Arrowhead Pride Answers Your Questions on the Chiefs
Over at Arrowhead Pride, we're gearing up for this Friday's game between the Chiefs and Vikings and ready to answer any questions you might have about your next opponent.
Yes, there is still a game to be played after Brett Favre's first (and only?) series.
We were actually wondering if the NFL Network would contemplate covering the game live. Currently, it's scheduled for a replay at 10 PM CST on Friday night. No other live games are scheduled to be shown at the time of the Chiefs/Vikings game.
Quick background on the Chiefs offseason:
- Finished 2-14
- Fired Herm Edwards, hired Todd Haley
- Fired Carl Peterson, hired Scott Pioli
- Nearly a completely new coaching staff
- Traded for Matt Cassel
- Switched to the 3-4
And so much more that's interesting to the folks that follow the Chiefs on a daily basis (like you do the Vikings).
So, I'll send some Arrowhead Pride readers this way to help answer questions.
(Hint: Expect some questions on Jared Allen. We still remember him.)
This FanPost was created by a registered user of The Daily Norseman, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of the site. However, since this is a community, that view is no less important.

Welcome!

Question
Who did you get for the boat load (see what I did there?) of draft picks my Vikes sent you guys for JA, do you think it was worth it, and who seems to stand out from that group?
by Jepp The Viking on Aug 19, 2009 1:12 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
We traded up in the first round (using one of our extra third round picks)
And got Brandon Albert. He’ll be our starting LT for some time so some definite value there.
Then with the other third round pick (Chiefs fans correct me if I’m wrong), we picked Jamaal Charles. He’ll be a good 2nd back for a while as well.
Considering we came away with Brandon Albert in the deal, I’d say it was fair to both sides.

Well done!
We’ve had a lot of O-line issues on the right side for the past couple years, so we can definitely appreciate shoring it up with someone can stand their ground for the next decade. We picked up Loadholt for that purpose on the right side and he has the starting position. He’s about the same size as Mt. McKinnie, and looks to be a very respectable road-grader for our running game, but word is that he needs to improve his pass protection. He has the widest ‘wingspan’ in the draft, maybe that will help.
Ah, ah,

From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.

Certainly worth it...
by the time KC is ready to really compete Allen will be on the decline. He was a great talent and a respected drinker but he would have gone to waste here.

In the end, yes
To begin with the reason he was traded was because our former GM (Carl Peterson) pissed him off and he said that he would leave as soon as he was a FA. So we COULD have kept him last year but then would have gotten nothing when he left. Believe me, he was missed sorely last year though.
Honestly, he wouldn’t have had enough impact last season to make a significant change in our record. Noone could, given the shitty coaching we had. So things would have turned out the same – our GM and HC get fired, Pioli and Haley come in and install the 3-4, which most likely would have made Allen fairly useless this year. So in the end, yes it worked out for us.

Matt Cassel
Do you expect him to succeed near the level of last year? Or do you feel that he will not perform without Bellicheck?
When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.
by Robert Rence on Aug 19, 2009 1:18 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That is a 60 million dollar question, and one that we all hope will pan out.
Of all the success factors that you normally hear mentioned alongside Cassel, Bellicheck isn’t normally one of them however, you know that he was instrumental in Matt’s success. In my opinion, I’m more concerned about not having all the targets that he had in NE like Moss, and Welker and others.
It is a great questions, and I really enjoyed your footer.
Good luck to all the Vikes this year.
PS I really miss Jared
by Spunky on Aug 19, 2009 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It remains to be seen. He hasn’t been doing so well in camp but there’s no way he’ll sit with his new big contract. Cassel had lots of toys last year that he won’t have this year (good line, Moss/Welker). It will certainly be quite the test to see if he pans out. There’s a bit of pessimism/depression about him in our local sports radio.
I’d say nowhere near the level of last year but certainly after a year or two a reliable franchise QB. We’ve tried to load up on WR’s in recent weeks (since the former Arizona OC loves them) and we’re working on the following which is not as good as the Pats last year but should be respectable:
Dwayne Bowe
Amani Toomer
Ashley Lelie
Bobby Engram
Mark Bradley
Devard Darling

We had some speculation about possibly trying to go for Cassel, but of course, it was just hot air. There’s some questions in Purple-Land about Childress and his efforts to obtain a truly good QB over the past couple years. The Jackson Project is not going well and Childress pretty much hitched his wagon to that young man. You guys snapped up Thigpen (don’t think we’ve forgotten! LOL!) and while he didn’t set the conference on fire, he looked fairly good out there too. Having a solid backup is no minor thing, I wish him the best!

