Bill Parcells Could 'Do This One More Time'...in Minnesota?
I haven't seen the documentary on Bill Parcells on the NFL Network, but at the end of it, he's apparently quoted as saying:
"Get me back out there," Parcells says near the end of Bill Parcells: Reflections on a Life in Football, per Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post. "I can do this one more time. That’s how I feel."
Fact: I love Bill Parcells...in a non-sexual, hero worship kind of way.
Fact: Zygi Wilf, a life long Giants fan before he bought the Vikes, has that feeling towards Parcells time one gajillion. One gajiullion is a lot, by the way.
Fact: I want Brad Childress to have a wonderful life. I just don't want him to do it as coach of the Minnesota Vikings, effective yesterday.
Fact: The Vikings need some sort of press...in a positive way...to try and get some momentum going towards a new stadium. If you're not aware, the football abortion that we are forced to watch on an almost weekly basis is what we like to call 'anti momentum'.
Fact: Bill Parcells has a full head of hair and the coolest nickname ever, and is a quote machine at press conferences. Oh, and he knows football.
Fact: Brad Childress is bald, and his nickname of 'Chilly' is twofold--he cools off a hot football team and has a personality of an ice cube. Oh, and he doesn't know football.
Fact: If the Vikings lose this weekend, Brad Childress might get fired before he gets back to the locker room.
Not Fact, but more of a football masturbatory fantasy: Bill Parcells becomes the VIkings coach by nightfall.
Discuss.

Too willing to give up
He has a habit of quitting when he’s bored. Haven’t we done the past their prime thing enough with Farve?
And?
Look at his record. Everywhere he goes he makes the team better. Giants, Jets, Pats, Cowboys, Miami. And that success usually continues after he leaves because he builds successful organizations.
So he comes to Minnesota, stays for 2-3 years to build us up and leaves us better for it. Good for us.
YES!
The “Tuna”? You betcha, by golly. Would be super to have a coach that knows how to lead his team to championships. Always thought Parcells was one of the best minds in football. And knows how to get the most from his players. That would be a total 180 from Colonel Klink. HIRE HIM, ZIGGY!
I voted no for 2 reasons.
1. He hasn’t won a superbowl since the giants.
2. Most importantly I’m a bears fan………

He wouldn't be a coach
He would be more of a football czar type if he were to come there. I don’t think he really wants to be on the sidelines anymore, rather just build the team from on high and get one of his minions to do the grunt work of coaching.
So basically do for the Vikings what he’s done in Miami.
For the record I wouldn’t want to see that or him coaching the Vikings….
Yeah
Lets not have him do what he did in Miami. Took a 1-15 loser and turned them to 11-5 and won the AFC East.
Can’t have that in Minnesota. We like losing.
man this would be awesom
Parcells is a real man, who will command the respect from the vikings players. get this done vikes. This could be a great opportunity for this team!!!
It's funny...
I believe the week he cleaned out his office at the Dolphins facility is when everything in Miami went South. Coincidence??? I think not!!!
If we are going to hire someone like Leslie Frazier as our next head coach then if I was sitting in Zygi and Mark Wilf’s chairs I’d at least make a call to gauge the Tuna’s interest in overseeing a retooling of our team. This would be Frazier’s first head coaching job and might need some guidance.
Now if Gruden expressed an interest (which I doubt but we can hope right?) we can’t have two alpha dogs at Winter Park.
Bears vs. Vikings Tickets - $150
Beer and food for 24 tailgate bus trip - More than $150

