This is a map that shows the most popular NFL jerseys sold by state. Do any of the states that are colored in as purple strike you as a bit funny? (Hint. . .look just east of Minnesota.)

Other funny state
Pensylvania buys Favre jerseys, but several other states buy Polamalu

Not really
Players new to a team sell the most jerseys, as they haven’t been available until now, (although I think it is surprising that Favre is outselling Vick in Pennsylvania). There are certainly Vikings fans unfortunate enough to have been displaced to Wisconsin, and fans whose love of Favre trumps their loyalty to the Pack… the obvious choice for one of these buying a new jersey if Favre. The rest of WI’s jerseys are split between Rodgers, Jennings, Harris, and many others, I’m sure.

There may not be a schism within the Vikings, but there is definitely a big one in Wisconsin. I read GB and Milwaukee newspaper blogs all last year, and there is a lot of anger at Thompson and support for Favre.
There are definitely a lot of Favre fans in Wisconsin still.

Yes, there is.
I can confirm that; I live in Wisconsin.
The “Favre haters” are very vocal on the chatboards and call-ins and letters-to-the-editor, but I sincerely think that there could even be a silent majority who are actually pulling for him here. That his jersey is selling like that does make you wonder.

Anomalies
Michael Vick is the top-seller in New York State and New Jersey, but Favre is the top-seller in Pennsylvania.
Meanwhile, Polamalu is the top-seller in New Mexico, Alabama, and Oregon.
Chris Johnson is the top-seller in Montana and Vermont.

On a serious note, there are lots of folks who have recently left Minneapolis after tech job layoffs and have moved to Detroit and Sterling Heights where Michigan is offering companies tax incentives to transfer jobs. That would explain some of them.

The Bears are very popular in Michigan, especially western Michigan. A lot of Chicagoans retire up here to live on the lake, and a lot of people just identify closer with Chicago than they do with Detroit. I’m a Lions fan, and frankly in the southwestern part of Michigan, I’m in the VAST minority.

Not exactly a wonderful way to make a first post here
But you say Tatupu is bad when a bunch of people here have bought Brett Farve jerseys? Seriously? One player is a really good young player who should be on the Seahawks for quite some time, the other is old, washed up and probably in his last year or so with the team. What are all the fans going to do with the jerseys when Farve gets hurt or just plain stinks and the Vikings have a new QB in two years?

Assumptions
You seem to like making assumptions.
So you join DN a Vikings Blog, just to troll because you are upset that a Vikings fan feels sorry that Lofa Tatupu is your most popular Jersey? Really?
Wow, where to start. How is Tatupu “my most popular jersey”? I live in California, and I don’t like the Seahawks at all, I dislike them in fact. I don’t want to troll, I simply like this blog and read it occasionally but after reading Jepp’s comment I finally felt compelled to comment here. And I’m not upset in the slightest, just confused as to how someone could feel sorry for people buying a Tatupu jersey when the most popular jersey in in the NFL (I think) is Brett Farve.
First, in defense of Jepp, he never said Tatupu is bad. You are intrepreting it as such
No I wasn’t, read my comment above. I was referring to the fact that he felt sorry for people who bought Tatupu jerseys. I’d buy a Tatupu jersey over a Farve one without giving it a second thought personally.
Nobody cares what Brett Farve is going to do next year or what QB the Vikes will have next year. That’s not why they buy the Jerseys buddy. The man is a football legend and will always be, regardless of how he plays this year.
Really? I’m sure Jets fans felt the same way last year when they proclaimed him a savior. Now half of them have probably already burnt there Farve jerseys and the other half hide them in the back of the closet and hope nobody notices.
Which brings me to my point. I feel the odds are that Brett will be considered unsuccessful if not a downright failure as a Viking by the end of this year or next. Is it a forgone conclusion? Certainly not. But there’s at least a decent chance of it happening. Why would you buy a jersey you might be embarassed to put on six months from now? I don’t get it, Farve was a legend with the PACKERS, your rival, not the Vikings.
Farve won’t be with the Vikings for very long even if he is successful, and when the Vikings have players like Peterson and Allen there’s just no comparison on which jersey I would rather have. Those guys will be in Minnesota for years to come and should be fixtures of the franchise, but instead people buy a Farve jersey. It just completely baffles me.
People buy Brett Farve Jerseys cause they like the guy. Not everyone is a Brett Farve hater like you
Ah yes, anyone who doesn’t want to buy a Farve jersey must be a “Farve hater” right? Please. I buy jersey for players who either have been successful for a their team for a long time or players who will be successful for a long time, not a guy on his last legs looking to make his last hurrah with a new team. Sure, I don’t like Farve, the media obsession has become an absolute joke at this point. When the ESPN guys go live to Ed Werder to see Farve come out of the locker room, it’s just gone way too far. But my dislike of him has nothing to do with it, I just don’t see why you’d by a jersey for a player who’s not likely to really help your team.Should Seahawks fans buy Edgerrin James jerseys because he was good with the Colts 6-7 years ago?
Now please go troll elsewhere
It’s always nice when people are so open to discussion. I guess you don’t want anyone disagreeing with you though right?

