The Viking Offense: We Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet
Yes, I'm channeling a little Bachman-Turner Overdrive here, but Kevin Seifert brings up a pretty good point in his NFC North blog at ESPN.com about the lack of "explosion" from guys not named Adrian Peterson in the Vikings' offense, and one guy in particular.
The Vikings are 2-0 with a quarterback who quite clearly doesn’t have a firm grasp of the nuances of their offense. Favre is tossing to his checkdown receivers and making other high-efficiency throws at a historic rate relative to his career, essentially using the Vikings’ soft early schedule to catch up on a nonexistent offseason.
. . .
"I feel like the full playbook is not being implemented," tight end Visanthe Shiancoe said. "But that’s to be expected. He’s trying to get down this offense and get everybody on the same page. The downfield pass is the last thing to come. We have to protect the quarterback a little better. Right now, we’re doing a lot of play-action, a lot of short passing and stuff like that."
To this point, Brett Favre has thrown 48 regular season passes as a Viking, and 70 total passes in his four appearances as the Vikings' quarterback if you include the pre-season. He currently has fewer yards through the air (265) and is averaging fewer yards per attempt (5.5 ypa) than Adrian Peterson (272 yards rushing and 6.8 ypc). But now that Favre has, essentially, played his pre-season when you consider his two actual pre-season games and his two efforts against Cleveland and Detroit to start the regular season, one would think that the offense might now start opening up a little bit, especially with the Vikings finally getting to head to the Metrodome for their next two contests.
It's a bit arrogant to say. . .or even imply. . .that a team has looked at a couple of regular season opponents as "tune-up" games before they really get into the swing of things, but the more I think about it, the more it becomes pretty clear that that's how Brad Childress looked at the games against the Browns and the Lions. The Vikings have come out sluggish in both of their contests thus far in 2009, having gone into the locker room against Cleveland trailing 13-10 and trailing Detroit 10-7. Against the Browns, they came out in the second half and scored 24 unanswered points before allowing a garbage-time touchdown in a 34-20 victory. Against the Lions, they scored the last seven points of the first half and the first 20 points of the second half en route to winning 27-13. That gives them a margin of 44-10 in the second half of the first two contests. . .and, frankly, that's what good football teams do. They come out of the locker room at halftime, make the necessary adjustments, and destroy the team on the other side of the line from them.
And, yes, I just used the phrase "make the necessary adjustments" to describe a team coached by Brad Childress. Believe me, I'm as surprised as you are.
As of now, Brett Favre is on pace to throw a mere 384 passes at his current rate of 24 attempts/game. That would be, by far, the lowest total of his NFL career. . .his current low-water mark in that category is 471 attempts, a figure he put up in 1992 and in 2003. He had QB ratings of 85.3 and 90.4 in those seasons, respectively. Adrian Peterson is also on pace thus far to only rack up 320 carries. Then again, if he were to somehow keep up at his current pace. . .not likely, but work with me here. . .he'd rush for 2,176 yards and 32 touchdowns this season, both of which I think we could handle.
Is the Vikings' offense full of flash at this point? Outside of Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin, it is not. But right now we have a quarterback that's clearly still learning this offense, yet still went out on Sunday and completed an astonishing 85% of his passes (and is at a 77% clip on the season thus far). They have the best player in football lining up in the backfield, and a serious Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate lining up wherever the Vikings want to put him. They still have the steady inside presence of Visanthe Shiancoe, they still have the deep speed of Bernard Berrian, and they still have the outstanding athletic ability of Sidney Rice.
Is the Vikings offense going to continue along the path it is now? It's hard to imagine that it will. It's going to get a heck of a lot better before things are all said and done.

I have to say that I wanted them to draft Oher cause I thought we’d need someone to replace the corpse of Ryan Cook and eventually take over for McKinnie but now I’m really happy we drafted Percy. The guy is the truth.

