Around SBN: FSU To Big 12 'Inevitable,' According To Report

ESPN finally says Something I Agree with?... Thats the 4th Sign of the Apocalypse!

So, I got home from School today and was scrolling through the Channels when I Saw NFL Live was on.

I was so shocked with what I heard, I almost had a Heart Attack.. (Okay Over Exaggeration, but still)

Star-divide

Tedy Bruschi said  something that needed to be said about the Vikings this Year.

"You (Mark Schlereth) and I have both Played for Championship Coaches, and I think Right Now, the Minnesota Vikings are not a Super Bowl Contending team... And Brad Childress Is The Reason Why. Above All Else, a Head Coach should be keeping his Team together on the Same Course, but all Brad Childress is [doing is] making excuses for his Failures. "Its the Official's (Which is a legit, but uncontrollable excuse) Fault, Its my Quarterback's play, he should be Looking Left, not Right."

This is something we've been saying for a long Time. Childress is a Shitty Coach. His extension was not earned through play calling, it was earned because Brett Favre carried the Team Last Year. Brett is why we made it as far as we did. Now, sure, he's partly the reason why were losing, but as a Head Coach, its your JOB to change your gameplan based upon the performance of your players. If the running game is sucking Righteous Ass, You Throw More, You switch Backs, whatever. Passing Game? Run! MORE!  Play Action Passes, Reverses, Screens.. (Adrian Peterson is the best Back in the NFL, USE HIM.)

Brett clearly doesn't have the same Magic that he did last year. Adrian has the same magic he had as A Rookie. (except he has yet to (officially, mind you) Fumble Once)

Why has that statistic alone not gotten through Col. Klink's Head? It's time to make a change. While it pains me to say this, Sit Brett this Week, Let his Elbow and Ankle Heal, Start T-Joke Tarvaris Jackson, and Run with Adrian and Percy. Throw ALOT to Randy! He has caught, through 3 games this year with the Vikings: 12 receptions for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns compared to 9 for 139 with 3 tds. Those are pretty damn good stats considering he doesnt/didnt know anything about our playbook. Not to mention the effect hes had on Percy Harvin. Percy looks better right now, than he did when Sidney was healthy last year.

Give Brett a week, maybe 2 to rest, get Healthy and Let T-Jax show us if he can be the QB after this year..

Even if we win the Super Bowl, I hope Brad Gets Fired. His inept play calling and un-creativeness when it comes to the playbook is grounds enough for a firing, not to mention the 100+ times hes had clock management issues and stubbornly runs to the right. (You have the best rush blocking guard in the NFL on the left side of the line in Steve Hutchinson... RUSH BEHIND HIM maybe? more than 5 or six times?)

Its time to embrace the man who is the reason the Vikings have been able to be competitive in every single game, even with the offensive struggles. Lezlie Fraiser!

what are u smoking, childerress took us from the dumps

do you realize how bad we were without childeress? we improved each year with him, he drafted Peterson, Harvin, Sidney Rice, etc. He has made some mistakes but he took this team from the dumps to a legit team. BEVELL IS THE OF COORDINATER, i think he calls the plays haha iam not sure who calls the offensive plays, he brought in tomlin, frazier, and our entire staff. the staff could be head coahces anywhere else, and jump started tomlin career. Childeress is a solid coache, he has made some goofs but he still a solid coach. You do realize Brett Favre has had problems with management where ever he goes. give childeress a break

by eltwentyone on Oct 27, 2010 9:44 PM CDT reply actions

Childress definitely has done a PHENOMENAL job of finding and bringing talent to this team. Granted, his draft of TJack was a bit questionable- but I still say TJack was underdeveloped, and pushed to start way too soon to let him really be ready. But then again, I feel that Childress is a horrible coach for a QB to work with, and he can’t develop any worth a damn, so this in turn is a fallback on him.

