What Constitutes A Touchdown ?

Let's get serious for a minute.  I thought the purpose of the game was to get INTO the end zone for a touchdown.  It seems that all you really have to do is "kinda get close and the refs will side with you anyway".   I will never claim to know a lot about the ins and outs of the rules of football,  but I was just appalled at the touchdown the Saints were given.   Why is it that when a receiver catches the ball in the end zone, both his feet have to touch within the end zone?   But when you are catching the ball outside the end zone and running to it,  you only have to pass through the air of the end zone with an elbow or whatever?  I wish someone could clear this up for me.   Thank You
