Vikings Take 2010 Season, Tie It To A Tree, And Shoot It Multiple Times

Pretty much sums it up. (Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images)

Hey, remember back when I said the Vikings would get their record to 7-3?

Well. . .I got the numbers right, at least.

Feel free to commiserate here, ladies and gentlemen. There will certainly be much more on this as the week goes along, particularly if there's any justice and we're talking about Head Coach Leslie Frazier here in a couple of days. Not that that's going to make any difference, considering that our defense now sucks every bit as hard as our offense.

Me? I'll be parked here in front of the Red Zone Channel, laughing at internet tough guys that have nothing else in their lives but football, and relaxing. Discuss the aftermath of this one, the late games. . .hell, discuss whatever you want right here.

Changes.

At what point do we start making personnel changes? Shift people around, correct mistakes, do something.

D-Line isn’t getting it done. O-line consistent penalties. QB play sketchy from day 1. Secondary getting burned on IDENTICAL mishaps all day.

These are isolated incidents… ALL SEASON LONG. What exactly is our coaching staff waiting for?

by solafide on Nov 21, 2010 3:22 PM CST up reply actions

I say try to find one in the draft

By all indications we’ll be rebuilding next season anyway. No point in bringing in a vet to waste their remaining good years on a rebuilding team.

What do the BCS & Brad Childress have in common? Both must go.

by Td1984 on Nov 21, 2010 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

TJack can play well, he did so at the end of 2008 when he had a shot.

But right now, we have NO idea where’s he’s at. We need to put him in, and see how he does.

At this rate though, we’ll be shooting for a very high pick in the draft, maybe we can snag a good QB early on.

by loldotcom on Nov 21, 2010 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

Well, now that we're out of it

He wasn't put in with 0:28 to go.

Why?

Just let him get some snaps, Favre is a dead project at this point.

by loldotcom on Nov 21, 2010 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

Or Colt McCoy

He’s doing a decent job against some very tough teams.

by loldotcom on Nov 21, 2010 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah I'm pretty upset about us not picking him up.

Although I would prefer getting a QB after Childress has been removed I’m not sure we can handle him molding another QB for this team…

Whats crazy is that Childress came in with the reputation of being a QB coach kinda guy. Yet the only one they really ever had him try to groom was Tjack…I would have thought they would bring in a few more, maybe some that weren’t so raw.

by TrevorR on Nov 21, 2010 11:09 PM CST up reply actions

He hasn't gotten much playing time, to be honest.

Rodgers has been durable, especially last year, when he was getting pounded week in and week out.

That being said, I think some teams would want a QB like Flynn on their roster.

I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

I suggested that back in September. As you can see though, I just couldn’t come up with a scenarios for how it would happen. I think Packers trade him in offseason, and then he gets an extension, before he becomes a free agent.

by puddnhead on Nov 21, 2010 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

That is the Packer way from the Wolf era so its not completely impossible. He hasn’t shown a ton in the season (thankfully) but he’s looked nice in limited time.

Unbelileveable

How can a team with so much talent, play so bad.. At least there will be 1 bright spot. Childress will not be head coach next yr. I also think we should clean house. Bring in new head coach and let him bring in all new coaches. Def has gotten worse as year as went along. At least we blitz some in 1st half and had me believing we would win today. As the old saying goes..Turn out the lights, the party is over. And with 6 games left too. Really unbelievable

I bought tix for the Bills game..

But sold them on Friday night to a friend.
I bought them to get a chance to go to a game w/ a better view than I had gone before.
I bought them after they signed Randy Moss mid-season
I bought them when they had a legitimate chance for post-season.

They released R. Moss and I was already contemplating selling them, they have been playing poorly and I was still thinking of selling…

I figured, if I sold them, I would likely regret it…
Could I still be right?
I feel that I made a pretty good decision and still came out ahead profit wise.

I know we’re all thinking.. This loss will be a blessing in disguise (Or so we hope) really depends on if Zygi pulls the trigger and releases Childress.

Overall, in my opinion, this whole season for most, if not all teams has been pretty messy. The AFC is the only conference w/ a little bit of consistency…

Plus, you'll get to blend in with all the Favre fans who drift back to the Packers at the end of the year.

But seriously, stick with your team. Bad times make the good times all that much more fun. I spent the first 18 years of my Packer fan-dom wondering if they’d ever make the playoffs in a non-strike year. Then the 90’s came, and it’s pretty much been a party ever since. There have been some rough times, but the good times make ’em worth it.

Yup

Unless you are the Detroit Lions, or post-1994 Buffalo BIlls…or Houston Texans…Cincinatti Bengals, for that matter…going from a disastrous season to a Super Bowl contender is a matter of a couple seasons and a few good personnel moves.

The Vikings can rebuild quickly—it is the whole point of the draft, free agency, and salary cap.

Teams like the Steelers and Patriots who are at least competitive every year are the real anomalies in this system.

