Bleacherreport Article: Favre Scandal Given a Pass Because He's White?

I thought I'd share a link to a Bleacherreport Article that I just saw pop up, that I'm interested to get other DN opinions about.  The author is suggesting that Brett Favre; Ben Roethlisberger are getting off light because they are white.  To me, it appears to be an unfortunate article, which draws conclusions from nothing, and I made my opinion known in the comments section.  I like to check myself, and ask if anyone thinks I'm off-base... but I think articles such as this set race relations backwards, not forwards, and doesn't seek the truth.

Star-divide

It's 2010, and the media is still being accused of racial bias.  I just don't get it.  The author states Michael Vick, Kobe, Tiger all got blasted in the media because they are black, and Big Ben; Favre are getting a pass.  There are multiple issues here, clearly... but let's look at each of the stars and controversies he named:

Vick:  Years of organized gambling surrounding ritualized dog slaughter.  The US loves their puppies, and this sold big time in the news channels, and made them rich.  I think it's the dogs that did it, and the "absolutely guilty" nature of this.  Anyone have any reason to believe race was involved, aside from Whoopie Goldberg dragging race and dog-fighting into it?  (which until that point, I heard nothing about race)

Kobe:  Accused of RAPE, and ... well... it's KOBE, who sells ad sponsorships for networks at the mere mention of his name.  While I agree this was blown out of proportion - there are millions of other rea$on$ why this became so big, and no evidence whatsoever that it was racially motivated.

Tiger:  Again, the BIGGEST NAME IN SPORTS, so follow the dollars here.  Add that with every man's dream of the kinds of sexual adventures that he clearly admitted to... every man just loves thinking of themselves in his shoes.

Big Ben:  All I have to say was already said in another Bleacherreport Article.  Ben isn't nearly as big a star, and means much less to football than Kobe or Woods do to their sports.  It's just not as big a deal.  Now I'm from Ohio, and here we heard a lot about it.  But aside from the star comparison... isn't the scandal itself just not in the same league?

Favre:  We've been through this 1000 times.  So yes the "star factor" is HUGE for Favre, and should ordinarily lend itself to media hype.  Can the author really suggest that Favre is NOT exploited by the media, and crapped on at every opportunity?  Has he ever seen Teddy Bruschi grimace in disgust as he discusses Favre?  I think the difference here, as discussed so many times, is that this scandal is, so far, purely an allegation with no evidence.  Again... how much punishment should Favre receive?  I would completely agree with some serious media circus if some actual evidence corners Favre into admitting he is a lecherous old man.  But we have yet to see this, and I think rightly so.

I tried to tactfully respond in the comments, and I hope that some others may make their opinions know also.  Am I missing something?  I have thick skin, so let me have it.

Let's see....

Vick-Federal crime.
Kobe- Cheated on wife and ’’raped’’ a girl
Tiger- Screwed anything with a vag with a GORGEOUS wife at home and kids to boot

Now..

Ben- Allegedly raped a girl, no charges brought. He’s guilty of being retarded enough to have a couple situations like that and deservedly sat out 1/4 the season and 1/4 his substantial salary. Punished.

Favre- ALLEGEDLY sent cock picks to an adult woman. That’s it. No touchy, no sexy. What the frack is the big deal?

Vick's Real Sin Was Gambling

While the sensationalistic nature of dog-fighting brought the public heat on Vick, it was gambling and associating with gamblers that was the biggest problem.

Ask quintessential White Athlete Pete Rose what gambling charges can do to a sports professional’s career.

The author is racist,

and exactly how was it that Kobe did not get off light?

Kobe Was Only Guilty of Cheating On His Wife

The rape charge against Kobe was pretty clealy crap, and it was deservedly thrown out of court.

by Midnight Rambler on Oct 24, 2010 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

You might know more about it than I do...

… but what I saw was a defense team that repeatedly violated the gag order until the victim said she’d had enough. Not sure that qualifies as “clearly crap” since most victim’s of rape never report in the first place for pretty much the same reason that victim pulled the plug. Is he guilty? I don’t know. My guess is that you don’t either.

Kobe Was Guilty of Picking Up a Crazy Chick

Among other things, Kobe’s accuser hooked up with two other guys AFTER the alleged rape.