Open to discussion...
If there is one.
You didn’t post to start a discussion. You posted to berate Farve and the people that bought his Jerseys.
The point about you being a Brett Farve hater is not because you dont want to buy his Jersey. You referred to him as “washed up” and then said “when he stinks..”.
Your post also clearly says “But you say Tatupu is bad”… and I responded by saying that wasn’t what he said. It’s exactly what you said.
If you’re confused in why he feels sorry, then why didn’t your post just say that. The addition of berating farve added nothing.
Finally if the Jets fans are only blaming Farve for what happened last season, they are short sighted. That was a total team failure and it can’t be pinned solely on Brett Farves shoulders.
by EasternVike on Sep 17, 2009 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I actually did post to start a discussion
I don’t see why someone would feel sorry for people woh buy a Tatupu jersey when so many people buy Farve’s jersey. Farve is a lot worse than Tatupu at this point, that much isn’t really debatable.
The point about you being a Brett Farve hater is not because you dont want to buy his Jersey. You referred to him as "washed up" and then said "when he stinks..".
Well, he is washed up isn’t he? I’d hope that even someone who likes Farve realizes he’s nowhere near the player he used to be. Your right that that I should have said “if” when referriing to his play this year. Regardless I don’t imagine he will play very well.
Your post also clearly says "But you say Tatupu is bad"… and I responded by saying that wasn’t what he said. It’s exactly what you said.
Again, I meant to say “Buy you say buying a Tatupu jersey is bad”. I left out the “buying a” part thinking it would be implied but looking back on it that was not a good assumption. Clearly though Jepp did not say Tatupu is bad and I wasn’t trying to accuse him of saying it. Let’s not argue semantics.
If you’re confused in why he feels sorry, then why didn’t your post just say that. The addition of berating farve added nothing.
That was why I brought up Farve. It seemed Jepp was saying it sucked to buy a Tatupu jersey, I was only pointing out that buying a Farve jersey, which a lot of people seem to be doing right now based on the chart, is much worse (in my opinion). Farve isn’t a good player anymore and won’t be on the Vikings for very long, therefore I don’t see why people would buy his jersey. Frankly, I’d be embarassed to wear it, but that’s just me personally.
Finally if the Jets fans are only blaming Farve for what happened last season, they are short sighted. That was a total team failure and it can’t be pinned solely on Brett Farves shoulders.
It wasn’t all his fault, but he was a big part of it. Farve was just downright bad last year, there’s no two ways about it. Some of it was the injury he had, but that’s still little excuse for how poorly he played in the second half of the season.
by Brendan Scolari on Sep 17, 2009 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Alright, I was a bit harsh in my first response...
but I honestly thought you were just trolling. I was obiviously mistaken about the point you were trying to make. Which is now clear from your responses. I am sorry I did that.
That being said, I’d have to disagree that Farve was downright bad last year. He played excellent prior to being injured. After his injury is when he was terrible. Mangini should have benched Farve and Farve should have known better than to play when he is less than 100% and struggling. The Jets coaching staff is as much blame here as Farve is.
I see why you are saying that it is worse to buy a Farve jersey than a Tatupu jersey because Farve is on his last legs and Tatupu is up and coming. In response I was just trying to say that a lot of people just plain like the guy. If I bought a #4 Jersey, I would be buying it cause I like the player. I don’t think it is a necessity that the player be good in order to be liked. It’s very possible that Brett Farve could suck this year but when all is said and done, a lot of people will still like him.
by EasternVike on Sep 17, 2009 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No worries
Thanks for the civil discussion.
As far as Farve’s play in the first half of the season, I really think most of it was because of the bad defenses he played. His first four games were against the Dolphins, Pats, Chargers, and Cardinals. Against them he was very good but note using DVOA (explained here, a stat created by the great football analysis site Football Outsiders) those were the 14th, 26th, 19th, and 25th rated pass defenses last year. So he wasn’t facing anyone good really.
The next three weeks he playedthe Raiders, Chiefs, Bengals, and Bills who were collectively far below average defending the pass. Farve was terrible anyways, throwing for only 3 TD’s and 8 INT’s.
Farve then had 3 good games against the Rams, Pats, and Titans (again, two miserable pass defenses) before completely falling apart the last five games. He didn’t even manage a 65 QB rating playing against the Broncos, Seahawks, or Bills.
His overall numbers were just bad, he had the most INT’s in the league and ranked 26th out of 41 qualifying QB’s in DVOA.
Now, true, much of that may have been because of the injury but he should have let Kellens Clemens play if he knew the injury would have effected his play that much. It seems pretty selfish to me not to do so when your clearly hurting the team.
Which is not to say that the guy can’t play better than he did at the end of last year, but come on, he’s 40 years old, it’s all downhill from here (as far as playing in the NFL of course!). I wouldn’t hold it against someone for buying a Farve jersey because they liked him as a player but my question would be why not buy a Packers version? If you buy a Vikings Farve jersey you run the serious risk that he ends up in the same scenario he had with the Jets and you never want to wear the jersey again, thus wasting the money you spent.
I don’t know, maybe that’s just me. I wouldn’t buy an old player’s jersey unless he had already been with that team for awhile (think LT or Brady), but not when there’s a chance the fans for that team go on to hate him in the very near future.
by Brendan Scolari on Sep 18, 2009 3:37 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
you being a self proclaimed hater
you sure seem to be following favre pretty closely. You must have some sort of a hate/obsession thing that you need to cope with. Good luck with that.
By the way he was top 3 in completion percentage through 11 weeks prior to his injury. 9 of his 22 INT’s came after the injury. But of course your hater goggles can’t see that.

