Vikings At Packers, Fourth Quarter Thread

The third quarter started out pretty ugly for the Vikings, but they're still within a score of taking the lead back.

The Packers scored after a Brett Favre interception gave them great field position at the Minnesota 40 on a 14-yard pass to Greg Jennings to take the lead. Then, on Favre's next pass, linebacker Desmond Bishop grabbed an interception and took it 32 yards for a score and a 28-17 Packer advantage.

The Vikings did answer back, though, on a drive that concluded with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Randy Moss, and that gives us the score we have now at 28-24.

It's the fourth quarter, folks. . .if you've been here this whole time, don't bail out now!

by eltwentyone on Oct 24, 2010 10:37 PM CDT reply actions

Playcalling was horrible at first

I was almost ready to turn off the game at that point. The defense, I thought, did pretty good. Rodgers doesn’t typically throw picks, and we got 2. We bent, but we didn’t break. If Favre didn’t throw 3 ints, the D would have done enough to secure us the victory.

Again, this game came to turn overs, just like our other losses have. And the culprit is Favre.

Can someone explain the actual ruling on the Shiancoe overruling?

I was almost positive that you don’t need to have the hands under the ball in order for it to be a catch. The ground did NOT help him catch the pass. He clearly had full possession of the ball the entire way, so why was it over turned? Am I completely off on my understanding of the rule?

by Bboc6830 on Oct 24, 2010 10:41 PM CDT reply actions

i dont know anymoreee

they should just change the rule to common sense….if a td looks like a td then it is a td.

by eltwentyone on Oct 24, 2010 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought the rule was changed for exactly the same type of catch made.....

during the Rams Titans Super Bowl. I do not recall the specifics, but, I think it was a third down pass for a first that was overturned.

by Mel Allen on Oct 24, 2010 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions

The ref ruled that he used the ground to help him maintain possession of the pass

Basically, they said he trapped it. The rule is that the ball can touch the ground, as long as it has already been secured. The call on the field was that he was only able to secure the pass, because he trapped it first. Not saying it was a good call at all, because it wasnt. Just trying to explain the rule and the call

by Dylan87 on Oct 24, 2010 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions

In my years of watching the NFL

I’ve rarely seen them NOT call it incomplete (despite the newer rule) once they see part of it has hit the ground. It’s retarded and makes you ask what the point is of having the newer ruling if they’re just going to call that pass incomplete. Awful home-town call. Trite as it may be, the Refs were simply awful tonight. Totally home-town.

by Wytefang on Oct 24, 2010 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Collinsworth

That’s the way that he interpreted the call coming from the refs. Take that field goal and give us the TD and we win the game AGAIN at the wire, 31-28

The true root of the problem!

Brad Childress and Brett Favre are this teams problem. We would have just as many wins, if not more, with Jackson and my son’s Pop Warner coach. These two have made our team less than mediocre. This is coming from a life long Vikings fan. I am so disappointed.

Sadly it's not really Favre

though he shares some minute blame. It’s not even so much Chilly, either, though he’s looked particularly clueless as of late. It’s simply the O-line and D-lines. They’re inconsistent at best and the D-line is actually downright so-so this year (if that). \:(

Just looked it up,

and yes, Matthews should have been penalized 15 yards. It’s unfathomable to me that the Packers only committed 20 yards of penalties tonight.

I have a feeling there will be some messages from the league this week that Shank’s TD was supposed to be a TD and there was supposed to be a penalty.

There was a reason he took his helmet off…Harvin had both his hands to his helmet when he chipped on him off the line of scrimmage. After that his helmet was halfway up his head. Illegal hands to the helmet could have just as easily been called.

Not very likely, especially after seeing tonight’s woeful performance (woeful in some key areas, anyway). In Foxboro, too. LOL Yeah, I’m not crossing my fingers on that one. THIS was the game we needed to and should’ve won, imho.

