worse than 98

because we had every opportunity to win this game

i’m too tired to get angry at anything…

Nothing could ever be worse than 98.

Not even that GD game against Arizona where they scored 14 points in 1 minute back in 2003.

by AustinVike on Jan 25, 2010 8:31 AM CST up reply actions

To me this was far worse than '98

My only hope is to be philosophical. It’s just a game. It teaches us about life. Let’s learn the lessons and work harder in our own lives, where we can control the outcome.

My condolences my friends,

I am not a Vikings fan, but I am extremely sad that the Saints, the hated Saints, are going to the super bowl. Your team looked much better than the Saints, sometimes these things just happen. Don’t blame it on Favre, he played his heart out, and you wouldnt have even gotten to this place had it not been for him. But don’t worry, this isn’t the last of the Vikings in the playoffs.

See you here next year!

by Poundtherock on Jan 24, 2010 9:33 PM CST reply actions

It's not so bad...

They’ve never been to the Super Bowl.

Plus we still have 10 guys in the Pro Bowl. Maybe we can set the record for most turnovers in a Pro Bowl game as well this year, who knows.

by AustinVike on Jan 24, 2010 9:39 PM CST up reply actions

Typical Vikings

I’ve said all year that they’d eventually find a way to let us down. They did it again and found ways to lose this game. How many fumbles? The 12 men in the huddle? Unbelieveable?.

by AustinVike on Jan 24, 2010 9:37 PM CST reply actions

we didnt have 8 turnovers

We had 2 picks and 3 fumbles lost. Thats 5 turnovers

I meant 8 cumulative, lost 5.

At least we got three of them back….?

by AustinVike on Jan 25, 2010 8:33 AM CST up reply actions

It's not a turnover if the other team doesn't get the ball

A fumble is not a turnover if the other team doesn’t get the ball. A TURNOVER means you turn the ball over to the other team. So for the fumbles that we got back these are not turnovers. Whoever got 8 turnovers was even worse than the Vikings here…

by Tranquil on Jan 25, 2010 1:37 PM CST up reply actions

Does it really matter now?

Whether it’s 5 turnover’s or not? Either way, we again came up short again and someone else got the chance to go to the “Big Dance”.

im going to rant about a few things

1. Refs hand teh game to the saints in OT with 4 bad calls.
Asher ALlen hold, PI on uncatchable ball, 4th down review should ahve moved the ball back and atleast had a mearurement, and then that last catch hit the ground

2.The VIings ouldnt hold on to the ball.

3. CHILDRESS WHEN U ARE AT THE 30 WITH 2 TIMEOUTS and 1 minute to go

Nice haiku, but it’s just a game. As Vikings fan, we should be used to this by now. I don’t believe in curses, but this team is cursed. Has any other organization lost so many winnable playoff games in its history? Dallas 75, Washington 88, Atlanta 98, NO 2010? I mean seriously, at least Denver won two Super Bowls after years of coming up short. This is the best organization to never have won a Super Bowl and is the best when it comes to blowing it big time. Amazing. Give it away.

I will never...

ever believe that the Vikings can do anything. They dismantled a Cowboys team that IMO was better than the Saints. They dominated the stat column against NO, including turnovers. Any team that commits 5 turnovers in a CHAMPIONSHIP game deserves not only to lose but to be run out of the state. Here’s hoping we see the LA Vikings in the near future so I don’t have to waste my time or energy on this pathetic team anymore.

This seems to have happened for the most part to the whole NFC North for the last few decades, failing to execute in the playoffs, it still does not make this feel better when I saw the Vikes play with tons of heart, I dislike Jared Allen though he along with the whole D line were working their arses off.

I have to say the refs were fair

None of those calls had enough clear evidence to overturn. In fact, Saints fans could be upset about one or two of the unsportsmanlike calls they got. All in all, the refs were not a factor.

Chin up guys.

