Minnesota Vikings Trade DE Jayme Mitchell To Cleveland Browns

SAN FRANCISCO - AUGUST 22: Anthony Dixon #33 of the San Francisco 49er runs runs against Jayme Mitchell #92 of the Minnesota Vikings during an NFL pre-season game at Candlestick Park on August 22 2010 in San Francisco California. (Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)

We said all pre-season that the Vikings have an insane amount of depth on the defensive line, and that they should probably try to trade some of it away for help at other spots. Well, the Vikings are doing that now, but the help they're getting isn't immediate.

Per the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Vikings have shipped defensive end Jayme Mitchell to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a "late-round 2012 draft pick."

Mitchell joined the Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi in 2006. He had only one tackle this season so far, a sack that came in the season opener.

I wish we could have gotten something more for Mitchell, but it is what it is. Better than letting someone that talented walk away without any compensation at all.

Best of luck to Jayme Mitchell in Cleveland!

Wasted value :(

Mitchell looked pretty good in the preseason (unless I’m going insane, which is feasible). I’m sure the tape on him is ok. Seems like the need to get players in was about 2 weeks into the preseason when it was obvious we lacked depth at WR – that is when we should have started trying to get maximum value from our talented 2nd (and 3rd!) string D-Line. Late draft pick 2012… really?

What's there to wonder ?

Letroy Guion came to us in the fifth rd and sat in the 46-53 seat for nearly two years . He will be Pat Williams replacement as he adds 15-20 more lbs. to his frame . Everson Griffen is a good insurance luxery at this point . I hope he sits quietly for some time . Dunbar will groom him in case Edwards doesn’t want the contract he is offered . And that year in the system . In that worse case scenario is a good thing .
How about Seattle giving a 4th and a conditional 2012 pick for Lynch . Sorry again Green Bay . Julius Jones was dropped . Mayne he’ll go to KC and play behind his bro . Green Bay could have got the one player to assist them in finally beating the Vikes while we are nursing injuries . And the Pack FO blew it again . Maybe Aaron’s little Schism may begin to unravel the Pack . As A-Dogg put in a pretty bold request for Lynch . I guess he is getting tired of all the sacks after all . Or did the Cutler concussion maybe help Rodgers along . Sorry Pack . It looks like the FO held on to the checkbook a little too long again . But as a Vike fan I love their consistency .

We will wait for S. Ellis’s MRI on his knee to come back and keep enjoying how this year is finally unraveling in our favor .
On your point . Mitchell really elevated his game this year . I like his production and work ethic . Now you begin to see what New England goes thru as they groom players only to trade them . We now have 8 picks in 2011 . And 9 in 2012 . That is a good thing in building our future . Now the war room needs to learn to move up and down boards in a productive way . As much as Gerhart is a great addition to our team . We could have kept all those picks and build in multiple areas . Safety , WR OLB and others . It’s done . Now we are seeing the team improve it’s chances of being successful with the added picks . Even if it is for the future . As the Collective bargaining may shy away several Jr. and Sophmores . The 2012 class maybe a loaded group for talent .
My fears rest in who we bring up . As someone has to attempt to get thru waivers as Rice returns . Will it be D’Imperio ? Tremaine Johnson has an outside chance ? Or maybe John Nalbone/TE with experience in the AFC East ? Or a Vincent Jackson accusition maybe ? What is your brain churning out !

Pretty low value for a pretty promising talent

This isn’t an Earth-shattering move by any stretch of the imagination, but I thought Mitchell looked good in the preseason. As Chris said we have a ton of depth on the D-line so this won’t hurt, but it sure as heck doesn’t help much either. Here’s to hoping Mitchell gets some playing time and helps out a Cleveland team that needs a lot of it.

Dang!

I was sort of proud of our depth at D-lilne…

Remember what happened when we gave up Darius to the Giants? Wasn’t than that we heard about Sid’s surgery? Seemed we had decent depth there than all of a sudden we were short. Hope the same doesn’t happen on the D_line.

Well, sorry to see him go

But better to get a late round draft pick than nothing. and if the FO can stockpile picks, they might package them and move up for more talent, which the TOA has a penchant for doing.

You and Deek hit on two of the main points . Sad to see the depth go down . Happy to recieve something over nothing .

But could this mean that Vincent is ready to sign . We all know that thae Rice is still soaking in the pool ?

Hmm....

The question I have is… How late is late?

It would be nice to know what pick, but considering it is with the Browns it will likely be in the top half of whatever round it is.

Agreed

If it’s a 7th round pick, it’s probably not a good deal in my mind. A 6th might be ok, a 5th would be preferred. A 5th rounder for him actually would be a pretty good return, but I imagine it will be performance based.

We can hope for a sixth . I wonder after we settled for a seventh for a rotational guy in Reynaud .

I hate when they use the word conditional . Some writer is trying to increase his writer’s time by holding back info I’d guess .

Wonder why we need to do this?

Perhaps to open a roster spot? For who, another WR? Hmmmmm…

BSPN is running with the story also...stay tuned

"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

Wow

I took a look at The Dawg Pound affiliate, and they’re over there questioning if this is a good deal. Does the ineptitude of the franchise extend to the fans?

Mitchell was good enough to make the Vikings roster at DL, and his production is not far behind Robison. If we lost Ray Edwards, I’d be thinking “Well at least we still have Mitchell..” and they’re wondering if a late round pick 2 years from now is a good move?

Some other braniac suggested that even with Moss, he seriously doubts the Vikings could make the playoffs this year. Are people that brainwashed by the media hype machine. The Vikings are an instant super bowl contender with Moss and Rice back.

Praise for Jayme Mitchell

I was just looking over at the Vikings’ personnel transactions over at nfl.com/transactions . That list goes back to when Onterrio Smith was cut by Brad Childress before the ‘06 draft. Way back then, in 06’, at the end of training camp, undrafted free agent Jayme Mitchell was cut. He stuck around on the practice squad. A few weeks later, he was activated. Since then he has played for the Vikings. He was on IR for a while.

It takes a while for defensive ends to learn to play the game. Mitchell not only stuck on the Vikings’ roster, he got better and better.

This preseason, Mitchell was an unstoppable force. He had really begun to blossom.

The Browns got a very solid player and didn’t give up very much.

Thank you to Jayme Mitchell for working hard, and realizing his potential, ultimately giving to the Vikings a draft pick, when he himself was not even drafted. I wish him well in Cleveland. I hope he can help contribute to the ongoing comeback of the Browns franchise.
