OK, so here's the question we all need to assess...

Has Chilly's play calling improved?

Last Sunday, there was a mix of runs, passes, and a taste of the Wildcat.  The defense played excellent (aside from a special teams TD and the 2nd team TD at the end of the game, we only gave up 6 pts).

I was not pleased with the onside kick call so early in the game - though Longwell could've kicked it better.

I would give him a "B" overall.

What do you all think??

I guess

I hope we are holding back some things until the GB game. Still way too vanilla on offense but I don’t think we need more.

Obviously the onside was a risk but that is a change for Chilly and I am actually glad to see he has the confidence in his team to take chances.

Yes, better, but C+

I liked the mix of 1st down plays, although I’d rather see more downfield throws and more passes and fewer runs in future games.

The copycat was a real downer, I thought. Bringing in Tarvaris Jackson to run it takes away the surprise, which is half of what’s important in order for that package to succeed. He was 0/1 passing, and Harvin had an 11-yard gain the only time (out of 3-5 plays, I couldn’t find a good source on that, and my attention was always split b/t the Vikes and Chiefs game on Sunday) it produced anything. Childress would have earned more points from me had he been strong enough to resist the copycat bug altogether or use/modify it to be at least as productive as Miami’s last year.

The basic problem with Childress is this: the Vikings are obviously a run-oriented team with AP and CT. He FINALLY drafts a WR in the 1st (a matter of minutes after Andy Reid had set a precedent that that was ok) and his plan is to use him…to RUN out of the backfield…and for TJ to come in and line up as a WR sometimes. All T-Jokes aside, it’s difficult for me to understand why he thinks that he is getting the most out of those players by (mis)using them in those ways. I’m feeling generous, so C+.

Actually, wasn't Harvin more of a RB in college than WR?

I didn’t know the guy before he was drafted but I believe I read that he ran the ball more often than being a WR in college.

by EasternVike on Sep 16, 2009 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

he was more of a RB

in college. that is what most of the pundits were saying right after the draft, that they wondered how chilly would use him, whether as a running back or a wide receiver.

Green Bay or the Windy City..... There but for the Grace of God go I.

In college,

…Harvin had more receiving yards than rushing yards for his career, and he was listed as a WR.

by KC Viking on Sep 17, 2009 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Slot back

Was what he was in college. He ran a lot of options with Tebow, and end around type plays as well. But he also went out on routes a fair amount of the time.

by packallday555 on Sep 18, 2009 12:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

RIght

but as with Eric Metcalf and Dave Megget back in the day (considered scat backs), they had to be listed as RB or WR on the published rosters.

by KC Viking on Sep 18, 2009 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Harvin’s going to get lined up in the slot more often now, especially with Bobby Wade gone. He looks to be on track to become Favre’s favorite target. We desperately needed more speed in our WR corps and to be honest, at the time of the draft, we didn’t know that Jaymar was going to step up his pace the way he did. Harvin was the answer since the top pure WRs were already taken.

anyone else see

the piece on Harvin working with Antonio Freeman to learn to be a route runner?

The Vikes should bring AF in to consult with our receiving corps.

Harvin is both

Thats the great part about Harvin. He is wicked fast so you can use him for quick pitches or sweeps or reverses. Line him up in the slot for quick slants. Once Farve gets a little chemistry going with these guys our passing attack should be just as good as our running game. Line up Harvin & BB both wide and send them down the sidelines. If we catch one of the safteys cheating up for the run we will have single coverage on one of these guys. BB has the height advantage on one side and Harvin should have a step on his guy with his speed. On first down play action fake handoff to AP and let Brett lay it out their to the guy in single coverage. Farve can probably look the saftey to whatever side he wants. Two wideouts max protection. I would try that at least twice a game.

Pick a side

We can’t complain about taking a risk here and there when we’ve complained all along that he was too conservative. I agree that the opening play was odd, but as the announcers were saying, the coaching staff must have seen a patterned behavior to bail out early. They expected to recover. I’m all for taking a shot once in a while.

by nlemke on Sep 17, 2009 7:31 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Me too

I loved the confidence. They basically sent a clear message to Cleveland with that onside kick – “We don’t give a rip if you recover at mid-field. Your offense sucks and we are going to demolish you”.

In reality, I don’t know if that is really the case, but I loved it nonetheless.

Or “Our Defense kicks ass and at most you’ll get a field goal we’ll match on our first possession”

by Hoss-Drone on Sep 17, 2009 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He was copying other coaches

I’m pretty sure it was Bill Parcells who was always known for onside kicking to start the season. The differences: 1) Parcells coached his teams well enough to get it; 2) if memory serves correctly, he waited until the 2nd half since the other team was expecting it.