Pretty much everyone of significance is back next year. It’s not like this is going to turn into a bad team over night. This sucks, I know (I felt it in 2007), but keep your heads up. It’s highly unlikely you’ll go from the NFC championship game to 6-10 the way the Packers did…

BTW, they really have to change the overtime system. It’s not right that a team never gets the ball in OT and loses the NFC Championship Game as a result.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jan 24, 2010 9:53 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think

there will be a retirement drama this year. I think that after this game only one of two things happens.

1.) Favre retires for good.

2.) This loss lights a fire under Favre’s @$$ and he goes through a conditioning program that would make a guy half his age die of a heart attack, coming back fully prepared to lead the team.

I honestly don’t know which I’d prefer, but I hope that I’m right and he makes up his mind quickly.

by ViKINGSoftheNORTH on Jan 24, 2010 10:19 PM CST up reply actions

Well maybe...

… but based on the comments he just made when asked about retirement in his post game presser, I’m not so sure. He said he’d hate to make a decision quick after a game like that, and that he was going to go home and talk it over with his family.

Maybe it’ll be different this year, but that’s pretty much exactly what he said after 2007, and we all know what happened next. We’ll see I guess.

Anyway, if the Eagles really are going to move McNabb, there may be choices other than Rosenfels or Jackson.

"Why didn't Favre run the ball??"

That’s easy to ask, when you’re staring at an instant replay on a while sitting with your bear and corn chips on your comfy couch at home, and you can review the nice empty green space from the networks’ overhead cam, and draw a nice straight line of turf without any defensive backs from Favre to get those 5-7 or so yards.

But if you were Favrein that situation—who knew that the reason they’d called a passing play was because the Vikes NEEDED passing-type yardage to set up Longwell, and you’d had the CRAP kicked out of you all game, and were barely able to get back on the field because your ankle had to be taped back onto your leg after it was sat on by a 300+ pound D-lineman—then I can assure you that LAST thing you’d be thinking would be, “hey, may be I can just run it myself past the line of scrimmage for 7 yards!!”

by tameszu on Jan 24, 2010 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

Um, that should be "beer" in the 1st sentence...

Beer or bear?

Lol yeah you are right in that he was trying to set up the field goal BUT it did look like he had a lot of green in front of him…at least 5-7 yards worth..

Late to this thread

but I completely disagree with the above.
1. It was obvious in real time how much room there was to run. Favre was standing at the 40 when he threw, with the nearest defensive player at the 30 and backpedalling. A simple pump fake and he could have walked to the 35. Favre’s played quarterback in the NFL for 47 years now, surely he can see and recognize the open space just as well on the field as we can on TV.
2. The reason why there was that much room to run is because the QB scamper is one of the primary options on a bootleg. Favre’s run that play hundreds of times before and knows this. If no one is open, half the reason you’re rolling out is to have the run and slide for 5-7 yards (to make the penalty yardage back) option. That’s why it was such a great play call, as opposed to a drop back pass. In that situation, even if the line executes, on a straight drop if no one’s open the only decent option is to throw it away or heave it somewhere and hope to get lucky. But then you’re left with the 57 yard field goal try. Run the rollout and if no one’s open but the blocking has worked correctly, your bailout option is significantly improved over other passing plays, and is better than running a handoff. Don’t think Favre wasn’t aware of why this particular play was called, and what his role was. In retrospect, we would have been better off had Favre decided after the pass to Rice that his body just couldn’t take it anymore, because T-Jac, ironically, would have likely preferred to run, and gotten us a 45-yard FG attempt out of that play.
3. Everyone who has ever played quarterback at any level beyond 6th grade knows that YOU DON’T THROW LEFT WHILE ROLLING RIGHT. Ever. The circumstances don’t matter; that is inexcusable out of a Hall of Fame QB.
4. The nearly dead, missing his ankle, had the crap kicked out of him all game Favre had been on the field the entire series, if I recall, and had already sprinted out further to get to the spot from which he threw on that last play than he would have needed to continue to actually gain five yards. It was valiant that he was still playing, but to praise his guts for staying on the field and then claim that he just couldn’t physically have run that last fifteen feet smacks of apologism.

