Cutdown Day Open Thread
Yes, the cuts should be rolling in throughout the day, as all NFL teams have to reduce their rosters from 75 to 53 by 5 PM Central time this afternoon. Feel free to discuss all of the activity, including that of the Beloved Purple, in this thread here.
Also, if you have the NFL Network, they'll actually be airing a "Final Cuts" edition of NFL Total Access at 6 PM Central in which they'll be discussing today's activities. And as long as you'll be watching NFLN anyway, you can catch a replay of last night's game at noon Central time if you so desire.
So there you go. . .discuss away, folks!

Running Backs
I really hope we keep 4 running backs this year. If we decide to only keep 3, then lets trade Chester Taylor so we can get something in return. maybe package him and Rosenfels to the Chiefs?

No way
Tahi and young may be decent, but no way they come close to the A.P./Taylor combo. And the nice thing about Taylor is the guy can throw a wicked block.

chester taylor is #1 checkdown
There is no way we trade chester Taylor, and doing so would be foolish.
A) #1 pass blocking RB on the team.
B) #1 checkdown receiver on the team
C) #1 backup to AP
D) he’s “All-Night”
E) he’s a vet, and he’s key to a Vikings’ playoff run.

Other Team Cuts
Bills just cut Dominic Rhodes, while not a superman by any streach of the imagination, was a guy I liked in short yardage or as the back-up.

We don’t need both. 3 TEs, when one of them is Dugan, makes no sense at all.

Agreed and with the money they gave to Tahi to keep him from the Bengals he seems the most likely to stay no matter what. I think a guy with more potential at the TE position should take Dugan spot if not, use it to keep the 6 WRs, 4 QBs, or 6 CBs.

Need the TE/FB's
They are used on ST’s for the blocking skills they have as well as decent hands…you need guys with some sped for KO and PR blocking..as well as PA,FG/Punts…that is why imo we carry the extra TE/FB’s.

Choices
Fair enough point, but if you have a choice between carrying both Tahi and Dugan, or letting one of those guy go so that you can keep Ian Johnson, what do you do?
Dugan has a much better chance of surviving to the practice team than Johnson does…

by hickenizgriz on Sep 5, 2009 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I feel that back up RB is a position that shines a lot through the preseason. Ian Johnson wasn’t the only 3rd/4th string RB to look goods this preseason. Tyrell Sutton for GB, Andre Brown for the Lions, Danny Woodhead for the Jets, The Bengals, GIants, and Titans are going to have a couple of RBs to choose from, etc. Lots of teams have guys they like and will try to sneak onto their practice squads too. Got to hope for the best.

I think Johnson certainly made the decision between him and Young a little harder last night. Of course, I still think Young did enough already to solidify his place. I wouldn’t mind keeping 4 RBs on the roster though, and dropping Booty. Of course, I’ve never been thrilled about JDB to being with.

I think only 3
And I really want them to keep T-Jack as 2nd string over Rosenfels. I don’t think they will keep both, putting JDB at 3rd string. I understand that it probably won’t happen, but I think it should. I think he has proven himself over Sage this preseason, and I’d be bummed if contracts and politics are the reason for coaches and management to choose differently.

T-Jack Impressive in Pre-Season
I’ve been down on T-Jack from the day they drafted him. I think he’s done a good job this pre-season, though, and I hope they don’t trade or cut him. I’d like to see them trade Sage, and keep JDB as 3rd-string for a year, see if he can’t improve with a year behind Favre/TJack. Whatever happens, we’re screwed if we get to the 3rd QB anyway…

Keep 6 Wrs
We need all 6 of them to keep the pressure off of AD and they have all earned their stay. Booty looks like he is a few years away from being a backup and needs to be cut. Since the 1st preseason game against Indy, T-Jack has looked smooth and has clearly out played Sage.

Keep 6 WR's.
Cut Booty, he sucks. I’d much rather have Jackson as a starter (but that’s not going to happen) over Brett Favre, so I think he should be 2nd string. Rosenfels 3rd. Cut Booty.

After lastnights game....
I can see that Booty get’s cut. So I’m revising my QB list as Lord Voltemort, T.J. followed by Sage. T.J. I still feel will be traded by the end of the season leaving Favre, Sage and a QB who gets cut today excluding Booty.

QB & RB
I think they want to keep TJ because they do not want to give up on him, but he will have to sign a 2-3 year extension with low pay. If not then he is traded or cut. If he is traded if they could put him with a RB (Not AP or CT) to a real bad team and perhaps get help in next year’s draft, so we can move up and get another QB of the future. IN a few days I would love if they would sign CT to an oversized contract. WE need him behind AP and they need to design more play for him like they have already done for Harvin. He is the most underused star we have. Would be a great starter for 3/4 of the NFL teams. The best thing going for TJ is that SAGE and BOOTY played last night.

