Chilly the Chump

I will start off by saying I think this is going to be a disastrous move for the Vikes.  Now if brittfar manages to get them to the superbowl I will be the first to admit I was wrong and as much as I have disliked him in the past, I'll take  a superbowl victory any way I can get it.  I just don't think it's gonna happen and I will let Favre's record in the playoffs speak for itself.

However I want to focus on one aspect: the credibility of the coaching staff.  Favre has made them look like chumps.  He clearly just didn't want to go through training camp, and apparently he can do whatever he wants.  Childress said he wanted a decision by camp, Favre gave him one, and he said that is the end of it.  Now, training camp over, Favre waltzes in and says he's ready to play.  How can Childress have credibility in the locker room?  How will the players be able to believe anything he says?  How will they react to the fact that Favre is clearly held to a different standard than the rest of the team?  One of the reasons I think this is a disaster is that it has the potential to destroy any semblance of locker room chemistry, and that will be important late in the season when the going gets tough.  If they hit a rough stretch in the middle of the season how will they hold together?

I want to be wrong, but I think this has a real potential to backfire, and if the season implodes the ownership group is going to look like fools and they will be the L.A. Vikings in 2012.  It's a big gamble IMHO.

You're Wrong On So Many Levels

It seems like everyone in the Vikings locker room has wanted Favre to come on board except for the QB’s. Also, Favre as a Viking will sell more tickets at a higher price and that will make building a new stadium easier then if Favre wasn’t a Viking.

Good points. However, this is still a bad move.

I’m with Loki. You’re wrong. The coach’s & GM’s jobs are to build a winning team. And do whatever it takes. You’re acting like this is some big surprise in the locker room, that it’s causing all this anguish. But we already know thanks to Glazer that it ain’t. People have alrady accepted it, and Glazer couldn’t find anyone that was all hot and bothered like you are insisting they must be.

Put bluntly, it’s YOU that is bothered by it, NOT the Vikigns players (overall), and in the end how YOU feel don’t matter to whether they win or lose. Period.

By the way, Favre actually has a winning record in the playoffs. Very rare for a QB that has been there as many times as he has. but we’ve gone around that block before.

Favre as a Viking will sell more tickets at a higher price and that will make building a new stadium easier then if Favre wasn’t a Viking.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but they can’t simply raise the face value of tickets now. Any inflated ticket prices is going on the secondary market, not into the hands of the Vikings organization. And do you honestly think that one year with Favre at the helm will make an entire state of voters change their mind about public funding for a new dome? Well, if you do, you’re sorely mistaken. If the Vikings want a new stadium, Wilf and Co. are going to have to pony up far more then they are currently willing to. Now, maybe a Super Bowl win will get things moving in that department, but Favre’s presence alone will not.

and an option to come back a second year

You mean, “an option to be F’ed in the A for a second year”, right?

Chili and Bevell....

…will do whatever the hell Favre tells them to. They are his b!tches.

Chili is going to look out for his job first and foremost….if the fans and/or wilf are fed up with favre do you think Chili is really going to keep him around because Favre wants him too?

I may be wrong

And as I said above I hope I am, I want to win and if brittfar gives us the best chance so be it. I am just not sure that is the case. A lot of talk about “the leadership this team needs” but is that the case? Is his heart in it? If they hit a rough patch in the middle of the season does Favre step up and take charge or does he throw it in? Can the coach rally the team when he has no credibility?

I agree, they’re pros and if Favre is healthy and can win and takes ’em to the big one I will be the first to admit I was wrong, I just think there is serious backlash potential here that many are overlooking.

The Bottom Line...

NFL players want to win games and Chilly wants to keep his job. Do you want Sage or T.Jack leading a 2 min. drive in the playoffs?

Honestly negative Vikings fans need to get over themselves. Favre (the old Int hall of famer) will scare more teams (freeing up the box for AP) and be better than Sage and T. Jack. Do you think the Bears, Packers, and Lions are happy about us signing Favre? Hell no they’re scared, so realize this is good for the team and I’m a Vikings fan who supports the team you should be too.

