NFC Championship Game Fourth Quarter Thread

The Saints started the third quarter with a big kickoff return that led to a 9-yard touchdown run by Pierre Thomas to give the Saints their first lead, 21-14.

The Vikings answered with a touchdown by Adrian Peterson on a drive that had WAY more drama than it should have, and the Vikings tied it up at 21.

Minnesota is taking over at their own 17 as we start the fourth quarter.

One quarter to go, folks!

Step Up, AD

Yeah, I said it.

Peterson has looked terrible, but the Vikings are going to need the good AD in the fourth quarter, especially with Favre gimpy.

Touchdown, Saints

Five yards on the pass from Brees to Bush. Drive went 7 yards in 3 plays, taking 1:22 off of the clock.

Saints 28, Vikings 21, 12:39 left in the ball game.

This is why we brought Favre here!

“I am Brett Favre. And I see a whole army of my countrymen,
here in defiance of the Saints! You have come to fight as free men. And
free man you are! What will you do without freedom? Will you fight?”
“Two thousand against ten?” – the veteran shouted. “No! We will
run – and live!”
“Yes!” Wallace shouted back. “Fight and you may die. Run and you
will live at least awhile. And dying in your bed many years from now,
would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for
one chance, just one chance, to come back here as young men and tell
the Saints that they may take our lives but they will never take
our Victory!”

The Berrian fumble inside the 10 in the second half?

The Favre interception?
The coin flip?
The kickoff return to start overtime?
The controversial first down spot after the bobble?
The controversial catch for another first down?

When the kick went through the uprights?

Honestly...

the 1998 game still hurts worse. We were CLEARLY better than the Falcons. And the Falcons were just happy to be there (The Super Bowl).

We definitely played better than the Saints tonight, but at no point during the year did I think we were CLEARLY better than the Saints.

by rencito on Jan 24, 2010 9:47 PM CST reply actions

We all knew it would be a tough game.

Hey what can you say guys. We really had our chances we just made to many costly errors.

I'm surprised this hasn't come up yet

How much BS are the NFL overtime rules? We didn’t even get the ball in OT.

The Colorado Rockies aren't a team, they're an armada.

by free7694 on Jan 24, 2010 9:48 PM CST reply actions

I agree completely.

They’re BS in the regular season, but to deny a team that’s fought its way to the conference title game the chance to even have the ball in overtime is a joke. It should have been changed decades ago.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jan 24, 2010 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

What I don't understand is...

Why they don’t come to the obvious solution.

Play out the entire OT. All 15 minutes. None of this sudden death crap.

After 15 minutes if it is still tied, then use the NCAA overtime rules.

by rencito on Jan 24, 2010 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

I'm on board with that.

And if they’re worried about the length of the game, they should at least give the trailing team a final possession to see if they can tie it back up.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jan 24, 2010 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

The problem with that

is how do you define a possession?

What if the Saints start with the ball and thrown an interception. The interception is fumbled and the Saints recover. Does that count as our possession?

by rencito on Jan 24, 2010 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

Not in my book.

I didn’t phrase the idea clearly. The idea is that when one team scores, the opponent gets one final possession to try to tie the game. Sort of like the College rules, but without the ridiculous red zone possessions. The leading team kicks off after their score and plays defense and if they get a stop, game over.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jan 24, 2010 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

Yes we played badly, horribly actually.

However… the refs made so many bad calls favoring the home team that I don’t even understand.

by KGMN on Jan 24, 2010 9:51 PM CST reply actions

Completely disagree

If anything, the refs were in our favor when you take into account the entire game.

Either way, the refs didn’t make us fumble inside the 10 twice. They didn’t make Favre throw an interception at the end of regulation. They didn’t have anything to do with our kick return coverage failures.

Blaming the refs is lazy.

by rencito on Jan 24, 2010 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

Name one bad call that went against the Vikings?

Every call they made in OT was the right one. Nothing on replay was conclusive in the least.

by rencito on Jan 24, 2010 9:56 PM CST up reply actions

Pass interference on Leber

The ball was uncatchable, and it’s questionable whether Leber even touched the guy. Terrible call.

The Colorado Rockies aren't a team, they're an armada.

by free7694 on Jan 24, 2010 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

That one might be debatable

But there were a few 15 yarders that went against the Saints earlier in the game that were phantom calls as well. There was one possession in particular where we got bailed out on a few 3rd downs and ended up scoring a TD. Either way, it was pretty even.

Might be debatable?!

It was ourtight bullshit!

