Vikings-Free Agency- And the Problems & Hurdles we face
After the jump I am Posting a roster of the Vikings top players and the year their contract expires. If a new labor contract is not signed by March 1,2010 then the NFL goes into a non-capped year. I wanted to try and explain how the new system works and what it means to the Vikings. Although there are many caveats and definitions I am boiling this down to a short explanation. I'm sure if I miss something important our friends will post some corrections or explanations. Under the new rules:
Any player who's contract expires and has been in the league three years or less is an exclusive free agent and must only negotiate with their own club. If they don't want to do that they have to sit out of football one year.
Any player who's contract expires and has been in the league from three to five years is a Restricted Free Agent (RFA)
- The vikes may offer any one of four "one year contracts" to any RFA by March 1, 2010. If they don't then the RFA becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent(UFA)
- The one year contract gives the Vikes a "first right of refusal" to that player and certain draft picks from the team that wishes to sign the player.
- The contract choices are as follows :
An RFA can negotiate with any club he wants with certain restrictions. The restriction is as follows according to AsktheCommish.com ( http://www.askthecommish.com/freeagency/)
"The player's original team maintains the First Refusal Right if the team tenders a contract offer of one year at $1.01 M.
The player's original team maintains the Right of First Refusal and Draft Selection at the Player’s Original Draft Round (from the team with which he signs) if the team tenders an offer of one year at the same amount(s) listed above OR at least 110% of the player’s prior year’s salary -- whichever is greater. The player's original team maintains the Right of First Refusal and Second Round Draft Selection (from the team with which he signs) if the team tenders an offer of one year at $$1.545 million OR at least 110% of the player’s prior year’s salary -- whichever is greater.
The player's original team maintains the Right of First Refusal and First Round Draft Selection (from the team with which he signs) if the team tenders an offer of one year at $2.198 million OR at least 110% of the player’s prior year’s salary -- whichever is greater.
The player's original team maintains the Right of First Refusal and First Round Draft Selection and Third Round Draft Selection (both from the team with which he signs) if the team tenders an offer of one year at $2.792 million OR at least 110% of the player's prior year’s salary -- whichever is greater. - Any player who's contract is expiring that has been in the league for 5 or more years is an unrestricted free agent. This means he can without limitation go on the free market and negotiate with whoever he wants.
- A team can Tag one player with the Franchise Tag. This means a player is paid the average of the top 5 players at his position for one year. Player cannot negotiate with anyone ( unless he is marked as Non-exclusive)
- A team can tag one player (two players if no one is tagged As a Franchise player) as a Transition Player. A Transition player gets paid an average of the top 10 at his position and the team gets a right of first refusal.
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE VIKES
HERE IS A LIST OF OUR CONTRACTS AND EXPIRATIONS from WalterFootball.com
Free agents to be following the 2009 NFL season are marked as "2010" because they become free agents on March 1, 2010. The same goes for future seasons. Age is as of Sept. 1, 2009.

First find the player your interested in and see what category he is in. The RFA designations above are invalid as they are under the old labor contract. Then you can start figuring out whether to re-sign him, Franchise Tag him, Transition Tag him, or offer ane of the four RFA contracts to him. Of course nothing stops you from negotiating a new contract right now before March 1, 2010
The Bad Part for the Vikes.
Because the Vikings were one of the top 4 teams this year they will not be allowed to sign any free agents from other teams Except to replace any Free Agents we lose. However we can not pay the new player any more money than the player we lost receives from his new club. A tit for tat kind of rule.
Chester Taylor (UFA), Ray Edwards (RFA), Tarvaris Jackson(RFA), and Ryan Cook (RFA) are probably the most prized of our players. Chester is the only one that is free to negotiate without restrictions. How the Vikings deal with these players is beyond the scope of this article. I just wanted you to know what the GM is dealing with and for you to not get caught up in the rumors of Free Agent acquisitions.
Hope this was helpful.

But how are the free agency rules affected by retired players?? Phat Pat and Favre could both fall in that category. Retired players need to be replaced too. :(
If you can't laugh at yourself... Who can you laugh at?
The Packers, that’s who.

Yes but you are not allowed to sign free agents to replace them. Must use the draft or trade or trade for players is my understanding.

