Wow, this close to the moment
it seems like you’re asking what’s better, a root canal or a root canal?
Both coaches had success, and Denny gets the check for better on-field performance.
But Chilly, up until this year, ran a tight ship, for the most part. WIth Denny, it just seemed like a traveling circus—-sexual harassment suit, threatened to sue for ownership in a book he wrote, really had unqualified guys as assistants just because they were Denny yes men, etc.
But here’s the clincher for me: Who left the franchise in better shape when he left as opposed to when he arrived, Denny or Chilly?
I have to go with Chilly. When Denny left, the Vikings were in complete shambles and aside from Moss and Culpepper, very little talent. WIth Chilly, there’s still a lot of talent on the roster. Granted, it’s one of the most underachieving teams in recent memory, but the team is in better shape now than when Chilly arrived.
And for that, I thank him.

One of the best meltdowns in the history of sports. I remember watching this live and rewinding it like 20 times laughing on the floor!!!!
Its right up there with Playoffs? PLAYOFFS?

denny might not have been the best coach
but he did have a good record with comparable talent to what childress had. and, lets face it, denny did have to use sean salisbury as his QB at times as well as rich gannon (before he was let loose and became awesome for a few seasons) and jim mcmahon at the end of his career before getting warren moon. and his worst season was the year after robert smith retired out of the blue…….that would be kind of like peterson retiring after last season. that takes a huge chunk of offense away. those things along with the fact that, from what i know, his players never hated him.
i voted for denny. he might have run a loose ship but at least he got production from his players. childress ran a tight ship with everyone but farve, who he let do what he wanted, and got one good season from it and one stinkbomb season out of the deal.

No Comparison
I never thought I’d say this, but I’d have ten Dennis Green’s at head coach before one more Brad Childress.
Green was tough, but always seemed to be regarded as a coach that players wanted to play under. Almost the exact opposite I think could be said about Chili.
Sure, Green had his personal faults, but that’s probably only because we really don’t know anything about Chili even after 4+ years at the helm. Sometimes, he came off as a philosopher. Other times, as a foul-mouthed bully.
Denny Green
He won a lot. I don’t think he had a losing season. He came on board with not much and built the team into a power house. When he left the Vikes were pretty much a staple in the play offs. Yes he made some mistakes but in the long run he won games. You also have to remember Red McCombs was the leagues worst owner and I believe that was another reason for the gigantic melt down we had at the end of his tenure.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Couldnt stand Denny the whole time he was here
I did appreciate the wins and the ‘98 season but he had a problem with control and discipline. and he said one of his goals was to make Minnesota the blackest team in the NFL. That is when i lost all respect for him. Don’t get me wrong I could care less the color of the players on our team. I think that the goal should be to assemble the best team possible regardless of color.
Up until this year Chilly was a very good coach with regard to discipline, he also was very good at finding talent, he was however very disturbed when it came to his play calling ability.
I agree with Ted
Chilly left us in a much better position talent wise, than Denny did so my vote is Chilly.

I understand that but Green never had the melt down that Childress did.

Green was certainly more entertaining i'll give you that

Green
He brough us to play-offs from the get-go…
Out of his whole time here, there were only 2 seasons the Vikings did not make the playoffs. One of those years was a 8-8 year, while the other one was his last at 5-10..
Interesting side fact…
Three playoffs: The Vikings made the playoffs 3 times under Dennis Green by going 9-7!
both would greatly annoy me..
..when after another bad loss..they would (eerily) similarly just repeat some same non-descriptive bulls%^t line over and over.. w/o any substance..

when you put dashes around a bunch of words it lines things out
just like if you put asterix around words it bolds them it’s short hand I guess see