I think it's funny
that the Vikings brought Favre in to play within the system, take what the defense gives, and not make critical turnovers, which is what has been missing from the quarterback play in these parts for several years.
So he does that, to almost near perfection after two games, and people gripe (not this post or on this board, for the most part) about ‘not throwing it downfield’, which is the same thing as saying ‘take unnecessary risks’. They gotta pass block better, but the downfield stuff will come when it’s there. And it will be. Personally, I think it’s sweet that Favre can complete a 10 or 15 yard slant with regularity. TJ and company haven’t.
I don’t think the Vikes used the first two games as a warm up, per se, but I don’t think they opened up the playbook, either. In the military, we use the crawl-walk-run theory, which means you have to master basic stuff before you get to the advanced stuff. The Vikes are getting the basic stuff down, to be sure, but I still feel they played with that regular season sense of urgency, as opposed to looking at the game as more of a pre-season tune up.
Brett Favre is a Viking, and John Smoltz is a Cardinal. The Cubs and Packers still suck. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Ummm...
If you’re bringing in a quarterback to not make turnovers, I don’t think you’d bring in the NFL’s all-time interception leader. I’m not saying that to rip on Favre, just that I really don’t think that’s why he was brought here.
We brought him here to win games for us by taking advantage of mismatches when he sees them and completing passes in the clutch. Two things we haven’t had during the Childress era.
He’s tried the former a couple of times, with a little success (needs more time to gel with receivers (Berrian) for that to take off) and he hasn’t needed to do the later. So I agree with you that everyone needs to settle down about the “opening up downfield, blah blah blah, stuff.”
Fire Childress!
If you examine the first two games
closely you’ll see that both the Browns and Lions were playing the sop “8 in the box” stuff against the Vikes and blitzing to beat the band. Given Loadholt’s inexperience, Brett’s been under a lot of heat. Add in the fact that Berrian’s still got a nagging hammy and this explains some of the lack of downfield passing. In the end, all I care about is the score at game’s end. That said though, I want to see a more diversified attack as as good as AD is the pounding takes its toll over a season.

When the Vikes line up with 3 TEs and only 1 WR, you are going to get 9 defenders in the box, almost every time. The defense is noty taking any risk in doing so.
When the Vikes line up with 2 TEs and 2 WRs, there is not much risk at all for the defense to line up with 8 in the box, so most do.
How many times have we seen 8 in the box when the Vikes line up with only 1 TE?
TiggerSr
Well said!
If I can add something to this great post, it would be that perhaps they are holding back the “good stuff” for the better teams that we come up against. Why waste it on teams that we should be able to beat with some standard football? If we start throwing the whole playbook out there now, these better teams will be better prepared to play us. With that said, I think the Vikings look real solid so far.
Pass blocking does need to improve, but we do have a new center in there and a rookie. Our run defense is a little weak in my opinion, too.
I’m just taking it one game at a time and enjoying the wins.
I don't think there's anything wrong with looking at the Lions and Browns as "tuneup" teams.
It would be arrogant if they were any good, but they’ll be lucky to combine for 8 wins all year. The Vikes have a very favorable schedule the first 3 weeks (and based on yesterday’s game, maybe the first 4) and it’s particularly useful to them because Favre wasn’t around for training camp. It gives him a chance to play into shape and work with the receivers against some fairly mediocre competition while division rivals like the Packers and the Bears got thrown into the meat of their schedules right away (I’m not convinced that the Bengals will win 8 games, but they’re better than I thought they were).
Really, the first two weeks couldn’t have gone much better for the Vikes and next week you get the chance to find out if the Niners are for real.

Vikings are playing backwards offensively
In today’s NFL game, you need big plays to score. The days of just churning out 15 play drives coast to coast using 3rd down to convert almost every 1st down are over. Defenses are too good. So most teams use the running game to get little consistent chunks of yardage and move the chains in order to get more attempts at big chunks using the passing game.
Vikings opponents play 8 and 9 in the box and key off AD. The Vikings are using peterson to get either zero yards or a massive play because that is how it works against loaded fronts. Break through and there aren’t many people left to tackle. They are using the pass game to consistently get 3 to 8 yards and move the chains. With a 77% completion rate and 5 ypa average that is as consistent as you could expect from a short yardage game. By comparison they are rushing for over 6 ypa which would be a poor man’s passing game but still respectable when you consider that it is coming by ground with the lower negative yardage plays and lower turnovers that the ground game brings.
Kind of strange to think of it that way. Our running game is our passing game and our passing game is our running game in terms of what function they accomplish relative to other NFL teams.
And to complete the analogy,
the only turnover this year is from the running game.