Cali bud

The whole thing sucks. Despite poor O-line play I say AGAIN times where Favre, even at his age, could have run and slid for a 1st down. Instead he threw garbage. Jax or Webb would have gotten 10-20 yards and kept things moving.
I noted to a friend that I saw the huddle break and it was like " are we done. Can we have lunch now?"
Pathetic attitude which rests on the coaching atmosphere.
Favre could have made choices to to run and gain, but didn’t. I would rather see the guy just hang it up. Save the Vikes $., then let Webb and jax have a regular season evaluation for the future.
Bob Lurtsama noted how good Ryan Perriloux looked in FA tryouts. Bring him in as a 3rd til we draft or sign a replacement. -I KNOW Ain’t gonna happen.
We go after established O-lines in free agency. We give Leslie temporayr reign and see how it turns out. Make the decision based on what mentality he brings to the team. One on the brink..
Lets draft a decent QB.
We have the players. We just need to see which ones will buck it up. We lost our 3rd pick so just dumping guys is not a good option. Fill needs in FA and draft and dump the dead meat from that point

And how many times was Favre hit or hurried or sacked today…too many. That Offensive line all needs work and no matter who you start, they’re gonna need a lot more than just some fast feet. So

Your going to criticize him for showing the team respect and attempting to be a class act?
I am sure if you really heard what was on his mind, he would be scrutinized.

Let’s say Favre thought this & said it.. “It was the play calling… We couldn’t execute the plays and we need more creativity. The defense needs to step it up and we need some of our offensive players to step up and make plays. Looking back at our season, it would of been helpful to have Rice back for the whole season.. blah blah blah blah blah…” Imagine if his words related to that?

Yes, Favre is going to basically spit his words to show class….. By talking for the team and giving the other team credit for playing good when we ‘lose’.

I don’t have a problem with his conference at all but the time for “needing to play better as a team” has come and gone. It’s nice to sit here and say that for 10 weeks over and over but unless you do it, talk is cheap.

he has played this way from the start of the season. He does not have the same commanding presence he had last year. I’m afraid the ass-kicking he received in NFCCG has had a lasting impact.

by Mel Allen on Nov 21, 2010 3:58 PM CST up reply actions

I think it did, but not in the way you think.

I think that game exposed Favre as a non-mobile QB who, when pressured, loses his accuracy and is liable to throw a pick. So now the rest of the league knows how to play him – and with the O Line playing poorly, any decent defense should be able to beat the Vikes on any given day.

by Jurp on Nov 22, 2010 9:59 AM CST up reply actions

Not really

It is not that puzzling, its pressure. Last season, teams tried to lay back because they feared Farve hitting a deep pass on them or AP breaking a long run. So they played more of a contain defense. This season, they are not playing a contain defense. They are playing a pressure defense. So Farve goes back and he does not have the amount of time to scan the field like he did previously. He has to get the ball out and he doesn’t have anyone to really get the ball to. When the team brought Moss in, there was fear in the defenses again and the team offense started to jell. Moss have a few tds, Harvin and AP were starting to click. The offense would have really jelled by now. However, Childress took this team back to week 3 and this is what you get.

So the blame for this season is really in the hands of Childress and Wilf. How many points did the Vikings put on Green Bay in Green Bay. It wasn’t a coincidence that we had Moss on the field for that game. Today, no Moss, no real deep threat, Packers pressure and offense doesn’t exist any more.

As far as the Viking defense, they did not play that bad. The Packers have a good offense, you know they are going to move the ball, they are going to put some points on the board. Anyway, I do not think it is all Farve’s fault, but Childress needs to go.

by Tnshow_knoxville on Nov 21, 2010 4:12 PM CST up reply actions

There's a lot of truth in this.

Rice was back today and there were some plays there to be made, but it didn’t happen. If Rice had been healthy all year this wouldn’t be a 3-7 team.

BCB free since 8/24/10 and happier for it.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Nov 21, 2010 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

It has just been a comedy of errors for this team this year when you think about it. When it was announced Rice would be out. The Vikes brought in Javon Walker. Who I thought had done pretty well in the preseason and he already had chemistry with Walker. However, Childress cuts him before the season starts.

Then, there was such excitement surrounding the team when Moss came back. The team signs him right when they were heading into their rough stretch. Even, with the team coming out and being 2-5 and I knew the rough stretch was over. There was so many positives that were starting to happen. Childress blows that up.

I have a hard time blaming Farve for everything because he is playing with two broken bones in his foot, elbow problems and shoulder problems. However, I have no problems in blaming Childress for obvious errors.

Remember the pump fakes, the second and third looks he would make on the field, faking defenses out of their cleats? NONE of that has taken place this season. It is puzzling.

Ummm … just exactly how puzzling can it be that he’s not doing second and third looks, when he doesn’t have time to do them?

