Read...And You (if it Pertains) Better Heed
I joined Daily Norseman a couple of years back because this was, (and still is, for 98% of the people here) primarily, not two things:
1) Purple Thoughts over at Scout.com
2) Rube Chat on KFAN.
I firmly believe that if you want to go to the best place on the Internet to debate and discuss the Minnesota Vikings with intelligent fans, this is the place, hands down. If I didn't, I wouldn't have become an admin and contributing writer here. Over the weekend, a couple of really solid members of this community emailed me and said that the tone of this site has taken a pretty ugly turn over the last few months, and that they are about fed up with DN. It's becoming a place we don't want it to be, and a lot of the threads, at least lately, tend to devolve into a 'Lord of the Flies' place that really sucks the fun out of debating the team we all love, the Vikings. And that's my fault as much as anyone elses for not doing a better job of policing.
And it stops.
Today.
I'm not here to debate how we got to this point or why we got to this point. We are here. And it's time to put the brakes on this three year old Internet drama bullshit, because that's what it is.
Bullshit.
I understand that frustration over what's happened this year can make for a sour outlook on the team, and it's perfectly reasonable to vent those frustrations, but do it in an intelligent 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you' manner. We've had more to talk about this season than any in recent memory.
But some members have become too quick to turn their anger on other members of the community, and that's unacceptable. If somebody posts something you don't agree with, that's fine. You're well within the guidelines of this community to vehemently disagree...WITH THE OPINION, NOT THE POSTER.
Stop with the name calling. If you don't like something that someone says, disagree with what they wrote without turning it in to a personal attack.
Acceptable: That's a lame opinion, because...
Unacceptable: You're a dumbass retard because...
See the difference?
Stop with the grammer police. People mis-spell words all the time. Deal with it.
Game threads get more leeway than regular posts. It's really a raw emotional time, and we all tend to over react when Brett Favre throws another &%$#@%$@ interception. But as pissed off as the Vikings can make you, it's still no place to belittle or insult another poster, who's just as frustrated and pissed off as you are.
Here are the community guidelines. They're pretty cut and dry. Read them. If you've read them before, read them again. And heed them. They're not difficult.
You can help me help you. If you see a comment that you think violates the community guidelines, at the bottom of the comment window is an 'action' link. Click that and you can either 'rec' or 'flag' a comment. If you flag it, a box opens up where you can describe it as spam, troll or inappropriate. No one other than admins can see if you flag a comment. It goes to a section that only admins have access to where that comment is highlighted and we can take action as appropriate. Yes, I've morphed into the all-powerful Oz, but I can't be in every thread at once.
I've locked a couple posts, both in the fanpost section and on the main page. I issue warnings next, unless you get racist or sexist--then you're gone with no warning.
You won't get a second warning.
I've been reluctant to use my vast Interweb powers as an admin here, because that's not my bag, baby. I like to consider myself the happy, benevolent dictator. But from now on, I'm going to go Kim-Jong IL if I have to to ensure we get back to the high standards we all want for DN.
Thanks,
Ted Jong-IL

thank you
I for one was having a hard time over the last month. Its hard enough when the team sucks and every game about gives you an ulcer, but turn to DN and its nothing but fighting, name calling and so on. I just simply stopped coming by as much. Hope this holds up cause I need a place to talk Vikings and this really should be it!

Thanks Ted
When I joined last summer this was my favorite site on the net, and there was a group of posters that all knew each other and were always talking with each other. Now it seems as if we’ve gotten a fresh wave of new handels around here and some of them are spoiling the fun for everybody else. Don’t get my wrong I love seeing more attracted to this site but I think the problem with what some guys were having is we were so accustomed to having that group where you could name everybody that would be at the gamethread before they’d be there and you knew the way the person was. (If they were sarcastic and whatnot)
Now theres a bunch of newer guys and some of them try to bully and belittle everybody else because they’re on the Internet. Like I said though I’m very glad we have the Dailynirseman
What you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your entire rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Don't you mean
the Dailynorseman? He said no grammar police, didn’t say anything about spelling police. ; )
It's been a tough year
If we could all follow Ted’s lead, and put forward some more cheerfulness in the face of this adversity, it would help some. I’ll do my part.
Good
There are some particular “Farve supporters” that rip you when you try and support you call for a change with the number supporting facts. Hopefully there are better responses than “Nope” in the future of the DN.
I was going to fight back
but I am not going to even bother. But Ted, you are correct and I approve your message lmao.

