Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

It's smart to wait...

So, I've heard a couple of analysts say that we shouldn't expect to have any word out of MN anytime soon about who they will try to trade from among, Sage, TJ, and JDB.  I read something here yesterday that made sense, saying that we would try to move quick while the hype was hot, also that we'd want to avoid injuring our trade candidate before sending him off.  But, the post never considered, what if the guy we didn't trade got hurt before the start of the season, a bigger problem for us, since we're (now) a win-now team.  I'm of the opinion we should wait and continue to see how each of our three guys performs.  There's no reason why any of their stocks should drop (except Sage's perhaps, who's riding the biggest wave of love after his ten throws last week), and we will have more clarity after our fourth game, who we gain the most from by keeping in the system.  I think this is wise and we have everything to gain from being patient.

There is ALWAYS the chance of an injury in training camp. Why trade away one of your guys before you have to?

But doesn't an injury in camp solve our problem? One goes on IR?

After all, the only kind of injury that destroys trade value is a serious one, not a litte one.

I’m not saying we should be hoping for that or anything, I’m just saying that it would actually make things esier/better, not worse, like you imply. Then we still ahve both options going into next year if Favre is one & done.

There are 32 starting NFL quarterbacks and an unknown number of runaway beer trucks. Save something for a rainy day.

Striving for Fairness

At least wait til this weekend to decide. Give T-Jack one more chance to pull it out, so that the injury can’t be used as the excuse. I think that would be the right thing to do.

Yet, let’s say that tomorrow, T-Jack looks awesome. Does that change anything? If he looks great, does he get to stay and Booty get the boot? I have to ask that because the only thing that Jackson has really proven is that he’s inconsistent; having a great game day tomorrow, after a lousy game last week, is par for the course with him.

If we were really going to give him a fair shake, we’d need to give him a few more weeks to see if he can stay the course, at least 4 of them. Can we afford to take that much time before hurting his usefulness on the market?

My guess is that if he plays well, the Vikings will use that as a way to sweeten or entice trade talks. The word around the league (according to NFLN) is that he would be the most likely to go. I would also think, however, that no trade would be made immediately and they would wait closer to cut dates to see what teams are QB needy due to injury, an organization needing better depth, etc and to help protect themselves in case any other QB on the Vikings roster gets hurt.

Also have trade fodder if we need to replace another position

Jackson could be used to get a serviceable replacement at another position if we experience an injury. Hopefully everyone stays healthy and we trade for a draft pick, but I think trading a QB is a good insurance policy.

My feeling is that there has to be the right talent/payoff ratio. Look, if Jackson excels (granted he’s inconsistent) and JDB shows that he’s still not getting it, and if we can only get, say, a fifth rounder for Jackson and perhaps nothing for Booty, then, I say, keep Jackson and release Booty. I’m still not convinced that Sage gives us any more insurance than Jackson. Worst case scenario, we go into the season with a 40 year old, already injured quarterback as our starters and two guys who can legitimately step up. Booty, by nobody’s account, is ready. And, this is a team that could very easily go into the post season with its third string, given the intrinsic vulnerabilities of Sage, TJ, and Favre.

Good Point

I was just looking at it in terms of who was ready, who had proved themselves not ready and possibly never ready. But as you say, we need to look at the injury possibility….

Let’s face it, coming off an injury to his throwing arm, Favre could collapse at any time. He may feel good today, but how much stress can that arm take, so soon after surgery? It’s an unknown.

Rosenfels just went down, demonstrating his own ability to get injured.

And Jackson seems injury-prone….

Oh hell. Now I’m really leaning towards keeping all 4 of them, this is a scary lineup. At least Booty is young, big and strong, less likely to be injured….