No one, and I mean no one, here is saying that Favre is the sole, or even the primary, reason we lost that game. But, face facts: that was a colossal mistake, it came at the most critical of all possible moments, and there was no way on God’s green earth we were going to win after it happened. Not to mention that it was, sadly, utterly predictable. Almost cosmically inevitable.

by MCA1 on Jan 27, 2010 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

Nightmare

That was the worst game I’ve ever seen. It was not enjoyable at ALL for me, it was absolutely a heartbreak over and over with ever single stupid turnover. I would RATHER be blown out 41-0, than to be strung along the whole game thinking there was a chance and they this team would man up and get the job done and win the game. I don’t know what’s more surprising: that we lost the ball 6 times or that we turned the ball over 6 times in the biggest game of the year and still had a chance. That’s the worst about this, is I felt we were the better team that game, and minus half of those turnovers this game isn’t even close.

I’m not going to say I’m done being a vikings fan, but its sure tough right now to think about cheering for ANY football team. This really left a bad taste in my mouth about this game and I didn’t like how horrible I felt the whole game. It felt horrible enough to rethink my decision to be so dedicated as a fan.

Truly heartbreaking. I have no confidence in this team.

Still, at the end of the day, life moves on and at least we have a community of fellow long-suffering Vikings fans. I believe there are three great fanbases out there: Red Sox, Cubs, Vikings. What do they have in common? Long periods of suffering. Think of how sweet it was for the Red Sox when they finally won. It will be that way for us and more sometime in the near future. We are masochists

We have to be, having our hearts ripped out by this team again and again and again and still coming back for more.

We blew this game, no question, but you can’t put in on any one guy, there is more than enough blame to go around. The O-Line couldn’t give Favre any time, the running game was inconsistent, Favre had his two picks, the fumbles killed us, especially since we lost I think it was two inside the red zone, the special teams gave up a couple of big plays.

I suppose the only silver lining is that we should have approximately the same team next year, with the O-Line having more time to gel, Sidney and Percy being a year more experienced, maybe AD will get his fumblitis under control, and the young guys on defense will have more experience as well. The only wild cards are whether Favre and Phat Pat come back.

Time to look to the future, just like we Vikings fans always do.

Chester will be gone....

but you’re right, the team will remain mostly intact after Favre is done making waffles and meanders into training camp 4 weeks late. By that I mean, not at all. We’re built to make another run next season. Hopefully EJ is back too.

Turnovers & Refs win the game!

I have been a Vikings fan from the womb in 1968. I have seen it all but I have to say this: Yeah the Vikings had a very rough game. I won’t excuse it. But The New Orleans Dirty Birds, as they were once (and still are) called had the refs help them win. I have one thing to say. UNCATCHABLE BALL!!!!! So I hope the Dirty Birds are happy with their dirty win. For me, football is over and once again I hang up my purple jersey with a since of injustice which adds to my acid reflux. Kenny Rogers=Prophet?

On a warm summers evening, on a train bound for nowhere
I met up with a gambler, we were both too tired to sleep
So we took turns at staring out the window at the darkness
The boredom overtook us and he began to speak
He said, son I’ve made a life out of reading people’s faces
And knowing what the cards were, by the way they held their eyes
So if you don’t mind my sayin’, I can see you’re out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey, I’ll give you some advice
So I handed him my bottle, and he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression
Said, if you’re gonna play the game, boy, you gotta learn to play it right
Chorus:
You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money, when you’re sittin’ at the table
There’ll be time enough for countin’, when the dealin’s done
Every gambler knows that the secret to survive is
Knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep

…..Viking Fans have the blues!

The Vikings Players gave their all……and it just was not enough. Some penalties called at the end of the game that were very questionable. But that is how the dice land sometimes.

The Vikings stood strong and tall, coming back from every every time they were down. Brett Farve gutted it out after having to leave the game after being hit around his ankles (Isn’t that a NFL Penalty?).