I would absolutely love nothing more than to see Childress retain a job with the Vikings in the FO, in some capacity. At least to maintain that very high level of drafting and acquiring talent that he has shown. But as far as a head coach, and really as a leader for his team (as to some extent a head coach MUST be, ala the Patriots- Tom Brady might be quite the leader, but everyone knows and respects the fact that at the end of the day, ol’ Billy’s the unquestioned boss of it all), I find his skills very questionable, and worse, questionable on a CONSISTENT basis. I don’t see any real evolution in him as a coach season-to-season.

The fact that we’ve improved under him as a head coach every single season (well, up till this one, sadly… even at some miracle best we can only tie last season, and the realists here know that ain’t happening) is to me more of a reflection of his ability to constantly pump this team with talent. Every year he’s added more and more and more, and it’s given us more and more and more wins. Our defense AND our offense has surged under him, to me, because of this single fact- not because he himself leads it, but because he BUILT it.

Let’s see, as unlikely as it is, rather than outright firing the guy, if we can’t keep him in some capacity so that he can continue this trend… but then, too, somehow replace him as the Head Coach. I really like Frazier for the job- a.) we won’t lose him, as becomes increasingly likely with every offseason, and b.) I just outright think he’d do well with the job, assuming he gets a better Offensive Coordinator.

Bevell is a yes man to chilly. As long as chillys here, bevells job is safe. No way in hell does chilly bring in a different o.c. He is to high on himself as an offensive mind to give up those duties completely to a “better” offensive mind.

I agree with you CV

"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

I think the Wilfs and Spielman are more significant in our development than Childress. As I’ve said elsewhere, I do believe he will be a great GM for a different team, but he is far too conservative a play caller, and seems to aggravate veterans too much to be a HC.

by ViolentSilence on Oct 28, 2010 9:18 AM CDT up reply actions

+1

your spot on about being conservative. I gave him a pass the first couple of years because of personnel, but now he has more offensive weapons than any other team and doesn’t use them properly. He is too smug, arrogant, & stubborn to open up the playbook.

by PurpleCrush on Oct 28, 2010 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

I also don't see him as much of a leader

I understand he thinks of himself as a logical person but as a head coach you need to lead the team to victory. The last real ‘leader’ this team had as a coach was Bud Grant in my humble opinion.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

Name all the big mistakes that hes donne as a head coach

I know the V-shank touchdown and hes known as the vanilla offense but thats when we had t-jack as our qb and no wide recievers, hes getting way too much flak.

by eltwentyone on Oct 27, 2010 9:54 PM CDT reply actions

not to mention free agent pickups

he picked up visante shiancoe and jared allen through trades and free agent pickups.

by eltwentyone on Oct 27, 2010 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Brad Childress is the head coach...

NOT the VP of player personnel which is Rick Spielman. Sure, Chilly has some say. But the guy who does all the scouting and leg work is the personnel guys.

Besides, just because he traded for a guy that everyone knew was a beast does not make him a good head coach. Picking up Favre does not make him a good coach, neither does drafting Percy, Adrian, Sidney, Cedric or any other recent draft pick because Chilly is not in control of that aspect.

we don’t know who has final say.

by PurpleCrush on Oct 28, 2010 8:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Final... Maybe.

But again, does knowing something that everybody else knows make you a good head coach?

Cause everybody and their mother knew that Jared Allen was a stud DE.

by Bjorno on Oct 28, 2010 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions

His play calling can be predictable

Heck one game I was nailing the plays left and right my buddy at the bar was just looking at me like I had grown a second head.

Second his time management is attrocious.

Third his leadership abilities seem to be severely lacking. Blaming players is a no no. This is pretty much common sense, even as a manager I know better than to blame my personell in public. It makes everyone look bad including yourself. You talk to them in person, you fix the problem or you fire them. That’s how it should be done.

He needs to tighten up the team. AD not coming to camp for AD day? Favre debacle. Other than the defense it didn’t seem like anyone was taking training camp seriously. Oh and I don’t even want to get into Rice. If he knew Rice had a condition and what it was. He should have known the recovery time on the surgery and made damn sure that Rice was getting better by the time the surgery could be done and still allowed Rice to start the season.

