Predicting Vikings vs. Saints

It's down to 72 hours before kickoff in the NFC championship game when the Vikings and Saints get reacquainted. Last year, the Vikings pulled out a victory in a wild 30-27 Monday night game.

This year, the Vikings will have additional players: Brett Favre, Sidney Rice, Percy Harvin, Phil Loadholt, and others.

The Saints will add Marcus Colston, Jeremy Shockey, Jermon Bushrod, Sedrick Ellis, Darren Sharper, Mike Bell, and others.

Prediction: the Vikings recognize that to win a playoff game on the road, you need to run the ball effectively. With the crowd noise, running the ball is the path to victory. The Vikings throw in a mix of running plays, and play-action passes. Adrian Peterson, Chester Taylor, Percy Harvin, and Albert Young all contribute to the rushing effort. The Saints are cooled down by the Vikings defense and special teams. Final score: Vikings 25, Saints 12. The Vikings score 3 TD, 2 PAT, 1 two-point play, and one field goal. The Saints score a touchdown, PAT, field goal, and safety. The game is more of a defensive struggle, and is not the wild game people are expecting, except when Heath Farwell, playing linebacker, recovers a fumble and returns it for a touchdown..

If anyone posts their prediction and gets it 100% right, you have bragging rights forever.

This might be the one game all year that the victory is resting on AP on the offensive side of the ball. I love BF but we need to get the rushing game rolling to set up the tone of the game. We can all see it happening, nice runs one after another and then he breaks one long for a TD! Next series a PA pass on 1st and 10 all the fing way down the field to Rice. They can analyze this game all week but it comes down to the Min D to offset the home noise and AP and the O line getting the running game to work. If we cant run on NO we arent as good as I think we are.

You failed to cover the scenario where the Vikings win and the Saints score 12 points or more… Which also happens to be the most likely scenario. :-)

There is also the scenario where the Saints win and don’t score more than 12 points… but god, that kinda game would be awful.

LOL!!! 12 points! 12 points! Prince could score more than 12 points on your secondary!

The Saints’ season average margin of victory is over 14 points!

And then there was that Tampa Bay game. They held you to 17 points, too.

I have respect for the Saints. If they weren’t playing the Vikes I’d be rooting for them. I know your pretty fired up about your team but that’s a stupid prediction. If you care to back it up I’m good for about $300. that I can spare. I’m sure you can find Saints fans that would take that bet.

Yeah that Tampa Bay team beating you at your house must have been fun.

Hey Breesus it’s the NFL & their are upsets every week in this league. You guys destroyed a Cardinals team that beat us & we destroyed a Cowboy team that beat you. So what does it prove? Not much. Our guys will be ready.

by iowaron on Jan 22, 2010 12:54 AM CST up reply actions

Too much

is made of games won and lost during the season. It is not sound NFL reasoning to say b/c team S beat team Z, and team Z beat team V, so it must follow that team S will beat team V.

I was saying it last week too. These teams havent played eachother this year. I’d like to see some more matchup breakdowns.

I don't think

Your regular season finale would have been any different even if your starters were competing. The Panthers were a different and much improved team with those guys.

For Breesus..

All the ‘road’ comparisons and logic used to build a case for a loss… One resounding trend that non-Vikes seem to be overlooking.. ALL LOSSES, ALL GRASS. Put us on turf, and we’ll put on a show. I’ll be just fine with being blessed with ‘worrying’ about performance on grass 2 weeks from now.

All this talk about weak defense on the road, is all idle talk until the same is proven on non-grass surface.

I just can't see us beating the Saints in the SuperDome. :(

Sorry to my fellow Viking fans but I’ve seen too many worrying things this season (Dallas game notwithstanding) from our beloved team on the road to have very much confidence in them at all.

I’ll be the hugely unpopular one but I’m picking the Saints to win, 38-21. I don’t think we stay very close, even…I think they just swamp us right away and continue to roll. They have such a hugely powerful offense and with being at home, if they get up even a TD or more, it’s going to snowball really fast. :(

Doesn’t mean I don’t want us (BADLY!) to win…I do. I just can’t see any scenarios where we go in to that kind of incredibly insane environment and somehow destroy them or even hold them off for very long.

Either way, it’s been (mostly) a great season – nicely capped by that utter dismantling of Dallas. Can’t complain too much about that kind of season. :D

Defense.

