Not So Fast Viking Fans

All right Viking fans before you get too excited, about the signing of Brett Favre, there are a few people you may want to talk to. You may want to talk to some Jet fans who last year at this time were thinking that the same Brett Favre was going to get their team back into the playoffs. Instead they got a quarterback who led the NFL with 22 interceptions and another disappointing season. You may want to talk to Eric Mangini, the former coach of the Jets, who some believe lost his job primarily because of Favre's poor play. You may want to talk to some of Favre's Jet teammates who after the season described Farve as distant and said that there was a lot of resentment in the locker room about him.

Favre was a great quarterback, but his skills are diminished and he doesn't want to adjust his play accordingly. The Jets tried in vain to get him to play more conservatively and not force so many throws. But even as the Jets were fighting for a playoff spot Favre was throwing nine interceptions, with only two touchdowns, in the last five games.

I know Viking fans are thinking Favre's poor performance was because he had a shoulder injury and that was fixed with surgery this summer. The shoulder may have been repaired, (although he still does have a tear in his rotator cuff), but has it been rehabbed long enough. Just ask John Smoltz how hard it is for an aging athlete to come back from shoulder surgery. He rehabbed for a year and his shoulder still isn't right. Favre has only rehabbed for a few months. That shoulder may not hold up for a 16 game season.

Brett Favre is an aging quarterback, with diminishing skills and a bad shoulder. If I were a Viking fan I would hold off on buying those Super Bowl tickets.

You mean BICEP injury, right?

or are you talking about another Brett Favre?

I believe the 'push off' cost us 'our' SuperBowl...
I believe you 'go for the win'... instead of 'taking a knee'...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Aug 19, 2009 7:03 PM CDT reply actions

You mean the guy who was number 2 in MVP voting last year???

Is that the guy you’re talking about?? With the fixed arm and the offense that he steps right into? The guy who has been in the uniform for less than 36 hours and has already taken over That Guy???

by ctowner35 on Aug 19, 2009 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions

uh... tied for second in MVP voting was CHAD PENNINGTON

I’m a Packer fan and a Favre fan but c’mon, lets not be stupid in our attempts to defend him!

perhaps he meant 2007. Favre did come in 2nd that year…

Brady = 49 votes
Favre = 1 vote

We’ll see how he does no one knows Vikings aren’t asking him to throw 350 yards 3 td’s every game either we’ll see

by Zoxide on Aug 19, 2009 7:19 PM CDT reply actions

haha so what?

If he gets hit and lands on his shoulder the wrong way his rotator cuff could completely tear. That could happen anytime he drops back to pass, and trust me people are going to want to hit him, and hit him hard. Am I saying that’s what’s going to happen? No, who knows whether it will happen or not. Is there a chance his bicep starts bugging him again or his rotator cuff starts bugging him? Yes, there is.

by packallday555 on Aug 19, 2009 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions

And

That’s probably why he can’t finish a season strong. Lsat 5 weeks and into the playoffs, watch the velocity drop off significantly. It’s been doing that for 5 years running now.

Are the Vikings better with Favre? Yes

How many games has Favre missed because of injury? Zero
Are Packers fans scared of a talented Vikings team Quarterbacked by their own Hall of Famer? Apparently So.

Jared Allen said “the dude’s throwing missiles” = the Packers are shakin’ in their boots! How will they stop A.P. now?

by solafide on Aug 19, 2009 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions

The Packers were the favorite to win the division until Favre signed with the Vikings. I still think Aaron Rodgers is the Better QB because of Favre’s surgically repaired throwing arm and his advanced age.

by multi-lakes on Aug 19, 2009 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Better QB? Maybe…. if you are just comparing yardage statistics etc then maybe yes. Winning is the biggest measurement of a good QB. Favre lead that same Packer team to a 13-3 record. Rodgers took over and they went below .500. To me, that is the biggest difference.

by PurpleJesus on Aug 19, 2009 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Rogers choked away close games, their kicker hooked and sliced game winners, and the defense fell apart. The Pack might have more luck this season and not have those problems this year. Then again the Vikings may just play some Dominating football and they still won’t win the division. We shall see.

by solafide on Aug 19, 2009 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Is this a joke?

The only “favorites” to win the division this year have been the Vikings and Bears.

You took my post in the wrong way

“How many games has Favre missed because of injury? Zero”

But he has lost games because he tried to play through injuries.