The hair pulling frustration level of.....
the 2010 version of the Vikings is at an all time high. There have been similar single games in the course of the team’s history, but, this as best I can recall, is unprecedented. Still, I agree that tempers have been running high, usually centered around Favre, play him vs. sit him, who is a real fan, etc. The way I see it, most, if not ALL the posters are fans, but, they just come at it with varying perspectives. It is only because the team is not performing do these subtle differences bubble up. Good post Ted to calm down the troops. I hope.
Good call Ted
I got a bit uppity at a Packer troll earlier this week, and I regret it. Sorry to any of you who read it. This site is better than that, and I apologize for feeding trolls.
Good point

If someone who is a fan of another team comes here to discuss football can they at least be given the benefit of the doubt about being a non-douche before you automatically lump them in with all of the actual douches just because they support a different team?
For the record: If i ever wanted to explicitly belittle the Vikings i would do so in a very blunt manner. If i make a comment here it is not a subliminal message/attack against the Vikings.
Good luck with the new coach and for the rest of the season.

Look at yourself first Grumps.
You eventually rose above the bickering here and received a more respectful dialogue with our members. When you walk into a den of disappointment and anger you need to employ a diffusive diplomatic demeanor. In short, post as a human being, not as a Saints fan.
Most CSC visitors in the off-season came over here, and obviously saw the walls of text expressing resentment, anger, crybaby sour grapes, basically the full range of heartbreak. Then, they would post something defensive… bad move, and guaranteed to receive unfavorable response. Then they would go back to CSC and create posts criticizing us and encouraging more people to come over and witness the display, and things snowballed.
There is truly an art to diplomacy, and you must begin by shedding your colors and appealing to universal morals and codes of conduct. It’s complicated and difficult, which is why human beings so frequently fail to get along. These subtleties are completely foreign to your average NFL fan, and thus we have an internet full of despicable behavior. I think you would agree that we’re not bad people Grumps. So if your initial reception here was negative, you should first take an honest look at your approach.
Agreed.
I fully admit I got caught up in the bullcrap back and forth at first. That chest thumping on both sides went overboard and i fully apologize for my childish attitude at that time. I think it was Jethrophet that i got into the biggest pissing match (maybe Cali a close second) with and that has seemingly been forgotten at least on my side.
But that attitude is long gone (as are the negative comments) and when visiting fans of other teams come onto CSC i am fully diplomatic to those who post and just ignore the ones who are stirring up crap. I also don’t see the value in going somewhere else just to piss people off. Hell i am Canadian, we are notoriously polite and friendly.
The reason i still come here is that the Vikings are still the most discussed team where i live, the closest place for me to see a NFL game, and well i just like football. And you guys are certainly full of your Vikings knowledge so its a good forum for me to pick up bits valuable information. But if i make a comment like “i dont think 8-8 cuts it to get a wildcard birth” i dont expect to be told i am a troll and go get stuffed.
As a Saints fan first and foremost, i have had to experience more than my share of rough seasons. I certainly won’t come to your “house” and rub it in.
I truly hope for your sakes that either Frazier or the new incumbent can lead your team to the ultimate prize. I know how i always wondered if it was ever going to happen for the Saints and for Saints fans, and how fantastic a feeling it was when they accomplished it. I wouldn’t wish any football fan to miss that feeling.
I like Hamburgers!
Apology accepted.
You were the first person who confronted me when I joined DN…because I wrote a fanpost against Saints. I don’t remember if we were disrespectful though. Anyway, water under the bridge (with you). As for the Saints: I still hate Saints and hope Brees gets the Madden curse going soon.
Not trying to be rude to you. Just being honest. Brutal? Maybe. Honest? We think so.
Hey man your perogative.
You can hate the Saints and wish ill on Brees if you want. I won’t try to convince you otherwise. Everyone has their team for their reasons.
I don’t wish injury on any player so there won’t be any of that kind of comment on my part.
The way i look at it, Brees has some crazy mojo of his own. His version of the Madden curse was probably all those picks he is throwing this year.