It’s (admittedly) still not a devastating loss to our hopes for the season but we’re starting to creep backwards again and really can’t afford much more mediocrity, especially against teams we should be beating, like the over-rated Packers. \:( Though it IS hard to play against Refs who appear to have been paid off by how badly the calls went tonight. What a joke.

by Wytefang on Oct 24, 2010 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Schedule

We have, by far, had the most difficult schedule of all teams in the NFC North so far. Once next week is over at New England, we should have some games that we should roll through. I can still see this team getting on a roll, but I’m not sure it will be enough anymore after tonight’s loss. Thoughts everyone?

Also, blackjack, are you thinking about the play that Matthews threw his helmet off at the end of the game during a play? Because if so, then yes, he should have been penalized. I was thinking the same thing.

Yes, this is exactly what I’ve been saying since spring. I expected a loss tonight to be most likely back then, and to be maybe two games back (I was thinking only of Packers here, wasn’t factoring in Bears).

The problem with my math back then is that I figured, after us beating Pack at home, we mignt not be able to make up more than one other game, so we’d end up with a tie & final standing would go down to tiebreakers. But … that’s getting way ahead of things here. First things first, start digging out of the hole, and get the series split.

Nice Draft

Should have taken Clausen. Instead we have a corner who can’t stop anyone or stay healthy. Toby looks good though. We needed a quarterback and to buy a secondary.

by Scooter34 on Oct 24, 2010 10:51 PM CDT reply actions

Have you seen Clausen?

I feel much better about Webb. and Cook was looking great earlier in the year/pre-season, but he was also put up against Greg Jennings, who makes other veteran DBs look foolish too.

What? have you seen clausen play?

he got benched in favor for the guy that got benched for him.

"Can play"

must be subjective.

I don’t call a 60 passer rating with 3 fumbles and a INT, with a total of 6 points, playing.

by loldotcom on Oct 24, 2010 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions

that was

bs. I know it’s not right to blame the refs and all but cmon you have to flag matthews for taking off his helmet OR give us the moss catch near the end of the first half OR keep the shiancoe td

Quarless TD

See, this play, early on in the game, is getting overlooked. It was 3rd down and when he came down with the ball, his right foot hit in, left foot never made it in. His back and ass hit at the same time, with ass landing in and back landing on the white. How was this a touchdown? Oh, and we should have challenged because he, too, never maintained control of the ball when he was out of bounds. But how was it ruled a touchdown in the first place?

by Bboc6830 on Oct 24, 2010 10:56 PM CDT reply actions

Ass counts. I’ve learned to never question completion or incompletions because the NFL’s rules don’t really make sense.

It was ass/back at the same time.

Not sure how that works, but he did juggle it on the way down, and didn’t have control until being out of bounds.

Where’s Childress’s challenge happy flag at?

No, you can also ask that he plays reasonably well and doesn't kill you with 3 INTs

He’s a Professional Football Player being paid $20 million. Not some pee wee kid, where we can say “great effort Brett, everyone’s a winner!”

by Ace991 on Oct 24, 2010 11:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Before you gripe too hard at Favre

you might want to spend more time harping on our inconsistent (at best) Offensive Line. There’d be a hell of a lot more Incompletes and Ints with a different QB as long as our mediocre Offensive Line is playing so lamely. \:( Pathetic.

by Wytefang on Oct 24, 2010 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Have you ever noticed that we let real coaches, Super Bowl winning coaches, get away. Billick, Dungy and Tomlin. Our management makes good decisions. Afterall, they hired Childress.

Everyone is right. I am sure that Cook will end up being a much better NFL player than Clausen. Probably even better than Jhavid Best. Yeah, we let that one go to.

Almost making it to the Super Bowl last year and almost winning three other games this year is exactly what the fans want. After all, I keep rooting them on. Keep thinking it will get better. Trust me, I speak from experience with this team, we are in for a long season!

by Scooter34 on Oct 24, 2010 11:03 PM CDT reply actions

I suppose you're 100% correct.

We definitely needed a much worse AP and a QB who can’t get out of his own way.

by Vikant on Oct 24, 2010 11:04 PM CDT reply actions

Well Brett killed the Vikings with 3 INTs, bad sacks, etc.