I’m not “scared” one bit. We have a young talented team. Our defense has been looking excellent so far (granted it’s only preseason), and the offense is looking to do big things this year. With or without Favre we can compete with you guys. Obviously I like our chances without Favre better, but that isn’t the case.

by packallday555 on Aug 20, 2009 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions

You are 100% right

The NFC North will be a more classy division this year. It’s gonna be Black and Blue no doubt.

by solafide on Aug 20, 2009 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Pack...

It is clear after today the Viking players themselves are psyched for what this season brings. Is Favre the player he once was? No, that is clear. Is he a vast improvement over what we had previously? Someone who can properly lead a team that has the best rushing attack in the NFL? Yes.

You also don’t seem to know enough about rotator cuff injuries. Dr Andrews clearly told Favre that it appeared his injury was small and was there for a while. Obviously it is no serious injury because as an ex pitcher who has a rotator cuff injury I can tell you clearly that if he can throw as hard as he did today in practice, and keep smiling, there is no issue there at all.

My concern is can he play 16 or more games. I hope Chilly has the common sense to pull him from games we are leading comfortably and even considers sitting him in others (maybe Lions, etc.). Maybe this way we can keep him healthy for 17, 18 or more games.

On the possible sack issue, good QBs get sacked less. Not because their lines are better but mostly because they sense the pressure. Favre got sacked only 31 times last year I believe it was. And the Vikings, who have one of the best backside offensive lines in football, gave up 47 or so because they had QBs who couldn’t read and react as well as Favre. This tells me we can expect a sack number in the low 30’s or less.

I am truly excited about the Vikes upcoming season. I won’t predict anything except I will truly enjoy this year more than any since 1998.

by PurpleJesus on Aug 19, 2009 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions

This is the most hyped season since 1998. No doubt people are starting buy into the Vikings as being legit contenders. Could this be the sports story of the year?

by solafide on Aug 19, 2009 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions

+1

I suffered a rotator cuff injury pitching a one hitter in high school and by god did it hurt. It hurt REALLY BAD, for a long time. I had to give up baseball and just go back to averaging a 215 in bowling instead. Except I didnt go back to that. I returned to bowling that fall and my average fell to a 175. It took me 3 years to rehab my shoulder back up…..and that was going from throwing overhand for baseball and underhand for bowling. (obviously)

Logically, there is a huge difference between overhand baseball at 60+ mph and a 16 pound ball at 15-20 mp. The reality though was that the result was the same. I lost velocity and control and it took years of strength training to get it back.

My primary point though, is that the effect was immediate. The tear caused significant change right away. If Brett has a tear, and he’s been able to toss the ball hard with accuracy then I find it hard to believe the tear is having any impact.

To me the only real concern would be the tear getting worse. What I did learn though from my doctor was that rotator cuff tears do heal. If there was calcification around the tear site then chances are there was at least enough natural healing for it to not be an issue. If there is no pain, no loss in velocity or control then he’s probably a-ok.

by Hoss-Drone on Aug 19, 2009 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I hope it stays calcified, Shank and Rice certainly can tell anyone his passes are still zippy

by solafide on Aug 19, 2009 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

The point is that Brett didn’t even know he had the tear. The pain he has had was always in the bicep and that isn’t the pain you experience from a rotator cuff.

As was pointed out, anything can happen good or bad to any QB on any play. I just like our odds to win better with Favre than without. The man stepped right into the huddle, without a meeting with the team, and called the full set of plays assigned…. I magine when he steps up to the line in a real game, looks over the defense, gives that smirk/smile, calls an audible and throws a 90 yd TD to Berrian! That hasn’t happened in Minny in a while….

by PurpleJesus on Aug 20, 2009 5:58 AM CDT up reply actions

“This tells me we can expect a sack number in the low 30’s or less.”

Even if it’s only 30 times, that’s still 30 times he could possibly land wrong on his shoulder. I actually know a fair amount about rotator, as I played QB throughout HS and had a partially torn rotator cuff. My therapist told me many times that landing on it the wrong could do further damage.

You guys have a lot too be excited about this year. I can’t wait for everything to get under way!

by packallday555 on Aug 20, 2009 12:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Murphy's Law

We all saw Tom Brady go down 1st game last year. Anything bad can happen, but so can the good. Farve could go down early and so could Rogers.

by solafide on Aug 20, 2009 12:34 AM CDT up reply actions

So what...