Penalties. Sloppiness, TJ, there are a slew of things I can point out that show Childress is not an excellent head coach. The team he has built around him helps to hide it, but in the end his inadequacies leak through (12 man on the field anyone?) Time out because we can’t figure out what to do on an extra point?

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Oct 29, 2010 9:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Oh and I the whole TJ issue

I don’t think anyone in football would state that Childress handled TJ correctly.

Even TJ fans agree with you on that.

Good or bad the TJ question should have been resolved in the 2008 season.

by CanadianViking on Oct 29, 2010 9:34 AM CDT up reply actions

name the mistakes?

OK. Here goes:
Clock management;
Challenge flag use – or lack of (have seen way too many errors, both ways, in different situations)
Player management (anybody else notice how players 2nd years under chilly are usually worse than initial season. “Teachign skills”?)
Predictable play calling, where even those watching the game on tv accurately predict next play.
Trying to make players fit his “genius” plans, rather than planning around the strengths of the players he has.
NEED I CONTINUE?

by kagey on Oct 27, 2010 10:30 PM CDT reply actions

alright

Clock management- we have been okay

Clock management-agreee

Player management-hes only having problems with brett favre and daunte culpepper, he brought in jared allen and harvin who had character issues, guess what, they have become model citizen, fixed the love boat incident. Hes not positional coach how is he supposed to teach a DL or OL to play better cmonnnn

Predictable play calling-thats the offensive coordinator job

by eltwentyone on Oct 27, 2010 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions

agree

was on challenge flage use

by eltwentyone on Oct 27, 2010 11:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Okay, seriously.

Challenge flag use? Aside from this game, have you ever sat there and said “Gawd, Chilly is awful with these challenge flags,” because, seriously, I haven’t. He’s saved plenty of drives from would-be Peterson fumbles with a timely challenge flag.

Its pretty hard to blame him for the non-challenged TD. Should he have thrown it? Yeah. In hindsight, he should have. At the time, no. There was really no indication it wasn’t a catch. That’s what sucked the most about this game, is challenges really hurt us. The TD shouldn’t have been called one, and our’s shouldn’t have been miraculously taken back. And then that last TD shouldn’t have even been signalled as one. It was just horrible officiating.

The other stuff I’ll agree with, but, honestly, the challenge-flag bit you threw in there is a definite knee-jerk. If the challenges weren’t so heavily used this game, it wouldn’t even be on there.

by Frost on Oct 27, 2010 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions

hah yeah

also in thedefense, childeress he did not have chance to see the replay on the scoreboard, chilly is getting wayy to much flakk, but still he shuold have thrown it, also he did miss a challenge on the nfc championship, forgot..a player barely made it over the goalline and at the end of the day its players who make the plays on the field not the coach.

by eltwentyone on Oct 27, 2010 11:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok when you see the other teams extra point team sprinting on the field

that would actually make me take a time out, or just throw the flag and burn it that way. Remember this was still in teh first half so the time outs arn’t as important as they would be in the second half.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Oct 29, 2010 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

non-challenged TD

When FG team rushes in that a good sign that something is in the works, you can always throw the flag and change your mind. That would have bought a little time to make up mind, speaking of time how about the time before the half lost.

by speedlod on Oct 28, 2010 1:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Klink should get replaced

His only idea on how to win is to have better talent. He brought in a lot of talented players and then has them go head to head against the defense every week. He wants the players to just be better than the competition. Coaches that win consistently find ways to get mismatches, they use their plays to try to get the defense out of position. When was the last time you saw a vikings receiver run a pick to get someone else open? When was the last time you saw multiple crossing routes to confuse the defense? There are so many things that are missing in this play book.

gotta disagree

I dont understandd, all the blogs on DN were saying that refs screwed us over?? Childeress wrong in blaming the refs, thats hyporcritcal. Refs made mistakes and it was childerss opinion. The quarterback play was horrible, are you saying it wasnt? Childeress has done an overall good job, what is his record? he has improved 2 games each year. Its still early in the season relax, if he beats belichik, i know everybody is going to jump on his bandwagon. Lets wait till the end of year to make decisions on the coach.

by eltwentyone on Oct 28, 2010 8:32 AM CDT up reply actions

If he beats Belichik...