Regular Season Defense
Overall
-#6 Minnesota Vikings
-#25 New Orleans Saints
Passing
-#19 Minnesota Vikings
-#26 New Orleans Saints

-#2 Minnesota Vikings
-#21 New Orleans Saints

Post Season Defense
Overall
-#2 Minnesota Vikings
-#9 New Orleans Saints
Passing
-#3 Minnesota Vikings
-#10 New Orleans Saints
Rushing
-#4 Minnesota Vikings
-#5 New Orleans Saints

The Saints Offense can score everytime they have the football. The Saints defense gets high marks for capitalizing on their opponents mistakes (turnovers), giving the ball back to their very good offense.
The key to the game for the Vikings is sustaining long scoring drives – which means: minimizing mistakes, controlling the ball and the clock. This plays to our strength. On defense, our front 4 need to keep bringing the pressure all game long – and by pressure I mean: hurries, bats, hits, and sacks.
If the Vikings set the tempo on defense and offense they will win.

I BELIEVE...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Jan 22, 2010 11:17 AM CST up reply actions

Great analysis, ArizonaVikingsFan...

One point, though, that is fair to make is that for large chunks of the season, the Saints have been missing key defensive starters/contributors…that may have led to their lower defensive standings.

Still, it’s encouraging to read this but what about home-field advantage? The same home-field advantage that had our formerly dormant Defensive-line looking like an entirely new, dangerous D-line? People want to believe that it can work for us at our home field but not at the Superdome? That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. :(

Show me why their huge home-field advantage (that place is like a hurricane – no pun intended) won’t make their defense as monstrous as it makes ours. Please and thanks. Again, I want to believe!

HFA (noise)

is a fan’s wetdream. It’s our opportunity to feel like we are a part of the outcome.
I won’t go as far as saying it’s not important, but it’s not the critical factor.
How did HFA help our 15-1 Vikings out? Wasn’t the critical factor in that game!

It will be loud, no doubt. But if the Vikings set the tempo on Defense, it will be manageable.

Our Defense and HFA last week… Chicken or the Egg? Bye week… rest… planning. Those were the difference makers last week.

I BELIEVE...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Jan 22, 2010 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

Also imortant to remember.

As I showed in a previous post there have only been 6 teams since the NFL/AFL merger to make it to the Super Bowl that did not have a top 10 regular season defense in either total, passing, or rushing. There has been only 1 that has won the Super Bowl. Defense is very important.

The road has been tough this year

When we look back, playing at Arizona wasn’t easy, but the Vikings let themselves get “out-tempoed.”

The Steelers game is the one we almost had. So many “almost” moments in that game.

In Carolina, a variety of one-time factors like the spongy field hurt us.

In Chicago, it was cold and the offense stalled, but we found new life in that second half.

The road victories against Cleveland, St Louis, and Detroit were relatively easy. The road victory against Green Bay was the best road game the Vikings have played this year. We need another one on Sunday evening.

by medicineball on Jan 22, 2010 9:19 AM CST up reply actions

Ok not to be a complete homer here

But we got hammered in Arizona for one reason McKinney and Loadholt were hurt and Favre was getting hammered harder and faster that Paris Hilton at the X Games. Same thing happened to us in Carolina. McKinney was still hurt and he was playing against one of the best DE’s in the game. McKinney is looking much better now and I think that the pressue they put on favre in those two games just isn’t going to materialize like it did. Our D got beat because our O got three and out’d over and over again.

Just saying those road games were set in a bad time for us.

by Grime on Jan 22, 2010 10:06 AM CST up reply actions

Good points

It is amazing how many people thought December was due to some mysterious character flaw or bad karma. McKinney and Loadholt were hurt as you have mentioned. Hutch was playing with a bad shoulder. Herrera had a concussion.

Heck, E. J. broke his leg and Toine was hobbled.

It was like some hospital show, but people were looking for spooky ghosts in the closet.

by Elgar on Jan 22, 2010 2:31 PM CST up reply actions

In addition

the teams that beat us have better corners and cover guys (or just played better) than our opponents most other games, so we needed our O-line to be 100% to support the passing game getting challenged and like you said, they weren’t even close to 100%.

Win the turnover game

The only reason the Saints are a threat is because they create turnovers. If we protect the ball and play our methodical first quarter style that we’ve had all year, it will be fine. The biggest enemy to the Saints is if we hold on to the ball in the first quarter and keep the score low, which is what our games have been like almost every game. Last week the first quarter was scoreless most of the time despite Dallas having great starting field position on every drive – that is until we went up 7-0 with a bomb.

