Duante's got me wondering...

I was checking out the PFT one liners for the NFC north and ran accross this article on Daunte Culpepper.  To sum it up, it describes Daunte as looking really good, back to his old form etc etc.  And it got me wondering, we are basically a QB away from being serious, serious Super Bowl contenders.  What if Chilly and Daunte get along?  What if he were still in MN or came back to MN?  Assuming that we still had Peterson and so on, would he make a difference and be better than what we got?  Give me your thoughts.

23 fumbles......

Pretty sure that was his total one of those years. Daunte “Teeny hands” Culpepper can stay right where he is. He would be awful in a WC offense anyway.

That being said, if the Lions let him play this year I think he’ll be great for them. Certainly for the big WR he has to throw to will be happy.

TJack is no better

For his career, Tarvaris Jackson has 14 fumbles in 19 starts, for a rate slightly higher than 73%.
Daunte had a lower rates in 2000 (16 starts), 2004 (16 starts) and 2005 (5 starts due to injury, meaning that Daunte was less fumble prone in half of the seasons in which he was the primary starter in MN).

If you are going to compare Tjack and Culppeppers stats, then you don’t get to cherry-pick what years you use to compare.

You use the first three years with games they started, vs the first three years.

Tjack’s first three years had 14 fumbles with 7 lost in 19 games started. 73% fumble 37% lost

Culpepper’s first three years had 50 fumbles with 21 lost in 43 games started. 116% fumble 48% lost

That’s a pretty big difference.

There is also a BIG difference between fumbling because you are trying too hard to make a play to bring your team back from a deficit, and fumbling the ball when you are ahead by 3 TD’s which was usually the case with Culpepper.

Agreed

NYCVike had already reminded us of what we all remember (that Daunte fumbled often) and cited one of his worst seasons. I didn’t think it was cherry picking since that context was already there.

And your point is also well taken about whether a fumble was likely the crucial play or not.

Also, playing

him this year would allow their new young QB a chance to learn the game with out getting killed by his porous O-Line and developing David Carr Syndrom (DCS). It wold be very smart of the Lions to start Culpeper this year, they aren’t winning anything this year any way.

You assume the Lions are smart though.

When have they proven this is the past?

Go Nevada Wolf Pack!

They aren't.

Stafford’s being given a legitamite chance to compete for the starting job.

IF he's in top form....

If he’s back to top form, and can stay there… why wouldn’t we want him back? Sure, Moss helped his numbers, Moss helps any QB’s numbers when Moss wants to, but we have Berrian and Rice and Wade and Harvin and Jaymar; the Vikings WR corps is coming of age and they aren’t too shabby.

The most important question here is...

“What if Chilly and Daunte get along” – - sorry to say, but this isn’t very likely. Daunte left on pretty bad terms upon Chilly’s arrival (I believe Daunte wanted to stay in Florida to train/rehab while BC wanted him with the team).

Also, Brad has been pretty stubborn with his QB selection (just look at the list of free agent / trade worthy ones since he’s taken over). I doubt he’d want to take in Daunte just because he’s “looking really good”, etc., etc….

Tiny Hands

Thats hilarious, NYC Vike! I agree. I got so sick of the “oops, the ball slipped” crap from that guy that I wouldnt want him on my team EVER again. Period. He had that one, great fling & then pffffffffffft. Knee injury, ego, tiny hands. No thanks. I’ll take Tjack over that jack. And thats saying something for me.

He would eventually melt down mentally & we’d be right back at the end of the Tice era. No thanks!

oops, gotta' give the guy credit

He did kick the Pecker’s arsses in that infamous playoff game though. Gotta’ admit that I do love him for that :)

enthusiasm

One thing I’ll say about Culpepper—he’s still got a boyish enthusiasm for the game, even despite all the adversity he’s been through. Better than someone who waffles about whether they want to come back or not…..

Thus I salute the fortress,
Safe from terror and dread.