That makes no sense.
He brought us from a 19-3 deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter two years ago.
He brought us back from a deficit created by frerrotte to win the game last year.
And he was in the process of possibly dong it again vs the Eagles in the playoffs until Birk snapped the ball into the ground.

TJ cannot play from behind. Sage can’t play from in front.
and ‘Old Yeller’ Favre can’t play, effectively (meaning, with a positive effect), after Thanksgiving.
He hasn’t been able to for the past four years.
Psst.
I think it has something to do with his refusal to participate in any team off-season activities – or it could just be his age.
Enjoy. :)

Who do we pick up?
What position or player do you believe we might pick up to add to our 53 roster? I think we still need help at QB but thats not going to happen. If an already established very good WR but a bit old comes available do we jump on the present and abandon one of our young WR?

QB? Nah...
We’re fine at QB, Brett looks good (he’s playing the way we need him to) and TJ has stepped it up. If we keep Jackson, we’re fine at QB. Of course…. TJack might have just played himself out of town, his trade value will never be higher.
As for that WR you’re talking about… Marvin Harrison is still available.

Who do we pick up?
I think we need better blocking up front. TJ is the closest thing we have to a running QB. That means the line must protect the QB alot better than they have been doing. I seriously think we need two good offensive linemen on our first team line. That is a weak link as far as I’m concerned.

Here is the article
Minnesota has waived quarterback John David Booty, according to Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network. That seemingly answers the quandary we posed Friday night after a relative debacle of quarterback play in the Vikings’ preseason finale. Remember, Booty has practice squad eligibility. You can probably assume that Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels will remain on the roster behind starter Brett Favre.

BOOTY BOOTED TJ EXTENDED???
If booty is indeed booted it proves the old adage, "be careful waht you wish for… " he wanted to be drafted by the VIKES. Watch the Pats pick him up and make a QB out of him. I wonder if we will hear in the next day or two that TJ has 2-3 years added to his contract. I don’t think you keep him if he is going to bolt on you after this year, thus reducing your QB stable to maybe a retired BF and some SAGE.

I’m really stoked about that. This year the D is going to crush everyone, the KAO will arrive w/ AD, Percy, BB, Sydney, & co, so we’ll be so far ahead of everyone in the 4th quarter TJ will get plenty of playing time. :)
Favre will retire end of this year, TJ is our QB. Unless he’s pissed that Favre came in and wants out, then we’re stuck with Sage. Of course, we’ll go out on a high note winning the SB this year…

Well, part of my comment was the Kool-Aid talking, but maybe in the 4th quarter with good leads TJ will come in for the last series or two. But not for a few weeks (unless we’re seriously blowing someone out) until Favre gets the timing down with the receivers.

Herron Cut
I am not surprised Herron was cut. It will allow the vikings to keep Onatulu and Brinkley who both have a much bigger up-side as OLB’s than Herron and they should be able to get it done on special teams.

cutting I.J was right move
first and foremost his competition was albert young. AY > IJ easy. Albert young looked able to play NFL football versus opposing teams starters on day 1, while Ian looked like he wished he was still dancing with the cheerleaders in College Ball.

I agree, and I honestly think Johnson winds up on the practice squad.

I.J. potential
AY’s potential just seemes limited to me while IJ could be a better RB in the long run. I think you should keep back-up players for the player they are going to be not who they are right now. If IJ ends up on the practice squad then it’s suddenly a great move.
by Nord_Viking on Sep 5, 2009 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well...
I also like Ian’s potential, but Albert Young looks like a pretty good back right now. I wouldn’t be against seeing Young on the field from time to time. Johnson needs work, he needs time to develop. That’s what the practice squad is for.

Check the stats. IJ had more yards per carry, more yards per reception, and more TDs during the pre-season. How does that make Albert Young better? If anything, AY needs time to develop, cuz he sucks.

There are definate young and promising options out there the Vikings should, and I hope, are looking into. I think it’s stupid for the Skins or any team for that matter to only go with 2 QB’s, but if they let someone go who seems to have the skills and ability, hell, let’s bring the in!

I believe
One of Brohm’s problems (not his only one, certainly) was a self-admitted history of an issue with an overly sweaty throwing hand.
Some believe that wearing a glove maybe/will eliminate that problem, but I am skeptical and need to see evidence of it.
Anyway, as we all know by now, Brohm cleared waivers and made it onto the Packers’ Practice Squad and, likewise, Booty with the Vikings.
The glass is more than half-full.