He had a great year last year
So without the weapons I think we’re all aware his stats will go down. But, he’s only 27, and we want to build around him. So, while this year is important, we also want to ensure that he has the tools so that in year 3, 4 5, and 6 we’re contenders.
by Joel Thorman on Aug 19, 2009 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
An additional concern
Our offensive line has changed very little from last year. We brought in Mike Goff to replace Adrian Jones at RG. Now, after the first preseason game, it seems the coaching staff is realizing that Damion McIntosh (often dubbed “Sackintosh” by Arrowhead Pride members since early last season) isn’t going to meet their needs at RT. I don’t think we have a clear upgrade at the position available, either.
So keeping our new “franchise” QB safe is certainly still a concern.

Good Luck Vikings Fans
I’m a KC fan all my young life but my dad hails from St. Cloud Minnesota and loves his purple and gold (their my #2 team to follow). I think Brett Favre is the missing link for your Super Bowl, but Childress is a clown. I don’t know if that’s a controversial statement around these parts but if he can’t get it done with the team he has, he never will IMHO

I think the general consensus around here is that Chili is a good personnel guy but a crappy game manager and play caller. His play calling is too vanilla, he doesn’t use the talent of his players, and he doesn’t make half time corrections.

Are You Chief Fans Thinking You'll See A Return Of Larry Johnson Of Old?
BTW I grew up in River Falls, WI where the Chiefs currently hold their training camp (not for long) and I used to volunteer at the camp when I was a kid. I got to speak with players such as derrick thomas, steve bono and tony gonzalez. I also worked at a restaurant in high school and got to wait on Dick Vermeil. He was there with the winners of the punt, pass and kick tournament or whatever it’s called.

That is cool!
Nice story and small world (actually, not at all on the internet).
LJ, LJ, LJ…mixed reactions from most of us. I’d like to think he’s “back” but I don’t think we’re going to run an offense that can ever get him completely back. Best case scenario? LJ is good throughout the season and anything over 1,000 yards would be fine in my book.
by Joel Thorman on Aug 19, 2009 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Do you think they used LJ too much when he was new?
by Loki The Viking God on Aug 19, 2009 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
What's too much?
He helped us to the playoffs in 2006….he was a good player. But I just don’t think RBs in general should be kept around for too long….their lifespan is shorter than most players so I wouldn’t commit a ton of money to a player like him.
by Joel Thorman on Aug 19, 2009 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I was just thinking that considering he had 752 carries between 2005 and 2006 that that might have cut short his career. But yeah if he didn’t get that many carries then maybe you wouldn’t have reached the playoffs.
by Loki The Viking God on Aug 19, 2009 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think so
That seems to be a pretty common theme with Larry – that he was used up. I disagree. He hasn’t had nearly as many carries overall compared to other backs his age. He’s actually ridden the bench for a while during his career.
Larry’s problem is motivation. He gets pissy and doesn’t try when:
1. The O-line can’t block for him
2. He doesn’t get a ton of carries
3. The team is losing

I fully expect the LJ of old to return...
complete with chicks being tossed down stairs and spit on, dudes being threatened in d-bag KC bars, and LJ talking about how "hood’ he is.
Oh on the field, so far he’s our only legit offensive weapon. If he doesn’t play well be in a prime position to have Tebow as our HB next year.