Really Mel Allen, this isn’t exactly rocket science. Don’t be so obtuse.

rice has a contract year too, he mailed it in for nine games. blame on his doctor too yes, but cmon he could’ve played last week and given us a shot. aside from harvin, ap, kluwe, and a couple other guys, I don’t see many people playing with the heart from last year. defensive front four is dormant, secondary is atrocious, o-line can’t do anything. if courage is what you show in the face of adversity, most of our players fail big time.

by killerk968 on Nov 21, 2010 3:58 PM CST reply actions

Some of you must have beer goggles on...

Favre was horrible today..You see all the over throws..Throwing into double coverage…He is lucky he didnt have 3-4 picks…Its over for this team…Time to shift gears and like I said on another blog get some reps for the young guys especially tjack and see if we wanna resign him and move forward with him as starting QB….Childress and Bevell still make the worst play calls..I dont know how many times they keep running to the middle and get stuffed..Some of you are so blinded by Favre you dont wanna actually see the game through unbiased eyes..Anyone who says there is still a chance is crazy….Favre was not good today…Abdullah was bad to..Blew lots of coverage..Im in the process of watching the game tape right now..For those hating on OLINE they gave up 1 sack all game to a team who blitzs 75% of the time..You cant expect DBs to hold coverage for 15secs with the opposing QB running around the pocket…You also cannot expect Cook or Allen to cover Jennings 1 on 1..Rodgers is good enough to make those reads everytime..Face it my beloved team is BAD this year…

Have todisagree on one thing. Fave was missing throws, throwing into double coverage.
Not just him. Did you see the huddles. No umphh! Came out like they were uninspired by anything. Goes to the Coaching.
For the future and Favres health. Bench him. Gorget this streak. No one cares and there is one guy ahead of him he will not catch. Losing to prolong astreak is retarded

but, sadly, this team has not been in a position all season to pound it relentlessly. I can’t remember a lead being larger than 7 all year.

Season in retrospect from a suffering 29 y/o fan, whose 1st memory is of darren nelson

Might go a little long hereso bear with me.
Lets start with good ole number 4, forget everything we did last year and everything this guy did in the years past, we are talking about a 41 y/o beat up former shell of himself. wh owhile yes he can throw it still with the best of them there is something wrong, dont know what it is but its something major. If it wasnt for his name he wouldve been benched weeks ago,(no i dontblame him for still playing thats a coaches desicion to make).
OL had its moments both good and bad overall its a wash
DL had NO moments whatso ever this whole season( dont bring up the ARZ game- the last 45 sec and Ot dont count in my book-). We play overall a cover2 system which is predicated on getting to the QB with our front 4, blitzing too much doesnt help, cause a decent QB can find the open guy in a blitzing cover2. and yes i blame everyone for this failure from 69-93-94-91(who doesnt deserve a big contract after this year can spend it better then on him) and to fraizer for not realizing this. Im sorry to say but everyone who has jumped on the frazier band wagon is hope misplaced, besides for last year when we harrased the opposing QBS non stop are secondary usually placed midpack or towards the bottom of the league.
thats it for now my fingers are hurting be back later to continue.
p.s. excuse me for spelling/grammer/ punctation errors, very pissed off right now.

by bleed purple and gold on Nov 21, 2010 4:13 PM CST reply actions

Hey!

AP shouldn’t be sat on until there is a lead. He can GET you a lead or help you catch up.

Until a team is down 3 TDs that guy should be the focus of the offense.

He’s arguably the best offensive player in the NFC. It’s insane to me that the Vikes forget about him during games. Absolutely insane.

The thing is,

Does firing a coach in midseason lead to a team playing worse or better? Clearly, Dallas is playing better now with Garrett as HC.

Open question: would firing Childress and hiring, say, Frazier, make the Vikings play better, worse, or about the same?

I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

Worse is hard to imagine but at this point I’m willing to try anything to find signs of life for next year. Make the move for Frazier as interim head coach.

I'm cutlassbob, and I approved this message.

by cutlassbob on Nov 21, 2010 6:37 PM CST up reply actions

You would be evaluating the coach on an interim basis

You see if the problem lies in leadership. You get a jump on what moves need to be made to fix a sinking ship

by CitrusFLViking on Nov 21, 2010 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

Depends on who's the Offensive Coordinator

If it’s still Bevell, then I don’t think anything’s going to change re playcalling, and it’s awfully hard to change a Defensive philosophy in mid-season. And with Frazier as coach, I don’t think he’d want to anyway. Bottom Line – maybe they’ll play harder, but the playcalling and D will remain the same.

by Jurp on Nov 22, 2010 10:08 AM CST up reply actions

Favre will probably be happier, word on the street is that Frazier is a players coach who actually listens and takes advice from his players. Something Childress never did (which is why Moss was so pissed and why he and Favre had such a rift between them).

Well, then, allow me to tell you

As someone that’s been a fan of this team for 27 seasons (counting this one).

Hoping for a team to fail because you don’t like one of their players is juvenile, and makes you a crappy fan.

Did we all hate Brett Favre when he was in Green Bay? Yep, we sure did. . .and I was probably at the head of that line. But hey, you know. . .he’s our team’s quarterback. And you know what I like more than watching the Vikings play football? Watching the Vikings win.

