The Official Ask Gang Green Nation Thread
Hi folks.
I run Gang Green Nation and am here to take questions about the Jets. I have a day job that keeps me pretty occupied so don't be alarmed if I'm slow to respond. I promise I will get to your questions.
If you could rec this post so it does not get hidden in this section of your fine community, that would be super.
Who knows? Maybe we will even talk a bit about the series between the Yankees and the Twins too.
This FanPost was created by a registered user of The Daily Norseman, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of the site. However, since this is a community, that view is no less important.

Vikings/Jets alot alike?
is it just me or do the two teams seem alot alike? Great defenses, great RBs, can throw the ball downfield ( Vikings since adding Moss), and it is wierd how Keller and Shianco are almost carbon copies of each other. I think the only diffrence is the size of the coaches. I think Rex could eat Childress at 1 sitting…LOL Anyway good luck w the game and I hope to see you guys later this year if you know what I mean….
good luck?
…this sign of sportmanship happens often..but i , for one, don’t get it..
why would one wish their opponent “good luck” ?? at least qualify it with something like " well, i hope we kill you..but after that, here’s wishing you well for the rest of the season"…or something
just sayin’

..and just for the record..
..wasn’t targetted at you , just the general, overuse and platitudinization of the term in a competitive setting.. my point was that one can’t possibly mean it at that moment..otherwise, one may be inadvertantly saying “hope you beat us”.. prob just me though.
..and yes , i may just have made up a new word…

That would only be true if Peterson was failing and Gerhart was picking up the slack on one end . And it is only true on Offense as we struggled without a tall Red Zone threat . With our latest trade . I would tend to disagree with you because of our new statis . Unless the Jets found a 6-4 Probowler that runs a sub 4.3 I would tend to disagree .

A real football question
In a game where Revis will be tied up on one receiver all game (Moss) how do the Jets use the blitz? Most teams would or could not blitz. They would use a safety to help the CB. Can the Jets avoid doing this and blitz with a safety? How do you see the threat of Adrien Peterson affecting your defensive scheme?
"Is it normal to wake up in the morning in a sweat because you can't wait to beat another human's guts out?"
Joe Kapp
The way the Jets usually use Revis against elite receivers is to have him follow said receiver around all game, whether he goes left, right, or into the slot. Even without Revis since the second half of Week 2, Rex Ryan blitzes a ton. You’ll see blitzes from every angle and every guy imaginable. Last year, the coverage held more often than not when the other team picked up the blitz. It hasn’t been the same this year. Revis’ return will change that.
I don’t think we’ll see much of a change in philosophy with Peterson in the backfield. The Jets have the league’s fourth ranked run defense. Their guys up front are winning their matchups. They shut down Ray Rice in the opener. Rice is no Peterson, though.
To kind of touch on both of your points, the Jets struggle against the screen because of their attacking style. Screens to Peterson are scary.

Do you hear that Childress?
If only Childress will pull his head out of his rear long enough to give his veteran QB a little more leeway to adlib at the line of scrimage.

Revis might just get voted off his own Island this Monday ?
The Jets might be looking to drop out of the top ten with Revis’s limp .
The Bears went from 1st to 6th when facing a teamthat can tote the rock .

similar question to LLF
in a 3 WR set, with moss, harvin and berrian/camarillo and shank at te, how do you plan on stopping that knowing that Revis might not be ready to go. And then there is always the threat of the Run, and we can run. Also, who’s defense do you think is better and why?
We have options.
There a ways we can cover you offensive weapons, of course everyone won’t be shut down but you’re missing one important point. Your receiver average 9.5 yards per catch I believe. The lowest average in the NFL. With Moss coming in he’ll open up some opportunities but with that argument you forget another factor, what if your offensive line and Favre continue playing little little leaguers? If Favre is getting pressured non stop and can’t make any smart throw because he’s running for his life what good will your receivers do? As a Jets fan I know just as well as you do that Favre is fully capable of hurling jump balls where anyone can come down with the catch. If Favre plays like garbage what will all your weapons do then?

