Preseason Game 1 Thoughts?

Vikings starters dominated.  I know it is only preseason but the defense had me pretty excited.  They only had six plays with three of them resulting in sacks.  It reminded me of old school Tecmo football where you pick the offense's play and jump all over it.  Can't wait to see them in a full game.

Starters were very efficient on offense.  I'd like to see them convert on 3rd instead of needing 4th down.  I did like how they mixed up the play calling as far as passing in some normal Vikings rushing downs.  Let's face it, Rosenfels is the Vikings starting QB.  He looked confident and in control of the game offensively.  Nothing fancy.  He just threw solid catchable balls and let the recievers do their thing. Jackson on the other hand looked like Jackson at his worse.  Sure it was second team but superman couldn't have caught some of the passes he threw.  Poor guy.

Berrian injury troubles me because those hammy's can linger.  Harvin not playing was a disappointment as that was my biggest reason to tune in.  Loadholt did not look good to me at all.  Yikes that might be a serious problem this year.  He was beat easily by the second team end on two or three plays.

I really think this team could be something special this season.  I thought they had a good shot beginning of last season and they pulled it off after a poor start.  But this season I feel like they should have the division easily and could be trying for bigger things.

Total Dominance!

I take everything in pre-season with a grain of salt

I remember that in 2005, Daunte Culpepper had a pre-season that made him look like a first ballot hall of famer, and I remember jokingly saying stuff like ‘Randy who?’

Uh, yeah, well, uh…that didn’t work out so well. I just want starters to come out healthy. Everthing else is gravy.

Yeah, this is very true. Another note: Last season the Lions went undefeated in the preseason. We all know how that turned out.

Not to say we’re the Lions, but you do have to temper your enthusiasm a bit. Another note, I recall Jackson having an amazing pre-season his rookie year. So. . . again, don’t go crazy because of one preseason game.

In defense of TJack

He is playing hurt. That can lead to some rough plays.

Having said that, I think Sage played stellar. That is exactly what I have been waiting to see from a QB. Someone who doesn’t need alot of pizzazz. Someone who simply gets the ball where it needs to go and allows our defense to do what it does best.

Hurt? What happened to him?

That being said… if he’s so hurt that he can’t accurately throw the ball, he shouldn’t be in the game. Granted, most of today’s QBs are a pack of pussies in comparison to the QBs of the 70s and earlier, where it wasn’t surprising to see a QB playing with broken ribs, or a broken ankled taped into rigidity, or even throwing with broken fingers.

I thought T-Jack’s injury last week was minor… or did he get another injury?

He was also playing with the second offense

Most of the time he wasn’t even getting to the receiver part of it though… It looked like he was trying to keep a run option open behind him most of the time, rather than stepping up into the pocket. The result was that he found himself right in the path of the Colts’ DTs.

He had Rice and Kliensasser and Johnson for receivers, but nothing clicked for him.

how about

Ian Johnson’s play….9 carries for 50 yards against alberts 14 carries for 58 yards. What they should do is bench AD and Chester until game 3 and start Albert for the 1st half next game and Johnson for the 2nd half. Then in the 3rd game start Albert for the 3rd quarter and Johnson for the 4th or the other way around.

Gotta love it :)

I was only able to listen to the game, but the Vikes RBs were running amok last night, and Albert Young sounded amazing :)

RB's

I was mildly impressed by Ian J and Albert Young. But both of those runners are kind of patient into the hole shuffle the feet and grind out a few yards types of players. I prefer the downhill hit it hard type RB’s like AP.

And yes it is only preseason but you still can get excited to watch it. You can also get a feel for what some players can and can’t do as far as individual matchups go. And I got the feeling that Sage wants the starting job worse than TJack. Jackson played like a guy trying not to lose his job.

Finally!

Was able to dl the game and watch it :)))

On the down-side, it was billed as “Colts Football”, and the announcers made it clear that they were totally in the tank for the Colts, despite it being an NFL broadcast. That was disappointing, having Viking action taking second place to anything blue & white, whenever possible.

On the plus side…. as far as I’m concerned, it was VIKINGS FOOTBALL! HAH! Damn but I missed it.

My take on the game;

T-Jack looked bad… really, really bad. Maybe he needs some time to warm up, we’ll know in weeks to come, but this game was definitely not his finest hour. It was as if the Colts smelled blood in the water, the only time he looked alright was when he was handing the ball off.

Jaymar Johnson didn’t impress either. I was expecting much better after all the training camp hype. On ST he just ran straight into the pileups, and as a receiver he wasn’t demonstrating very sure hands. Reynaud was even more lackluster.

Berrian was out with a limp really quick so we saw little of him, and Rice looked like a 3rd string backup rather a #2 first stringer.

Ryan Cook continues to play in a fashion that tells the whole world he wants to be cut from the team. The guy is a penalty magnet.

On the positive side of the slate;

How ’bout that Sage Rosenfels! The man just inspires confidence with his play, most of the time. That head-first diving thing needs to change, but other than that… good man. He looks like a starter to me.

AP was consistently stuffed but he ran alright. CT rocked the Colt’s world. Ian Johnson and Albert Young both looked very good, it’ll suck if the Vikes have to let either of them go. I only saw Kahil Bell for a couple plays, he looked alright but nothing spectacular.

The O-line seemed to hold fairly well for Rosey, and not at all for T-Jack. T-Jack didn’t hold onto the ball that long, he just didn’t seem to have the support.

The D was magnificent, especially i the first quarter when it was Colts and Vikings starters. Manning was NOT a happy camper, the Vikes seem to have started a “Let’s Meet at the QB Club” :))) . Both our Henderson Bros were looking hot, nice to see what Erin can do. And of course, the Amazing Flying E.J. is always fun. All the LBs were on it, in fact.

The secondary was pretty sharp. Would still like to see more interceptions, but all in all, they were tight. Much better than expected. Allen and Paymah both came on very strong, especially. That was really good to see, I was worried about that aspect of the game.

Heath Farwell was a beast on ST and as a regular LB, and Kluwe was producing some serious hang-time, FINALLY. Special Teams were very solid. Longwell was his usual reliable self, and the second string kicker (who’s name I forget), botched a 53yrd (or thereabouts) FG on his second try; not impressive.

I’m really looking forward to our next game, hopefully the areas that needed help will get some extra practice time in, and everyone will come out with all cylinders firing!