I don’t cheer for Brett Favre or Adrian Peterson or Randy Moss or Jared Allen. . .I cheer for the Minnesota Vikings, and whoever the front office deems to put on the roster to support those efforts. Hell, if Charles Manson can catch a slant pass, sign his ass up and line him up next to Harvin.

But in 27 seasons, I have never once cheered for this team to lose. I’ve cheered for the Packers or the Bears or whoever to lose, but since the Vikings are my favorite team, the thought of hoping that they lose makes me physically ill.

Yep

We’ve got a faction like that, too. . .I like to think of them as the “Ol’ 98ers”. . .meaning they jumped on in 1998 and haven’t been happy since.

A lot of these same people are still pissed at Randy Moss not being here. . .you know, the guy that has one catch in two games as a member of the Tennessee Titans. (Don’t get me wrong. . .I’m not happy about the Moss thing, either. . .but I’m more pissed at the fact that it cost us a third-round pick to “figure out” that Moss is done than the fact that he’s no longer on the roster.)

Hell, the first season I was a fan of this team was, quite possibly, the worst team in Vikings’ history. . .the Les Steckel disaster of 1984. If I was going to bail on this team, that’s when I would have done it. (-:

Couple of thoughts

As long as Moss draws double coverage, he is opening up the field for the other players on the team. I do not think he is washed up at all. I believe he had a couple of touchdowns with the Vikings this year before the idiot Head Coach cut him. I, also, believe the offense was just starting to click when we release him as well. However, as the Head Coach said, we do not need him. As far as losing a 3rd round pick, yep, that is about as stupid as it can get.

Now, I have been a fan since the early 70’s so as far as bad seasons, I think this is by far the worst that I have seen. The Steckel year was terrible; however, the expectations that year were not to be in the Super Bowl. Nor did that team have the talent that this team has. So in many ways, this may be the worst season that I have seen this team have.

Randy Moss

In two weeks in Tennessee has a total of one catch.

Sidney Rice had more catches than that today after missing all of training camp and the first nine games of the season.

Yes.

“Maybe fans should die rooting for the teams they were born closest to. Maybe we should not choose them, they choose us.”

Not at all. I know people who choose to be fans of teams located a long ways from where they live, even when there’s a relatively local team. I’ve got no problem with that.

What I have no respect for, what I regard as pathetic, is a guy who chooses, and then chooses again when his first choice becomes inconvenient. I don’t give you shit because you’re a Viking fan (partly because I don’t think you really are a Viking fan). I give you shit because you’re a turncoat, and because you try to create some of kind of new mythology and ethos that makes the decision to turn coat the noble, ethical and moral choice, instead of the weak-minded one it is.

Hey, it’s just football. I don’t like what I see of you, but in all other, and far more important aspects, you might be a nice guy. But I am sort of glad I’ll never find out based on what I see of you around here.

What’s more pathetic? A guy who gets hacked off at an article you wrote over here saying the Bears were the best team in the division and vents somewhere else? Or the guy who goes and finds that content and points it out to you in the middle of a conversation where we agree on something? But, do whatever you want over there, that’s an issue between you and acme folks like cheeseancorn, who I see wrote this:

I’m getting annoyed by the constant fixation on that site in the posts and comments here. I’m totally fine with tweaking a bitter rival, but it’s been getting a little bit ridiculous in the past few weeks, especially since the Vikings are 3-6 and out of serious playoff contention. I guess I like this site better when it’s much more a Packers blog than an anti-Vikings blog.

But that’s his problem, not mine. I have, and will continue to, stay out of your discussions at Acme. And you aren’t a being a troll, here at DN. Just a two faced jerk that, once you find soft spots, likes to repeatedly, subtly, stick a knife in and twist it into one specific individual: me. You can keep doing if it gives you the jollies. Haters gotta hate. I have not called for your ban. All I am saying is, if you want to pretend over here that you aren’t trying to do it, you probably should not be bragging over there how you realize you do it, and how enjoyable it is. I even cheer for Asher Allen and Chris Cook.

I can totally understand why a fan of the Vikes doesn’t like or cheer for Favre. I don’t like him on my team. I didn’t want him on my team. He is the face if the enemy. How many years did you cuss as you watch #4 as he led the Packers to a win over the Vikes or laugh or cheer as he threw a pick and the Vikes secured a victory. Those feelings don’t just go away.
I know it’s a business. I know it is rare when a player stays on one team his whole career. But Favre isn’t just another player. He isn’t Ryan Longwell. He is the face of the Packers. He has a damn street named after him in our rivals home town.
When they signed him I was Pissed, The fact no one has the balls to do what is best for the long term growth of this team has me pissed as well. Whether you are a Farve fan or not, you need to ask your self honestly this question, What will allow my favorite team to win the Super Bowl as soon as possible? Is it leaving Favre starting with the same supporting cast hoping that they can regroup and salvage the 2010 season, (I think we are all in agreement he isn’t coming back next year) or is it figuring out if there is a QB on the roster that can win?
I guessing because I don’t know but at some point during the preseason Childress and Wilf agreed that Favre and not Jackson or Rosenfeld gave the Vikings the best chance to win the Big One. Now that the Super Bowl is out of the question they need to ask, Who is the best QB to lead the team to a win? Is it Farve? or someone else?
So what do I do? I cheer for my team. I cheer for the other 52 players, most of whom are working their butts off.

