One growing, one diminishing worry...
Okay, so, two things happened this weekend to change my sense of the division.
I'll start with the bad. Frankly, I thought Aaron Rogers played frighteningly well this weekend. I did not have this sense at any point last year, but am now worried that he could emerge as a very legitimate top-calibre threat this year. I just don't think I could stand it if the Packers turn out to have another stable, top-shelf young gunslinger.
And, for the good. Man, watching the Bears last night made my mouth water. Orlando Pace is an absolute dinosaur. Dumervil is both less explosive and less powerful than Jared Allen and absolutely dominated Pace on the left side of the line. I think the Bears are even weaker along the OL than people predicted, and if they try to add bodies to the left to stop Allen, it will only lead to more opportunities for Williams and Evans. Looking very forward to our match ups with Chicago. Cutler's good, but not deadly.

I guess I already thought of Rodgers (by the way, there is a D in there) as having ALREADY proven himself “as a very legitimate top-calibre threat” LAT year, forget about “emerging as one this year.” So maybe by having already acknwledged that,I’m not freaking out like you. I already thought of Rodgers as the best QB in the division (yes, even after Cutler and Favre showed up).
Seriouisly, didn’t you see his stats from last year?
For me, how far the Packers go is all about their D. They weren’t so good last year, and I figured that the 3-4 transition would mean they would be inconsitent this year. But I’ve ben reading that they are coming along well on that transition. THAT is the thing to watch, not Rodgers.
Unless Rodgers gets hurt. then IMO Packers are in big trouble, their QB backupoptions are dubious.

Still suspect
I’m still a little suspicious of the Packers D. They’ve got plenty of talented players—I’m not disputing that. What I can’t tell yet, though, is how much of their success is because the teams they’re playing against haven’t seen any of this stuff from them before? And also, I think it’s easier for blitzing defenses to have success in the preseason because offenses are often pretty vanilla and aren’t schematically set up to capitalize on it.
So, to put it another way, I’d say that the Packers’ D is the one that might ‘emerge’ this year as very good, but I’ll believe it when I see it consistently for at least four games, whereas Rodgers (as you pointed out) is already there. This year will cement in as one of the top five young QBs in the league (in that rung just below Manning and Brady).
"Come on Eddie, let's get serious."

Sounds like we are on the same page
In Green Bay it’s all about the Packer D. Overhauled for real, or a paper tiger that will be exposed in real season to be as bad as last year’s?

Fair enough. I guess last year I just didn’t see the consistency of zip, decisiveness, and vision we’re seeing in the preseason from Rodgers. I watched him closely and, no doubt, saw him as the best quarterback in our division last year. But, not a potential top-five talent in the league, which, it seems to me, is where he might be slotted at this point.

I think Cutler is pretty deadly...
he has Forte, Olsen, and Hester on that offense with him…

It’s pretty funny to hear a Bears fan claiming that their receivers are what’s gonna make their passign game good. Dude, it’s the other way around, it’s Cutler that will make them look good. If they even do end up looking good (Cutler may not be enough)

Plus, if the guys don’t catch the balls thrown to them; Cutler will throw a hissy fit and say “screw you guys, I’m going home.”

Don't forget about our depth at QB!
If Rodgers or Cutler gets hurt, neither the Bears or Packers have a Back-up QB that can lead them to the playoffs.
If Favre goes down, we got Rosenfels and Jackson.

I think so highly of Rodgers that I drafted him 38th overall in my fantasy football draft yesterday behind Brees, Manning, Brady and Romo (???). The Packers potential weakness is their D, not their offense.

Personally
I would have taken him ahead of Romo. Both on absolute terms, and in the context of what you said about his D. Just think about it, if Packers D still isn’t good, then ball is in Rodgers hands even more. no way would I take Romo ahead of Rodgers. Especially with TO gone.