You mean same as everyone jumped on Favre bandwagon last year once he beat 49ers and then Packers x 2? Would you want to wait till the end of the year on QB to make your judgement?

Chilly has lots of games to go yet in the season and the Vikings aren’t out of the hunt. It’s too early for this thread.

I agree DC

“Firing the Coach” is always the solution when good teams struggle. Sometimes good teams just struggle and firing the coach will only make things worse. Shake things up by setting Favre or someone else or having a closed door meeting and talking very frank with each other clearing the air type of thing that is the kind of stuff that might help but firing Chilly will only make a bad situation worse.

Not time to panic this is the Vikings this is what we do, for 50 years now. I have been around for 80% of them and I have learned to live with it.

I am afraid that the Vikings will only ever be good enough to break my heart. But what a ride until then.

Don’t ruin this for me. I’ve been waiting YEARS to have everyone calling for Childress’s head. Just because some of the arguments aren’t correct, and it may be a totally insane idea to do it, still give me a couple of days to revel in the Childress hate.

Thank you very much have a nice day, please drive through.

The simple fact that ESPN (mark schlereth) says this

means its not true. ESPN isn’t in it for the truth, just the hype. One week they’ll praise someone then the next throw them to the wolves. You don’t give an extension to someone the year prior then just fire him the next. Especially considering you have a 41 year old leading the team.

Does he make bad decisions from time to time? yes. Does the “great” cheater over at New England do the same? YES!. Example: Vs. the San Diego Chargers. Instead of punting the ball they go for it on a long 4th and 1. I mean come on, its 1 yard, his awesome play-book can’t figure out how to get one yard? They don’t make it and give the Chargers good field position for an attempt at a field goal. he’s had other incidents of it last year.

Fire him now? no. If he continues to start Brett Favre when he’s not playing at a starting quarterbacks level. YES. Take away Bretts legendary past, and you have a terrible quarterback with way too many errant throws who is slower then hell and his body parts are falling apart.

Its not Bretts fault he got old, so i’m not putting this start on his shoulders (because his ankle surely would snap then) but C’MON man.

when have we had a good coach?

We havent had a coach since Bud Grant. Denny Green?? Cmon now, I couldnt wait till he left. Then Tice, now Squidward?? To think of all the coaching talent we let go..Dungy, Billick, Tomlin, and if we dont promote him to head coach soon, Frazier. Who knows what kind of success we might have had with some real coaching. I believe last year was more a product of what Brett Favre brought with him than what coaching was done by Childress. Please move him into the front office somewhere and move Leslie Frazier to the head coaching spot where he belongs.

by rube6642 on Oct 28, 2010 12:34 PM CDT reply actions

There are a lot of good coaches out there . But with the collective bargaining breakdown it isn't financially beneficial to pursue a new coach until after they settle .

Peterson did fumble once . He may be as good as his rookie year . But the O-line scheme isn’t . Sometimes when a coach calls out a player it helps to motivate . I don’t see Brett being hurt or distracted by these comments . I am more concerned this week for the health of the secondary and o-line . Supersnoop above forgets that the Patriots have as much to lose . If we win their coach won’t be the mastermind of the past . And Brady has as much a chance of getting KOed as Brett if not more . Our D-line lost our last game . They will be out for redemption . The bad weather that is hitting the coast will favor a balanced controll offense like Farve and Jackson will run . I hope trooper remembers to remind the Pats to prepare for Jackson too . Remember what the WildCat did to them the first time as NE doesn’t account for changes . We need to control their young Defense . And both trenches need to step up . We did well with the Jets in the second half . And they are much scarier than the Pats .
