Look who's on the cover of SI this week! Yes, it's our very own "Dominator", aka Purple Jesus, aka The Best Player in the NFL Period, aka AD, aka AP, aka...well, you get it.

I'd normally say that I would now be worried about the fabled SI cover jinx, but Adrian just stiff-armed the jinx and ran 68 yards past it while the jinx looked on helplessly.

Best part is my roommate is a Vikings fan and because of the Madden deal we both get Sports Illustrated.

Twice as much Purple Jesus…

Peterson is semi-divine

i cannot tell you how glad i am the Vikings drafted him, in fact you gotta give props to the Chilly regime for drafting some excellent first picks.

LOL, I’m afraid you have a tough crowd here to sell THAT to. Chilly could discover & draft Jessu Christ himself and there are some people here that would still not “give him porps.” Seriously, some of the dissing that goes on here borders on irrational. He does even a single thing differently than an armchair coach thinks should have been done, and he is an idiot

Yes, a neurosis sets in among the fans of those teams who have lived through troubles in the past. Everyone continues to view things colored with the shadows of what went on before, even though Herschel will never run another down again for the Vikings and those four ancient Super Bowls really have nothing to do with the 21st century, except that they still haunt the souls of the damned. Some emotions will only be washed away by such miraculous sights as AD throwing defensive backs off the football field on their cans and scoring his touchdowns anyway.

Every new coach will be a bad coach until hell freezes over, but fear not, my soulful bretheren , for this could be the year that it does.

One thing I try to keep in the back of my mind about this season:

Brett Favre is ‘arguably’ the best QB in NFL history, and by that I mean he’s in the argument. Elway, Marino, Favre – maybe Unitas depending on how you look at it – some people may suggest others, but any reasonable consensus is going to come down to those names.

Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton – again, other people will propose other names, but really at this point in time, I would be skeptical if anyone suggested that any other name is ‘arguably’ the best running back in NFL history.

AD hasn’t been around long enough, but all you’ve got to do is watch him and know that if he stays healthy (and that’s a big IF for any RB), then some day he’s going to be very legitimately in that argument. He is the best RB in the game right now without any doubt.

We’ve seen some great QB/RB combinations in the past – Aikman and Emmit Smith, Unitas and Lenny Moore – a few others. But we’ve never seen what we could be watching this year.

Several years from now, it is not beyond possibility that we could all look back and realize that in 2009 we were watching arguably the best quarterback and arguably the best running back in the history of the game in the same backfield together.

It might be a memorable year in more ways than one.

A.P.

will pass them all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by bleedingpurplesince74 on Sep 16, 2009 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes I have been thinking about that too

Favre v.2009 is not Favre v.GreatestOfAllTime, but still … I know exactly what you mean.

By the way you should inlcude Elway & Davis in your list of QB/RB combinations, IMO. Elway was on decline like Favre, and TD should be (is already) eclipsed by AP, but still a special thing.

by puddnhead on Sep 16, 2009 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I wasn't trying to make a complete list.

Starr, Hornung and Taylor has to be one of the best backfields ever (and all in their prime), but none of them is quite in the argument individually (well, Starr in some quarters).

I think the biggest thing is that none of the very, very best running backs every played with a really great QB. If you look at Brown, Sanders and Payton, the best QB any of them ever shared a backfield with was… Jim McMahon. Favre’s not going to play near his prime, but I think he still has some gas left in the tank, and I just think seeing the two of them side by side is pretty neat (from an historical perspective).

by Migrant lurker on Sep 16, 2009 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

More Importantly.

Regardless of the legacy AP eventually leaves, he plays a combo style taking the best attributes of Brown’s strength, physicality and determination; Sander’s (and Sayers) speed and illusiveness, and Payton’s agility and grace.

As a fan of football and of the Vikings in particular, you have to appreciate any opportunity to watch him in this moment. Later for history.

by LoveHate on Sep 16, 2009 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

more than one way to look at it

Obviously AD has a long ways to go before you start talking top 5 or top 3 “running backs of all time”. But he has had the most impressive first two seasons and a game of any running back of all time. Seriously. His highlight reels rival none. Statistically the only other back that has AD beat is Eric Dickerson. But you look at highlight reels of Dickerson and it is plain to see that if AD makes it 8 seasons or more he’ll go down as the best overall back of all time.

by Sand0 on Sep 16, 2009 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sayers has a pretty impressive reel of highlight film. Peterson is much more like Brown and Dickerson in the way he runs. Sayers was unique. So was Sanders. So was Payton.

At some point, the debate becomes no more meaningful than arguing over whose baby is cuter. Having said that, there really is no dispute that there is a continuum among players, and those at the end of the continuum deserve the adjectives like “elite,” “extraordinary,” or “among the greatest of all time.” Peterson, in the eyes of many if not most (including mine) is at that end of the continuum. It’s not just that he has great stats. Like all the rest in that class, it is the “way” that got the stats that stands out.

