tebow’s a fantastic leader and one of the most beloved college players of all time and that’s the most important attribute a qb can have. He’s been working on his throwing motion I’m the offseason and he’s smart as a whip, that and McCoy and Bradford will be gone long before the vikings pick in the later portion of the first round. Him and Percy made magic together.

i’m not sure if he’s emotionally stable to play in the nfl…after he cried in the press conference after that one regular season loss last season.

Eh
I think that would be a big mistake. There has been so much talk of him not being an “NFL” QB. Then take into account your QB situation. I don’t see there being anyway you take him, because if he doesn’t pan out then Childress will definitely get fired.

The question is, will there be a good QB left once the Vikes select a player? I think we try to get someone who is the top tier of their position in the draft. Or basically the best player available that suits our needs.
yep
That’s the biggest issue with trying to get Tebow, too. Whether we like him or not, he’ll be one of the top QB prospects and not likely to last down to the middle of the draft. The Vikes aren’t likely to have a pick earlier than #20 so Tebow will be gone.
The only way around that is to blow a lot of games on purpose (reference: 1976/77 Tampa Bay Bucs) to get the best picks, or to trade away some valuable talent to get a better pick. Else it’ll take a lot of luck and prayer to hope that someone good slips through the feeding frenzy at the top.

If You Can't Beat Them, Draft Them
With the 32nd pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select Eric Decker, wide receiver, the University of Minnesota.
Apparently, Gopher alums have the money to build a football stadium. Throw them a bone.
DTackle
This kid may go top 10 so im not to sure the vikings would go get him, but id love for them to go after Suh(pronounced Sue) from Nebraska—Hes about as dominating as they come when it comes to DTs across the nation—power and speed—and would fit so nicely next to K Will— You guys keep an eye open on him this year.

Do you have any idea how stupid you look now that Favre didn’t sign? You wasted probably an hour or two a day talking about what he was going to do for the Vikings, and now he isn’t even going to play. I can’t take anything you say serious. I hope your still around after the season is over because I can again laugh at you for one of your stupid comments that doesn’t turn out to be true….again!
I was actually going to logically respond back to your comment but then I remembered all your comments are simply based off of what you would like to see, so why waste my time. You use no logic, stats, or knowledge about football when posting things on this site.

Draft the Best Player On the Board
Usually I don’t like teams drafting the best player left on the board; I think they should draft based on their needs. However, looking at the Vikings right now, there is no glaring need. Of course we have weak spots, but nothing huge. Therefore, I think we should draft based on whose the best player at the time we pick. You can always get other players later in the draft, through free agency, or through trade.

Exactly!
We already had Chester Taylor who was a very serviceable running back. I’m sure we had many more and bigger needs at the time. But i’m willing to bet we’re all happy with that decision =)

Glaring Need
The Vikings only have one position where a major talent is needed, and 95% of our drama is centered around that deficit. Unfortunately, there are no major talents in the QB position projected for next year and even if there were, the Vikes won’t have a high enough draft pick to get him, so it’s trade or no deal.
With the above consideration, I agree that BPA is the way to go.

Truth Be Told
Maybe we could try and move up in the draft next year to get a QB…although, I don’t really like that idea….getting rookie QB’s from the draft is often hit or miss…there have been more 1st round QB failures than successes i’m willing to bet
by Loki The Viking God on Jul 28, 2009 9:48 AM CDT up reply actions
that's true
we don’t necessarily need a high draft pick to get a good qb. for every manning there’s a brady.
by iseepurplepeople on Jul 28, 2009 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions
Scouting
You need some top scouting talent to spot the Bradys, though… and more of them go bust than the Mannings.
Then again, who knows… maybe we won’t need to, we still have both T-Jack and Rosey and either of them could break out this year :)