Perhaps you are a rape counselor, and can tell me I am wrong to believe that genuine rape victims generally don’t go out and bang more guys right after the alleged rape.

by Midnight Rambler on Oct 24, 2010 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not a rape counselor...

… but even if you’re right about here, it’s still possible for a crazy chick to get raped. It might even be more likely. But it’s easier for people to rationalize buying a Kobe jersey if they just assume the woman was nuts, so that’s the assumption they make.

I’ll also point out that, per the judge’s court order, you shouldn’t even be aware of whether the “victim” hooked up with anyone after the fact. Rape shield laws in virtually every state bar that kind of evidence, so ask yourself: how did it become public knowledge, regardless of whether it’s true? Who would want you to know/believe that? Certainly not the victim. The fact that aspects of her sexual history became public knowledge shortly before she refused to testify and the case was dismissed is pretty revealing, but not in the way you assume. It’s a very old playbook Kobe and his lawyers were using; watch Dial M for Murder and you’ll see what I mean. Sexual Assault allegation? The victim’s a slut, or crazy, or preferably both, and once people think that MIGHT be true, then the accused can’t be guilty, can they?

Sad, really, that none of know what really happened yet so many assume that they do based on the propaganda campaign orchestrated by a millionaire against a working class hotel employee.

Dude this is sad

I have been around women that have been raped and there was no way in world they would have sex with three other guys in the same night. They found three samples of sperm in her underwear. non of which was kobe’s.

This whole thing could have been over by now.

Favre didn’tget accused of raping anyone, or kill dogs. He allegedly sent text messages. Goodell should have just fined Favre $100k or whatever meaningless amount he wanted. Could have done it in conjunction with all the fines for all the big hits and league changes. It would have been a 3 day story and it would have been over. Now its going to get drawn out and we’re going to get silly posts like this every 3 days.

What is this "white community" you speak of?

Is it some sort of gated community where all white people think and act the same way as a monolithic entity?

by Midnight Rambler on Oct 24, 2010 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

It's always a black thing

To avoid sounding like one of those white hooded anti color Pro American types, I will be light in my opinion.
The only reason why color typically comes into play in these situations is because someone brings it up!
In Favres case for example, he has been in the league for over 20 years. In that time, correct me if I am wrong. There has not been any case against him. Don’t you think it’s the NFL’s responsibility to give him the benefit of the doubt? Given, the photos, voicemails, and whole basis of the story is 100% 3rd party. Sterger

by PURPLEPUSSYEATER on Oct 22, 2010 10:14 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Oops........ Read on my bad

Sterger, herself at this point.( I say this point because she has now hired Hi $$$$ attorneys to feel out just how much $$$$$$$$$!!!!! this thing can bring in) has not been willing yo make any sort of statement to confirm or deny the allegations.
Bottom line- all we have at this point is a 3rd party web site that posted some audio and visual claiming to be Brett and we have no idea if it’s real. How can in America where we are innocent until proven guilty, and the league where they have NO solid or corfirmed evidence against him. Find him at any wrong doing ….. For now!
I really hate it when people bring up the black card!!! It is so Al sharpton and Jessie Jackson of the 1980’s….. Fuckin move on!

And to think ? I thought it all came about because he is wearing Purple .

Or maybe they would like to bring back the Racey article on the last 50 arrests in the NFL . Only three white guys on the list . One being the DET coach that exposed himself . A gambling debt and a boat DWI rounded out the field . Hispanic at about 3-5 . And the other color had the rest . From traffic sitations to Homicide .
Since when does a white woman with a white agent and a white lawyer . Trying to jump start a career at the expense of a white southern woman with two white children and a numscal white husband with big bucks have to do with race . Hell even the white run NFL is ducking and weaving liability with it’s pretend white like investigation ?

The author conveniently did not mention.......

Ray Lewis. Last I looked, he was a free man. O. J., while, yes doing time for an audiotaped armed robbery, did, indeed, elude justice in a double homicide. Just another lame attempt to beat the dead horse known as “white man’s guilt.” Enough already.

by Mel Allen on Oct 23, 2010 1:29 AM CDT reply actions

The only reason OJ got off the 1st time is because

It was one of the few times that a black defendant had diverse jury. Most of time when a black person is accused of killing or harming a white person they go to jail. Look at the history in this country. how many countless numbers of black males were killed just for looking at a white women. OJ will never happen again it was fluke the 1st time.

by chuckd@79 on Oct 24, 2010 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

What Is Your Point?