It definitely goes both ways...
No doubt, we had our share of chest-pounders and short tempers. Equally true, CSC became a minefield for Viking fans but a few of us managed to post over there without too much turmoil.
As our season progressively spiraled down the toilet, all of us received less calm rational dialogue… Viking fans included. After the Green Bay implosion and firing of Childress it seems like a weight has been lifted. Regardless how we finish the season, I suspect that DN will be a kindler gentler blog.
I have presented my reasons for special treatment of Saints many times so let's not go there again.
That SOB (Brees) is good. I will give you that.
Guess if we had gone after Brees
in that FA time. Hmmmm? I don’t dislike the guy. If I could pick a guy to just grab and make a Viking QB, Drew would be in the top 3. Manning #1, Drew a close #2
by CitrusFLViking on Nov 27, 2010 7:31 PM CST up reply actions
I don't dislike him much either...just want the team to lose...which is not going to happen unless he is out.
I believe we had options of Vince Young and Jay Cutler in 2006 draft when we took TJ. Can’t complain for that.
I don’t know about other FA misses.
2006 was a bad draft year for QBs.
When Cutler is the most consistent performer of a QB class you know it’s not a good crop of QBs. Compared to the rest of the class TJ being a solid backup so far is actually a fairly successful pick : )

This is odd though
Considering that so early in the season, the whole NFC north went defeated. Not one single team in the NFC is undefeated. From my knowledge, if I recall, not one team has less than 2 losses. Its the 2nd 1/2 of the season folks, some teams start to become gassed.. It could very well be a team that comes in w/ the never give up attitude and makes a playoff spot.
3 times! The Vikings made the playoffs under Denny Green alone w/ a 9-7 record.
It is not impossible, but at the outlook of our season, possibly unlikely.
Basically, the Vikings have to win out the rest of their season… Is it possible? Yes…. But even that doesn’t guarantee anything.
Than we have to take our WC spot and hope to win out 3 playoff games ot make it to the big-one.
Could it happen? Possibly, but it would be quite the story for the Vikings… And it’ll make Frazier look really good!
Thanks Ted
Ive been reading this site daily since my 1st tour in Iraq back in 06 and it has taken a downturn. Thanks for saying what needed to be said.
Hey no prob Ted I my self have gotten carried away some times in the heat of the moment but I do agree for sure!!! I for one will be more anger free!!!
You're still allowed to use a boatload of exclamation points Cali! :)
I though his name was Ted Mussolini. Anyway I agree with the article and have been guilty of some of the things he describes so…
For some reason it seems like the Vikes fan-base is much calmer now that our season is over
I had minor confrontations (difference in opinion) with at least 3 members of DN but lately everyone is complimenting each other and posting funny stuff…I guess that is the purpose of having website such as DN…support each other…especially when the team is down.
@abba7: Is my overuse of ……allowed? :)
What are you even doing up at this time of night?
Do you ever sleep? I would say izzie, and I obviously have nothing to do with it, you would probably get a pass under almost any circumstance besides racial. That’s one of the reasons why I like this site. I find someone who makes me laugh almost everyday. The Russian marriage sites are breaking me! I keep sending money Western Union, but none of the girls are showing up at my house yet. It’s pissing me off! Take care and keep writing posts!
THANK YOU TED
I have been a member for 2yrs and yesterday i almost left the site for good, it has become a very toxic and bitter place.
I think i will stay a while longer because there are many good people here also.
This season has really sucked, but i look forward to the future and i am curious to see what happens next year.
I appreciate this Ted and I will do what I can to let you know if there is flaggrant issues
Because this site is a great site and no one should feel like they can’t express their opinions freely even if the opinion is totally lame like making TJ the starting QB.
You know what if TJ leaves next year I’ll have nothing left to complain about. Hopefully this will allow some of our older members the ability to come out of hiding and express themselves again. Been missing ya Percy and Arizona, havn’t seen vkingfanfromafar in a long time either.. Where the heck is Manimal? Oh and can anyone find Waldo?

