Vikings at Patriots, Second Half Thread

Moss has no catches thus far, but the Vikings find themselves tied with the Patriots anyway. (Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)

Yes, the Vikings and the Patriots are tied at seven at halftime, but it's hard to think that the Vikings shouldn't have a lead right now.

In a move that will be second-guessed whether the Vikings end up winning this game or not, the Vikings faced fourth-and-goal at the Patriots' 1-yard line with a minute left in the first half. Rather than taking the gimme field goal, Brad Childress decided to go for the touchdown. . .and he might have been successful if Phil Loadholt hadn't gotten utterly blown up by the Patriots defense, allowing them to stifle Peterson in the backfield.

The Vikings have also survived Percy Harvin's most recent near-catastrophic injury, as he twisted an ankle early in the first quarter, but has returned and been successful after that point.

The Vikings and Patriots are tied at 7 at halftime. . .keep it here for the second half, folks!

I just thought

getting the points on the board when you get the ball to start the second half was the smart play. Every game has been close, and if the VIkings lose by a point, or need a TD to win as opposed to a FG to tie on the last drive of the game, I’m going to be really, really, pissed.

I can see how you would want the 3 points there. But I don’t think you could call it a horrible call.

Redskins fan here

(yes, we lost to the lions; I’m hating life right now)

Why did Childress call for it on 4th down? Isn’t the rule called “take the points” for a reason? And Favre looks pretty mobile. Just started watching but looks like a good game. Good luck! :D

Question: Woody, what happened to the ball movement? Answer: I think our defense was pretty solid tonight. We held them to under 200 points so we did our job on that end.

“Nothing short of an awful throw by Favre on that INT. Also a great play by McCourty to rip it out, make the grab. Turnovers kill….If the ball is in front of Harvin, he might turn upfield for a TD. It was woefully behind him. Awful.”

Well we choked again

Sigh. Defense finally showed their true colors when it matters the most. How do you NOT tackle that guy back on the 3rd down when he’s right in front of you and you have a buffer of a good 3-4 yards as well, to drag him down? Ridiculous.

Liked the two plays that we saw from T-Jack, sorry to see Favre get jacked up but great job (sarcasm here) by Hutchinson, who (along with the rest of our O-line) just looks totally inconsistent at best. Hope Brett’s okay.

It’s finally time to start digging the Viking’s grave for the season, folks. They’d need to win 9 straight and that just ain’t gonna happen.

I don't know about that.

Considering that RBs start wearing down around this point in their careers, they’d probably be smarter to trade him and start rebuilding with a franchise QB. We just saw what happens when 2 teams both have somewhat wimpy offenses but one relies on an air-attack and the other relies on a ground attack. The ground attack just doesn’t score quickly enough to really help with momentum or playing catch-up. I’ll take an ineffective ground game over an ineffective passing game ANY day (just see the Green Bay Packers for proof of that).

"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

If this were week 17 and we needed one game to make the playoffs, I’d be sure, all in with Favre. But it’s not. We need 7 wins at an absolute minimum to have a remote shot. His body has been tried and found wanting of an impossible standard. It’s done. His place in history is secure, let’s not make a farce of it.

by loldotcom on Oct 31, 2010 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

The real culprit all along has been 1. an inconsistent and crappy O-line that let Favre be pressured way too effing much, and 2. a totally pansified D-line that should all be fired or at the least have their paychecks cut in half. \:(

THOSE are the things that have really killed this team, if you follow the clues back to the source.

by killerk968 on Oct 31, 2010 6:27 PM CDT reply actions

Lost the Dolphins game single-handedly

with 4 turnovers. And he kept his “streak” alive; no that the 292 games streak, the streak this season of having as many or more turnovers than TDs in every game!

The bigger point is that this season is lost, time to let TJack develop for the future.

by Ace991 on Oct 31, 2010 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions

You have a good point concerning TJ's fate.

It would be good to know whether he’s a buy or sell before 2011. But I still want to see Favre play before he retires at the end of the season – which he undoubtedly will IMO.

by jshep on Oct 31, 2010 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

by chuckd@79 on Oct 31, 2010 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Excuses, excuses.

Bad Receivers doesn’t make a QB make totally boneheaded decisions or crappy, inaccurate passes. I stand by the T-suck hate.

by Wytefang on Oct 31, 2010 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Its not an excuse its a fact

If you dont want to look at facts and reason then you hate on T jack for some other reason. Maybe the fact that T jack does not “look the part of a QB”

by chuckd@79 on Oct 31, 2010 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Nah.

That’s not it. It’s just that he sucks and has sucked and will continue to suck. Oh, did I forget to mention that he “sucks?” That’s why. ;)

by Wytefang on Oct 31, 2010 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's see...

the hellish part of our schedule is over and we were in every single game. Could finish 7-2 and be in the playoff hunt in a wide open NFC. Should be favored in a majority of games we have left. Still time to turn it around.