The Colorado Rockies aren't a team, they're an armada.

by free7694 on Jan 24, 2010 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

no disrespect but

i am wondering if you are a troll. Any body who watch it will say it. The ball was un catchable. on top of that. NO.85 push off first. like drew pearson play

by vikefansd on Jan 24, 2010 10:00 PM CST up reply actions

True.

Point is though that there were bullshit calls that went the other way earlier in the game. Like the phantom hit out of bounds, the PI call in the endzone, and the roughing the passer penalty, all of which could have been easy no calls.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jan 24, 2010 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

He was clearly across the first down marker

The point of debate is where he bobbled the ball. But how do you spot it differently based on that?

If the roles were reversed, there is no way you would have said it should be changed.

by rencito on Jan 24, 2010 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

He bobbled it?

Are we thinking about different plays????

by KGMN on Jan 24, 2010 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

All you have to do is look at my history

There was nothing conclusive in that replay to say he didn’t get it. You have to go with the ruling on the field which wasn’t anything outlandish. Spotting a football has to be the toughest thing of any officiating job in sports. We allowed them to get to that point.

by rencito on Jan 24, 2010 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

Look we play bad

But bad refing does not help. You do not think That was a bad spot. you don’t think That was in complete pass.Give me you adress i will send you my dvr copy. You can watch it again.

by vikefansd on Jan 24, 2010 9:57 PM CST up reply actions

I have it on DVR.

How was that a bad spot? Yes, he bobbled the ball, but how do you spot the ball differently when you are talking about inches? You can’t. He still regained control and you have to go with the call on the field.

Where did you see that pass in question hit the ground. No replay ever showed it hit the ground. It looked like his hand was under the ball—you can’t tell for sure one way or the other. Nothing conclusive there.

by rencito on Jan 24, 2010 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

Pete Morelli, is that you?

Only a referee could be that stupid.

The Colorado Rockies aren't a team, they're an armada.

by free7694 on Jan 24, 2010 10:02 PM CST up reply actions

And you think you would be saying that if the roles were reversed?

I’m just being objective as a Vikings fans.

Blaming this one on the refs is pathetic.

by rencito on Jan 24, 2010 10:05 PM CST up reply actions

So you ARE Pete Morelli

That explains a lot.

The Colorado Rockies aren't a team, they're an armada.

by free7694 on Jan 24, 2010 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

Dude look

I never said we play a flawless game. But The biggest call of all the got. Let just say you are right. The PI in over time is questionable. That is the most crucial call. That call give them the first down. other wise they are punting.

by vikefansd on Jan 24, 2010 10:09 PM CST up reply actions

We're not blaming it on the refs.

We’re just saying that because of them, we lost.

by KGMN on Jan 24, 2010 10:22 PM CST up reply actions

His head was at the first down line

The ball was on his lap. when he landed. last i check the head is above the lap

To everyone who says this was worse than 1998

“Here comes Gary Anderson who has’t missed a kick all year”

NEVER FORGET

by Laughing Stock on Jan 24, 2010 9:51 PM CST reply actions

Agree

When we look back on it after a few years, 1998 was clearly worse. That 1998 Vikings team was the best ever and they lost to an inferior team.

New Orleans was outplayed today, but they weren’t inferior.

by rencito on Jan 24, 2010 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

Good run Vikings

Rough one to lose

But a great season none the less

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

by WarWolf on Jan 24, 2010 9:59 PM CST reply actions

Only a great season if you win the SB, imho.

But we did achieve a lot of good things. What sucks is that this team is pretty much peaked out, Favre will leave and we really need someone younger in the future to replace him, the D-Line is aging rapidly, our Secondary needs a TON of work, and unless AP learns to hold onto the damn ball, we need a new RB too. \:(

by Wytefang on Jan 24, 2010 11:40 PM CST up reply actions

Bright side

We have a pretty solid team going into next year. Needs: OL, Mobile QB (assuming Brett will be gone), tighter coverage from the secondary and someone to complement Allen on the DL.

In MHO we probably couldn’t have run with the colts THIS year. I would rather lose this game than hold the record for superbowl losses.

by kenmtb on Jan 24, 2010 10:18 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, LOL..we don't knee all that much...just...

a young franchise QB (super hard to come by nowadays), a new D-line to help Jared since the Williams will be suspended AND too old), a few new faces for the O-line, a new franchise RB who does NOT fumble, and new talented people for our secondary. That’s all we need. LOL

I’m not drinking the kool-aid a second year in a row.