LJ of old
We don’t have the offensive line to produce 1700+ yards of rushing this season. Branden Albert shows promise, but he still has a year or two to develop. LJ might hit 1000 yds rushing this year, but nothing close to what we saw in ’05 and ’06.

by Loki The Viking God on Aug 19, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not bad
Jamaal Charles has a lot of potential. He was an NCAA track star who made the decision in 2006 to shift his focus strictly to football. He came out of college a year early, so he’s still young and has some growing to do. Some think we’ll see him as our starting back in the not-too-distant future.

How's the switch to 3-4 going? Do you think it'll be effective?
by Loki The Viking God on Aug 19, 2009 2:34 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
It’s coming along. Most people are still concerned with Dorsey and Hali making the transition. If Zach Thomas can stay healthy we will have the leader on the field Herm’s teams never had. Reports from camp are that he has been a great teacher so far.
As for it being effective, it can’t get much worse than last year and any change is welcome, at least in my book.
by JComp11 on Aug 19, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well I hope the transition to 3-4 works out good for you and not so good for the Pack haha
by Loki The Viking God on Aug 19, 2009 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
To answer a little more
Dorsey did fairly well in the 1st preseason game. He got some penetration which was good to see since we had zero penetration last season. Hali also looked good. I remember seeing Hali blitzing but he overpursued the RB (he did this COUNTLESS times last year) and I was thinking “Oh no, not again”. But then he made a heads up play, read the play action and put some pressure on schuab. Schuab completed the pass still, but it was the heads up play on reading the play action that impressed me. He struggled with that alot last season.
I think both players will do okay in the 3-4 but it definately remains to be seen.
The benefit we’ll have from the 3-4 its we’ll have many blitz packages from all different directions. Last year, we hardly blitzed at all. If Herm wouldnt of been the coach. Gunther would have had more blitzing and we MIGHT not have set the record for lowest sacks in a season
by Petey14 on Aug 19, 2009 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Another tough question
Basically…we don’t know. They looked good on the first series last week, but then gave up a 94 yard TD drive.
It’s one of those things where it’s going to be a transition all year (and probably for a couple of years). I like a few of the pieces we have right now but there are still plenty of positions that will be eventually overhauled.
by Joel Thorman on Aug 19, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not too bad IMO
The defensive line seems to be doing OK. We picked up a pair of DE’s high in the draft so we’ll have to see if they can contribute during their R year and if Dorsey can be effective as a 3-4 DE rather than a 4-3 DT.
As far as linebackers go here are the issues:
1. Can Vrabel and Thomas stay healthy? There’s not much quality depth behind them (except possibly the kid we had playing ILB for Thomas durning the first game).
2. Derrick Johnson (our 1st round LB pick from 05) seems to be doing nicely in the new scheme. Can he finally live up to first round potential?
3. Tamba Hali (our 1st round DE pick from 06). Can he convert to a pass rushing LB? Not bad from what we’ve heard, but still a big question mark.
The secondary – no problems there. Probably the most stable and talented part of the team.
by TheScootness on Aug 19, 2009 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah hopefully those first round defensive picks can show their potential and prove they were worth the investment
by Loki The Viking God on Aug 19, 2009 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
We’ve gone D with our first round pick 4 out of the last 5 years and there are also some 2’s and 3’s starting out there. Time for them to live up to the hype.

Question for Vikings Fans
How does it feel to have ol’ #4 after all these years? Does it feel like revenge or is it a little weird?
To us, this would be the equivalent of getting John Elway toward the end of his career. I’m really not sure what the reaction would have been because we all hated (yet maybe deep down respected) him for so long.
by TheScootness on Aug 19, 2009 2:51 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
It kinda seems like older fans dislike it and younger fans like it for the most part. I’m a younger fan (22) and despised Favre when he was a Packer but always respected him as a person and player. I like the move overall as I think Favre offers more at the position than either Tjack or Sage. I see this as a high risk high reward sort of deal. If he can stay healthy I think he’ll lead us to a deep playoff run. If he gets injured hopefully we’ll have Sage as a backup and he can come in. I think under sage we would still reach the playoffs but would probably lose the first game just like last year under TJack.
If nothing else Favre will, and already has, help sell tickets and merchandise. Also he should be able to remove some heat from AD and possibly get a player out of the box for him.