Maybe there is a few people that would like to hit the Packer QB hard as well…and maybe he ends up hurt and out for the season. Just saying…it could happen…right?

by Norse Force on Aug 19, 2009 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

anything can happen, let’s hope the Vikes have good Karma

by solafide on Aug 19, 2009 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

But Rodgers hasn’t just had major surgery, or a rotator cuff injury. So I would say his chances of getting hurt are less then Favre’s but who knows.

by packallday555 on Aug 20, 2009 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions

We are talking about a guy who hasn’t missed a game in like a million Sundays right?

by PurpleJesus on Aug 20, 2009 5:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Haha

But he now has inury history after this past year. It’s really not about whether or not he misses a game it’s about whether or not he gets hurt. If he gets hurt he won’t bench himself, and Chilly doesn’t have the balls to do it. If his level of play drops like it did last year then he probably won’t be much better then Sage or Jackson.

Of course this is all heresay and now that I think about it kind of pointless!

by packallday555 on Aug 21, 2009 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree in principle...

But it IS the NFL. Some guys go 10 years with no injuries and then get a career ender. Some guys get little, minor injuries their whole career but only miss a few games. It’s so effing random that it’s maddening.

Like Tarkenton

That was his personal ‘heads-up’ that it was time to hang up the cleats; he went 17 years without an injury worth mentioning. In his last year, he got hurt badly and realized that the bod wasn’t as resilient as it used to be, time to let the younger folks toss the pigskin.

What’s really maddening, Manimal, is having to accept that you aren’t 20 any more… that you’re no longer ‘invincible’, that if you fall the wrong way you really might not be able to get back up again. Or at the least, it’s going to hurt even worse the next day. That really sucks.

I know it sucks to have your career QB hop to your biggest rival, but finding it funny that he could suffer a really bad injury seems a bit… much.

Not how I meant it

I found it funny that he seemed to think they only way Favre would injure his arm is by throwing the ball too much. Because he is 40, and his body has already started to go on him. I don’t think it would be funny, and I’m not saying that’s what I want to happen. I was just pointing out that, him throwing the ball too much isn’t the only way he will get hurt this year.

by packallday555 on Aug 21, 2009 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

You are stupid.

Are you kidding me? We already made the playoffs without Favre. Is that all you think we are hoping for? We were good without him, so we’ll be better with him.

"He didn’t call me or anything. It was an accident, but a lot of people would have called to see how someone is doing after they got hit in the head. Especially if they had to go on the DL." — Morneau on pitcher Ron Villone after an April 2005 beaning.

The reason Mangini lost his Job was Because

The Matter of the fact that He forced Brett to Continue throwing 30-40 times a game When he knew his Bicep was injured…Mangini Cost himself his job..Not Brett Favre….and Mangini’s Play Calling Skills cost himself his job…he’s showing that in Cleveland so far.

by TonyO on Aug 19, 2009 9:17 PM CDT reply actions

It could be that the Jets realized the Mangini is just a bad coach who couldnt match up against their division rivals.

by Hoss-Drone on Aug 19, 2009 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Haha what?

“The Matter of the fact that He forced Brett to Continue throwing 30-40 times a game When he knew his Bicep was injured…”

Forced being the key word I want to point out here. Is Favre not an adult who decides what he can and cannot do? No one forced Favre to do anything. I guess I don’t know but I would be willing to bet that Mangini asked Favre if he was ok to play, and seeing as how Favre kept playing I’m sure he answered yes.

by packallday555 on Aug 20, 2009 12:37 AM CDT up reply actions

well...

mangini has proven over and over again that he isn’t a very good coach. Sure Favre is a grown man but he’s a warrior with a lot of pride. Mangini as the head coach should have the sense to see with his own eyes that favre was ineffective and should have sat him a few games. as the leader of a team he did not manage anything very well and that’s why he was fired. Management still wanted favre, they left him an open invitation that he decided to decline. mangini was straight up fired. Sometimes you have to read between the lines and this one blatantly reads that the front office was watching Mang-idiot for awhile and had enough of his many short comings as a head coach. Being a ’"protege" only gets you so far.

by c.schuenke on Aug 20, 2009 2:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Get what your saying

But the bottom line no one “forced” Favre to do anything. It just seems that now that he is a Viking, Vikings fans will say anything to make up force Favre’s weak points he’s had.

I think your forgetting one thing

Favre wants to play here. You think he wanted play for the Jets. Come on he didn’t want to be there, so i can’t blame him if he wasn’t the best guy in the locker room. But trust me he no only wants to be here, he wants to win here.

The bottom line is that Favre is a hige upgrade. Obviously these fans of other teams haven’t seen the Vikings QB play for the past several years.

Bring on Farve

I have been a die hard Vikes fan for over 30 years!! I have been saying to anyone who will listen in recent years that all we need now is a strong leader on the Offense. I think Farve will be a good fit for that roll. SO even if he can’t go the distance he is still a huge improvement over who has been QB recently!!!!!!!!