All of the above possible if Favre plays, not TJack.

SKOL VIKINGS!

by jcase0 on Oct 31, 2010 6:27 PM CDT reply actions

No.

All of the above is possible with an untested quarterback. It’s an old story, the veteran gets hurt, the youthful guy whose had some time to develop now and has health breaks out.

None of it is possible with a man who walks on a shattered, numb leg that just can’t mechanically carry him any more, and now has a broken jaw.

by ragnarrahl on Oct 31, 2010 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Nonsense...

First bad half from TJack and the vultures will be on him like it’s 2008.

by jcase0 on Oct 31, 2010 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't care about vultures.

I care about the fact that Favre does not have a future on the football field and does not have what it takes to give us a possibility for the present either. If his jaw can move he might have a future coaching.

Whereas Jackson might have the first. And there’s an odd possibility of him having the second. He can move. If he’s learned at all how to throw the ball he’s got a chance with the receivers that are out there.

by ragnarrahl on Oct 31, 2010 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Were you around in 2008?

Find a tape of the Vikes-Eagles playoff game. TJack’s future is in the UFL.

by jcase0 on Oct 31, 2010 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

This

All the T-suck apologists haven’t seen him play for so long that they’re forgetting the past history and his (T-suck’s) utter ineptitude. Nope, it’s time for us to find a long-term future good QB for our team.

by Wytefang on Oct 31, 2010 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Were you around last week?

Having a bad game does not preclude having a future.

And say you’re right. What of it? We aren’t losing out on anything anyway. Joe Webb needs time to develop.

by ragnarrahl on Oct 31, 2010 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm talking 2010...

This season is salvagable. We can not throw it away grooming a throwaway QB at the end of the year. We can sign a good FA QB for 2011.

by jcase0 on Oct 31, 2010 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

You raise a fair point about having nothing to lose, at least. Who knows? Miracles can happen, I guess. I’d rather see Joe Webb play, though, than T-suck.

by Wytefang on Oct 31, 2010 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I want Joe Webb's future

to be when he’s had some time, precisely to make sure he starts out well enough that the “vultures” don’t eat him alive and discount him from starting again later. In other words, I don’t want you to be talking about Webb in two years the exact way you talk about T-jack now.

Outside run containment

on JA’s side is nonexistent. How does a guy rush from the outside so often not tackle the runner going by him?

Beyond that – the FO failed to change the OLine at all to protect Favre. Give them their due in this as well as the OLine inconsistency.

by jshep on Oct 31, 2010 6:31 PM CDT reply actions

True that about not upgrading the O-Line

Sullivan needs to replaced, he is not an NFL center, period.

McKinnie may be gone free agency.

Loadholt needs to improve big time or be cut.

Herrera is just “meh” for now, should look to draft a G to replace him or Huchinson (declining fast) soon.

Favre's health

Folks, his jaw is broken. That puts him on IR and the end of his career. Hopefully it won’t leave any permanent damage.

If we are talking Favre now, we should be speaking of him well, hoping for the best. if we are talking Vikings quarterbacks, we should be talking who we can get to be Jackson’s backup.

This is Tarvaris Jackson’s team now.

by medicineball on Oct 31, 2010 6:31 PM CDT reply actions

Why are we stunting Jackson's development any more?

I wouldn't mind seeing what TJ can do for a full game before next year's draft.

Although give Favre the first snap to keep his streak no one will beat… ever?

by Vikings- on Oct 31, 2010 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

He's saying that T-suck hasn't shown anything good today, for the most part.

He inherited a goal-line TD, basically, and other than that pretty much was totally ineffective in garbage time, even. What part was hard for you to understand?

by Wytefang on Oct 31, 2010 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions

He played like 10 plays WTF

Favre played 7 games this year and was terrible. Stop hating on TJack. Who knows how he’ll do, but it sure as hell won’t help us to play Favre more this year.

You Favre homers are hillarious.

by Ace991 on Oct 31, 2010 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

His last 3 games were actually very good.

He tried to do a bit too much with his feet, but otherwise put up very respectable numbers.

by loldotcom on Oct 31, 2010 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions

And bear in mind

that the last several games he did well in, the teams we played had no motivation for those matches. Hard to really give him too much credit.

by Wytefang on Oct 31, 2010 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Not true

The Falcons were fighting tooth and nail. TJack OUTPLAYED Matt Ryan easily in that game, he just had a fluke fumble and Sharper failed to scoop a fumble by Ryan

The Cardinals had a playoff spot yes, but they had 3 games to try to get a bye. TJack played lights out. Period.

by Ace991 on Oct 31, 2010 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow.

