Charles Gordon Waived - Good luck to him
Charles Gordon got waived today. While it was likely a roster spot opening to sign another play (can't imagine who that might be), I do want to state that I felt Gordon had made noticeable improvements both as a corner and returner. When he broke his ankle, I think we all knew it could be career ending or at least something that would set him back more than one year. So, he probably would have had a tough time making the roster this year, but I wish him well. You hate to see it end like that.

bummer
i like gordon. i thought he was progressing well. there’s anothing bust on the ’can’t lose your job to any injury’ theory.

Bad move
They could always put him on the PUP or IR if he wasn’t going to be back this year, but they did not need to cut him. He was a decent nickel/dimeback and punt returner…could even contribute as a WR in the Wildcat. I hate it when teams cut guys who really need the money the most while recovering from injuries.
He was the only decent back-up for starting CB
He’s been our only decent option to take over for a potential injury to Winfield/Griffin the last couple years. I really hope our starters stay healthy or another CB steps up. I think not having Gordon as a Nickle last year was a big part of our coverage problems. The other big issue being N. Harris in coverage. EJ Henderson will be back this year, but who will be a good nickle?
hopefully asher allen pans out and mccauley gets better. he wasn’t so hot last year. gordon beat him out for the nickel spot.

We have a wide open competition for nickle back, but I think you’ve picked the guys that are the best prospects long-term. One of them needs to become starting material in 2-3 years, since I don’t expect Winfield to be paying every down longer than that. I’m glad Griffin picked up his game last year, it was key to our improvement in pass defense. Now we need the rest of our coverage to match our starting safeties.
Gordon
I hate seeing him let go because I think he had some real potential for the Vikings, but the business considerations never end. I don’t know all the details of the case, but it looks like a textbook example of one of the biggest issues that the NFLPA is always trying to improve; taking better care of hurt players.

Well well well
If we just had say 10 million dollars laying around we could get 2-3 top corners or one washed up has been locker room primadona QB. Welcome Favre

and then cut two other guys becuase we signed 3 guys instead of one
Just out of curiousity, where to we get those “2-3 top corners” that are just lying around waiting to be offered contracts? Do you think there is some aisle at the Mankato WalMart where they are all lined up shrinkwrapped or something?
Serioiusly, has your Favre hatred blinded you so much that you don’t even think about what you write any more?
good corners can be found
at corners ’r us! of course!

Needed to be cut...
If I understand the CBA correctly, Gordon needed to be cut to start drawing on his disability pay. I like the guy, but it’s hard to hold on to him when you have no idea if he will ever be right again. The article said that he can’t run without a limp yet. I’ve blown out both ankles at different stages of my life, but not to the degree that Gordon did his, and my first one bothered me for 3-4 years and still gives me a little trouble if I’m playing aggressive ankle sports like BB or soccer… Point being is that the ankle is such a big part of what he did that he’d need a 100% recovery to even be a nickle/dime CB… If he was healthy I would have loved to have seen him fight for a spot, but with Asher Allen, Benny Sapp, Marcus McCauley, Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin all probably ahead of him on the depth chart, there isn’t room for him anyway… Don’t forget we also added Karl Paymah in the offseason, so there will be a battle for the last CB spot or two…
good info
wasn’t aware of the cba issue, thanks. that makes me feel a wee bit better.

You just hate seeing guys taken out like that. Good luck to Charles Gordon, I hope he recovers fully, whether or not he returns to the NFL.