Shit - I have tickets to the Vikes-Skins game

Was a great plan Thanksgiving weekend way back when I thought we’d have a great season…bought them the day we announced Randy was a Viking…remember all the promise and hope that news brought. What happened to the mojo or magic from then and last year. It was fun when we had it at the end of the Arizona game, But it’s been missing most of this season and not sure where to look to find it. I know everyone is calling for Childress’ head but I really think we’re nit-pickin at some systemic problems with this team. Yes it all starts with the coach, then the QB and then the rest of the critical posiitions. I see huge holes on offense and on defense. Special Team is about the brightest spot on this team….what a surprise but at least they seem to show up every game. Not sure what the anwer is but this one stings.

We are witnessing the same phenomenon with Favre. He looks great, gets himself into great shape (they were saying in the offseason that he put on 17 pounds AND his waist is smaller OR he is running the steps at a local stadium.) but looking back, you could tell Ali was a little…off, but everyone wanted to believe that he had re-captured the magic from the late 60’s.

Few people remember that Ali fought a couple more times after that Holmes beating, too. It was sad, in a lot of ways, watching that Ali documentary, because not only did Ali get crushed, but larry ZHolmes was wrongly villified, in many ways, for just doing what he was supposed to do—beat an opponent.

And he went out of his way to try and not embarrass Ali, but there was little he could do. Ali was just done.

However, I would like to see some younger talent get in and get reps… Last year back-ups were in frequently.. Apparently, this year we haven’t had a chance to do that.

We started off great defensively even with Frazier saying that he thought we had a lot of talent and depth on our D. Than we started to trade some of it away… Same w/ CBs and what not as some of our players were getting hurt and we were finding ourselves short at those positions (I.e., Griffin, Cook, etc).

Team has quit

The firing of Childress has to happen. It will continue to get worst as long as he is the head coach. This team has quit. Need to make a change to Frazier and let him be the interim Head Coach to see if the players react any different than they did today. If not, then, at least, you know Frazier is not the answer. However, standing pat and continuing to make excuses is just unacceptable. Jerry Jones saw the writing on the wall and made the change. Now, the Cowboys have rolled off two wins.

by Tnshow_knoxville on Nov 21, 2010 4:39 PM CST reply actions

Interesting………..

It did look like the team quit a few times out there. Who was anonymous Viking that said the team wouldn’t quit like the Cowboys did, he’s a liar.

You do have a point. In the short and long term, there needs to be a change. The coaching philosophies aren’t working, the players aren’t responding and the team is lost to everyone that doesn’t work for the Viking Organization.

agree

They also had someone to promote. WE don’t. Bevell and a Chilli shadow and the offense will stay the same the the defense has gotten worse not better. It will take an outside guy,. DUNGY , TUNA. Just hoping for guys that could evaluate and turn this thing around in a hurry

by ZygiZag on Nov 21, 2010 4:46 PM CST up reply actions

They have showed signs of packing it in for a few weeks now

I still point to the first Packer game as the sign that they were going to start giving up. It only takes one person and then manifests its way to the whole team.

by SeanInEauClaireWi on Nov 21, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

Couldn't have said it better myself Knoxville.

Let’s see if the team will respond for Frazier. Got nothing to lose now. Are only real chance was to beat Da Bears & the Pack . That ship has sailed, actually it think it was motorized. Throw Tjack in also, at least he can run. It will be for his life but he can run. We got 6 games to see who is going to make the effort. Cut Chilly’s head off now & we can axe the rest of the ones who don’t want to make an effort at seasons end. Just cut Berrian . No need to wait on that guy.

by iowaron on Nov 21, 2010 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

I don’t know. Jenkins and Raji were having a field day in the middle. The pocket seemed to collapse on Favre nearly every play.

by packallday555 on Nov 21, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

Im not saying i want him running for his life

but the ability to escape pressure and make things happen slows down the passrush AND helps the OLine.

by Marcus.Grayson on Nov 21, 2010 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

So let Tjack run. Favre's a stationary target. He's not going to run.

