i think it will def w. a close game

All of the Vikings loses were really close and all of the Patriots wins have been really close. So i expect another nail biter…it could go either way.

I think this is a game that could go two ways

1) The Patriots come back to Gillete physically exhausted from 2 extreme difficult wins (one being 3000 miles away), and Adrian Peterson takes that to his advantage and runs his Nike cleats all over Wilfork and the Run D (kind of like Ray Rice did in the playoff game last year).

2) The Vikings come to town ready to prove themselves, but it falls just short, since the Patriots are pretty much unbeatable at home, and have 3 straight home wins this year.

Or it could be a little of both.

I don't think so. Homey don't play dat.

Hopefully, Jared Allen doesn’t wake up before the game Sunday. That guy can be a beast. My wife thinks he just forgot his Wheaties.

Our pass game has been ugly as well at times, and we seem to no longer have that deep threat guy in Randy Moss. Where the heck did that guy go anyway?

I still don’t know if Woody is for real, but he keeps doing his thing and I’m becoming a believer. With Welker, Woodhead, and Edelman, it shall be “Death By Smurfs!”, or so we hope.

Points

Watched some of your game yesterday, I agree, it is going to be close. I think you guy’s are still in some kind of offensive transition of some sorts. Not clicking on all fronts. We never know what to expect, at least this year. Lack of effort and creative coaching has killed us. Should be entertaining anyway.

by NCviking on Oct 25, 2010 2:37 PM CDT reply actions

Exactly

When you’ve got a rookie TE with the most receiving TDs and a rookie WR/TE with the most receiving yards on the team, it’s easy to forget that they’re still actually rookies. It’s only readily apparent when they mess up – like Hernandez having two drops in overtime two weeks ago. They’re still learning their trade, despite good production in the meantime.

Branch was a Seahawk until a little while ago, Woodhead was a Jet, and Tate’s only 7 games into his career. It’s definitely growing pains, but what they have done thus far suggests they’ll improve.

by BranFavrenton on Oct 25, 2010 3:53 PM CDT reply actions

I think once news came about that first evening

people were a bit shocked. It was sort of like being in a good sleep (after a huge divisional win in Miami, first road win in a while), and then, just when you’re about to get into the really juicy part of your dream…suddenly someone punches you right in the face, and you wake up and your nose is bleeding.

As news came about of how Moss was “yelling at coaches”, and after his 15 minute monologue after Week 1, the thought around fans was his writing was on the wall. That quickly though? That wasn’t expected.

2 weeks after the trade, I’d say there are still a few folks who feel that Moss’s sole presence on the field would pay dividends for the other weapons Brady has to choose from (Woodhead, Welker, Branch, Hernandez, Gronkowski, Tate), and you could say after last week’s game, they were a bit justified. But it was becoming evident that the issues Moss had with his contract would bowl over to the younger guys in the locker room. With the transition the offense is going through, the staff didn’t want to take the chance of keeping him there.

For the most part…I think Pats fans are OK with it. Moss has technically not really been a part of the Pats’s principal plans for 3 games (the Dolphins game he had 0 catches), and they have won all 3 games.

I don't think so. Homey don't play dat.

by AtomicDawg on Oct 25, 2010 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Excellent summary.

We haven’t established a deep threat yet without him, but at the same time, he hadn’t been that effective a deep threat for us this year anyway. The division had adapted to life with Moss, and Randy wasn’t as dominant as he was in his youth.

He'd become the world's most expensive decoy

He drew double-coverage and all that, but in 2007 he was able to do that and still make catches. In 2010, he was getting double-covered and as likely to get a TD (3) as a drop in the End Zone (2) or surrender an interception (2). It wasn’t quite the same Brady-Moss connection – and as an observer, you had to wonder whether teams would at some point just stop treating him like Randy Moss circa-2007.

Imagine that you're a hand with dry skin...

…and you’re trying to pick up a piece of paper. It cuts you. You pick it up again. It cuts you again. It keeps cutting you until you give up and do something else.

