Anyone else afraid of the cowardly lions?

I am a Vikings fan.  I feel like I have to start this post off with that, because what I am about to say may seem absurd.

I am afraid of the Lions this week.

For some reason, I am scared that the Vikings are going to do what they did last year, and play down to the Lions' level.  Everyone knows the Vikings are a far superior team than the Lions.  The same was true last year, and the Vikings haven't changed a whole lot from last year (besides Favre and Harvin), while the Lions have gotten a total make over.

All I can think about is how the Lions closest games last season came against the Vikings.

I do not think the Lions are going to win.  But I am still scared that the Vikings are going to win by the skin of their teeth, when in reality this team should blow the Lions out of the water.

Am I the only one who feels this way?  Or do the rest of you secretly feel something along the same lines?

I’ll be more afraid if/when the teams meet and Culpepper is healthy and starting for them.

No.

The only way the Vikes lose this is if Brett Farve pulls a Cutler in Detroit.

Yeah

If we have Favre, AP, Harvin & Berrian performing well, then we can’t be stopped.

I think Joe Theisman had it right

he said a week ago that as Brett gets more comfortable with his supporting cast(getting the feel for they’re tendencies) the Vikes Will get better each week and by week 4 LOOKOUT!!!!

as long as Stafford is starting

he’ll have the “deer in headlights” look once again this week. With The Four Norseman rushing in on him, EJ, Chad, and Ben blitzing from the middle and edges and ‘Toine coming from the outside it will be a long day for the Lions’ offense.

Culpepper needs to start for the time being to give them the best chance at victory. The Lions just don’t have the line in front of Stafford yet (or anybody else to throw to after Megatron) for him to gain any sort of confidence. If the Lions rush this project along too fast and he gets too scared in the pocket, this is Harrington all over again.

I agree and disagree

I agree that on “any given Sunday” the Lions have a chance but I disagree with this years team, I have been a Viking fan for 30 years + and studied them intensely in hopes of winning a SB and one thing I must say about this years team is that they have a certain swagger about them, a confidence that I have only seen once before ( the 98 team) and this time we have more pieces to the puzzle. Detroit’s team makeover will hurt them because they lack chemistry. Final Vikes 34 Lions 14

by nmvikesfan on Sep 16, 2009 11:38 PM CDT reply actions

Yes and No

No, because the Lions are worse than the Browns, and the Vikings took care of business. The Lions are starting a rookie at QB, out of 22 positional starters, maybe 9 are NFL quality. They cannot defend the run, they cannot defend the pass, and they cannot rush the quarterback. A rookie QB should struggle mightily with the pass rush the Vikings can bring, and there should be nowhere for them to run the ball.

Yes, because Lions play the Vikes as tough as any team in the NFL. They have nothing to lose, and the Vikes tend to play down to their level of competition and make games far closer than they should. Save for Dan Orlovsky running out of the end zone and a horrible pass interference call, the Lions beat Minnesota at home last season.

It’s a game that has a definite schism potential.

Brett Favre is a Viking, and John Smoltz is a Cardinal. The Cubs and Packers still suck. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I thought I heard something on the Vikings/Lions preview on NFL.com...

That the Lions had one of the higher forced fumble numbers out of the NFL last year… At least they ranked high in something..

Eh...

The Lions always tend to play their best football against the Vikings…

But, I’ll take the Vikings in a big way this week (at the very least), since Stafford is still not game ready. And if the Saints can pick him off 3 times, the Vikings should manage to get about 5. Our DBs are better than theirs.

Hopefully, AP will take his momentum from last week and just run all over them this week.

Embarrassment

Sadly the reason for that is probably that Chi/GB are good teams so a loss can be justified/accepted with a little time (& booze), but a loss to Detroit is in a whole different category.

The VIkings are a better team

I think the Vikings will win.
That being said, The VIkes have lost games like this in the past (reminds me of some other MN team), so I’m kinda worried too.

Vikings will win

Normally I’d be reluctant to say that, lest I encourage the Curse, but this time it’s different…

This time, I don’t think we’ll win because we’re the better team (although that’s an indisputable fact). This time, I think we’ll win because

this
Vikings team will refuse to accept a loss.

Normally

I would be concerned, but I think the Vikings have reached a tipping point this year with the players they have. In too many prior seasons the Vikes didn’t have enough guys with the never give up, I’m going to kick you while you’re down attitude like Antoine Winfield, the Williams Wall, Adrian Peterson, and yes, #4. Our entire defense plays with a nasty attitude, one that reminds me a lot of those great defenses out east—Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and NY Giants. No more John Randle trying to instill a killer instinct in Stalin Colinet and Derrick Alexander.

I think this Detroit game will carry one where the Browns game left off, which is demonstrating that they’re going to win (and get beat) by playing to their strengths and making other teams adjust to them and not the other way around. The Vikes might only win by a touchdown, but if they do that while controlling the clock and never letting Detroit’s offense get tracked, then that’s plenty dominant for me.

What I don’t want to see is the Vikes try to go all 1998 on offense just because they think they need to prove how explosive they are or something. I’d much rather they try to end the game with 300 total yards rushing than 300 yards passing, because that’s who we are.

"Come on Eddie, let's get serious."

Peter King Picks Lions

Seriously. Peter King is picking the Lions beat the Vikings this Sunday: http://www.fannation.com/peter_king_challenge/peter_king?eref=sihpT1

Wow, hell hath no fury like a scorned lover—Peter King specifically says the Lions will win by putting pressure on Favre and forcing mistakes.

im sure there's a reasonable explanation for this....

Bears game is at least logical

With all the Packers love SI has been throwing around it only makes sense for them to think the Bears are very good and capable of beating Pitt on the road. Otherwise how do you explain Green Bay requiring a late 4th quarter bomb on 3rd down to pull out the win.

by Sand0 on Sep 17, 2009 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

ditto to this..

The cover of the SI issue with AP on it (this week i think) has something about the insane and awesome GRIT that GREEN BAY has.. Most normal teams don’t win by a late 4th quarter bomb after forcing 4 inter-freakin-ceptions…

Hey, for all we know

the lions could be the second best team in the NFL right now. There is so much parody in this league that the Lions could finish 10-6 and we’d look back on a loss this week as a tough road game that didn’t swing our way.

With that said I am less afraid of the Lions than I would be on the road against any other team in the NFL besides the Rams.

Well I Say If The Lions Feel They Have Nothing Else To Lose

Than many teams should be partially afraid that the 0-17 Lions could possibly beat them. So I say yes we should be worried a little bit, but nothing too scary.

As The Play Snaps, One Dream, One Team, One Head Coach will be on top! Will It Be The Vikings?

by UnBannedVikingholic on Sep 18, 2009 12:56 AM CDT reply actions

I'd be more afraid if all of the "experts" were picking the Vikings in a blowout

Check it out, everywhere you look, everyone’s picking the Lions to cover the 10 point spread based on what happened last year. Well, guess what? This is not the same team as last year.

Favre will have these guys focused on offense and destroy them.

by Freddyd on Sep 18, 2009 12:21 PM CDT reply actions

Let’s not get too excited here.

The Lions are not nearly as bad as their 0-16 record indicated, and it is a Divisional game at Detroit.

The game will not nearly be as much of a blowout as our love for the Vikes makes us believe. Expect us to play “Chillyball” until AP tears a new hole in a Lion’s ass.