Good point about getting players out of the box for AD

So I’m less of a fan than you because I don’t blindly and stupidly support every move? There’s a word for that it’s called being a sheep.

I think he's saying some (including you?) care less about winning than the rest of us

I see all this posting today, rehash of what was said months ago, “oh it will be awful, even if we win the Packer fans will say that we needed their retreads, oh no AP will not get all the glory they deserve” etc etc etc

There are people who care more HOW we win, than IF we WIN. I care IF we win. IF we win, I can deal with any HOW. But others here … not so much. They putting their own desires for the how ahead of the final record. I’m not saying that that makes them any more or less a fan. I’m just saying that there are others like me that don’t get our undies all wrapped up in a bundle about that, I mean, it’s not like Favre is even a bad guy, he isn’t shooting people, or runnign dog fight rings. His “crimes” are jsut that he’s old, and is an emotional flake that can’t make up his mind. I can deal with that. We’ve jhad worse. I mean … think about it, even Jim McMahon played here!

I’d argue that this is a playoff team without Favre, wouldn’t you?

So if we both agree on this then how does this move get measured? By him taking us to the Super Bowl.

That’s entirely unlikely. Especially if he doesn’t hold up.

I'm with you

in the “Crappy Fan” Club, Schaefer.

Some people live by this mantra:
“It’s not whether you win or lose, its how you play the game.”

Some people live by this mantra:
“Just win baby.”

The difference is, the people who believe the first have open hearts for the people who believe the second. The people who believe the second, think the people who believe the first are stupid.

Maybe those of us you put in the second group

have no problem with how Brett Favre has “played the game” In fact we admire how he’s done it. So we are part of both camps at once.

Seriously, dude, you would dislike Favre less as a player if wasn’t as consistent at delivering for his other teams — including the Packers?

Really?

by puddnhead on Aug 18, 2009 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not satisfied with just getting to the playoffs

But on the other hand, I’m not expecting/demanding that he “guarantee” a superbowl the day he arrives to camp. Insisting on that would be a little … stupid and naive, don’t you think? “Any given Sunday.” You’re askign Favre to be a lock on delivering something (a usperbowl ring) that he individually can’t deliver. that is just dumb.

He increases our odds to get there IMO. that’s all we can ask for.

Well, I don’t know about scaring defenses. What will probably happen though is that the box will clear up regardless, because they’ll be waiting for Favre to throw an interception. So it’s a win-win (win) for Peterson.

You’re completely right, i can’t wait to watch All Day! If Favre sucks we put in our excellent backup Sage. Or Favre plays something like he did with the Jets before his injury. I just can’t stand all the negativity of Vikings fans who hate Favre, please don’t watch the games, go support the Packers to beat Favre. This is an easy smart business move/risk for the Wilfs, if Favre flops, Sage gets the start. It’s so simple.

Can we finally agree with what I have been saying all along

The three ultimate truths of the whole Farve Senario are:

1) the NFL is all about wins now!!!!!
2) Chilly believes he will win more with Farve!!!
3) More wins with Farve may or may not be the case, but what you think does not matter.

I for one am excited that we will get to see who was right between the pro Farve and the anti Farve camps.

I say it again. We are not worthy to be fans of this league!!!! The NFL Rules!!!!

I’m just glad this team is being led by the great man known as Brad Childress. His wisdom, creativity, communication skills, and overall dynamic “ness” will ensure that we continue to be a great football team despite our lack of talented players.

This franchise keeps bringing in scrubs and Coach Childress keeps finding a way to lead the team to greatness. He’s an indescribable man really. Sometimes you just know “it” when you see “it.”

Have my babies Brad Childress!

Just my Opinion

I have been a Vikes fan since I was 9 years old and did not want to be a cheesehead like my folks.
I think like Farve or hate him he will be a driving force this team that is strongly in need of leadership in the Offense really needs.
I would love to see him take us all the way to the Superbowl.
Do I think this will happen?? Sadly no I think he will fade mid-season. But fade or not I think he is what our scattered offense needs to get in a winning mind set for the coming season.