Jim Brown, Earl Campbell, Dickerson, Bo Jackson, Sayers, Barry Sanders, Payton, OJ — they are special in the eyes of many not so much because of the stats but because of the way they compiled the stats — they were just clearly better than everyone else on the field at the time.

There are a LOT of really good backs who compiled great stats over a season or a career who are not put in this final, “greatest” category. Leroy Kelly, Chuck Foreman, Terrel Davis, Paul Hornung, Marshall Faulk, Tomlinson, Dorsett, Emmitt Smith, .. heck, the list is endless.

Peterson has already shown that he is in the “greatest” category. Jamal Lewis had the single game rushing record before Peterson broke it his rookie season. Yet, no one talks about Lewis as one of the best all time. People (including me) were talking about AD being among the best of all time even before he broke Lewis’ record. There is a reason for that. We saw what he did against the Bears that season and realized that the WAY he runs makes him elite — the stats are confirmation, but they are not the reason for the way he (or the others in his class) are viewed by most fans.

Having said all that, there is an acid test — the one we all learned on the school yard during recess. Your picking your team. You have one pick for a RB. You can pick any RB from history — in their prime — to be on your team, knowing your opponent gets to pick any other RB that you don’t pick. You haven’t picked any other player yet (a QB, O-line, defense), so you don’t know yet how your players’ skills will mesh. RB is your first pick. You are playing just one game (recess is only 20 minutes after all).

Who do you pick?

Peterson? Brown? Payton? Sayers? Sanders? OJ? Dickerson?

Based on what I have seen? Peterson.

(Use the same test for Basketball. Who do you pick? MJ? Bird? Magic? Kareem? Wilt? Kobe? LeBron? Russell?)

Well stated

A lot of people assume that stats are the final answer to every question, but I think that they’re an attempt to describe a result rather than the cause.

Peterson’s stats are impressive, but no stat can contain the true reality of that 64 yard assault he perpetrated against the Browns this past weekend.

Fitzgerald may not have the stats to say that he’s one of the greatest WRs of all time, but for a period last year, he was like a force of nature and none of his stats will ever encompass it.

sanders in his 6th-8th seasons. he had the savvy as well as the physical tools in perfect moderation.

i say this being too young (ha!) to have seen brown, sayers or oj actually play.

given another 2-3 years of experience, i would switch my pick to peterson but right now he doesn’t have that veteran savvy. if he develops that savvy he will be pure magic and we haven’t seen anything yet.

Nope

Maybe if we win a Super Bowl… but short of that, all thaws are temporary; the ice always returns.

Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good...

.
and getting AD on our team makes us about the luckiest damn franchise in the NFL (at least on something)… I wouldn’t trade him for any player in the league. Any of them.

[Of course, we do have to give management some credit for being “good” on this, as well. It is not as if they drafted AD by drawing his name randomly out of a hat…at least I don’t think that’s how they did it….]

It's fun to see

AP on the cover of SI but all this “Purple Jesus” talk… wasn’t Jesus nailed to a cross? The comparison doesn’t seem to fit for me. He was crucified wasn’t he? I don’t see anyone doing that to AP. It just doesn’t fit. I guess I should come up with something better if I’m goning to be critical. The best I can come up with is … I can beat the nickname “AD”.
Ya I can hear it already… Savior blah blah blah. I agree he is the best in the business, period. But savior, Jesus…? Before I get bashed over and over for my comment I just want to say, I have been a VIKINGS FAN since…Well put it this way, I was in Bemidji, Yes Bemidji, watching the Vikings first training camp. Let the bashing begin!

I think you go too deep

As mentioned by you, the Purple Jesus comes from the fact that he turned our team around from the doldrums of mediocracy into a contender. That and it damn near looks like he is hovering above the other players…a ‘’walk on water’’ effect if you will.

Welcome!

I was around but too young to remember it – my first memories are from the 1970-71 season.

I think the PURPLE JESUS comments are funny and meant to inspire some awe…
PURPLE CHRIST would be taking it to far in my mind.

absolutely

I was unfortunate enough to have worked on the demolition crew that demolished the old met stadium.I was roughley 18 teen at the time and believe you me it’s not something I go around bragging about ! I knew that day that as they say “the winds of change they are a blowing” I can only hope that that statue of the viking warrior, I believe his name was oden but please correct me if I’m wrong, will somehow have it in his heart to forgive me and the rest of that crew for the travisty we brought on him and that stadium on that most regretable day in history and allow as another shot at the big game !

Viking Lore

I wasn’t in Bemidji, but I am from Mankato and went to all the camps as a kid. I saw all the Super Bowl losses and still sting from their memory. But I sting because purple blood courses through my veins. Long ways to go this season, and the immediate future is bright, but if I’ve learned anything along the way, enjoy the ride, because you never know where it will lead. I hope this one goes to Miami.

Purple Lazarus

I like that. Now THAT would be a good comeback to all the Peckers calling him “Purple Judas”

But save it a bit longer though … we have to make sure he can still play, and is still playing well late in the season.

Unless of course he stands out in beating GB in week 4. Then unleash it right away ;)