Let Jenkins & Raji chase Tjack around. I’ll bet after he busts a couple plays they won’t be so eager to just pin there ears back. Favre is done & the season is lost. Give Tarvaris his chance to prove or disprove what he can do.

by iowaron on Nov 21, 2010 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

Look at the Eagles

Not TJack is obviously not Vick, but the Eagles offense sure got better when he replaced Kolb. A mobile QB would seem to be a must with a crappy OLine.

by iowaron on Nov 21, 2010 8:07 PM CST up reply actions

Sorry, late to the party (did homework after my boy threw that pick)

First off, I am one of the biggest Favre apologists that there is. But I will officially go on record and say it is time. Time for Favre to pull the plug. I don’t like Jackson much, but I would rather see Jackson get whooped as he is younger and prove that the oline is a big problem. This team is quiting and it is only going to get uglier. I still will not blame everything on Favre as the whole team showed signs the last few weeks of packing it in. The coaches need to go, the oline needs to get revamped, and we need a qb of the future. Oh yeah, and that damn defense needs some work. But get off this shit that Favre is the true problem because if you say this, then you are about as blind as the BSPN crew. This goes much deeper than the quarterback play.

by SeanInEauClaireWi on Nov 21, 2010 4:43 PM CST reply actions

Your'e right is is more than just QB play.

Teams rally around the QB though. Remember the Cardinals game when Bret was on fire. The defense all of a sudden showed up when the offense showed signs of hope. These are NFL players they know how to play. When you have confidence your leader can win you the game it’s amazing how every player on the offense & the defense has a little more spring in their step. The talent on this team didn’t just suddenly disappear. When the coach sucks & Favre throws 3 picks a game it’s not exactly a rallying cry. Some new leadership & QB that isn’t hurt & washed up will go a long way in getting this team turned around.

by iowaron on Nov 21, 2010 8:27 PM CST up reply actions

Jackson may or may not be the answer

But it doesn’t matter, because he’s not under contract after this year, either.

Once the calendar hits 1 March, if nothing changes, the only QB on this roster will be Joe Webb.

the FULL context of Allen, Hutch and Longwell’s visit to Favre in August. We were told he was coming back for the guys in the locker room. That is the partial story. A fan to the end

I’ve been a fan since I began watching at the age of 6 or so back in 1980. I went through the Steckel abortion (thank God I was too young to understnad how horrible that was at the time). I’ve cheered for the Vikes and listened to ***holes at work who constantly talk smack about the Vikes. I don’t care, they’re my team and they always will be.

I still stick by Favre as our quarterback. I still feel inept play at the o-line is more indicative of the failure of our offense than Favre is. I still feel Brett has made some mistakes, but I think we’re better with him than anyone else we have at QB. Brett still gives 110% every game, he leaves his heart on the field every game. I get frustrated at his mistakes, too. However, I think he is our best chance to win. I think a different coach with an open play book could do a lot with this (potentially) potent offense. Which brings me to…..

I still think Childress should be fired; when you have a team with the talent that this team has, it is the fault of the coach when they are not playing in sync. I believe that is what the problem is. If it is one player, you blame it on the player. When you have 10 pro bowl caliber players who are not laying it all out on the field, it is a coaching problem. There are very few players who are giving it all. Harvin, Peterson, and Favre lay it all out there every week. There are just too many who don’t seem to give a damn, and I think the head idiot err coach is to blame.

I’ll be in Minnesota for the Giants game on Dec 12, and I hope it is to watch a revived team with a different coach. I’m an Eli Manning fan, but I would love nothing more than to watch my Vikings run all over his team.

by Jonny Piff on Nov 21, 2010 5:40 PM CST reply actions

honestly

we’ve seen every game. at least one, if not more, of the multiple picks he throws, is on the receiver falling or tipping the ball up. I can think of at least 5 interceptions that were harvin’s (2) /peterson’s/lewis’s/berrian’s faults. so that numbers is inflated. not to say he’s been AMAZING this year, but he isn’t directly costing us points every turnover either..

We are all upset and kissing BF’s ass is not what I wanted. There was a point it was time to give T-jax his reps and time to see if we can evaluate a Frazier led team. See what he can do. No miracles but plug the leaks instead of a coach who is bailing water.

I just don’t think we have a realistic chance to make the playoffs this season with our current quarterback and coach. 9-7 is still possible but I don’t think the turnover machine will allow us to contend for a wildcard spot as long as he is holding a grudge against Chilly(and his injuries).

The problem with hoping a team loses

And I’m not saying you are doing that. Is that it creates a loser mentality. It just does, sooner or later you get stuck in a spot that resembles Detroit more than Minnesota and I don’t think anyone wants that where you hope you get lucky and get that first round draft pick, or get a new coach or whatever. Instead you and the team need to beleive that you can shape your own destiny. By that I mean win enough to restore the teams identity. Win enough that players want to play for this ball club. Play hard enough that you still have the respect of other teams, players and fans. Once you stop doing any of that you lose not only games but yourself as well.

This monologe was brought to you by the letter purple.

You kept the argument up and instead of owning up to it you are blaming me in the light of me quoting your comments to people.
There was nothing I bashed you on in your statements on the status of the team and agreed on most of them.
We have a code. one you quoted “agree to disagree” but did not follow it. We also have a rule on not name calling. You don’t own the error and continue attacking Cali. You don’t apologize but belittle a persons disability.
Seriously. do you have a reality problem.
An out and out apology to Cali would have sufficed and then discussed your points. You will notice I disagreed with Cali on an issue we agreed on but did not say he was stupid.