I thought you were fan of the Vikings TEAM, not just a Brett Favre in Purple fan.

Look at the weapons he has around him: Peterson, Harvin, Moss, Shiancoe. The QB is just not getting it done, period.

At the same time, Chilldress is a shitty coach too. Fact. No challenge on the Quarless TD, no aggressiveness at the end of the 1st half, not going for 2. Terrible.

But you did observe a sad truth. Now the blame game is happening. Chilly will blame Favre, Favre will blame Chilly and the O-Line, Moss will just quit, the D will start blaming the O (with good reason).

This game broke our back.

just interested in hearing what he had to say. it will be interesting to see how this affects the team from this day forward

by Bboc6830 on Oct 24, 2010 11:08 PM CDT reply actions

I hate to say it but I agree.

There is too much drama and frustration on this team now. We had great chance to win ALL of the 4 games we lost. Last year was great (except the end). And now we’re paying the price for bringing in Favre’s EGO.

This team is a powder keg that just got lit.

BOOM goes the season.

by Ace991 on Oct 24, 2010 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions

You must of missed the part where he refused to even acknowledge the trainers.

TJack was right there, and then went away as he realized he wasn’t going in.

by loldotcom on Oct 24, 2010 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

No, you missed the point where I said AFTER the game.

Favre gave it all he had DURING the game. He wanted to win, no doubt. But once they lost, he looked as if he finally knew for sure that the party was over.

As hard as it will be physically to come back from this, mentally I think Favre will just not have his heart into it after this.

by Ace991 on Oct 24, 2010 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Honestly, at this point,

I think ol’ Sage would of been a better QB to have rolled with.

Favre so far has looked basically average. He didn’t really make any “oh wow” plays in this game, besides the toss to Harvin which would of been in bounds had he not been hit before catching the ball.

He hasn’t really made that many “oh wow” plays during the whole season as a whole.

Look at random average QBs like Josh Freeman, or Vince Young. They’re making 30-60 yard tosses every once in awhile, and still making other smart reads elsewhere. At this point, with our under 7 point losses, just playing average, and not giving the ball up 3+ times a game, would put us at maybe 4 wins or more.

by loldotcom on Oct 24, 2010 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Do you think Jackson would make the same smart reads as Freeman or Young? Didn’t they give him a chance to do that?

No, that wasn't him looking like he wanted to retire

That was him looking like playing at Lambeau really mant a lot to him.

At the same time, you had a lot of fans looking like him playing at Lambeau has never, ever meant anything to them. What a classy farewell. Whatever they think he did to treat them badly in the last thrity months … well, it’s definiteley all a wash now!

by puddnhead on Oct 24, 2010 11:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I could care less about Favre and Chilly

I just feel bad for the young stud talents on the team like Peterson and Harvin. This season will waste a year in the prime of two of the greatest offensive players in NFL history.

What a shame.

Enough of the bullshit Chilly. Either have the balls to pull him then and there, or don’t try to brag about “thinking about it after”. And DO NOT freaking whine to the media about it. What a pussy.

by Ace991 on Oct 24, 2010 11:32 PM CDT reply actions

With such a close game though,

who can really justify throwing in TJack? The guy looked god awful in pre-season, and has no real sense of QB knowledge.

If Cutler can stay in a game after 4 INTs, I think Favre is safe.

by loldotcom on Oct 24, 2010 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions

yes childress is horrible just horrible

Seriously i love the vikes (SKOL!!) but this is adding up….every game in game decisions are just soooo bad! No red flag on the back of the end zone td, what?? NOT GOING for 2 in the 2nd half down 5, WHAT?!! letting the clock run out in the 1st half, WHAT?

12 MEN IN THE HUDDLE WHAT THE FREAK?!! Having to call a timeout the other day when he wasnt sure whether to go for 2 in a similiar postion againt the jets, WHAT WHAT WHAT?

Seriously how can anyone defend thsi DOUCH BAG?! He is the WORST coach in the league and he is coaching my beloved VIKES!!