Ray...
Is the #1 player on that list… Would like to see 3 of the 4 return…(talking bout u Cook!!!).. We are in a position to draft for depth and groom guys to step in later, even if Brett and Pat don’t come back(although it would make us be inclined to draft those postions higher)… Football is a yearlong sport!! Right Lifelong???
Absolutely. But very quiet between May 1st and training camp.
The question is do you Franchise Tag Ray or give him a high one year salary under the RFA. No matter what he will be upset if he can’t get a long term deal he thinks he can get with another team.
My gut feeling is that he comes to terms with the Vikings prior to March. Zigg has been a good owner. Chester might want to go somewhere he can be a starter. If so wish him luck and a high salary ( so we can use that to hire another FA). I think you have to fish or cut bait with T-Jack. We will know when we see how they rank his RFA contract.
I wanted the season to go on for two more weeks but heck this is fun too.

Great Stuff!
In emotional times, prehaps even robots want to go into the past and kill somebody’s mother.
Thanks for focusing on facts and the things we can more readily change, like the future.
Ray Ray needs to be given a long term deal. No one year stuff.
He finished the year playing probowl caliber ball.

I totally agree
The problem is he would have been a UFA if a new labor contract was in place. Instead he can get hosed by being made to play under a one year contract. There are 265 guys in his position in the league. It is not going to be pretty. But we need to try and keep Ray and for a long time.

Thanks!
Found it, very interesting and very clearly stated.
Personally, I think we need to keep most of the squad, with the possible exceptions of Cook, Paymuh, and Hicks. Especially those you noted as the ‘prized players’ on the dangle.
Ah, ah,

From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.

SKOL!
Only you could find a labor contract to be clearly stated. Thanks

I'd hate to see TJack leave
without knowing how much hes actually learned and gotten better this year.
I figure the coaching staff knows since they see him in practise everyday.
We will know on March 1, 2010 when the have to choose which contract to give him

I expect they will offer him a nice contract.
I’m hoping that he doesn’t feel a need to match Jared money. But in that case they can simply place him on a a one year contract and match any offer that other clubs make.

He’ll be forever famous for his line that he is going to set the single season sack record because Jared is on the other side! I don’t think Common will ever let that one go…and he shouldn’t! haha I remember his sack-meter last year…but he started to show up this year.
+1

Well the problem with 10 pro bowlers on your team...
Is sooner or later you can’t pay them all at the same time. I think if we want Brett to come back we have to show him that we as a team and organization have the will to win in the off season. If we sit I’m pretty sure Favre will not come back. As for the peeps we have currently
Tahi should be tossed out of a train 12th man what an idiot.
Cook and Hicks are cheap and know the system very well unless there is a reason to I would keep both of them.
Ray Edwards: Keep him and give him a decent salary with large bonus sections. He obviously needs a reason to play hopefully getting a wad of cash per sack will be enough of one.
Frampton, Paymah and Fred Evans I don’t really care about. I don’t see them doing much at all so it’s whatever they want to do with them is fine with me. Although I would be ok with keeping Frampton.
As for Berrian and Chester Taylor, I don’t think Berrian will be worth trading this year he wasn’t that impressive and Chester, well he’s a good catching back but I’m not sure other teams saw enough of him to offer top dollar for him.
Very true
It is difficult to be able to afford 10 pro bowlers. But if anyone can afford them in an uncapped year its Ziggy. I think all the teams are aware of Chester and his talents. He will be offered a contract. As far as I’m concerned I would like him to stay. But he has been a good Vike and I will wish him well if he has the opportunity to do something that he feels is better for him.

Chester
I think everyone would like to see him stay. But I wouldnt get into a bidding war over a guy that needs to be in a 2 back rotation. I think Young and Johnson are ready to step up into the #2 and 3 spots. Plus Percy has shown to be a nice backfield threat too ( as long as he holds onto the damn ball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Ouch
I wouldn’t get into a bidding war either but I think Chester has proven he can be an every down back. He was our every down back. Not his fault AP was just that good. Now whether his age has affected his ability to be an every down guy will be put to the test. I think Chester might stay because he realizes he has gotten older. But if another team is willing to pay him a lot of money then I wish him well. Not often a guy gets to hit the lottery. Don’t forget we pay him pretty well now.
I like your enthusiasm for our bench guys but I have seen no evidence that they are ready to step in to the roles of #2 back. The coaching staff does know and we will see what they think if they do or do not offer Chester a nice contract.

Was not meant to be a diss whatsoever
I was as happy as hell in Seattle a few years back when Chester pulled off that franchise record 95 yard touchdown run. I know the man has skills. I also know the value of a dependable # 2 (insert position of choice). All I meant is that it seems that Chester will want to be a feature back somewhere. And with that, he’ll continue to demand feature back pay. That is why he signed here in the first place. He would be a huge upgrade in several places, Detroit, Cleveland, Tampa, New England, etc.
Albert Young has looked very capable in each of his two preseasons with the team, and this year he even saw action in a couple regular season games and looked impressive.