Incredible

How do you do screw a championship team up this badly? Seriously. How do you take a team that even the NFL acknowledges should have been in the Big Dance last year, a team with 12 Pro Bowlers, and turn them to absolute crap in less than a year? Unreal.

I begin to think that the Vikings would probably play better with no coach at all, than what they’re doing under Childress. He can’t be let go fast enough for me. Along with Berrian. Start the rebuild NOW, dump the jokers out of the deck and draw some new cards.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

It is definitely coaching.

Remember the first quarter? Vikings offense had some good momentum. The Packer O was abysmal. What happened after that?

I believe that the coaching (and players) adjusted.

The way this team played and how they gave up has shown me that the majority of this team has no honor and is well deserving of being called the VIQUEENS. Until they show me effort, passion, determination, and a mentality to never give up. They are from this day forward the Minnesota VIQUEENS.

the fat lady is putting on her dress

It’s over folks! Whenever you see Vikings players laughing on the sidelines despite getting their butts kicked, it’s over. They have not only quit on their coach, the’ve quit on themselves. Clearly, this team is dysfunctional and it starts atthe top with Childress right on down. If I was head coach, I’d tell Bret Fvre to get comfortable and find a seat on the bench cause that’s where you’re going for the rest of the year. Frankly, I would have told Favre that after the Bear game. And now……Favre goes off on his offensive co-ordinator. He really needs to look in the mirror for why they are where they are. The Vikings to a shot at it with “begging” favre to come back and now it’s come back to bite them. Overall, there’s not one part of the offense or defense that anyone can brag about with the exception of Percy Harvin and AP.

Memo to Chilly or whoever might be coach next game: It’s over, give your subs the chance to market themselves by playing them and give the first teamers a breather.

by jjlovesfootball on Nov 21, 2010 9:10 PM CST reply actions

Completely agree

It is time for some of the veterans to take a back seat. When you can not make the playoffs which this team is not going to do, the next best thing to do is to begin to build depth for next year. Look for ways to strengthen the team in areas that it needs to be strengthen in.

by PurpleTears on Nov 21, 2010 10:29 PM CST up reply actions

ACtually if you look at the current team you have a couple of key spots that will need to be shored

But nothing that is completely out of hand. You still have the ability to trade a couiple of players out as well, and for gods sake cut a couple that are pure trash. I personally woudl look to trade Allen in the off season. We have a strong DE line up and we could maybe pick up a #1 draft pick for him next year. At least look at teh Eagles and consider trading him for Kolb and a #5. Pat has to go but we have a couple of people behind him that are showing up. Henderson has Brinkly who I believe will be a stellar middle line backer. Leber has Erin who isn’t great but is capable. On offense we need to work on our O line. If we pick up Kolb for Allen I would use the #3 pick on a left tackle our #2 pick on a left guard then work both of them into the line up next year with the idea of replacing McKinney and Hutch in 2012. No I think people who are flipping out over the age of our team are truly just flipping out. Our main concern as always will be our QB position, second biggest concern is our line.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Nov 22, 2010 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

This is true

So is our offensive line, our defensive line, I rather like our linebackers, but we need to upgrade in almost every area. Favre in a HOF quarterback but he’s done after this year – not sure who to try and draft and don’t know who’s on the market for sure.

by abba7 on Nov 21, 2010 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

How many times have our Safties been torched for long passes this season?

It seems like we give up huge momentum plays at least once per game.

Our Secondary has been pretty weak for years

I remember the days of Paul Krause and Joey Browner – ah the good old days – I’m not that old either. Winfield is the only solid one now I think.

by abba7 on Nov 21, 2010 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

Good old days......

Paul Krause, Bobby Bryant, Nate Wright, Jeff Bryant. They did their jobs day in and day out, without any bs. AND were paid a pittance compared to the spoiled fking, posse needing athletes of today. You know what? I was prouder of the four Viking teams that LOST Super Bowls than I am of this bunch. I know, I know, it starts with Chillz. I rued the day Metropolitan Stadium was replaced by the current incubator for softness known as the Mall of America Metrodome or whatever the hell it is called. Bud Grant didn’t allow warming devices on the bench during games. Today, we have controversies surrounding catered fking lunches during practices. Eh.
Browner? The man could lay you out, nearly as effective as Ronnie Lott. Today? Fking hands of stone DBs who spend more time spinning in circles than tackling, notwithstanding Antoine.
I want more throwback players on the Vikings, not the type of player who spends time looking for a fking diamond that fell out of his earring during the game (Dez Bryant last week.)
Throwbacks- Favre, Peterson, Winfield, Phat Pat, Greenway, EJ, Hutch,
Farwell. Not sure about Jared Allen, he needs to take the game more seriously, in my opinion.

by Mel Allen on Nov 21, 2010 10:56 PM CST up reply actions

I agree Mel

This team has been catered to the basement – My memories of Browner – besides his elbow pads, he was the real deal. He could smoke you alright, but it seems that he was always at the foot of the play, ready to make the tackle no matter what – he might let one of linebackers or whoever make they play, but it they didn’t (BOOM) there he was. You’re right we need that type of player! I always enjoy your comments.