On second thought
Watching Miami last night they are able to churn out consistent runs all the way down the field with the Wildcat. Or at least they were against the Colts.
If the Vikings get a little better pass protection and start having less success with the dinks and runs they’ll probably go up the field. Unfortunately since this is Chilly’s O they will either run a fade or skinny post to the TE. Heaven forbid we do something fancy like clear with Berrian and run Harvin underneath for a deep out or something.
Remember too
That the Vikes were something like sixth last year in big plays (20+ yards). Very sneaky.
"Come on Eddie, let's get serious."
OK at 2-0
Hey last year we held our breath to see if we could beat the lowly Lions. 2-0 no INT’s and only a bent nail on BF and not biting on the part of fans. I’ll take it. We will not see passes down the field until the blocking gets better. (Note two tight ends in the second half) The team sitll misses Birk. Sully may get better but Birk now is better than Sully now. (Yes I know Sully does not play RT but 2 TE and short splits help him too.) Against the (2-1 or 1-2) Packers would like to see them give it to AP have him run right then reverse to the left, pitch it to BF and go long to either BB or MH. Do it once each quarter and 3 TD’s are in the bank. Wait until GB though. Kick returns past the 20 have been nice.
I blame the play-calling more than anything
defensively it’s easy to Blitz an offense that religiously runs,runs,pass….runs,runs,pass.
Not to mention, there’s not much creativity to their run game neither. It’s pretty much all up the gut, up-hill style running.
I don’t really mind running the ball, but when we’re down 2 possessions and still running on 1st and 2nd down,(sometimes 3rd down too) I get worried.
Childress needs to open the Play Book before half-time, and he should try throwing the ball on 1st down once-n-awhile too. Maybe that will put the opposing DB’s on their heels little bit.
On a side note:
I believe the Vikes-D gave-up 112 rushing yards last week?. They better button-up for F.Gore this week. :~)
Go Vikes!
+1
I have two thoughts on this.
We bring in Favre to take some heat off Adrian and open things up. However, we play “bread and butter” football and don’t spread things out early, otherwise I think we would have more possession time. When we start spreading the offense like we did the 2nd half of the last 2 games, things open up and AP’s runs get longer and stronger.
The other is pass blocking. We have not been doing a good job. Not just this year but the past couple years. We are not buying the time that lesser O lines give their QB’s. Maybe part of T-Jax’s development problem??? We are so groomed to run block it seems we don’t get into pass block frame of mind til later. I have done some timing on the average comparing a few Vikes pass plays to other teams and se seem about a half second behind on the average. There is no scientific method to this but enough that it shows.
I know Favre hates the term but it definitely is game management and a vets poise that makes the difference. Let’s hope the play book produces more.

I'm hoping this Vanilla Offense is just a decoy for the tougher opponents.
I still believe they would have better success passing if they passed on 1st down, and sometimes on 3rd & short too. They need to stop being so obvious with the play calling, especially when we got 2 new guys on the O-line.
Another fun filled Awesome year
You got to be getting your moneys worth already .. I sure am ahaha this is great ,,,that at least the vikes are contenders and yes they know we come to play. Bring it AHHHWoooooo
Vikings New Draft Strategy
Draft explosive players with durability questions that look like future superstars after only a couple of games.
P. Harvin: 9.6 yards/catch (77 yards total, 2 TDs) 9.0 yards/rush (36 yards total) 29.7 yards/return (178 yards total)
Not eye popping, but very efficient.