That’s some great hindsight you got going. Go put your money where your mouth is then at Vegas and bet on T-suck if you’re so sure he’s the answer. Take a poll in Viking nation and you’ll find that you’re badly in the minority thinking T-suck is the magical answer.

by Wytefang on Oct 31, 2010 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Who cares?

I may not be able to name his receivers at the time but I can remember all the obviously bad passes by him under NO pressure, the crappy, unintelligent decisions he made on the field, and the generally uninspired plays he made. That’s all anyone needs to know.

Whatever loser, go hug your Favre jersey

And before you say you’d draft someone else, you’re the same type that would have drafted Matt Leinert and Jay Cutler with top 15 picks. Stop your school girl fantasy of these overrated QBs, which includes Favre now.

by Ace991 on Oct 31, 2010 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions

That was his 2nd year

When Shiancoe could catch a cold, Rice was always injured and we see how good Berrian is now.

by chuckd@79 on Oct 31, 2010 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Rice was hurt off and on the entire year

He even said he didn’t even start to work out right until after that year, when he worked with Larry Fitz and Chris Carter.

You guys are straight TJack haters and Favre ass-kissers. Well, Favre ain’t leading you to the promised land this year, and he ain’t coming back.

And Jake Locker is not going to save this team. I watch the Pac-10 every week and he is MILES from being an NFL QB. Playing terrible this year. Like Favre.

by Ace991 on Oct 31, 2010 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

No TJack hater here

I want what’s best for the Vikings. In 2010 it’s Favre. In 2011 give TJack his chance along with McNabb or whoever else we sign and bring in.

Well

it’s fair to expect fans to cheer on their team but consider what was expected of this team, its potential and everything, people have a huge right to be pissed off and/or somewhat pessimistic.

Let everyone vent and maybe fans will feel better and still want to cheer a bit, despite the playoffs being out of the picture now (mostly)

by Wytefang on Oct 31, 2010 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough—but there’s venting and there’s writing the season off. It’s not impossible yet, and the way the NFC’s shaping up this year it’s entirely possible one or two 8-8 teams will make it in. This is still a good team, and the schedule gets easier from here on in. Blind optimism’s my middle name. ;)

by NWOntario on Oct 31, 2010 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I hear ya

I’m just not seeing us defeating the Giants, Eagles, or Chicago (at their field) in our remaining games, especially if we’re stuck with T-suck. Not to mention even beating the Packers at home, the way things have gone for us. Though at least they wouldn’t have paid-off home-field refs helping them like they did this year (and most years).

So I put our odds of even reaching .500 at about 20-30% at most.

by stallone on Oct 31, 2010 6:44 PM CDT reply actions

We need to start digging gthe grave

We are done. Farve has to be forced to sit, I mean seriously, any other sport or any other QB with similar injuries not named Brett Farve would have been forced to sit out with 2 fractures in their foot, yet Chilldress in his almighty wisdom thought he should start.

Defense had a bad day today. I will admit that but they have also been the only reason we have been in the games we have this season so I will give them the benifit of the doubt today. The only thing that I will say is our thin CB depth is clerly showing through and our beyond poor safeties are clearly not good enough.

Playcalling and time management is still an issue which iusn’t surprising. Zygi Wilf needs to seriously think about getting rid of Chilldress. Maybe not now but if he doesn’t pull a rabbit out of his ass in the remaining games I don’t see any reason why he should be kept on. Given how much Talent we have this year alone and given our preformances and the way we have preparded, its an absolute joke. As Chilly stated earlier this week over the Farve injury deal “I’m not losing any sleep over it, it will all work itself out” I seriously hope you start taking this team seriously because he is an absolute joke.

I don’t see how we can be this inept while Chilldress has been HC and yet we, the fans, are the only ones who can see how bad this guy really is????

by FSUViking on Oct 31, 2010 6:54 PM CDT reply actions

What really sucks is that without Favre, we have no other decent QB to help us. We probably better hope he’s okay.

I’d rather us tank just to get Chilly out of town. We aren’t going anywhere very fast.

by FSUViking on Oct 31, 2010 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Besides play on a fractured foot in two places?

I didnt say he was the reason we lost, but he has been the reason we are in the position over the course of 7 NFL games.

by FSUViking on Oct 31, 2010 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions

If you really want

I can post his stats and show you how badly he has been this season.

by FSUViking on Oct 31, 2010 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Well I won't agree about it being Favre's fault at all.

It’s a lot like a murder – you have to really follow the clues ALL the way back to the source before making any claims. In this case it’s the O-line that’s been utterly inconsistent and awful at times. I don’t care if we had Peyton Manning, if he’s facing that kind of pressure, something’s going to give.

I put WAY more blame on the crap O-line and the pathetic D-line. They both suck and deserve to have their paychecks cut in half (at least). Pathetic. \:(
