Take a knee, or have a drink on me!
Like I've said from the very beginning I am a fan of the NFC north first and formost, and with that being said I have a favore to ask of ANY AND ALL fans that go to training camps across the nation. I just received my Sports Illistrated issue for this month and I found a very interesting article on the very last page, If any of you get S.I. then you have already read this and probably know where I am going with this post. It's an article by a lady named Selena Roberts and she brought up a bad memory for ALL FANS of football, but this one touches home with Viking fans more than any. I'm not going to get indepth on the article itself, but I don't want the efforts of one lady by the name of Kelci Stringer to go unheard. I'm sure with that last name you all just guessed what I'm talking about. This lady has taken on the NFL and many other factions of the league to keep players hydrated so that NO ONE ELSE has to die of heat stroke. The article is sad in a way because it reminds us that our hero's of the grid iron are nothing more than mortal men just like you and me. I really wanted to get a message to either GONZO or ANTHONY21 to have them do a article on this but I don't know how to do that yet. On the 1st of next month it is the 8th aniversary of the death of the late great Korie Stringer A mountain of a man that had a huge heart on and off the field. So without getting all sappy and all this is my favore that I ask: PLEASE WHEN YOU GO TO CAMPS EVERY HOUR OR SO(pending heat) START TO CHANT WATER WATER WATER or something of that nature. In the article it talks about how by her presistance she has gotten the NFL to make damn sure that there is more fluids taken by all players, but at the same time it is still seen as weekness by the coaches if any player asks for water. I don't understand why it is that way but I know that it is. So help a former players wife and make sure that your hero's stay hydated during these hot and humid days especially if they are running 2 a days. Thank you sincerly Scotty Davis a lions fan!

2 Seasons at Bucs Camp
Went to watch a dear family friend try out for the Bucs. It was unbearable to stand there in the heat. It made you think what those players went through with pads. I noticed the freedom of players to grab a water bottle when waiting in a line. Goups rotating to the water station for mandatory water intake and a deep chilled cooling tent for team breaks and short intermission meetings.
In Minnesota it can be devieving how much body fluid you are using. Many players use dierutics to increase water loss to lose weight, which can be dangerous when working out. I believe I heard Cory was doing this and it is exactly what I think the Williams were doing with the Starcaps fiasco.
Not blaming Cory in any sense, lots of athletes at all levels do this for making weigh limits. But, a warm summer day in Minny with low humidity , doesn’t feel that bad to some players. With little realization they are losing fluids and making themselves ill in the process.
I think Korey was using Ephedra, which is not a diuretic but surely not something you should be taking during a heat-intensive practice session.
In my opinion, the Vikes did their due diligence in making sure their players are well hydrated, but when you are on something like Ephedra, the risks increase dramatically.
Ephedra
…is not a pure diuretic, but it is a stimulant which has been used for weight loss. Whether one is trying to fool the scale by dehydrating the body with a diuretic or by overstimulating one’s metabolism (which indirectly increases water loss via greater body heat and metabolism), it is dangerous and unproductive.
Besides, dehydrated players are more prone to cramps and decreased energy levels. Any smart coach should want players who want their bodies working for them 100% so that they can give 100% on the field. Any coach who sees drinking the proper amount of fluids as weakness does not deserve his job.
1 more part of the story
The reason that you saw those water rotations and tents are due to his wife, She got alot put in from the pro level all the way down to the pop-warner leagues. I thought that article was very touching and just thought that we should all think about things like what these guys go though jst to get to play. And for what ever it’s worth the article mentioned that the temp on the day that Stringer died it was 99 and humid, I don’t know if thats uncommon at this time of the year in Minn, being that they are on the other side of the great lake and we get sheltered alot from those lakes here in michigan.
Valid points
Bu tI gotta tell ya. We were fishing in Minny many years back. All was well, warmer than usual and I was feeling sick on the way home. Tuning into the new we discovered it hit 102 that day-In Minnesota!. Why I didn’t feel it to be that hot .I have no idea. Way different than here in Florida. You can step out and guess the temp within a couple degreees.
Humidity? Cooler mornings in Minn that sneak up on you when it gets hot?
All the same it was a very sad day and Cory was a great loss. Maybe others will not suffer the same fate from lessons learned.
it is still seen as weekness by the coaches if any player asks for water. I don’t understand why it is that way but I know that it is<\blockquote>
i’m an old school guy and i think i can explain this. prior to the 90’s it was perceived by coaches and trainers that water would make you cramp (which it will if you drink a lot at once on an empty stomach during practice). when i played in school we had one water break during each practice and that was it. a lot of guys would use the ‘going to the bathroom’ or ‘getting a drink’ excuse to get out of suicides or whatever. the coaches knew this and knew from their time playing in the 50’s and 60’s that this was a ruse used then as well. if you were a starter or trying to win a spot you didn’t go to the bathroom or get a drink during practice. this showed the coach how tough and committed you were.
these ideas have been disproven but it still takes time for these things to fade away. thinking back to my playing days i can see where some coach might say ‘what? you need another drink?’ it was just ingrained in these guys. i’m advocating not hydrating properly, just trying to explain where this mentality comes from to those who never experienced it.