Elway. But like you said, I respect him. I remember when Denver cheated in that playoff game when they greased up their Jerseys. They found out 10 mins into the first quarter and didnt do shit about it.
I remember Elway not having a clue about it. Though, he might have had a clue. We’ll never know. I just remember Shannon Sharpes comments after one of our games with Denver.

As an OLD Vikings fan… It’s great to have a QB on the team that brings us some experience and PASSION.
It’s not ‘weird’ for me… watched the Vikes get picked apart too many times by this man.
I want my Vikings to put the best team on the field and I think this move does just that.
Yeah… he’s ‘old’… and I worry he can stay healthy. BUT… he knows how to win.
We were going nowhere with TJ or Sage. Brett is an upgrade. Maybe a fragile upgrade, but an upgrade.

Weakness-That’s tougher. I’d go with the OLine still. The potential to be decent is there, so we’ll see.
by JComp11 on Aug 19, 2009 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why do you think the secondary is a strength? Looking at the roster I don’t see any Pro Bowlers back there and the Chiefs were in the middle of the road in pass defense rankings (16th). Not trying to be confrontational, just curious as I don’t follow the Chiefs. I would like your LBs would be a strength will Derrick Johnson, Mike Vrabel, and Zach Thomas.
by vikingfuture8816 on Aug 19, 2009 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because
Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr (the starting CB’s) were both rookies and played extremely well considering we had NO pass rush at all. Jarrad Page managed 4 INT’s without help from QB pressure. Bernard Pollard is a typical hard hitting Strong Safety and he was miscast in the Cover 2.
Think about it. We had 10 sacks last year. We had minimal pressure on QB’s and they could have sat in the pocket and picked us apart last year. But our Secondary did an excellent job in coverage and kept us from being last in Pass Defense. If we can put some pressure on the QB, our secondary should excel. Plus, our Safety tandem is heading into their 4th season and our CB’s heading into the 2nd season. We have some depth at CB with Leggett who surprised last year, and added Mike Brown for added depth and mentor ability to the Safeties. Theyre a young core group who’s going to get to play together for many years. We expect BIG things from them.
Our LB’s cant be considered a strength yet because last year, they were a huge weakness. DJ should excell in the 3-4 and Vrabel has something left. Thomas is on the downside of his career and has missed camp time with nagging injuries. Corey Mays has stepped up and may be a great addition. Hali has the jury out on him to since hes making the switch from DE to OLB.
I understand your reasoning behind questioning the Secondary. Keep in mind, we were 2-14 last season. The only Pro Bowlers we had were Waters and Gonzo.

Question for all you Vikes fans...
What do you think you will learn about your team on Friday besides the play of Favre?
by tomahawk44 on Aug 19, 2009 11:11 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Competitions continue
Most likely, one of those two will be leaving Vikingland soon. We may find out on Friday. Personally, I’d like to see if T-Jack’s poor performance last week was a fluke, or what we can expect out of him. He was injured last week so he has that excuse to fall back on.
I also want to see our secondary and LB corps start to jell a bit. We have a lot of young guys in the secondary especially and they need all the play-time they can get.
Last week the Special Teams looked outstanding, very different from last year. I want to see if that continues, or did they just get lucky against the Colts?
Finally…. we have too many WRs and too many RBs on the team… some of them have to go, and the heck of it is, this year we have a mighty fine crop of youngsters to consider. Hate to let any of them go, but the competition is going to be fierce over the next couple weekends. Keep an eyeball on Albert Young, Ian Johnson, and Antone Smith, I’m thinking that one of those three isn’t going to see the regular season in Purple. I hope there’s a way to keep those three, but the cutoff is merciless.

But if all we had to go by is what we’ve seen so far, and a decision had to be made right now, today…
I’d cut Tarvaris Jackson.
I hate to say that, but he’s been given every opportunity to excel, and the only thing he’s done consistently, is blown it. Booty hasn’t proven anything, but he hasn’t been expected to do anything yet. He has nothing but upside, an unknown that might work out in a year or two.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