Thanks abba......

just venting. Been hanging with the Vikings a long time. Damn sure not jumping EVER. I forgot to mention Bill Brown, Wally Hilgenberg, Ron Yary, Ed White…..damn, they were pros.

by Mel Allen on Nov 21, 2010 11:40 PM CST up reply actions

This player, that player, whatever.....

it is not just about “Pro Bowl caliber” players either. We know where that has gotten this team. Heart, professionalism, courage, sound work ethics, and an understanding of “team” will carry you to the promised land. Recent evidence? Look at the Patriots organization, from top to bottom. THAT is what the Vikings used to be, minus the obvious championships.

I don't know Cali

Seems the team rather just gave up this year. I’m not sure if it was because of Childress, a slow start, or what. But it’ll get better. It practically has to – wait and see.

Abba

it ultimately falls on chilly. You have a group of guys coming out of the huddle with one guy making the clap. Uninspired.
Blame Leslie’s D ? They have been seeing their efforts keep us in the game only to see nothing happen on O. They have lost the swagger.. It is a virus hitting every part of the team.
that is why i say try Frazier NOW. We have nothing to lose but gain an idea of whether he can lead and inspire the team. We find out if it is morale of many or few and weed them out.
We wait and make a coaching change error and we are stuck. We can learn right now idf leslie is the guy on an interim basisi. Sign him if a change is seen. Not playoffs but a change in attitude. If we continue to suck, we know we may have to interview more candidates

by CitrusFLViking on Nov 21, 2010 10:29 PM CST reply actions

The moral of this story is...

Don’t wrap your life line around your neck. Brad Childress was in deep shit after it became obvious that Tarvaris Jackson simply wasn’t starter material. Jackson simply doesn’t think on his feet fast enough to do progressions as he moves in the pocket. His arm isn’t accurate enough to hit receivers in-stride.

Desperate to buy time, Childress brought in the old gun slinger, Brett Favre. It worked for one glorious year because everything fell into place. The O-Line was relatively healthy. The receivers were relatively healthy. Favre was only 40. They had Peterson and Chester Taylor. The defense was stopping the run and racking up sacks.

This year, it has all gone to hell. Favre started the year hobbled, and it got worse. Sydney Rice hasn’t played all year, and now that he’s back, he’s playing at about 75 percent. Bernard Berrian effectively retired last year, but he still gets paychecks.

Worst of all, Brad Childress is revealing his extreme limitations as a coach. When you look at the personnel of this team, I am amazed how much talent they have, and how badly they’re wasting it. I am mortified at how predictable the offensive play calling has become, especially in the red zone. I am disgusted at the lack of inventiveness of the defensive schemes, the refusal to simply blitz more, or at least try some more interesting stunts. Spin moves, swim moves, delayed blitzes – I’m not seeing much of any of that. Mostly I’m seeing a straight push, easily blocked. The line coaches simply can’t be this stupid. This stuff has to be coming from the head coach.

You know when you see the real value of an NFL head coach? It’s not when everything is going right, like last year. It’s when things go wrong, like this year. It’s when a coach has to patch together something, anything that works and wins. Brad Childress has the parts to make a winning football team, but he won’t use them. He doesn’t appear capable of adapting his scheme to take advantage of the talent at his disposal. Instead, he continues to try to win with old Brett Favre, trying to repeat what happened last year.

All this makes me wonder about Tarvaris Jackson. Maybe it’s not TJ’s fault that he doesn’t win in Brad Childress’ scheme. Maybe the scheme doesn’t fit Jackson’s natural style, which is run and gun.

Vikings fans aren’t going to see Tarvaris Jackson in a run and gun offense. Childress can’t change things that much. He’s not capable of adapting his scheme to different players. That includes Brett Favre, a great drop back passer who knows how to call his own plays, but isn’t allowed to, because Brad Childress wants to run Adrian Peterson over right tackle on every fucking first down.

Well, the result of Chili’s incompetence is losing. At 3 and 7, his life line, Brett Favre, is wrapped around Brad’s scrawny neck, and his career is being choked out by his own insecurities. If Brad Childress thinks that pursuing Favre’s 300 straight starts (instead of winning games) will please Ziggy Wilf, then he has another thing coming: a pink slip.

by RayBourque on Nov 22, 2010 4:36 AM CST up reply actions

The organization and entire city

sold their souls to Brett. It was a grand experiment that has ended in complete failure.

The experiment almost worked last year with Favre having the best year of his career at age 40. The crime was in trying to build upon that by bringing him back this year after he got the snot knocked out of him in the NO game. That should have ended the experiment but hubris on both BF and the Vikes parts overcame what was obvious to less impassioned observers. Chilly may be the scapegoat, but the fate of this season was determined when three players traveled to Louisiana to woo the ageless wonder. That sealed the deal, just not in the way it was intended.
