Open Thread: Vikings Introduce Favre
At about 5:00p CT, the Minnesota Vikings will introduce the newest member of the roster: Brett Favre. I've tried to find a player for the press conference that can be embedded here but haven't had any luck. So, if you're planning to watch it online, you'll be able to view it at this page on Vikings.com.
This is a big moment for the Vikings and Favre. And this is your open thread.
Update: In case you missed it...

I loves me some Purple Judas!!
Welcome to the team, would you like that 20 pieces of Silver broken into 16 game checks as usual??
That is stupid
How can you compare Farve to something that happen to god. Don not ever disgrace god like that. Have some respect. Farve is a football player and nothing more.
God and Jesus
are two different people. In fact, one isn’t a “person” at all. More of an “entity”. That is, if you believe all that stuff.
We call All Day “Purple Jesus” and I think these are hilarious, so big whoop.

C'mon everybody
You’ll find this season much more enjoyable if you just drink the Favre Kool-Aid. It tastes great!! Let’s go VIKES! SKOL

+1
Draft Tebow next year and we are set for awhile.
Now we have a real shot this year.
Bernard, Percy and AP oh my!
It IS possible.
Unless he starts throwing more and works on his mechanics he might end up being picked late first round.

wow a 2 year $25 Million Deal for Favre according to ESPN
Well..we know the Vikings are going to Draft a QB in the first round and Groom him behind Favre next year
Sam Bradford!
Not saying I agree with you, but that would be sweet!
So Favre for two years?
That would be nice to see
Incredibly enough, we will somehow find more ways to say
…the same things we’ve already said about Favre in this post and others on this topic.
I had thought it may have been partially about money before, and this news says he came back and accepted more $. I just hope that he was never feeling as awful as he said he felt a matter of weeks ago.
Now it’s definitely a make-or-break year for Childress and Bevell.
He has to play a game
Hopefully he goes down in the preseason to save the money

wait, a couple months ago, vikings fans on this blog seemed upset at the notion of having favre in a vikings uniform. now, you seem ecstatic. i think favre is a “diva.” skipping camp isn’t fair to jackson or any other vikings player. i don’t believe in special treatment. at first i was interested to see the vikings because of percy harvin, but i think that queer, favre, just nullified that feeling. he should retire and move to mexico.
When its your 19th season
In an offence he pretty much ran his whole career, Favre missing training camp isn’t a big deal. The backups are the ones who need the reps anyway.
Bernard, Percy and AP oh my!
if you knew anything Chaucer
its that a couple months ago, a lot of people liked the idea, a lot of people didn’t.
And now, a lot of people like the news, a lot of people don’t.
Now THIS, boys and girls, is a good example of a “troll”.

Anyone watching ESPN, and Mark Schlereth???
Schlereth is not warm to the idea of the vikes and Favre. To put it lightly. He said “the vikings with Favre ARE NOT the best team in the NFC” What a TOOL.

at least the rotator cuff injury was approved by the doc, not just by Brett
And it does sound like he had legitimate reason to hesitate, not deliberately jerking them around.

Chilly called Favre yesterday
after not talking to him in 3weeks.
CHilly: you wanna take another shot at this?
wow
a star tribune article said that the TJ & Rosenfels injuries helped prompt him to "re-recruit"
…and also referred to a less-than-steller practice last week that was on Childress’s mind
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.
here it is
Here it is.
Check on the second page to find the description.
A source also said the Vikings began actively re-recruiting Favre last Wednesday after quarterbacks Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels had a particularly rough practice. The Vikings also had concerns about Jackson after he suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee on the second day of practice. He missed three days after the injury and has not looked as sharp since returning.

So Far....
Favre has said probably four times that Childress called him and asked Favre to re-consider his retirement, and that there had been no contact in the previous three weeks.
Favre claims he re-re-re-re-retired three weeks ago because of health concerns, not to miss training camp.
Also, Favre claims he un-un-un-un-un-retired this time for his ten-year old daughter, and not out of any need for revenge.
This guy may play the dumb hillbilly, but he sure knows how to place himself in the best possible light.
Acc. to Favre, he had only pure motives for not signing three weeks ago (health), and came out because he loves football, and his ten-year old daughter.
Also, the Vikings asked him to play—Favre suggests he was quite happy to stay retired, had Childress not called him today.
Alright, he is my team’s QB now—I’ll try to lay off the Hater-Ade.