That’s the Patriots offense. Tom Brady will throw passes the following way:

Wes Welker – Slants/Screens within 5 yards of the Line of Scrimmage.
Brandon Tate – Out/Hitch/In 10 yards from the LoS
Deion Branch – Hitch/In/Out 15 yards from the LoS
Aaron Hernandez – Screen 5 yards from the LoS, Hitch 15 yards from the LoS
Rob Gronkowski – Dump 3 yards from LoS, Fade in the End Zone
Danny Woodhead – Dump 3 yards from LoS

The main purpose of the offense is to maximize yards after catch (which is the opposite of our defense which focuses on eliminating yards after the catch). They’ll throw to receivers who have space with a blocker or two in front of them in order to pick up 5+ yards after the receptions.

Gronkowski 15-20 in the seam

Branch middle-deep crossing in front of the Safeties
Herndo late release from the wing-back position to an intermediate sideline route

Some commentary has indicated that the Patriots are re-tooling their offense

to more effectively address the strengths of the other teams in their division. Do you guys think that is a valid observation? If so, how have this year’s personnel moves reflected that strategy. I am not a close watcher of the Pats, but to me they have simply continued their pattern of acquiring as many draft picks as possible and taking the best players available with their picks. Even the free-agent pickups, like Woodhead, don’t seem particularly different from the type of players you traditionally had on the roster.

by Jshore on Oct 26, 2010 10:12 AM CDT reply actions

That may be partially true, but Belichick constantly changes both the offense and the defense over time anyway.

When the O-line was a strength, he grabbed Randy Moss, a field stretcher, and went vertical.
As the O-line has declined, he switched to multiple TE formations, and more short patterns.

When the D-line was dominant, he got more pressure with pass rush.
As the D-line has dropped off, he’s added speed in the secondary.

In the mind of Belichick, there is a goal that he’s trying to accomplish. The reality is, though, that your team likely won’t meet that standard. He emphasizes the strengths of the players he has, and chooses formations that cover their weaknesses.

Likewise, he will try to take away your strengths (Peterson, and Harvin come to mind), and make you beat him with your 3rd and 4th options (which Favre can do).

The game plan last week won’t look anything like the game plan this week. One game may feature WRs, others TEs or RBs, etc.

Most times they run a 3-4. Other times they switch to 4-3 (sometimes for whole games). Sometimes they run the Joker front.

I think it's more pairing up the offence with the usual Belichick D

From 2007-early 2010, they had an offence that was a threat to score in one or two passes, basically due to Randy Moss. That’s fine, but it means that unless your D can get off the field one way or another (ie – turnover or giving up a quick TD), they’ll be on the field a long time. In other words, a high-scoring offence works well when you’ve got a risk-taking D.

However, the Pats had a pretty consistent defence – bend-but-don’t-break, allow underneath chain-moving passes and then tighten up in the Red Zone. That’s the wrong type of D to pair with a quick-scoring O, because it means your D is on the field the entire day.

Now they’ve gone back to their old dink-and-dunk game, which can churn out loooooooong drives (they had an 8 minute scoring drive last week against a good Chargers D), and that’s a great balance with a bend-but-don’t-break D. They can control clock on both O and D by playing conservatively if they wish, and with Brady at QB and some real speedsters on O, they can score quickly if necessary.

It has been 2 years since we have seen a meaningful snap to Tjack...

1. His accuracy is better on the run. He is a roll-out QB and does really well in space. He can also break it out and gain good yardage on the ground. He is a little short, so he has difficulty seeing over the line at times. Nothing that Favre didn’t have to deal with though as they are the same height.

2. His decision making is where I see the most improvement. He seemed to throw the ball away more in his second year as a starter, and he did really well against some mediocre pass defenses. I can only imagine that 1 1/2 years under Favre has helped him learn what to do and more importantly; what not to do.

3. He is not your prototypical pocket-passer, but he does feel the pocket fairly well and will step up to give himself some time. But as mentioned before, he used to get flustered by the blitz and is likely to break containment if he sees a guy coming. I am hoping that is something he has learned a lot about as well.

Make no mistake, he is not an amazing QB. Imagine Michael Vick (pre-incarceration) with a little better accuracy and not quite as fast on his feet and you pretty much know what to expect.

Seems like he could be a poor-man's Big Ben, given time.

He’s got a decent cannon if I recall correctly.

We have trouble getting off the field on 3rd down (worst in the league, actually). If that’s true vs Tavaris, it’ll be because he runs a bunch, methinks.