Some things never change
There were alwasy tons of people who argued Favre was overrated when he was a Packer, citing this statistic and that statistic.
Now that he is a Viking, that continues.
Yet somehow, despite all that, his teams always win. 16 of 17 seasons witout a losing record. And last year the Jets (like the Packers in 92) go from a4-12 team to a winning record their first year with him.
Yeah yeah I know, Jets signed other players, etc. Well, let’s talk at the end of this season, and look at the Jets record then, see if they still have a winning season even though they still have all those other new players they got last year. I’m betting they don’t
by puddnhead on Sep 18, 2009 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, the Jets aren't very good
That doesn’t mean that Farve was any good last year though. Look at the numbers, it’s pretty clear.
And w-l record is a team statistic, not a individual player statistic.
by Brendan Scolari on Sep 18, 2009 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I made an argument while Brett was still retired… after looking at his stats…
That he was consistent
It was hard to draw comparisons between his L’s and INT’s, High yardage games and W’s.
But it is his consistency that makes him a great QB and a good fit for this Vikings team.
There are many variables in the game that ‘make’ a W or an L, as you argue – a team effort.
Brett’s teams win games that ‘QB’ statistically they should lose and lose those that ‘QB’ statistically
they should win. Take last week’s game – not great QB stats, but with lots of points on the board.
I believe he brings something to the game that elevates his team and THAT is what this Vikings team needs.

Some anedotal exp[lanation from wisconsin
Good for these Packers fans. You don’t kick a guy you love & brought you to promised land out of your heart, just because your team told a player it is “moving on”, and the player decides to “move on” himself as well.
“Favre fever still runs deep at Lambeau”
Fans gave no doubt about how they felt as they tailgated Saturday at Lambeau Field in the hours before the preseason game. Sentiments were fairly evenly split over the now-Vikings quarterback.
“He is our hero,” said Ken Ash of Menomonee Falls, one of many proudly wearing Favre Packers jerseys. “I just can’t forget what he’s done for Green Bay.” Ash said he also had a Favre Jets jersey and he planned on buying a Favre jersey in purple…
“I like Favre and I say if he wants to play, let him play,” said his friend Steve Semon, also of Milwaukee. “He did what anyone would do when he lost his job. He went and got another job.”
That job came with a new color, of course, and a good number of Favre diehard fans were ready to plunk down $75 for an official Reebok jersey in purple.
At The Jersey Store on Holmgren Way at the corner of Brett Favre Pass, manager Mike Walters received a delivery of 120 No. 4 Vikings jerseys at 1 p.m. Friday. Just two hours before kickoff Saturday, he had about two dozen left.
“Some people say, ‘Why are they in here? They should be burned,’” Walters said. “Forty to fifty people had preordered them. For the most part, people are being good-natured about it. Yesterday it was almost completely positive. Today’s been a little more mixed.”
