Is Brett Favre clutch?
Some people thrive on saying the opposite of what Vikings fans are everyone else is thinking. They, instead, pressured by Packers and Bears fans, choose to bestow their "wisdom" on all of us, albeit probably to provoke a reaction.
"Brett Favre isn't as clutch as you think"
Um... excuse me, David Fleming (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=fleming/090930&sportCat=nfl), but he looked rather clutch to me last Sunday. Let's evaluate your argument...
"I mean, Comeback No. 37 on Sept. 9, 2007 was a classic: a four-play, 6-yard drive that led to a last-second 42-yard field goal to beat Philly, 16-13"
Hmm...since when is holding your own, not making a mistake, and getting your FG kicker an extra 6 yards un-clutch? After all, they only needed a FG to win, not a TD. Seems to me Brett made the smart move, don't you???
"Comeback No. 39? Oct. 29, 2007, an 82-yard pass to Greg Jennings that gave the Packers a 19-13 win over the Broncos in OT...it was in overtime with the score tied at 13. It's a hallmark play, no question, one of the all-time great game-winning throws in Packer lore, but it's still not a comeback and, sadly, doesn't belong on The List."
(Waits for the gasps and laughing to subside)
Ummm - what exactly does it take to impress you, Mr. Fleming? (must be a disgrutled Browns fan - I'd be a pouty-face too)
"He now has ten game-winning touchdown passes thrown in the final two minutes of play. Not 43."
Perhaps you're right, David. I think that Favre definitely should have allowed his opponents to hang around, swing the momentum back their way, and make it that much more agonizing tiring exhausting impressive at the end.
In the words of Bill O'Reilly, this guy is definitely a pinhead...

Sadly that guy is a senior writer
despite his horrible play and his mind-blowing egocentricity
That’s how he starts out – it usually means wahhhhh, he beat my team. He’s just lucky! That’s what I heard since Sunday. The pass was lucky.
If throwing a bomb in overtime in Denver to win the game isn’t a game winning drive, I dunno… just forget it, haterz hate.

Sure he is
He has the most comeback wins of all-time. But he also has is fair share of “non-clutch” moments. (As most do).

Actually John Elway holds the all time record
but what do i know?
by dsludo on Oct 1, 2009 8:34 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He has the most of currently-active QBs though. . . but I suppose you could make the arguement he’s been playing alot longer too. Manning is only 4 CB-Wins behind him.

Sorry
Meant among active players. Probably should have mentioned that. Alright the backhanded comments about me saying you know nothing about football are getting old. I got upset. I shouldn’t have said that too you, again I’m sorry.

Haha alright
As you probably know it’s impossible of knowing what context people mean their comments in! Are you an Eagles fan or a Vikings fan? Curious cause of your picture.

Definitely Vikes fan. I’m just honoring TO for being the ultimate douche bag. Weird I know.

It still kind of creeps me out. There is some other guy I saw who used it for his avatar. At first I thought it was you.
by Salty on Oct 2, 2009 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well I definitely don’t want to creep anyone out, and its totally unrelated to Vikes football…..so I may have to look into other options.
by dsludo on Oct 4, 2009 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think I did too
And the other guy who used that picture as an avatar was an Eagles fan. Pretty sure I just confused you two.

Haha
Yes it certainly was. Did you see the snippet on T.O. on NFL live earlier this week? (If you watch nfl live that is)
T.O. acted very un-T.O. like, and actually didn’t rip into his Qb when they media was trying to egg him on.
Haha random but I just found it interesting.

ya I did. He actually came accross looking good in my opinion. And he showed how the media really is. Trying to bait him like that….I hate the media. hate.

I read an article last year that pointed out that Elway’s stats are actually padded because different teams count different things as comebacks. For instance if it was tied in the fourth quarter and the Broncos won, that was counted as a comeback victory by the Broncos but not by the Dolphins (Marino came up in the article a lot). I wish I knew where I read that.

At least he brings in the ballpark
As many have stated on these pages, having Favre gives a Viking Fan at least the hope that a “Clutch” victory is possible, as we saw Sunday…This is what we have lacked since the Chilly Daze began….He (Chilly) has made some good moves during his tenure BUT overall, gives me a migraine!
Heck, I used to get that sinking sensation when we started sitting on leads we had last year/years prior since arrival of Chilly, knowing that we would give up too many yards/points and possibly the game at the end (conservative/unimaginative playcalling)…plus KNOWING that we had few options to get that “quick 7” through the QB we would possibly need if/when we fell behind….
I am at peace at this point, both with Chilly (know there is room for improvement, but he too is loosening up on his play calling a bit seems, easier I guess to move away from your central tendency (caution, most games are won by less than 14 points and are not the norm????) when you have a good hand to play with?)…I believe as the year goes on, we will see more and more “gee whiz” moments for highlights, and make believers of all!
Favre indeed provides that confidence for those CLUTCH moments, and perhaps the games where he does not get it done (many factors involved, but on top of skill, luck is also involved) should be reviewed in that light. He provides the best chance Vikings have in such a situation based on team members now on the payrol. lMy vote on the clutch poll above by the way was the last…I do not care if we win by 1 point….The fact that we marched the ball downfield and grabbed whatever points we needed is CLUTCH victory for me…
I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

I read that yesterday too.
One of the biggest pieces of biased BS I’ve seen recently (and there’s lots of competition).
After admitting he basically despises Favre, he says this:
“As a tribute, and an apology of sorts, I set out to chronicle each of Favre’s previous 42 courageous comebacks leading up to Sunday’s Metrodome Miracle.”
No he didn’t. He set out to do exactly what he did, which was to discredit the perception.
There are various criteria for what constitutes a ‘comeback’ victory and there are various numbers for Favre and others; I’ve seen 39 and 42 as the numbers and I’ve seen less by other criteria.
I don’t really care what criteria you use, just use the same one for everyone. He comes up with his own rather ridiculous set of criteria (which is ok in and of itself) and applies it to Favre, but leaves Elway’s number sitting up there untouched.
Total pile of crap. This guy doesn’t deserve a second look.

Favre is only clutch among players with at least 30 Clutch performances.
Favre’s body of work speaks for itself. This clown won’t make a dent in his armor with this idiocy.

He's got a point...
Favre should have kicked that FG in Philly, or at least caught the pass he threw to Jennings!
by LoveHate on Oct 1, 2009 8:12 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Apparently it doesn't impress this guy
But even the stat " ten game-winning touchdown passes thrown in the final two minutes of play" is amazing. How many people born in this world even get 10 NFL wins as a starting QB. Forget about in final 2 minutes, ocming from behind. I think Favre has wone something like 190 regular season games, right? I know he set the record, passing Elway, at 171 (give or take one).
So that means 1 in every 18 or so wins of his came with him throwing a TD to come from behind in last two minutes. Wowza. I’m sorry, dude (the guy who wrote what you linked), but evn if you leave all that other stuff out (Broncos, FGs, scores to tie to go to OT etc), even that TEN is impressive!
It’s ironic that this guy’s plan, to tear down Favre’s legacy, is backfiring, at least with me. I cam e away more impressed.