Vikings 28 Saints 20

NO gets a couple long TD passes, sets up one field goal after good field position after the one R. Bush punt return. One more FG on a drive that stalls in the red zone.

Vikings get TD passes to Rice and Shainco. A long Peterson TD adds one more TD. The fourth TD comes when Jared Allen gets a sack/fumble on Brees that gets picked up by a Viking and run in for the score.

OK, that’s all a guess. I do see this as a close game that’s neither a defensive struggle or a complete barn-burner. SKOL Vikings!

In fairness to myself, also...

I’ve been supportive but I’m a lot like Common Man on KFAN, I must have AVATAR syndrome (you’d have to watch the show to know what I’m talking about). LOL

It’s not like I’m NOT going to cheer for us, I just think that home-field will almost always be the difference-maker in these kinds of close games. Furthermore, that stat about Interceptions has me super nervous, too. They’re exceptionally good at Intercepting the ball and we barely do it – according to the stats, you can still win a game even if you give up a single turnover (though the odds drop considerably) but if you give up two or more Interceptions, the stats show that you have nearly a ZERO percent chance to win the game. I hope we can protect the ball against one of the better turnover-generating teams in the entire league. That’s part of why I’m pretty worried – and with good reason.

Still, Favre has done a superb job this year of NOT turning it over so I’ll have to hope he continues true to form. My Favre jersey should help – it’s been a lucky jersey this year and I WILL be wearing it for the game!!

SKOL VIKINGS!

Now You've Done It

Please never mention Dan Cole to me. They ran pieces of Common talking about the Vikes recently on WWL in New Orleans as if he were some KFAN sports guru, trying to indicate Viking fans are all overconfident in an attempt to stir up crowd noise. (They should have let you talk.) The highpoint of Common’s football knowledge is his knowing which end of a golf club is up.

The turnover concern is valid, but just rerun clips of AD withstanding that kung fu attack by the Cowboys last week and allow yourself to calm down.

In Favre’s first season, his only passes which were caught were pulled in by the Washington Redskins, and seeing as how he was playing for the Atlanta Falcons at the time, that was not cool. After 19 seasons he has learned that picks are badness. He’s got lots of weapons to work with now and will look to find Greg Lewis open if necessary, even if he claims later he didn’t even know who that guy was.

All Day to All Day

You know, watching that play I have to ask why we don’t just throw screen passes to AP all day long. If we threw him ten dumpoff passes he’d turn 5 minimum into 20+ yard gains. Too many times this year I’ve seen us just run him into a wall between the tackles and he gets 2 yards if he really fights for it. Why not just turn him loose one on one with the LBs?

Pilot goes to sleep (he was on the street with the team and Bud) and wakes up over Manitoba, explains to FAA that he was in a conversation with his mother and just missed MSP….could happen to anyone right?

Fans across the world to include Prince celebrate madly after their victory – Total of 43o DUIs and 12 Sex Addiction cases are recorded over the 12 hours by Viking fans following the end of the game….

One fan in Dubai is accused of being crazy for climbing Burj Khalifa (tallest building in the world) and screaming out the new Vikings fight song by Prince….He ends up apologizing to the ruler and is forgiven because he is a Viking fan and his actions are understandable when considered in this light….

Guess that is about all I can predict at the moment…If you want to know more, tune in on Sunday/watch the news over the day(s) following…

SKOL and GO VIKINGS!!!!!

Postscript:

Wytefang, please see me after the game…I need to teach you about confidence….

We can start now…

(1) Even in the face of adversity and challenge, you start with your head up….If it is hanging you can’t see the enemy coming….you have beat yourself…..

(2) If handwringing was the way we faced off against our many military enemies over the years (I know this is a game, but the principle is what I am speaking of here, ok?)….we would not be the country we are….Same for the Vikes…I will not say I can’t before I start…EVER.

(3) Blemishes and all, USA is still the country that the world looks to most for keeping their head held high and fighting the good fight, even in the face of seemingly certaiin defeat…remember WWII….The same is true for the Vikes…WE DO NOT SAY UNCLE – YOU HAVE TO EARN THAT W FROM US (please do not remind me now of the 4SB losss or the rest of the important games we may have lost – this is a new playoff game, a new season, and a new team – not the ones of the years where we suffered losses)

(4) Yes is not gonna be easy, yes they are a good team, yes we are not at home, yes they will be hungry, yes they are to be respected as they are good opponents. BUT….NO we do not choose to lose before we go in, NO we do NOT agree that they can win, NO we will not give them one yard more than is humanly possible to prevent, NO we will not give them an easy day, and most important no matter what you throw at us Saints NO – WE WILL NOT LOSE!!!!

