Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

History was made last night, but not in a good way. The Vikings outgained New Orleans 475-257 in total yardage, and that +218 yardage differential is the largest ever for any losing team in NFL postseason history.

From the other side, it didn't feel like we outgained anyone!

Good game, fellas! Hope Farvre comes back. It was kind of funny when he was hurt and they were looking at his ankle and the announcer is like, “They should have Tavaris warming up…but…um….” and yeah, everyone knew Farvre would tough it out. Great game. Who dat! Big respect to y’all.

Come back, Brett!

No reason to second guess leaving Brett in…I highly doubt we are even in that game without him in the pocket. Some of those throws to Shiancoe, Berrian, and Rice were outstanding.

More salt in the wound.

I like it. I am a Vikings fan after all.

Yet another dubious distinction

The Vikings: the best organization to never have won the Super Bowl (sorry Bills).

I am Betting a Record Either Way

Has a team every won a playoff game having -4 in the turnover category??

Fact is we didnt hang on to the ball enough to win. I honestly feel we were the better team on the field, but congrats to the Saints, they deserved to win.

by JATUT on Jan 25, 2010 1:54 PM CST reply actions

Paul Allen said the statistic for that is:

Teams that have a -4 in the turnover column win less than 7% of the time.

His guess was even lower, 3%. I would probably back that…

AND WE WERE STILL TIED!!!

by AustinVike on Jan 25, 2010 1:57 PM CST up reply actions

Side note

Vikings penalties in OT were 44 yards.

Saints total 2nd half yardage: 74.

by AustinVike on Jan 25, 2010 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

Everyone knows we were the better team.

The Saints know we were the better team. Hey the best team doesn’t always win the game. If you looked at the stats without the turnovers you would have thought we had won by a couple of TD’s.
If we would have just held on to the ball we would have. That’s the way it goes sometimes.

by iowaron on Jan 25, 2010 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

The better team?

So the better team committed 5 turnovers (could have been 8 or 9)?

So the better team couldn’t fix their protection that was getting their QB killed out there?

So the better team is the one who lost their composure multiple times in the last few drives (12 men in the huddle, PI on Leber, etc.)?

The better team is determined by the final score on the scoreboard, not the final stats on the stat sheet.

For instance

The Vikings were clearly the better team against the Packers both times this year.

A better team is when a team gives the other team the ball times and still takes them to OT. Then the refs gave you the game.

by koooolaid1087 on Jan 25, 2010 4:22 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Well..

I feel like the Vikings played a better game, but turned the ball over.

I feel like because the Vikings turned the ball over, the Saints were more deserving of the win.

So there is a distinction for me between “better team” playmaking wise, and “more deserving” based on the game overall.

good point

i can buy that distinction

How about by a coin flip

After all was said & done the team that gets the ball 1st has a huge advantage. Never have liked the NFL sudden death rule.

by iowaron on Jan 26, 2010 8:05 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly!

I’ve always said to make the OT a 15 minute quarter and let them play it out! Hell, these are big boys and they’re getting paid a lot of money, they can suck it up!

Here’s how I see the game: The Vikings dominated the game, only to keep screwing it up with turnovers. Once it got to OT, the officials took over. No way the Saints got that first down on fourth and inches, the pass interference call on Leber was BS, and that catch by Meachem? Jesus, don’t even get me started.

What a tough loss

for you Vikes fans. Was in Indy yesterday to watch my Jets lose, but I actually feel OK about it. The way you guys lost was pretty stunning.

I posted a while back that you guys won’t win it with Favre. Hindsight is 20/20 and I have to admit he played pretty incredibly yesterday. But his teams always (with one exception) go down in flames at the end. Why was this year going to be any different. It was a great run this year but now you have to find a qb and you’ve wasted a year in developing one.

I'm going to laugh my ass off at this game, next season.

…when we’re 14-2, and have the Saints in the dome for NFC championship.

by AustinVike on Jan 25, 2010 2:00 PM CST reply actions

UHHH

Without Favre (possibly) and our aging D… I am putting the over under at 8 wins next season.

by JATUT on Jan 25, 2010 2:37 PM CST up reply actions

I agree, 50% +/- 1 game

Favre will be gone. Maybe we can bring Fran out of retirement Tavaris or Rosenfels isn’t going to do it next year. We did well without EJ, but I wonder what would’ve happened…….

by skolman on Jan 26, 2010 8:03 AM CST up reply actions

Aging D?

Other than Pat Williams and possibly Antonio Wingfield :D exactly who is aging? The rest of those guys are in their prime!

Favre will be back, I’d put money on it.

Thats the problem AustinVike its always next year.

It’s like the movie groundhog day. We keep adjusting and we find new ways to lose. Hey next year A.P. can fumble the winning touchdown two inches from the goal line as time expires.

by iowaron on Jan 25, 2010 2:48 PM CST up reply actions

Hey we broke the Tampa Bay Jinx

Somebody somewhere is yucking it up at our expense. Standing over a cauldron of braided yellow locks and viking horns, meanwhile running skewers though the heads of little viking dolls. This has gone way past bad luck. I mean cmon. 75-hail mary 98-missed FG 2010-5 turnovers, plus 4 Superbowl losses, countless playoff games all with the same result. I’m trying to figure it out but I’m drawing a blankman.

by iowaron on Jan 25, 2010 2:43 PM CST reply actions

Yeah the Eagles seem to have some bad Karma too.

We need to play you guys in the NFC championship game next year. That way no matter how bad each team screws up one of us goes to the Superbowl. Crap that won’t work we will just lose the Superbowl. Well it was worth a try.

by iowaron on Jan 25, 2010 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

Excellent...

This can be added to the statistic that states: The Vikings are shown more than any other team on the WRONG end of a highlight reel.

-disgruntled Purple and Gold fan

by TC Mooch on Jan 25, 2010 3:06 PM CST reply actions

its not the stats that cant its how you use them

Aren’t turnovers stats? Ok, take those turnovers away. Do you still win? No! Your “high flying offense” stauled. You did nothing to win.

by koooolaid1087 on Jan 25, 2010 4:40 PM CST via mobile reply actions

We're #1! We're #1!

Yeah that statistic doesn’t make me feel any better.

The Vikings were also

at the time, the only 15-1 team to not win the Super Bowl. Pittsburgh joined us a few years later, but for awhile, we were a club of one.

We’ve also lost five straight NFC championship games, a record.

Woo. Yippee.

It was the best season being a Viking fan

for a very long time. Bretts way of playing will stick in my memory bank for years to come. The Vikings will be alright……..Chilly is actually doing a great job. now to take a couple of weeks off, and then get ready to predict our 2010 draft class.