last year, at the beginning of the year, he wasn't particularly sharp either
but the difference was that we played the lions and the browns to get Favre some practice, and he also had Sid. This year he didn’t get any of that. And as for our line, it stepped up last week. It allowed 2 sacks and only a small amount of pressure on favre. All this against a really strong front four of the lions(never thought i’d say that) and with a backup center.
And don’t worry about the errors, its the Interwebs!
I would add that after Revis played with a hamstring ailment and injured it further in Week 2, he’s not going to be playing unless he is ready to go.
The plan might be similar to my answer above, although I could see the Jets playing some of Cromartie on Moss as Cromartie shut him down three weeks ago.
Basically, though, Revis checks his man, and coverage rolls to the secondary targets.

I have a question for vikings fan
what makes you guys so cocky that your the favorites even though you got randy moss. Your 1 1/2 back from the packers and you don’t even know how randy moss will perform and the packers have a pretty good corner back also that i’m sure favre will have problems with?
JETS
Have you seen a Green Bay, Detroit or Chicago game this year?
If you have, then you won’t wonder why we think we are the favorites to win the division.
The Packers have absolutely no running game, and their offensive line is still about as bad as it was last year. They do have good, aging, cornerbacks. But with a legitimate deep threat, and some really good supporting receivers, they will have their hands full.
The Lions are improving, but they are nowhere near where they need to be in order to be a contender.
The Bears… Well, the Bears are only a few games away from imploding. They still have no receivers, the O-line is terrible and their defense is a shadow of what it was 5years ago. Not to mention the fact that Lovie Smith is panicking and starting to bench starters and playing the roster-shuffle.
We started against the Super Bowl Champions, and then went to a much improved Dolphins team and lost both games by a very close margin. We were in position to win both games, but with a rusty Favre and no Sidney, we had a hard time closing the deal.
Favre was rusty for the first few games last year as well, but we were lucky enough to play the Lions and the Browns, which is a major reason we won those first two games.
To summarize, the Vikings have the best defense in the division maybe even in the NFC), have some very talented weapons on the offensive side of the ball, and despite the 1-2 start are probably in the best position to take the division.
Dont' forget
Cutler is out this Sunday..
And, we were 1 score away from winning the close games..
Even w/ a Rusty Favre & no Sidney, we’re not as bad as we look or our record represents..
Works in our favor though, because teams will underestimate us.
hmmmmmmmmmmm
i think we have the right to be confident in our team that had all 22 starters return. And 1 1/2 games can be turned real quick, prime example being the bears. They went into the medowlands unbeaten and got absolutely raped by a win less team. Also you have on the other hand where the pack almost got beat by the lions, at home. And for moss, he isn’t a player that is going to be running super complex routes, he is a deep threat. And that was what Sidney was, randy is a player that Favre needs. A guy that can simply go up and get it, and that is going to take a lot less time to develop a rhythm vs a straight route running guy like Percy or Welker. And your comment related to the Packers CB, they are good, but with all the injury’s (morgan burnett and nick barnet) it is going to be difficult to compensate especially when you have a player like moss and a speedster like harvin in the inside. Also on the note of our WR’s, now that we have somebody to take Rice’s place, we can slide BB and Percy back into their natural positions. And lastly, GB is 3 weeks away and we will see them again when Rice is healthy.
Cocky, or just confident :)
We know what our team is, michael. We know that we sent 12 guys to the Pro Bowl earlier this year, and all 12 of those guys are still on the roster, and only one of them is injured. And now we have Moss back as well. Sure, the Vikings have dropped a couple of games that they should have slide through, but this is the NFL, ‘any given Sunday’ and all that. We know what issues the Vikings have, and believe me, we’re tough as nails on our own team. We may drink the Purple kool aide from the Gjallerhorn, but we have lots of skeptics here who keep the fan-ship on an even keel.
A lot of us still believe that the Minnesota Vikings are the best team in the NFL, this year, just like they were, last year. They just need to get into sync again, and guess what? Just your luck, it looks to me like that’s going to happen on Monday :)