Do it with a QB next time
Sam Bradford perhaps?
Things are going just fine other than pass protection
I’ve got no problem relying on the run to set up the pass, or to use the pass as a quasi-running play (see Chilly’s comments today).
Also, one thing not mentioned above, our best long-ball threat, Berrian, has hardly played with Favre yet. They are now doing the equivalent of preparing for their 3rd preseason game. Besides Brett getting used to all-new teammates he’s hardly had a chance to play with his main long-strike weapon (and the one where it is probably most important to develop the chemistry).
I’m just fine being patient knowing the long balls will start to come. I’m also just fine wearing down the opponent’s defense with run-run-run, keeping them on the field, and keeping our D on the sidelines.
put a body on 'em
UNREAL
Its amazing all the different takes, sluggish first half, we don’t throw it down field, taking to many sacks, bad teams. Yet we are 2-0 with double digit wins after trailing at the half in both road games. I’m happier than a Dike in a hardware store. We are not even playing on all 8 cylinders yet. As long as this team continues to improve we have nothing (barring major injuries) to worry about. The offense will get more diverse as Favre gets more comfortable. Until we lose don’t worry about how we win. We can analyse what happened when we lose. To borrow a line: Stay thirsty my friends.
Hey, if “faggot” (or “fagget,” as UnBanned spelled it) is inappropriate, then “dyke” (or “dike”) is too. Watch your mouth. You never know who you might be offending.

weapons? yes. line? no.
It’s all very exciting that we have AP, Percy, Berrian, Rice, Shiancoe, Taylor, etc. and that Favre is still learning and should only get better if he stays healthy. That brings me to my next point.
We need an offensive line that can pass protect. Loadholt and McKinnie are great runblockers, but they get beat by speedy guys. Sullivan’s got big shoes to fill, but when I see defenders slip between him and Hutch, I have to assume it was a major error on Sullivan’s part. I notice him far too often. Even Herrera doesn’t look as good as he did last year; his job probably got tougher now that he’s between two first-year starters.
Favre’s getting hit far too often, even with the quick release on short passes. Minnesota needs to have a 6-7 man offensive line on nearly every non-running play: put Kleinsasser one one side of Favre and Chester Taylor on the other. That should buy him an extra second or two which he’ll need to figure out the downfield passing game the team has to find before playing tougher teams.
Milton Berle Theory
Google the Sports Guy’s Milton Berle Theory. I won’t go into details here (might do that in this week’s column), but basically the Vikings were showing just enough to win these first two weeks. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot more fireworks in weeks 3 and 4.

Silver is one of those guys who never liked Favre
He was washed up in 06 is just one of his articles. He’s a 49ers fanboy, so with a win maybe he can have a little tantrum or something.
Some Positive Things About The Passing Game
I’ve read a lot of articles, blogs, and posts on how the passing game under Favre is flawed, from not being dynamic enough to how Favre can’t do it anymore. Yes, Favre is ranked dead last among starting QB’s in passing yards, but here’s a few points that have been overlooked (besides the 2-0 record).
-Favre is third in the list of QB ratings (110.3).
-Favre’s 77% completion rate is first among starting quarterbacks.
He only attempted 48 passes (last in NFL as well) but completed 37 (23rd in rankings)
He has three TD’s and no picks, only four other quarterbacks have no picks as well, and his three scores are the higest among those without a pick (and he hasn’t fumbled the ball despite being sacked seven times). And only seven QB’s have thrown for more than three touchdowns and only one for over five (Drew Brees being the leader with nine).
I’m not saying the passing game doesn’t need to put up far more substantial numbers, it certainly has room for a lot of improvement in sheer production, but I think there are some good points as well, or at least some good signs.

49er fans cautiously optimistic
Was over at a Niners blog, several fans seem to think since they were able to stop the rushing juggernauts of Seattle and Arizona, they should have no problem stopping AP/Taylor. Anyone else think Niner fans have lost touch with reality.
Detroit sucks yes but
Kevin Smith is pretty good. Lewis had 50 odd something yards. The Vikes run D is better than the Cardinals who allowed Gore an embarassing(for Gore) 33 yards on 22 carries. The fact that Seattle’s D is as terrible as it was last year. This no reason to think Frank is going to roll. Our pass rush is better too. Favre will get sacked 2 or 3 times but know when to go down and be okay. Our WRs are faster than their DBs so if the passing game is going to work it is in this game. Especially b/c the Niners will sell-out to try to stop Adrian.
The Niners will not have the same success they did against AP the first time. Singletary isn’t stupid enough to just leave the passing game wide open and get beat by 2TDs to try stop AP and that is what it would take.
Bernard, Percy and AP oh my!
I wrote that way too fast
The fact that Seattle’s D is terrible is a good part of the reason Gore had such a huge day.
Bernard, Percy and AP oh my!
Exactly
watching highlights of that game just showed me how bad the Seahawks are at tackling, not how awesome Frank Gore is.