New Orleans Saints are a great team, and that does not make the Minnesota Vikings anything less is stature! The had a winning season 13-3, they won the NFC North 5-1, they beat the Dallas Cowboy 31-3, and came in 2nd in New Orleans 31-28 (in Over Time). This game will go down as one if not the best Championship Game. The Vikings gave there all, as did the fans, this was a magical season in Minnesota. Treasure it in your hearts……for everyone knows how difficult it is to get to where the Vikings took us this season.

The Vikings never quit trying, and the luck in the end lead to the New Orleans Saints winning.

I wish the New Orleans Saints best wishes for continuing to Win the Vince Lombardy Trophy.

by tofu on Jan 24, 2010 11:12 PM CST reply actions

Regarding Childress

I don’t understand the vitriol from Vike fans towards our coach. The man has improved upon every year, taking us to the final four this year. The playcalling has been fine, especially with Favres ability to read defenses and audible out of suspect packages.

I don’t know, maybe I’m in the minority. But I like Childress. I think he’s assembled a great roster of talent and his drafts have been awesome. Someone please explain to me how he gets blamed for this teams shortcomings. I am all ears, if you can make a rational case.

by toke1 on Jan 24, 2010 11:20 PM CST reply actions

Can't argue with success, to be sure

that said, there is still something about him that suggests to me he’ll never get the Vikes to win a SB. This team is loaded with talent. Yet, for a variety of reasons, they could not get over the hump. They completely outplayed the Saints in a championship game on the road, yet still managed to lose. It’s the players fault in this case. Yet at some point, the head coach will always be held accountable. The problem with Childress, I see, is that he is a little too mechanical and cautious, though this year is different. But I attribute that to Brett. Hope to be proven wrong in the future. But at this level of play, to get this far does suggest he must be doing many things right, even with the talent.

We all know that art is not the truth, art is a lie that makes us realize the truth.--Picasso

by uncle rico on Jan 24, 2010 11:31 PM CST up reply actions

I have to agree

He’s done well assembling talent and his playbook this game was mostly impeccable. He needs to work on clock management, and of course the 12th man penalty should almost be enough to get him fired. He should hire an assistant to whisper in his ear what to do as the clock nears 2:00.

This loss hurts way more than 1998 loss to the filthy birds. Sooooo many opportunities to win this game, came up short every single freakin time! it blows my mind that a fine organization like this cant win the big one. All curses end eventually, all I could think about was all those Vikings fans that have been going through this for 20 plus years. I am 25 yrs old, loving this team for about 13 years now. Theres been long suffering fans that deserve better. To me it was Superbowl ring or bust. I dont take condolences in losing a close game or watever. I hate saying there’s always next yr. This was our year, our window to win is now a small crack, Favre comes back, we can do this. This loss will stay with me until a week after the Super Bowl is over with. I despise this feeling. Sorry to disagree

but hurt may be subjective anyway. But in 98 the Vikes were coming off a 15-1 season, playing at home, and had a lead going into the fourth quarter. One FG by Anderson ices the game. He misses for the first time all year. Vikes go on to lose in OT. This game, despite the statistical differences, should not have been so close at the end. Turnovers killed a team that was not as favored to win as the 98 Vikes. But again, our pain is subjective.

But I will not be rooting for the Saints in the Super Bowl. They have very cool fans, but I thought they way the team was late hitting Favre (some of which were called) was despicable. I don’t think it’s cool to go after a QB like that to try and hurt them.

There were bad calls on both sides, probably more on us. However, the mugging of Brett Favre was not cool and a really classless tactic. I have no respect for the team or Payton. I have a ton of respect for their cool fans, however.

Correction- GEAUX SAINTS-WE BEAT OURSELVES!

A loss is still a loss, but I would be surprised if you think the Saints played that well in this game. They played smart, but I didn’t see the explosive offense on display. I thought your defense played better than your vaunted offense. If you played really well in this game, our 5 turnovers would not have allowed us to stay in the game. You could say it was our defense that slowed down your offense or that your offense was off, but whoever won this conference final didn’t look very good. Even if we won, I’d be pretty concerned we won playing a mediocre game (if you count the fumbles).