SKOL Vikings!!!!
No way a GM has that kind of impact on the week to week of a team
However, it could be that like some brand-name CEOs in corporate America, he jumped ship when he saw that things were going to go badly for the company/team. Otherwise his departure and Miami’s struggles are coincidental.
I'd really like it.
He’s a no BS kind of guy and even though he coached the stupid Cowboys, I’ll forgive him. If he wants to coach a team with an established amount of talent, he’ll be right at home in Minny.
I'm still a Minnesotan at heart...
i would pass on parcells
the team is nowhere what he would want. he would want a ground and pound offense and a nasty, get your face defense with alot more man coverage. that would mean the entire secondary would be released, the wideouts would have to be changed, havin would most likely end up a 2nd wr instead of a slot where he is best at. and even the LB’s might be in jeopardy. then after getting the team the way he wanted…….he would start the retirement talk again. i would take gruden though. same firey attitude but would like the personel we have in place for the most part.
Good things come to those who keep fighting
I agree
Parcells is a great football guy, but stylistically, a lot of what he does is counter to how the Vikings are built, particularly on defense. Unless we have the stomach to basically acquire a new front 7 (plus a cover corner or two), this probably isn’t the way to go.
I would love parcells...
But Gruden would definitely be my first choice… Keep the team in Minnesota please… I would take anyone not named Chilly at this point. Whoever it is will need to find us a great Qb as soon as he comes in. Favre is done after this year Maybe we trade for Kolb or draft someone like Luck or Lockler.
dont need kolb
After favre leaves we should draft Mallet and another rookie qb. I personally like the young qb from Arkansas also. then have jackson, webb, mallet and the arkansas qb duke it out for starting qb.
I think I'd rather have him in the front office
The Vikings currently have too many cooks in the kitchen—nobody’s really sure who has power to do what. I’d like to see Parcells be THE guy that makes all the football decisions for Minnesota. It’s looking like there will be a lot of new faces on this team next year, and I would like to see Parcells pick who those new faces are.

Well...
Parcells has never really built a team for long term. He kind of always brings in his retreads to make a run but never quite gets there. The only SB victory he has was not a team he drafted or built. NY was built by old George their GM.
Our FO is fine. Get rid of Chilly and it improves dramatically. 2 ROY’s plus Jared Allen in the last for years with our first round picks. Last year, not sure what happened but I think we missed out on Tebow and simply traded away our pick to get Chris Cook who we wanted in the 2nd round.
Other than this year, which most of us wanted Favre back, there has been a great plan to build this team. There have been a few mistakes, Madieu, letting Sharper go, letting Chester go, not doing something about the O line, QB of future, but you can’t fix everything in one year.
I am for a new coach, maybe Parcells, but would rather have Cowher or Gruden before him.
speaking of o-line
does it seem to you that our problems all started when birk left? i think he was more valueable than people realize. even with our high-octane offense last year, our o-line was the weak link.
by indianavikesfan on Nov 19, 2010 9:32 AM CST up reply actions
Agreed
Might have made the difference in the championship game. The blocking schemes called at the line failed and that would have been Birk’s responsibility.
Would we want to move to a 3-4 Defense?
I think it would take a couple years to get the personnel in place. Kevin Williams would have to move to DE. Pat may be getting too old to play the nose. I do not see Jared Allen being a very good linebacker. And he definitely couldn’t play on the line.
And seeing our secondary play anything but Cover 2 would be hard to watch.

No. Stick with the 4-3.
The Vikings have played very well in the 4-3 until this year. No reason to switch.
Can't agree here
The short/ medium pass coverage is pretty sad by the linebackers – EJ is not great especially. Great tackler/run stop – pass, not so much.
Leber and Greenway are good in coverage though, which usually makes up for Henderson. Honestly, though I think most of the coverage problems are directly related to the safety play. Williams may be one of the worst safties in football this season. Hasn’t been able to cover, hasn’t been good in run support, and has taken terrible angles all season long.

I see Parcels as the guy who comes to a sinking ship
retools the entire thing and makes it a winning program. I don’t think we need that in Minnesota. He’s more of a fixer up guy than a stand and deliver. At least that is my opinion. When he went to the Cowboys he took a miserable team and brought it up into contention. He then did the same thing for the Dolphins, I think that’s where he finds his enjoyment. Now I CAN see him going someplace like Carolina.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

I would be all in for Parcells being a part of the Vikings organization in any capacity: head coach, general manager, president, special adviser, guy who hires our coach, etc.
He’s got a great record in football no matter what his title has been, and we need some of that mojo now. And I love the fact that he is as non-PC as you can be.
I like to think anyone will be better than Childress but it would be nice to set our sights higher than that. And I have to say the thought of Leslie Frazier being our next head coach doesn’t excite me at all. He actually seems sort of Childress-like with the penchant to never say anything useful and the taking credit for a unit that was as good if not better before he arrived.
the biggest benefactor of Parcells coaching our team would be Adrian Peterson. Parcells would likely change our zone-blocking scheme to a style more suitable to our roadgraters of an o-line, (wish we still had Birk) AP would be able to put up even more astounding numbers. i am not sure what type of blocking scheme Parcells ran with his former teams, but i’m possitive that he is smart enough to realize our linemen’s strength and weaknesses, unlike our current coaches.