Lurking Chief fan here
I’m a huge Chief fan, but have been following the Vikes all year (Favre fan). Forgive me if theis has been disected many times here but I’m afraid of the toll all these carries have on Adrian Peterson. He’s a special talent and I don’t want to see him burn out too soon. I look at the current pace he is on:
he’d rush for 2,176 yards and 32 touchdowns this season, both of which I think we could handle.
Really? As a pseudo Viking fan I’d rather a more vertical passing attach and more Chester Taylor. I look at the way my Chiefs abused Larry Johnson in 2006. F***ing Herm Edwards ran LJ into the ground and he hasn’t been the same since. I’d rather see Adrian run 15-20 times a game and save him. There is enough talent with Farvin (Love that term), BB, Taylor etc etc etc that there is really no reason he needs to run for 2,000 yards this year. I’d rather see 10 years of 1,200 yards than 5 years of 2,000 yards and then no AD.
Just my $0.02.

Passing Game can't go foward until blocking improves.
Lets be honest. Farve knows the system he is just getting used to the players. He can throw the ball deep but he needs time. So does the fairly new offensive line. Once the line improves then Farve will have time to throw deep and AP can be used less often. Even Chilly knows that he has to diversify this offense soon.
I don’t understand how our line can play so poorly against 2 Very Bad teams. It needs improvement Now!!! Until then run, run, slant, slant, FARVIN.!!!!!!
Relax, Vikes Fans
AD has averaged 20 rushes per game so far. There is no need to worry about the number of carries that Peterson has each game. While Adrian Peterson may lead the league with 272 yards in two games, he does have a nice 6.8 avg.
As for the legend, Brett Favre, he will be fine. The Vikings pass attack should open up in the upcoming games. Vikings fans should be content that Favre has thrown no INTs, has a 77.1 completion percentage and a QB rating of 110.2 through two games. So what if the deep ball is not there right now? It will be there quickly enough and opposing teams will be afraid to blitz and put in an extra man to stop the run.
Believe me, it could be worse. You could have the Packers o-line. Talk about a nightmare. People were afraid Favre would not last the season. Aaron Rodgers will not last long if he keeps getting pounded the way he has. I really hate to say this, but there is little doubt that the Vikings are clearly the best team in the NFC North.
So just relax as your offense, QB, receivers and team gets things together. It will not be long before you see that rocket arm of Favre’s throwing down field. With the talent he now has (and never had in his career), you will have the extra treat of watching him have a career best completion percentage for a season. He’ll get his TDs through the air and AD will get his yds on the ground. Come season’s end, the Vikings will be where many expect them to be, in the playoffs.
And it will be
I think its great that he is managing the game, managing the game to a win. He is finding what he needs and believe me after watching him 16 years in GB, he has much more that he can deliver on. I think you will see the field streched a little more each week and all the Fans of number 4 will go wild. I have said it once and will continue, the Vikings have the right combination of talent to produce a record year. They need to sync up. Brett will lead well. You will see him go 50 yrds to Harvin. I like the Farvin thing. Have a ball, a blast, a great time. This is the year of the Viking .

I would like to see, just one game with TJ and Harven running the wild cat with a real serous approach too it. Put Tj as QB, Harven to the left half back and AP or Taylor too the right. Man any three could run with the option too pass! Pull the left guard too the right fake to AP and hand off too Harven over the right side. Next play hand it too AP over the left than fake it too Harven too the right. Third play fake both right and left then boot leg for TJ and let him run for a change. I think we could do it better than most! Just some fun too think about!