Childress is also a year late to the the copycat formation.

by KC Viking on Sep 18, 2009 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Play calling was excellent

I thought they did a fantastic job with the offensive game plan. I am somewhat in awe of the effect Harvin has on defensive coverages in just his first game. Check out that vikings.com video where they break down some of those Harvin motioning through the backfield plays.

Basically teams will put 8 or 9 in the box anyways, but with Harvin flying back through there teams are hesitant to crash the backfield. Harvin has speed but more importantly he has great cutting and a running back’s instincts. Teams know that if they give him too much freedom on the edge he could break one.

The Browns played umbrella D by keeping some guys way back and most of them right on the line. They left the middle of the field relatively unguarded. The Vikings didn’t take advantage of this, partially due to Favre’s rustiness and part to do with the fact that other things were working well.

I know it is just Cleveland but bottom line is the Vikings dropped 34 without even taking what Cleveland was “giving them”. They took what Cleveland didn’t want them to take. I am curious what schemes D coordinators will try to hatch to control that Harvin motion through the backfield. Every time the Vikings used that look I think something good happened.

Well

As a coach I would try and mix things up as much as possible when I’m playing a poor team, it gives other teams to much tape to watch. now they have to prepare for cooky onside kicks, wildcat, blah blah blah. Not sure if this is going through Chilly’s head or not…

by Grime on Sep 17, 2009 7:39 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Hard game to tell....

Ive posted here before that I am not a vikings fan, but I follow them because of AP. I have been watching from afar, following the qb situation and the coaching. I am one of those who truely believes the only thing holding the vikings back from a sb is qb play. Then you guys sign Favre. I was on the fence with this signing. Now I am not so sure its about Favre. The play calling was still conservative. Granted, Favre is still working out his trust with the WR, and AP ran all over cleveland. But I definately dont think Favre was used to keep the cleve def honest. cle knew the run was coming, still kept 8 in the box, and AP still just busted through. Here is the thing, the game was still close deep into the second half. Better teams that put 8 in the box will be able to somewhat stop AP. Childress better find some plays (or call plays) that allows favre to make some throws.

by gl12ox05 on Sep 17, 2009 10:28 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

there’s an argument to be made that AP was not feeling well in the first half and that negatively impacted his play.
since we didn’t really get rolling with him until the second half further supports that position.

and we wont know this next game....

since the viking will be playing detroit.I have a feeling it is going to be another dose of AP and the running stable. Do you think Favre will even throw 15 times? How about one pass greater than 15 yards?

No TJack

The play calling has improved because TJack isn’t the one executing the play. Put him back in, and we’ll go right back to the same few plays, over and over.

Sure, Tjack was the cause of all of our offensive woes, even when Frerrotte was under center.

99 yarder vs. CHI

I don’t remember seeing that one in TJ’s games.

I agree that TJ wasn’t the lone cause of all offensive woes, but he certainly contributed a few.

It should be that easy!

Especially when ADAP is on the field. 9 in the box means 1 on 1 coverage for Berrian and Rice. What’s the problem?, why can’t they get open?

Yes

50 yards in the air (45 past the LOS)…almost felt like the Daunte era for a moment.

Of course.

Tjack was not where we needed him to be, but to say that he is the reason for the bland playcalling is silly.

The playcalling was still rather bland with Frerrotte, save for the addition of play-action to the arsenal. Even then, we saw it rarely.

Or, sole reason.

Has chilly's playcalling improved?.....not really

I’m okay with the on-side kick just because it was something different, and it happened early in the game.

I would like to see the Vikings start a game with passing the ball on 1st down, and I wouldn’t mind seeing Taylor and Peterson on the field at the same time too. (less vanilla, more play action)

I didn’t like seeing the Browns sack Favre 4x’s neither. The O-Line needs to protect him a little better than that. The Browns have the weakest 3-4 defense of all the 3-4 defenses we play this year….GB,Pitts,Balt

ST’s return game looked pretty good last week, but their PR/KR coverage was poor. Childress has had the worst ST’s in the NFL for a few years now, and that needs to change.

I like that Childress actually made adjustments for the 2nd half, we haven’t seen that in awhile…lol. But Childress has a loong way to go before I stop calling him predictable.

by chaosg on Sep 17, 2009 8:45 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

How do you know?

That GB is a better 3-4 defense than Cleveland?

http://vikingsmashfootball.wordpress.com/

by BeardedAxe on Sep 18, 2009 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Taking a guess really...

The Packers have good LB’s, a solid pass-rush, and good DB’s. Plus their offense is good, and that should help keep them rested.

The Browns-D has a fat nose-tackle and that’s about it. They did get to Favre 4x’s last week, but that’s more from missed assignments, and Favre holding on to the ball for too-long.
