Jaymar Johnson?? Who Would Have Thunk It
There has been a lot of buzz about the Vikings over this off season; the pending suspensions over Kevin and Pat Williams, the quarterback battle between Sage and T-Jack (very early), Percy Harvin's health, BRETT FAVRE, and the contract negotiations with Antoine Winfield. But now there is one more, Jaymar Johnson. If you can't recall ,he is a 2nd year, 6th round reciever out of jackson state. He was one of the quickist recievers in his draft class, and had a lot of potential to be a productive reciever. Although he spent all of his first season on the practice squad, now all of a sudden he is getting some attention by some big name people. Earlier this month Larry Fitzgerald Jr. held a little training camp at the new TCF bank stadium on the U of M campus, and the main trainer of that camp just happened to Chris Carter. He didn't make to many comments but he did mention young Johnson a few times. In fact, he is already catching the eye of some NFL anylists. This year he has a serious chance of making the roster, and make a serious contribution to the team.

But yeah, I hope Jaymar and Sidney can have breakout seasons. It’s almost as if we won’t have enough football to go around in this offense.

Jaymar Johnson sounds great,
but where would we put him? We already have Berrian, Harvin, Rice, and Wade ahead of him.
"He didn’t call me or anything. It was an accident, but a lot of people would have called to see how someone is doing after they got hit in the head. Especially if they had to go on the DL." — Morneau on pitcher Ron Villone after an April 2005 beaning.

Ahead of at least 2 of Harvin, RIce and Wade
Harvin may be ok or great later, but may be limited to Wildcat gimmick plays. Or he may turn out to be a typical Florida bust like Reidel Anthony, Chad Jackson, Reche Caldwell, Andre Caldwell, Jaquez Green, Ricky Nattiel…
Rice showed almost nothing last year.
Wade has nice hands, but struggles to get open, and now he’s another year older and possibly slower.
Jaymar should get a chance to be at least the #3.

Ya now we can use the 5 wideout set that Favre liked in his last year at GB.

We could use a nice return man...
...add #4 to the mix and see what you get... Championship.

Wade would be the one out, i think Johnson would make a better reciever than wade

Wade isn't going anywhere, Allison will be the one gone
Johnson is not a slot reciever like Wade, but he gives us something we haven’t heard of in a long time from our WR crew, “Speed kills,” His 4.32 speed is going to help stretch the field. Think of it: Berrian, Harvin, and Johnson on the outside, with Peterson in the backfield. What are defenses to do? (I’m just talking from a speed standpoint)

You think Johnson would make a better receiver than Wade based upon what? The fact that he is doing well in the offseason?
No offense, but we have yet to see Jaymar play a single down in the NFL and Bobby Wade is a completely different type of receiver.

could he throw it deep enough?
or would Jaymar Johnson out run the ball :)

All those receivers
it’s a problem a lot of teams would like to have

no sych thing as too much talent
so I hope he plays up to his potential. What team has ever had too many good WR’s?

Behind Berrian, Rice, and Wade - Ahead of Harvin Initially
Johnson looked great pre-season last year both as a receiver and return man. He has a little experience nearly made the roster last year. My best guess at this point it he will get the #4 spot and Harvin will be #5 at the start of the season. Harvin might move up later in the year, but as rookie and learning multiple positions I don’t see him being high on the roster to start. The only guy with a real chance to knock Johnson off the roster is Allison. If both perform well, they might even keep 6 receivers. Harvin obvioulys will make the team as he’s has value at other positions and is expected to develop, not to mention face value to being a 1st rounder. I should also mention I don’t think Harvin won’t be used. I just expect him to be limited to 15-20 plays per game for the 1st half of the season and maybe increasing slowly after that.

Could Carte be tooting his own horn?
I respect his opinion but he is also running business. I sure hope Johnson is all they are building him to be. Then again, we knew he had speed but transfering what you learned in a camp into the game is 2 differnt movies.

Bobby Wade
If we get rid of him then we are basically down to Sidney Rice for possesion recievers and/or slot guys.

+1
Bobby does the little things that don’t get all the glory but move the ball.

Harvin is your future slot receiver
Harvin should be developed into the slot receiver with the potential to be moved to half back on some plays, Nickelbacks and linebackers on him would be a nice mismatch with his potential yac ability.
Eventually Wade will get phased out but for the time being he will still be out there.

I really like the idea of lining Harvin up in the slot, with Taylor in the backfield. Then motioning Harvin back to the H-Back position and using Taylor for a fullback.
That would create a bit of a mismatch that we could take advantage of/

Even better, line up in shotgun with Jimmy K. as an off the line tight end and Harvin in the slot. Motion Harvin into the backfield and run behind Sass, our best open field blocker. This could either be an off-tackle run on the side Sass lines up, or a counter with Sass pulling to the other side.

I agree, to a point.
The only reason I think Chester would be a better option, despite his obvious difference in blocking ability, is because he is a bit quicker and more agile than Flyingsasser and might be better considering Harvin’s explosiveness.

As much as I like Johnson, I have to keep it real...
First, there is nothing more that I want than for him to succeed but I have to be honest with myself and remember that he did play Div. II ball and didn’t exactly tear up the league. True he was a great punt returner and he was doubled covered most of the time, I again have to remind myself he hasn’t played an NFL down yet and faced an NFL defense either. I love his upside, and that he is a great person. I feel he may become a fixture on our offense, and special teams for years to come and that is what I am looking forward to see. Go Vikes!!!

I like the receiving corps you guys are building.
Not too big on Wade, personally. But with Harvin, Rice and/or this Johnson kid, to go along with Berrian. That’s a pretty young grouping with a tremendous upside.

as much as i like berrian
i would have to say we don’t have a true #1 receiver. maybe i got spoiled during the carter/moss years but i see berrian as a really good #2 and he’s currently our best receiver. i think we have a slew of potential #2’s and #3’s but no true #1.
by iseepurplepeople on Jul 28, 2009 10:52 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
But Berrian has the potential to be an elite #1 in the league if one of our QB’s can throw to his speed with consistent accuracy.
by Loki The Viking God on Jul 28, 2009 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
this could be true
he never had consistent qb play in chicago and we don’t throw that much. my gut just tells me he’s the #2 guy that runs the outs and does it very well.
by iseepurplepeople on Jul 28, 2009 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think if Berrian put on a few pounds
That might help him solidify # 1 status.
I mean, he has great hands, good speed and excellent open-field agility and vision. If he could add some strength to his repertoire he would be more useful.

BB
His injury record worries me… he was drafted in 2004, and was injured in 2005, 2006, and 2008 (not sure about 2007). More than half his NFL career he’s been injured and not playing his best. Last year he went through a lot of ups and downs. I know he was brought in to be the speedster, but he didn’t show that he had it in him til the latter part of the season, then I think he got hurt again at the end. I’d like to see him start the season without injuries and stay that way.
Ah, ah,

Larry Fitzgerald's comments on Jaymar
This is what Larry Fitzgerald had to say in response to a question about Jaymar on Twitter on 07/17:
“jaymar is lightening fast & quick with solid hands.”
He added some muscle to his frame in the offseason, so it’ll be interesting seeing if he’s able to handle return duties without going down at first contact like he did last year in preseason.
That Jaymar and Sydney Rice were the ones learning from Cris Carter and Larry Fitzgerald makes me think somebody has identified them as the guys with more potential (as opposed to Allison or Reynaud).
