Favre Goggles
Alright. Favre played ok tonight, but did the way the announcers view him through their love goggles annoy anyone other than me?
Favre gets sacked, it's a "coverage sack." If TJ gets sacked, he needs to develop "pocket presence."
Favre threw a horrible deep ball that wasn't within 2 feet of the receiver and was almost intercepted. Favre "read the defense" and knew where to throw it. TJ wouldn't be able to "complete the deep ball."
Favre didn't connect with Harvin on that TD pass, it was Percy's fault (though it looked like his arms were extended as far as they could go). If it was TJ, he wouldn't have "touch."
Favre's not even playing, and THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT HIM NON-STOP!!!! This is going to be a long season for me. Sigh...
Is this just me, or does anyone else notice this too?

and guess who the defense was thinking about on the first play of the game until they saw AP in the end zone. I’m fine with it.

yeah cause ap never does that kind of thing.

A-Who?
Anything that distracts people away from AP, is a positive in my 1 page book.

any defense that allows themselves to be distracted away from ap deserves to have and ap td scored on them regardless of who handed him the ball.

I think Harvin COULD have actually caught that pass. But there’s at least some kernel of truth in what they’re saying. Take off your Jackson goggles and look. Jackson simply isn’t better than Favre. I’m far more inclined to believe its a coverage sack for Favre than I am for Jackson, who’s more known to not see wide-open guys at first.
And of course they’re going to talk about Favre even when he’s not playing. He had a decent game, after only a week and a half with the team, and he’s a household name. He’s a big story, there is/was alot to say about him. Really, don’t bother worrying about him garnering such attention.

It's true
The Harvin pass, especially the Chester TD pass, the Shank reception—all these are the types of timely check-down throws that Tarvaris has double clutched on far too many times. Seeing Favre make these throws helps me realize that Jackson probably is a lot closer to being a good starter than I had given him credit for—he just needs to get rid of the blooming ball decisively. I’d hate to lose Booty, but I’d honestly be fine at this point keeping 4 QBs this year to see what a year under Favre would do for Tarvaris.

Yea, one of Tjack’s major issues is confidence. He just needs to take some of the “aw shucks” mentality from Brett Favre and he might actually be a serviceable starter for a team as stacked as we are.

agreed with some of both opinions...
but the pass where favre threw deep into double coverage and just completely airmailed it surely did not deserve the “he’s just reading the defense comment” – at all.
take, that

He had a free play
The defense jumped offsides, so it wouldn’t matter if it were intercepted. It was worth a shot.

no, he didn't
youre talking about the one earlier in the game.

Ya had to love that though
Favre saw the flag, knew exactly what it was, who did it, started to pause, then realized he had a freebie and took the long-shot option. That’s veteran experience, to see everything that happened, understand what it meant, and then try to take advantage of it, all in about 1 second. Sage and T-Jack don’t bring that kind of game-savvy to the table.

You wanna see game-savvy...
Haha I just had to post this video. Go to 1:05 in the video.
I’ll see your Favre’s game-savvy incompletion, and raise you Rodgers game-savvy 60 yard completion.

Catch watch the Tube from work, it’s blocked, so I’ll take your word for it. Doesn’t surprise me that the young Jedi learned a thing or three playing behind the vet, though. Hopefully he can bring that same perspective to our young’un in Purple, too.

The offensive line looked turrible tonight but the thing about Favre is when he dropped back to throw he scanned his recievers well and if there was pressure dumped the ball off fast which is very important for our offense smart decisions.

THIS.
When T-Jax is in at QB, he looks for his first read, then if that isn’t there it’s a checkdown to a second read. Nothing more.
When Favre is in there, he has the ability to view just about every option on the field and STILL get the ball off in time.
That’s the biggest difference I see in their games.

Ya
I loved Gruden (I think it was Gruden, maybe Jaws) showing that replay where Favre blatantly looks to another receiver to set up the defense for where he really wanted to throw it (in this case, back to where he was originally looking).
Also, how good did those little laser passes on slants across the middle look? Awesome.