Woops...Thought that was Schlerth haha
either or that was such a moronic statement.
My brief take on this minor roster move...
I’ll have a full post up soon at VikingVigil.com, but here is a quick thought:
Would you’d rather have another season with a backup manning the most important position on the field? Favre isn’t a top-15 quarterback, but he’s better than what we’ve got. Is he worth $12 million? Absolutely not, but the publicity more than makes up for that. It’s a solid move and the Vikings are now one of the top two teams in the NFC.

I had to read that sentence a few times
Yeah, I’d take a backup Manning. Peyton or Eli, either one. heh.
I would be shocked If T-Jack isn't Traded or Released
If Released…expect the Packers to scoop him up
He won't be released for that very reason.
Traded, if anything.

Do you think
Anyone on the team is going to say it sucks out right, hell no they want to try to make it work no matter how they really feel.
by bleedingpurplesince74 on Aug 18, 2009 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions
Wow you have really gone full tilt into your own world now haven't you
Now we can’t even believe what any of the players say any more? No matter what anyone says to the contrary, you will know how they REALLY feel, but can’t say.
Here comes the hate mail........
2 years? I’ll be suprised he makes it. $25 mil? Not worth it. Arm surgery? Is he really 100% or just gunning for the Pack? 39 soon to be 40? A number that will haunt us. Garuanteed Superbowl victiry? Dont count on it and dont hold your breath we even get close.
So yes, from the get go, I’ve been against this, and nothing has changed! I just dont see it with a guy this old and being banged up the year before. Yes, he did post SOME impressive numbers, but by the end of the season last year, othing that blew up my skirt. And I do realize he was on the Jets, but a team that is not total suck arse either. Is my aversion to this just because he was a Packer? No at all. I was happy when we got Longwell and Sharper…….
In their primes.
That will always be my gripe about this. We now have someone who is at the end of his career, not in the middle, getting towards the middle or still on the tail end of his peak and able to give us 5 years. 2 years? Sorry, that is pushing it. He was great……once. His ability to try to force the ball in the end of the big game, trying to make the big play so he can be hero (2007 NFC Championship anyone?) is something that was becoming common place towards the end of his time in Green Bay. I wont mention the fact that he is the NFL alltime leader in INT’s. Some have already said that Fran can eat his heart out……how? It’s only preseason and yet Favre is already going to get us 2 Superbowls in a row, without taking a snap? Yet last year a ton of people were ready to believe that T.J. was ready to go and lead this team. This signals the end of that expirement, yet, I think opens the door to another, highly possible, more disasterous experiment. For what ever reason, people think we must win now or slowely die. How? Peterson is only going into his 3rd year, our WR’s corp is one of the youngest out there that I know of, the D looks solid and is locked up for awhile and other then a few ne faces, the O looks like it will be around for awhile. Why are we hitting the panick button?
My honest thought of this whole situation will be put down by some as me being a none team player, being negative and other shoutdowns. So be it. I am not going to just sit on my butt and not say that this is a mistake when that is my feeling no matter what most or half may say nor think. And if that makes me some antiViking, then too bad. Get over it. I still am coming the 5th, still cheering my home team, still hope they win, but wishing we did not have the person we are now stuck with running the passing game.
With all that said, my prediction is two fold:
If things go the best they can. Division Champs with a trip to the Divisional round but thats it. Not even an NFC Championship game.
Worst case, with Favre going the whole season, wild card with a loss in the first round.
Im sorry, some are going to get mad, but I dont care. Why is Favre the sudden answer to all our QB problems? Why are some who so openly blasted ideas by others or myself with QB’s who were younger so willig to go with someone who was good?
Bring on the bashing.
"If you're gonna shoot, shoot, don't talk"
Well… I like it! I think he brings something ‘untangible’ to the game…
Statistics tell one side of the story, but they will never capture Brett’s passion for the game…
And… Passion is something this team has been missing for some time…
And… Passion is what we’ve seen on this blog and others since the idea of bringing Brett in came up.