And to all the rest of you that run the site as well. It has been getting worse, more so this year for obvious reason’s. Unfortunately, at the height of the implosion to start the week off, I got into it with someone from ACME, though his statement of “moving to L.A. will take care if it” or something along that line set me off. Hell, my blood boils everytime I see a jersey from a hockey team in Dallas here in New Mexico. But no, even on my part, there was no excuse to get into it with a incitefull troll.
I know others from ACME and Windy City have come in here this week and offered some good insight or thoughts or been respectful, with some shouting them down. That I don’t like either. Yeah, I can understand when someone is in here being a doofus and we vent a little on them, though they get off by knowing they are getting under our skins. But I think we should also extend the same respect to those from other sites, no matter who, that are coming in here and offering thoughts and opinions in the same respectful manner.
Also, to the new folks that have come in here, interestingly enough, the past month or so, who have been less then decent to others, please read what Ted has said, it is getting old. Like yesterdays responce of “stfu” to a very good post, or being called stupid about a post of mine, or others who only came here because Favre is now our QB calling others an idiot whether it’s someone posting in here or coming here from another site and posting a decent post.
It’s been a trying season for all of us as fans as well as for our team. Look at what was happening to the team during last weeks game, fighting amoungst each other. Guess what we are doing just like they were? Yeah, my frustration was high with the Vikings until Monday mornings news, but my frustration is still high here. Not with Ted or many of the folks I’ve chatted with or debated with the almost 2 years I’ve been here, but the few that started coming in here last year due to Favre or others as of late that belittle any idea put out there other then sticking to Favre, or this guy, or that guy. I will agree with Ted, most of the other sites on the net like this are pretty toxic, I’d like to stay above that as well as stay on the D.N. instead of letting a few loud mouths let others and myself walk away looking for something else.

As a longtime reader and new member this year, I too have noticed that lately when trying to have a discussion about our future, it’s been more about one-up man ships. Respect.
Much respect Ted. I appreciate being able to come here as I do all other rival team blogs and get insight. Because let’s be honest, we are bound as division rivals (‘rivals’ not ‘enemies’ because we shouldn’t be hostile to one another) and it would be foolish to say "well you shouldn’t come on our blog "or "we shouldn’t come on yours".
I’ve experienced conversations with respectful, intelligent members from both sides but unfortunately I’ve also experienced the lesser-evolved subculture categorized as Trolls.
I’m not going to apologize for the Trolls who happen to originate from our blog as I would never expect any of you to have to apologize for your Trolls. Trolls are Trolls regardless of which teams they support.
I hope you won’t take this as trolling or instigating but I wanted to offer an observation of why things got so out of hand here, and hopefully a few individuals can reevaluate how they handle certain situations and make some mature changes in the way they react.
I understand that with sports teams, and competition in general, emotions can run rampant. Now contrary to what some individuals believe, there will always be Trolls and no matter how many there are or who they claim to follow, they will never represent a demographic or fanbase. In fact no one individual is a fair representation of a group of people.
However, an individual in a leadership position, let’s say a Contributing Writer, has an obligation to represent his fanbase in a professional manner. A leader such as this is the most visible beacon of that fanbase and regardless of whether it’s fair or not, he or she represents that group. Now the problem arises when said Leader starts to exhibit Trollish behavior.
Trollish behavior such as feeding the Trolls, taking inflammatory shots to bring about said Trolls, purposely keeping inflammatory posts Rec’d to incite anger from own fanbase and benefit agenda against rival fanbase.
I don’t care how much hate mail and how many years of experience have colored the glasses, but as a person in a leadership position, all that hate is part of your burden. You are going to be called out because you are so visible, and if you can’t brush it off and act with a level of professionalism in the face of adversity, than maybe you need to consider not putting yourself out there like that.
I mean take it from me, just this week I was being marginalized because a troll who also happen to be fans of my team, wrote an mean spirited ignorant rant. But it doesn’t bother me because I know he doesn’t represent me, I can take it, I’m a man, I’m 40.
Here’s hoping we can all continue to agree to disagree in a semi-friendly manner.
why not splash this on the front page?
..great post, long overdue..perhaps more people will read/heed if it was on the main page?

I discovered this site about a year ago and have loved it. Having spent way to long on other sports sites, this has always been a breath of fresh air. Ya, it has gotten a little bit nasty at times lately, but still, after some of those other sites, it was still like Sunday school in here.

I looked at a thread(fanpost) from back in 2008.
Surprisingly, I did not recognize any names on there.
I’ve been a pretty solid member for over a year even contributing and lurking in the off-season. I’ve seen names come & go, but many that I recall initially see, are still present today. I wonder if some of these names will start coming back?
Who knows… But hopefully many will stay..