A more specific answer :)
We were looking fat in the WR corps back in July, but then Rice went into surgery, Jaymar Johnson got injured, Harvin started having migraine issues, and everything was off-kilter with Favre coming in late as usual. Then the Favre-bashing began, the media talking about how old he is, look at all those interceptions, the old man has to start going down sometime, maybe this is the year. Maybe it is… but I don’t think it’s started yet.
4 of those 6 interceptions that Favre’s had went off the hands or torso of the intended receiver, they get logged to Favre despite the fact that he hit his targets. One of those interceptions came because he was hit as he was throwing. That leaves us with one INT which was truly, 100%, Favre’s fault. I can live with that, and I don’t think that indicates that he’s trending down. On the contrary, I think he’s going to surprise his naysayers this year. Again.
For the WR corps, Moss really is the ‘missing piece’ of the puzzle. He’ll stretch the opposing D (and that’d be your guys, come Monday), making it difficult for them to stack the box again Peterson. Remember Peterson? If not, he’ll remind you that paying too much attention to Moss is a mistake. Moss is experienced enough that I think he’ll make an immediate impact with Favre throwing to him. He may not know the whole play book, but he’ll have enough down to force coverage to focus on him. That’s when Harvin will move underneath, the doctors say they think they’ll get his migraines under control at last. We also have Shanko, our TE threat, and arguably Favre’s favorite target. He can also throw to Peterson, to Gerhart, and even to Albert Young. Gerhart’s our young and upcomming rook RB. What’s he like? Think Adrian Peterson with a little less strength but better footwork. Where AP plows defenders over, Gerhart is more likely to sidestep them, then carry 3 or 4 guys on his back as he grinds out the last few yards. Gerhart was a Heismann runner up, I think he’ll turn out alright.
On the defensive side, we have the #2 D in the NFL in terms of holding the opposition to the fewest points. Only the Steelers have done better, and they’re AFC, not NFC. And the Vikings did that despite having two of their main corners on IR, Griffen and Cook. They returned in week 3 and are both still getting up to speed. Cook, our 1st round draft pick this year, did well enough to go toe-to-toe with Calvin Johnson, holding Megatron down to 56 yards. That ain’t shabby for a rook. And our secondary was our weak point. The D-line is still a run-stopping machine and that machine is firing on all cylinders. In fact, to be honest, it was really the D that won the game against the Lions, giving our sputtering offense plenty of second-chances.
The special teams is solid on kick and punt coverage (although we have issues on punt returns if Bernard Berrian is attempting to field them), and the booters are both excellent. If there’s a weakness there, it’s that Longwell can’t consistently put the ball in the end-zone on kick-offs, but he gets close enough that we can usually make the stop at around the 20.

We saw what these guys could do last year. We started the season with a lot of those guys injured, but almost all are back that will be back now (only Sidney Rice now, plus of course Chester Taylor).
We saw what these guys are capable of, only 9 months ago. Did you see them play last year? If you did, how can you discount that we can’t get back to that form again?
By the way, for the record I don’t consider us the favorites. I’ve always had this game penciled in as one of the more likely losses for the year, and nothing has changed that. Yes, we can (and hopefully will!) win, but … I’m not calling us favorites.
For that matter, who here IS saying we are the favorites? Are you putting words in our collective mouths?
Cocky or Confident in our players resolve and Ziggy's all out quest to win at all costs . Other fans dream of their Franchises ability to make the moves we made .
I don’t see where the term cocky applies . We were speaking in terms of desperate to win with Detroit last week . As we patiently and frustratingly wait for our core to heal . You won’t see such boasts until after week 8 . And it won’t be the record that matters . It will be the health of the overall team . I don’t see Vike fans predicting a blow out . As several Jets fans claimed this week that the Jets own the Vikes . As all the non – Rex lead teams didn’t . And we have never faced this team with Sanchez before . We do know from experience that Randy scares the hell out of other Defenses . Even as a decoy . He causes havoc on opposing teams . But the confidence comes in the increased health of our Defense . And the Vikings commitment to the run . As you see with Peterson this year . That commitment was given weeks before Sidney went to surgery . We even scouted the Florida Center . As he may have been taken over Percy if available . We don’t place all our eggs in Brett’s baskett . As long as he stays erect . Not referring to his phone here ? He truely needs to run the West Coast as it is intended . Dink . Dunk . And go deep as the coverage allows . If they use a cover two to stop the deep balls . Peterson will be throwing Revis around like a rag doll .
And the second point already brought up . Is the enemies in the NFC North are fading fast . And their records don’t reflect their IR statis and non agressive or poor decisions . As moves would be the wrong word to use . Since they haven’t made any . Every year that Brett plays . Our enemies seem to sit on the bench and watch us pass them by . But we know that their is 13 weeks left and playoffs to be played . So if you view are expectations of running deep into the playoffs with or with out Brett every year are Cocky ? Then I guess you can be correct as your poor team has to deal with half confident fans like yourself to lift them when they need to be lifted .