I don't know about turrible
The O line didn’t look terrible they actually looked darn good pushing out the run. As for pass protection well they were much like a sieve. However, I also didn’t see a lot protection being brought for Favre either. When you have blitzes you either need to bring more people to defend the qb, or you need to change your play calling to get the other team out of the blitz mode. The screen calls were a good way to keep that defense honest. I would still like to see someone back there stopping a middle line backer blitz though. Favre got ate up a couple of times.
My big problem of the night were the rediculous amounts of fouls we had. The game would have been up by six more points (two field goals) at least if we hadn’t flushed away our success with needless fouls
(Although watching Favre block was (while scary) pretty cool)

The deep ball was a free play because the defense jumped offsides. So why not take the shot. What you see as a “horrible deep ball” I see as a smart play from a veteran aware of the circumstances.

stick to the point
the original post was about the gross amount of favre-love happening in the broadcast booth. it was annoying, it’s been annoying for a few months now. it’s going to continue to be annoying for the remainder of the season.
i have some packer fans i work with. each and every one of them came by my office yesterday to ask me if i was going to watch ’favre’s team’ play tonight.
then i get to listen to all the media types gush over favre while watching a pretty mediocre performance. yes, it was mediocre. it’s obvious the guy isn’t in sync with the rest of the offense. i expect it to get better, hopefully sooner rather than later.
then i get to read a lot of posts here at the dn gushing over a pretty mediocre performance by favre. don’t like it? don’t watch! don’t read! right? no thanks. i’m a viking fan. i’ve weathered worse.
the point of this whole thread is that it’s annoying listening to all this favre-love. i want to hear more viking-love during games. when do you think that will happen?
by iseepurplepeople on Sep 1, 2009 1:06 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Never
It will be the Favre show all season long and if they win he wins and if they lose it was because they banked on the wrong man.
I think most Vikings fans who are gushing Favre love right now aren’t doing it because of his stats. I think (at least I am) they are happy because we finally, finally got a qb back there who looks like he can take control of a team instead of just taking up a spot in the roster. Neither Sage, T Jack, Frerrote or even Culpepper for that matter had that kind of ability. When we make it to the playoffs I think a big factor in us going further into it will be that we have someone at the helm who is going to keep us going straight instead of flopping around like we usually do.
by Grime on Sep 1, 2009 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
even though favre hasn’t shown he can win in the playoffs in many years? even though he plays his best football in the first 10 games of the season when we need him least?

Let's hope...
it IS Adrian’s team, right?
The quarterback always gets the ‘lovefest’ or the ‘hatefest’ because they are in on every play.
I heard Gruden say this was Adrian’s team… I hope that catches on.

But then you miss out on Paul Allen. I have to say that guy is one of the better play-by-play guys in the league.
I can understand doing that on primetime or monday night games when we have to listen to people like Cris Collinsworth, but when we have a hometown guy like PA doing the announcing, there is much less Favre loving.
by Bjorno on Sep 2, 2009 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Haha it's true
The announcers definitely had their love goggles on for Favre. Everything he did wrong, had a reason to which, made it ok. I expected it from Gruden because he coached Favre, but Tirico and Jaworski followed right along with it.
I guess I wasn’t surprised though because pretty much all the analysts love Favre. Your going to have to get used to the Favre love when watching Vikes games, even when he has a poor game.

My favorite thing about watching Favre play (besides seeing those zillion mph bullets on occasion) was seeing him convert third and long. We were getting into manageable third downs vs. The Texans only to have a stupid penalty make it third and long, or sometimes even longer, and Favre would convert. Not every time, but he was making things happen. It rocked. And his QB rating was pretty damn high for someone who’s been with the team 12 days. If he kept that rating up all season long, it would go down as one of the best seasons by a quarterback ever. So I’ll take that as a “mediocre” performance.
by Kabuki on Sep 2, 2009 4:54 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
qb rating was 113. 72% completion was good. 7.9 ypa is low. only 142 yds. 6/10 on third downs (one of those was a penalty, one was a run). i’ll take it as mediocre as well.
will it get better? i hope so. there needs to be more long and intermediate completions for me to be happy. i’m sure that will come with time.