He has become the answer
because it was pretty clear to our coaches that no one else was.
I’m sorry, TJack and Sage ain’t no Don Majikowski, who lost their positions to Favre by cruel twists of Fate. TJack controlled his own destiny, and fumbled it. If he played better, no one here is talking aobut Favre (or even Sage). And Sage, he has had how many years to prove his case for being a franchise QB? How many TDs vs. INTs did he get last year when he had his moment, on a team that may have the best receiver in the league (Andre Johnson)? Matt Schaub seemed to be able to figure out how to make that work for himself …
To the question
What does it take to ruin a good team and get a head coach finally fired
by bleedingpurplesince74 on Aug 19, 2009 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions
Chilly never should have let Favre tell his tale first...
… because it got painted as a case of 3 weeks of an “Aw, shucks” QB who was happily retired, and playing with kids getting a phone call out of the blue by a coach who went back on his words from the start of training camp— and once again told his QBs they were crap by making a desperate plea on the phone for “Aw, shucks” to come in and take everything over, even though training camp had already started. And while “Aw, shucks” is going to try his best, he can’t really promise anything because he is still a little bit banged up—- and wouldn’t even have come back if the coach hadn’t called him….. out of the blue. Even missing training camp wasn’t his idea— he was happily retired, after all.
Wow. Anyone who thinks this guy isn’t a sharp politician is kidding themselves.
Now we know what Chilly and Favre were talking about in the ride over from the airport:
Favre: “I’ll come in and try to pull your blundering ass out of the fire. But you will have to take full responsibility and play the stooge if this doesn’t work, or I get tired of it.”
Chilly: “Yes sir, Mr. Favre.”
I am hoping this all works out with a SB Ring at the end of the season, of course… and I will be rooting for Favre to have his best games ever in Lambeau Field (…. and not even in a Packers uniform, no less! Ha!) but….. wow.
Chilly may be even worse at politics than he is at coaching.
by Sonic on Aug 18, 2009 7:52 PM CDT reply actions
Maybe to be a good coach, you take some heat so one of your star players doesn't go all Jay Cutler on you?
Just a thought. Maybe Chilly isn’t a great coach, but at lest it sounds like he’s better at it than you would be.
So Favre's psyche is as fragile as Jay Cutler's??
And we have to let him tell obviously made up stories to keep his ego stroked?
And you judge that to be “good coaching”?
Yes, puddnhead, I would tell a 40 year-old to stand up like a man and at least give the appearance of being honest about why he is just now showing up in Minnesota. It is called telling the truth. It is also called being a team leader. We need one of those, you know. Not a diva.
Right now, Favre is just the latter to me at this stage. Hopefully, he will become the former.
by Sonic on Aug 18, 2009 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions
So it would make him look like a great coach
To stand there and listen to Favre tell everyone, “yeah, the real story is i told coach, this is the way it’s gonna be, take it or leave it.” Then get up there yourself and admit that you are aware of it, but are still willing to put up with it.
Seriously? If that is true, do you REALLY think that puts him in a better position than he is by letting it play the way it did? Okie dokie!
Well, you are right...
… in that this is one instance where we should maybe cut Chilly some slack - I am certainly much more annoyed by Favre in all of this than Chilly (the latter’s jerking around of his other QBs in camp notwithstanding.) Still, Chilly did as much or more than anyone else to create the QB disaster that has us in this situation in the first place— so it is hard for me to have a tremendous amount of empathy for him.
When we are all celebrating a deep run in the playoffs 5 months from now, none of this may matter. But considering how many “friends” Favre has on the coaching staff, he sure had a funny way of showing his friends how much he respects them, by skipping training camp and all. Favre hung his “friends” out to dry— and all because he can’t bring himself to put up with training camp. That just flat-out shows a lack of leadership, and willingness to sacrifice for his “friends” on the coaching staff, the teammates he will need to lead, and the organization that is going to be paying him a pretty hefty salary.
I guess all players ultimately care much more about themselves than their friends, teammates, and employers— that is fine. That is pretty much like the rest of us, too. Maybe I am just used to seeing players at least pretend to care about things beyond just themselves.

I hate that there are people...
that think that people are going to “not be real fans” and stop cheering for the Vikings now because of Favre.
Are you kidding me??
Nothing is ever going to stop us from cheering for the Vikes. Not even Brett. Let us get our hate for him out of our system so that, come week 1, we are primed and ready to go.
Just because people don’t like Favre DOES NOT mean they are going to stop loving the Vikes. And if you think that, then I’m sorry, but you are a complete moron.