Does anyone know if there is any resolution with the Williams wall??? We’re one week from the first game, it’s about time a final decision gets made.

Not yet
Either way, this isn’t getting settled this year. It’s going all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Marcus McCauley book is closed
According to Zulgad, McCauley has been cut.

This sucks...
Not because McCauley is any good, but because Benny Sapp sucks so bad.
I now know who I will screaming expletives at on 3rd downs when we’re on D.

OT Drew Radovich and CB Marcus McCauley. McCauley was no surprise with Asher Allen playing so well, but sorry to see Radovich cut. Hope they can get him on the practice squad.

That's a shame
I liked Radovich. Must’ve given his spot to Cooper.
by Eric The Viking on Sep 5, 2009 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Center John Cooper has made the roster..Wow
usual you like backup lineman who can play 2-3 positions…Cooper can only play 1
by TonyO on Sep 5, 2009 5:13 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Not quite sure if I like this move. Maybe they aren’t as confident in Sullivan as they’ve been letting on?
Or maybe it’s Ryan Cook who could be in danger. He was supposed to be the back up C, right?
by Eric The Viking on Sep 5, 2009 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cook is a tackle....
So perhaps with having a back-up center, that leaves a more specialized back-up situation? Just my thought. FUnnyt hing is with Cook, he went to the same High School here in Albuquerque that I finished up at after moving here in 1990. lol I know, totally usless fact, but kinda cool in a way.

Love it!
I was hoping that Cooper would make the team and Radovich would be cut. I believe that Cooper is still on board because he can also play OG. Cook & Hicks stay on because of their versitility and experience

Jon Cooper makes the roster
According to Chip Scoggins, Cooper is on board.

John Cooper the C from Oklahoma made the 53 man roster. Good call.

Cooper?
Maybe he is just too good to cut. Maybe they think they can groom him for BU Guard too?
by ZygiZag on Sep 5, 2009 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think so. Never makes it to the Vikings practice squad and could play more than just center.

Crap.
Would have rather had him than the circus known as Frett Barve.

Nah
Dude, when the Oakland Raiders cut someone as not being good enough to make their 3rd string squad, that’s not someone we want to bring in as our 1st stringer…

Since when are the Raiders a team that you would say is good at making personnel decisions?
Just because THEY dropped him does not mean he is not a viable starter.

Are you crazy?
Garcia is done. If he doesn’t retire, I’d be surprised.
He can’t throw deep, he can’t stay healthy, and he can’t win any games for your team.
by Eric The Viking on Sep 5, 2009 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Except for that game he won last year.
For the Bucs.
Against the Vikes.

Crazy?
He had 12 td’s, 6 ints 2700 yards and a 65% completion percentage last year in 12 games.
He is a prototypical west coast QB and doesn’t make half the boneheaded plays that Favre does.
He wouldn’t have brought the huge mess along with him to our team.
And the guy can still keep plays alive with his feet.
Sure, he got injured last year for four games. That does not mean he can’t stay healthy.
The bottom line is, he would have been a much better option than Favre, and probably 6-7 million dollars cheaper.

old garcia
If we pick him up and keep 4 QB’s with BF they could start an old mans club with cards and stuff. Think about it. If you were considering 4 QB’s with Booty why not consider it with Garcia? Just don’t consider it too much.

Presumably, the Vikes have announced all their waivers to all the other teams in the league now. Why not tell us?

I think everyone is still hung up on IJ because of that bowl game. I don’t think it’s a particularly hard decision nor does it ultimately hurt this team.

Talent
I don’t watch college ball, never saw the bowl game (or any bowl game, ever), and in general, consider kiddie-ball to be only a rough indicator for what they can do when they grow up.
Ian Johnson demonstrated what he could do this pre-season; the man’s a good RB and he came to the Vikings because he wanted to be in Purple. I’d be surprised if he makes it to the practice squad… It might not hurt the Vikings, letting him go, because we’re so deep in quality RBs right now, but we’re 1 injury away from wishing we had him back. With both Booty and Mills going, I would have thought there’d be room for Johnson on the active. I guess they felt more depth was needed elsewhere.

Stats
3 Special Teams Specialists
26 Defensive Players
24 Offensive Players
If defense wins championships (and there’s potential risk of suspensions on defense), this makes sense. Unfortunately, it allows means you let some good offensive players go, but that is a sign of how deep the Viking 2009 roster is.