1. If the reciever is open, he’ll hit him! Unlike Favre who throws it about a mile above their heads.
2. The only reason he was bad was cuz of his decision making, and being under Favre has gotta help…oddly enough.
3. Cant get much worse than “hold the ball for 8 seconds” favre

I'm actually more scared of T-Jack than Favre.

This may be the only game he’d be able to perform this year, and he’ll make the most out of it.

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

That aside it looks like Favre will play. Peter King sites a physician who has seen the scans and indicates the coaching staff/doctors are being a bit more dramatic then necessary.

Favre will start - regardless - even if it is just a snap. Gotta keep the streak alive.

Any chance they split snaps ala McNabb/Vick last year?

Personally I feel good about this game I think our offense is starting to click more and more. If we can get Favre on enough medication where he can feel no more pain I think we have a good shot of using AD and Harvin to pull your secondary up and hit Moss for something deep. The second thing I see about this game is that teh Vikes D is set up like your’s to take away the YAC. We do worse with people who are going to throw th eball deep against us as our linbackers and Corners are invarilably better than our safeties. But everyone in that back field can lay a lick. You have a lot of weapons out there and I think Brady will be playing better than Brett, but I don’t think it’s enough to deny us the win we need very badly.

Good luck to you all and I hope for a good, fun injury free game.

Wow

I wasn’t expecting the Vikes fanbase to turn on Favre so easily

The way i look at it is like this: If Favre plays the whole game, and plays decent, then hes a warrior for playing through pain, if he plays a couple series and his ankle acts up, then i tip my hat to you guys, you were right about Favre.
I think some people here are in panic mode. The game vs the Packers was Favres first truly aweful game of the year, until then i had placed 90% of the blame on the Oline and blitz pickup.
If we can protect Favre and give him a chance to step into his throws, we will see a Brett Favre much closer to 2009 or 2007 Favre than 2010 Favre. The arm is still there, just protect him.

by stallone on Oct 30, 2010 5:05 PM CDT reply actions

I suspect it's a recognition that in the last few years...

if/when Favre’s season goes bad, it goes really bad. He’d be riding a 110 passer rating, 70% completion rate and 2:1 TD-Int ratio until some indeterminate point of the season, and then start throwing 4 Int games willy-nilly.

Did it with the Packers (last throw was a pick), Jets (last throw was a pick), last season (last throw was a pick), etc.

He hasn't been able to do that the last few years

He’ll start off the season pretty well, he’ll rack up an injury of three, and he’ll play awfully for the rest of the season. It’s not necessarily his fault – it’s what you’d expect of any 40-something year old man – but it means he’s unlikely to come back from it this season. And considering this is likely his last season, that’s it.

Oh no, I know what it was

According to NFL Game Center:

New York Jets at 00:17
1-10-NYJ 1
(:17) (Shotgun) 4-B.Favre pass short left to 29-L.Washington to NYJ 5 for 4 yards. Lateral to 4-B.Favre to NYJ 7 for 2 yards. 4-B.Favre pass incomplete short right to 89-J.Cotchery. PENALTY on NYJ-4-B.Favre, Illegal Forward Pass, 3 yards, enforced at NYJ 7.

The second illegal forward pass on the second attempt scrubs the play, thus Brett Favre’s last actual attempted pass play was:
1-10-MIA 29
(4:59) (No Huddle) 4-B.Favre pass short left intended for 83-C.Stuckey INTERCEPTED by 21-A.Goodman at MIA 25. 21-A.Goodman to MIA 28 for 3 yards (87-L.Coles).

@ He is so smart.@

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

These players, a lot of other people didn't believe in them, but they believe in themselves. And that is all that matters."- Bill Belichick

I'm also a Raider Fan dammit!!! RAIDER NATION!!!!

Thanks for the interaction, people...

Good game, hope Favre isn’t too hurt (I think?). Good luck for the rest of the season.

Token southern hemisphere guy - 14,688km from Foxboro. That's 9128 miles, for you heathens.

Thanks, you Pats fans were fun to talk to as well.

Good luck to your team for the rest of the season. Your team looks pretty solid and I’d rather the Pats win the AFC east than the Jets. Love to say we’ll see you again this season but we got a big, big hole to dig ourselves out of.

Tough, but not impossible.

If you see Childress along the side of the road, swerve a little and you’ve taken the first step toward the playoffs.

Good luck, and I hope the Childress problem is solved soon.

My life has been a trivial pursuit. Trivia: where three roads meet.