I'll have the Tuna, PLEASE
yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, been my dream coach/gm/talent scout/draft co-ordinator since he first left the giants! Zigi, make this happen & within 3 yrs the superbowl win which has eluded the vikings for so long will be over.
I wouldn't even vote yes or no...
… because it ought to be viewed against other potential coaches. Parcells is old, and hasn’t always succeeded either. It is intriguing if it happened. But, what about Cowher, or Frazier, or Billick? I am not entirely sure that Parcells would be the best option, and at any rate rather than jumping at the first guy you think you want, like Wilf did with Childress, he needs to consider all possibilities carefully.

I agree I hope Childress gets fired...
… and I am hoping they are just waiting to make sure they can locate all his keys, team gear, and any whistles that might be in his possession.
We need the laminated play sheet he carries on game day too. Everything.
Once all the items belonging to the team are in his possession, and all his computer passwords are changed, then change the locks and wish him the best.

Tuna brings his own drama
…which I don’t think I can handle. I doubt he wants to be head coach. He said as much when he left the Cowboys. Holmgren wasn’t into coaching any more either. I think at their age (and weight) it might be a health consideration as much as anything. Being a headcoach is a very unhealthy lifestyle for five months of the year.
TUNA!!!!!!!!!!!!
You know he’d win, since that is what he does, but even if he didn’t it would be fun just to guess where his belt line was going to be for each game. (I love the Tuna!)
Please keep Chilly...he's the Best and Bightest mind in all of football

Two Points
1) As much as people say the Vikings Front Office has drafted well, and then cite our studs AD, Harvin, Greenway, even Ray Edwards and Rice (hurt 3 out of 4 years though), BUT look at how many BAD picks they have made:
- Tyrell Johnson, 2nd round
- Asher Allen, 3rd
- Loadholt, 2nd (jury still out, but playing BAD this year)
- TJack, 2nd (I’m still hoping, but time is running out)
- Chris Cook, 2nd (lot of injuries early, no big plays yet)
- Ryan Cook (ugh)
- TRADED a TON (1st and 3rd) for Jared Allen (last year this looked good, now not so much)
So all in all, I would argue our drafts have been top heavy with a few elite playmakers and after that pretty weak. Your thoughts?
2) All that said, I would not bring on Parcells. His performance with teams has gotten worse and worse:
- Giants: 2 SB
- Pats, 1 SB LOST
- Jets 1 AFC Champ LOST
- Cowboys lost in 2nd round
- Miami lost iin 1st round, now looking like a bad team
He is a very egotistical guy, has a “my way or the highway” approach, and hasn’t won anything in 20 years. Sounds a lot like the guy we want out of here.
(and this is coming from a guy who rooted for the Giants when they won the SB as a kid when I lived in NJ)
I agree with you on #2.
Parcell’s strength is taking a bottom-feeder and making it solid where I think we’d be better served with a coach like Gruden who takes talent and pushes it over the top. I think we’re a team that needs some retooling but we’re not in total rebuild mode yet as we still have a lot of talent even though some of it is underperforming this year.
For your first point I agree with you about many of our 2nd and 3rd round picks being of the mediocre variety instead of standouts. The thing about the draft is that close to half of all draft picks don’t ever become starters or quality backups, let alone stars, so the benchmark for draft success is fairly low. Many teams have numerous picks that don’t even manage to stay in the league, so compared to most of the league our drafting is very good because even the players you noted as mediocre picks have contributed and are at least going to be NFL roster players.

Yeah, I was looking at the Packers draft history the other day and then decided to look at the Vikings afterwards. Seems like they’ve hit on a lot of early round picks but haven’t had many hits in the later rounds aside from Edwards.