I have one...
How is the rush defense this year? Are you guys missing anyone, or is your front 7 roughly the same as it has always been?
We're still strong.
I believe we’re 4th in the league at stopping the run. Kris Jenkins went down and he’s out for the season but we went half of last year without him as well so we’re just about the same.

Last year Sione Pouha played so well at nose tackle that he took the job permanently, and Jenkins was to move to end in the 3-4.

LOL
I wasn’t born yesterday pal ! Jenkins went on IR . He was inserted as the backup . Your previous #1 defense instantly dropped to a respectable 6th . As Jenkins was reinserted in 2010 back into his starting role . As Rex hates to pay big money if a player isn’t on the field . Jenkins came back too early . And through poor conditioning and still playing hurt he was rolled upon . And you are back again . Like the movie Groundhog’s day . To being a good but far from dominate defense in the rest of 2010 . Yes you have decent backups . But as Rex sold out many Veterians on both sides of the ball . The 2010 Jets left their Swagger at the HardKnocks movie set . HBO isn’t real . And the Jets are not as real as they were last year in the first half of the year . After going 3-0 . You went 4-7 . As a less productive team this year the slide could get worse .
There is also the fact of a history of above 5oo records and Division and Conference Championships that we hold . As you can not bost such Tradition or stats ! Sorry . The facts are the facts . Win a few big games on the road and I will listen to your logic . But truth be told it’s your backs against the wall this week if you are Cocky enough to call your team the favorites in this match up ?

You are wrong on many counts.
The Jets finished the year with the league’s number one defense last year.
Pouha started at nose against Baltimore. Jenkins played end. You are incorrect to assert otherwise.
Torn ACL’s aren’t caused by “bad conditioning.”
This was a lame and factually inaccurate attempt at smack. You do much to discredit your community acting in this way.

I think you might be misunderstanding Gothic, which is easy to do.
First, he never claimed the ACL tear was due to poor conditioning, he said he was “rolled upon” or someone rolled up on his leg tearing the ACL.
Though, most would agree that you are more prone to injury when you are tired, so even if he did claim that bad conditioning caused the tear he would not be completely wrong.
And how are we supposed to know that Pouha started at NT and Jenkins played DE when your roster and depth chart state otherwise?
Anyhow, what is with this “Discrediting your community” mumbo-jumbo? Do you often judge a group of people based on one member?
First, he never claimed the ACL tear was due to poor conditioning, he said he was "rolled upon" or someone rolled up on his leg tearing the ACL.
If when he said “through poor conditioning and still playing hurt he was rolled upon,” meant that he’s saying conditioning played no role, then yes I misunderstood. I don’t think that’s what happened, here, though.

uh, maybe you could quit trying to be such a....mall cop.