To think otherwise we lose before we begin….can you understand? Exactly the mentality that the enemy wants us to have…..

Remember we have Grant, Thor, Prince, and a multitude of others great and regular guys like you and me backing them…they are not alone out there in the arena….they just need to execute…

So hold your head up man – we are gong into battle Sunday!

I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

Screw all of them you have me!

Seriously though Vikings fans are a lot like abused children. We’re looking for that fist, that unexpected hit while blowing out our candles… When we see a good t hing we know bad things will happen, when they don’t and we start to smile WHAM-O down comes the hammer.

The thing is you can be the kid that gets beat down and shat upon or you can be the kid that kills his parents and makes teacozies out of their heads.

It’s a simple question really which kid do you want to be?

Amen. It is inexcusable that Vike fans fail to remember good things, like Ahmad Rashad catching the rainbow from Kramer that kept the Brownies out of the playoffs in 1980 at the buzzer. It’s time to speed dial Ghostbusters.

The past is over. Let’s not focus on repeating it.

Life is not just a Shakespearean tragedy, but kindly remember what the ol’ Bard said; “Cowards die many times before their deaths. The valiant never taste of death but once.”

Editor’s Note: Bobby Moore did not like the name he was born with so he changed it, highlighting that it is choices we control in life, not chances.

I was -1 years old for this game

what an awesome play, found a crappy video of it on youtube, wish i could see the previous hook and ladder play that got them in range from the 20.

As always, I appreciate and very much respect your points and your SUPERB attitude, Vikingfanfrom Afar.

Thanks for the motivation speech. You are correct – but I just want to point out that I’m not failing to root for them. I want them to win this HUGE game! I need the next two weeks to be full of excitement and fun, as things are crazy for me right now. I could use the mental escape. LOL

SKOL VIKINGS!! Make this a winter to remember!!!!!!

I think

this is the first Vikings fanfic I have ever seen. Not that I go looking for it or anything.

Vikings 27 - Saints 17

This is also my official prediction in a pool we have going at work. I’m the only Vikings fan (and there are no Saints fans) in the group and so far the picks are 6 for the Saints and 3 for the Vikings (including myself).

Most non-saints/viking fans are picking the Saints in this game.

But it’s all good. For some reason the Vikings always play better when they aren’t favored.

Vikes 31, Saints 24

Vikes win. Taylor + Peterson 180 yrds on the ground. Peterson catches a screen pass for a TD 30+yards, one other rush TD short yardage. Shiancoe 1 TD catch. Harvin has a 20+ yard reverse. Berrian the other TD. Rice gets shut out for TDs, but has some 1st downs. Favre sacked 2 times, but otherwise kept clean. Negative, McKinnie flagged for 2 false starts. Favre 200+ yards.

Shockey 1 TD, Bush 1 TD, on a screen. Brees throws for 250+ yards but is sacked 3 times. Bush+ that other guy rush for 100 yards total, Bush has 50 with 30 on 1 play.

I could also see a big play from Vikes defense. I’m overdue for a corner blitz (maybe from the slot) from Dontonio Wingfield, sack + fumble. 2 turnovers by Saints. Maybe a Brees pick.

Wouldn’t it be sweet if Jasper Brinkley got a pick on a Brees throw to a gimpy Shockey? Unlikely, but that would get me out of my seat.

Detailed enough? I’ll be lucky if 10% of that is close to correct, but its fun to try.

Remember that the Vikings past...

means nothing to the guys on our team. The Saints past futility means nothing to them either.

Negative thinking by Vikings fans happens because our past means everything to us.

Brett Favre and the other guys could care less about our past championship losses. They weren’t on those teams. And most didn’t care when the 1998 and 2000 losses happened. Brett Favre was 8 the last time the Vikes were in the Superbowl, and he’s the oldest guy on the team.

Think positive and enjoy the moment.

All Day… Peterson is going to bust out, and Taylor too, against a wobbly Saints run defense. Then Favre play action all the way.

Amen, Brother!

but I’m still feeling all knotted up!