The evidence clearly showed that OJ killed two people, and a “diverse” jury let him off because he was black, showing that racism is by no means limited to some white people.

by Midnight Rambler on Oct 24, 2010 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

The evidence was not as good as you claim

People of color have had police do some dirty things to them that the average white person never has done to them. OJ lawyers used this and the fact that the lead detective had an Axe to grind. It has been shown throughout US history that the white women is supposed to off limits. so when the detective sees this beautiful white women dead and he knows that she was married to BIG black guy all logic went out the window. The automatic response is to try and convict him. They have done studies to show that white people are more prone to this type of reaction. ABC did a special on this check out the link

http://mediatakeout.com/43799/shame_hidden_camera_shows_the_different_reactions_of_white_folk___when_they_see_a_black_and_a_white_thief.html

by chuckd@79 on Oct 24, 2010 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions

A diverse jury?

The law states you are to have a jury of your peers, not some politically correct notion of “diversity” entering into it. A jury of his peers would have been one seated in the jurisdiction in which he took up residence, Brentwood. One’s “peers” are not defined by the color of their skin, but rather by age, socio-economic background, etc. The trial was “mistakenly”, ahem, transferred to the Los Angeles county court system, where his “peers” were plentiful. Have there been miscarriages of justice in our history. Of course, Sacco and Vanzetti comes to mind (look it up.)
However, the evidence was beyond doubt in this case. The police, as I know, did not have access to the interior of OJs car to plant drops of blood which contained HIS blood and both victims. They would have to have drawn blood from him first in order to plant it. Unnerstand? There are countless other pieces of evidence, Bruno Magli shoes, blood drops in the entranceway to his house, and on and on. A travesty of justice occurred, and it stands alone on this basis.

How is it that Favre is getting a pass?

He’s being asked about it every day, there’s an NFL investigation, even the Favre apologists I know (i.e., everyone except me) are disgusted by the allegations, and the video of him getting hit in the junk was all over the internet and T? So what horrible thing should have happened by now that hasn’t? I think the guy’s a dirt-bag but even I can’t call what’s happening to him as “getting a pass”.

Five athletes accused of four crimes and adultery.

Three of the crimes were felonies (Vick, Ben, and Kobe) and Favre’s is a misdemeanor I believe. Not sure if adultery is a crime or not so I’ll leave Tiger out of this. What I’d say is that everybody on this list got a lot of media attention for their actions and regardless of race they all lost endorsements and their reputation. The other thing worth mentioning is that only one athlete was convicted of a crime. If you include other notable athletes like Ray Lewis, Leonard Little, and Donte Stallworth the only pattern that emerges is that most athletes don’t get convicted of crimes they’re accused of.

I don’t think there’s a race issue in play but rather an issue of money. The fact is if you have millions of dollars you can pay to make many crimes go away. Stallworth did this, Roethlisberger is suspected of doing this, and Sterger has made it clear that she’ll go away if Favre pays up. From what I’ve seen of crimes concerning famous people and athletes the only color that comes into play is green : )

Epic Fail

The accusations-without-proof against Favre are bad enough without adding race-baiting to the circus. The author’s prejudice is on parade, the article is disgusting, and Bleacher Report loses credibility by promoting the bigotry by allowing the article on the site. There’s no winners there, only losers.

Ah, ah,

Maybe.

I wouldn’t be surprised. The Vikings played better late in the Cowboy game than either team has played at any point earlier in the year. I think they’ve found something that GB has yet to find. GB is healthier than they were last week, but they’re still missing 5 of their preferred starters. I still think they can be pretty good, but they were struggling when healthy and it’s hard to find your rhythm when you’re constantly losing guys.

Sick of the racism nonsense!!!

I am so SICK of the race card! It seems to be the “goto” move. It’s always about race in some way or fashion. That move is getting so worn out. I take people at face value. I deal with them on who they are and what they do. No matter who you are it all boils down to the same thing. Consequences. Accountability. Don’t do the crime, if you can’t do the time. Last time I checked this is not site for legal issues, social issues, or political issues. This site is all about VIKING issues. God give us the wisdom of JETHROPROPHET!!!