in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
If when he said "through poor conditioning and still playing hurt he was rolled upon," meant that he’s saying conditioning played no role, then yes I misunderstood. I don’t think that’s what happened, here, though.
I never said he said it played no role, only that he didn’t mean it was the only reason.
Because I told you guys that earlier in the thread.
Right, but you can see where the confusion might come from. If he won it from his play last year, his roster designation and depth chart position would normally be changed in the off-season.
Regarding his behavior…Passion can easily be confused for a lot of different emotions in type.
I’ve treated you guys with respect in this thread and expect the same.
Right, but it IS the internet. You should assume that some people are going to act like they are on the internet no matter what you expect.
I personally prefer to have the respect of others, but I don’t expect it on an internet forum. I know some will be intelligent and respectful, and others will be complete idiots.
I still want to know how you think that Shiancoe is a bum?
I mean, he was a backup until he got to the Vikings. Struggled early and has since put up excellent numbers.
Better than Dustin Keller, and you don’t hear me calling him a bum.
Shank played in 16 games per year, he had targets, he had catches.
I’m just saying that he’s been getting praise ever since Favre came like he’s the best TE in the league and he’s not. He benefited from Favre best year in the NFL and so far it’s looking like he isn’t having another year like that again which means neither will Shank.
As for you thinking he’s better then Keller, that’s a fair argument. I’m sure plenty people would agree with you since Keller hasn’t had the exposure Shank has and for the simple fact that people love to hate the Jets and their players. Unfortunately for your claim the proof is in the numbers and Keller has been outperforming not only Shancoe but nearly every other TE in the league. So right now, as of week 5 in the NFL season, Dustn Keller is better than Shank. It’s all about production, names don’t mean a thing.

Hardly anybody even knew Shiancoe's name outside of Vikings fans until he made his lockeroom appearance on TV.
As for numbers Shank and Keller have both put up similar yardage and reception totals the last two years although Shank has had more TDs. This year Keller is off to a great start and I personally think he’s your best weapon in the passing game right now. I’d rate both Keller and Shank in the top 10-12 TEs in the league. There’s three or four TEs who are elite and guys like Shank and Keller are in a fairly large pack that’s gaining on the Clark, Gates, and Gonzalez club. Just a suggestion but if you want us to give respect to Jets players you might want to extend some to our players too.
by CanadianViking on Oct 8, 2010 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions
He was a good tight end before Favre got here.
In 2008 we had the deadly combination of Gus Frerrotte and Tavaris Jackson under center. In that season, Shiancoe put up over 14 yards per reception and 7 TD’s.
So explain to me how Favre had anything to do with Shiancoe getting praise? He actually had a 4 yard per reception drop off when Favre showed up, so if anything Favre has hurt his production.
Just because he played in 16 games a year in NY does not mean he was on the field enough to be able to judge his talent level based on stats. He was the backup tight end behind Jeremy Shockey on a team that rarely used a 2 tight-end set in the passing game.
I freaking HATED Shiancoe the first year he was a Viking, he dropped a lot of passes in ’07 and was a big reason Tjack got benched in ’08. But he turned it around and has had VERY solid hands and been very productive ever since. Hardly a bum.
That said, Keller’s ability as a tight end has nothing to do with his exposure or the fact that people love to hate Jets players.
I will say as of right now, Keller has put up some very good numbers. But he has to put up good numbers for more than 4 games in order for the claim that he is a better TE than Shiancoe to hold water.
Let’s not forget that young QB’s favor the tight end because it is a solid safety valve if the opposing defense is giving you some complicated looks. Sanchez is still learning, and will still favor the tight end over the receivers because of his inexperience.
I am not knocking Keller, but I am saying that your comparison of the two is off-base and Shiancoe is hardly a bum.
Ted would never get out of NY alive . And Gonzo is busy saluting Uncle Sam or Ms. Gonzo from what I gather . Hee Hee .

To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
Cromartie did a very good job covering Moss.
Heck, Moss had to push off just to get separation on that TD pass.
Good job jets
Your D was formidable, and LT was a beast unleashed. Good luck on your journey to a superbowl I hope injuries don’t hold you back. Oh yeah and I’ll trade you our entire o line for yours. Got to say it, trust a fat man to pick a good o line…
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
D did it's job
but Jets took advantage of Shillys lack of imagination in the 1st half and critical errors.
It just makes me wonder-if we score 30 in the 2nd half by playing all your key guys, even withstanding penalties and turnovers, Would the Vikes have at least been able to a couple field goals or TD and this might have been a different game.
Not taking away from the Jets but for once I agree with Collinsworth, why do you have a pass 1st built offense and run one guy the entire 1st half.
Rex is a smart guy but I’be said it B4, most HS coaches could figure out what Chilly is going to do