Probably..
Because of the Favre ordeal had a big reasoning behind it. Oh, and the pretty successful season helps as well.
I found DN in early 2009 as well.
I started off as a lurker, mostly reading the articles. I quickly realized that this was a site for people to comment on their beloved Vikings. You see, when you read through comments through Yahoo sports articles, you find a lot of misinformed people that leave basic misinformed and worthless comments that are either in extreme favor of the Vikings or against it.
Here, we can get our basic information and subjective thoughts… Which is when i decided to sign up and participate.
I don’t think I have gone over a week w/o posting since I signed up. Sometimes posting several times a day every day.
I may not post on the weekends much, but, usually during the week.
Also, I found it pretty fun when we did our mock-draft.
I even had the DN as my home page for a while

Let’s see if we can get management to pay us for every comment. Like maybe $.05 for every good one – we’d have to come up with a rating system or something. I’m pretty pretty sure this idea will go over REAL well! lol You and Izzie and quite a few others could be rich in a couple of years!
But the penalty for bad comments should be $.06

I mean, now is the time to bring it up right? With Thanksgiving being tomorrow? I am curious what everyone’s favorite pie is… Pecan? Pumpkin? And what they top it off with..
Cool wHip?
Come on, now, that’s just hwierd.

Pie is good. I once had a maple sugar pie..in 2004.
Off of the important discussion going on here: I joined DN this season. Found it from Yahoo. I am probably losing a lot of money because of DN. I have it as bookmark (tab) on Chrome and hence lately some of the earliest comments on new fanposts. Gotta stop doing this. The world needs me.
I have 4 growlers filled for tomorrow
For those unfamiliar to the term “Growlers”, that is a 1/2 gallon of beer from your local brew pub that is filled in a jug. Two from Marble Brewery in Albuquerque, Two from Turtle Mountain Brewery down the street from me in Rio Rancho. NMVike may have heard of the two. Anyrate, I’ll be watching the football fest with my folks at their house while helping my Mom make dinner. And yes ladies, I do know how to cook. Kick assed too, and single! lol
Dysfunctional Family - Family in disarray. Fractured and lack of communication of family. Minnesota Vikings 2010 season surpassing any nightmare brought upon by the 1989 aquisition of Herschel Walker or the 2005 Love Boat Scandal on Lake Minnetonka.

Ha!
I am probably logged in on average….. 5-6 hours per day.
I may not necessarily be reading articles at the time, but I may have the site open.
And I post often.
I like & want people to recognize my name.. So they know that I am a regular poster here.
that will beat me but I am on the road two days a week and the
mobile version is a little difficult to navigate. but when I work from home the DN is usually open or at least checked many times during the day.

I lurk with my mobile.
I can’t comment through my mobile, because I can’t login. For some reason, when attempting to login through Yahoo, which I use my Yahoo account, it won’t let me login here. But I am more interested in reading the articles anyways. Even on a Droid X with a large screen, the watered down mobile version doesn’t compare to the actual PC version.
Thanks for this post and apology to NMVike
I want to 1st apologize for my post to NMVike. We had a misunderstanding and believe we are good. I let it get the bst of me because lately been seeing the “stupid”, “your a retard”, idiot" comments and other crap from some newcomers who seem to think this is a blog where it is funny to do such things -which we are not. Myself, Cali and Abba finally had enough and lit it up. I don’t know if it is better to ignore or not. It just didn’t seem to go away. I started with a friendly warning and got lambasted. My bad for blowing up and letting it go on. I was just not in the mood to see it anymore.
BTW – the only reason the post with me and NM having a squabble (which has been worked out I hope) was cause of Velvets amazing pictures and people told me not to take it down. Peace had prevailed and Velvet had the touch that day.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone.
yea, a little soft porn fixes everything.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
It was a a nice way to finish a discussion jethro :-)
I didn’t wantt to say it about that post but my suspicians cmae true. Ya see. If zygi would just listen to guys like us we would have had Chilly gone after that warning post after the AZ game. Frazier would be in and I think we would have a decent chance.
Well, here;s to 6 -0 finish, Frazier would be the biggest hero in the state of Minnesota.
Shoot! I can’t give up yet.

Oh
New mex never got into any name calling. He is a cool guy and great fan and thats all that counts with both of us
Yet another "Thanks Ted"
I was never the most active poster in the world, but this used to be the place I went for Viking’s discussion/news/etc. Things here seemed to take a hard turn for the worse after the Game-which-shall-not-be-named (January 24, 2010) and never really got back to where they were before then. This has been a tough stretch, but times don’t stay good forever. This should be a place where we can come to and celebrate when things are going good (it was, great place to be last fall/early winter), but also a place that can ground us when stuff starts to go bad.
We may have vastly different opinions about how the team should be run/what should happen, but as far as I know, no one here has any real authority to change those things. Because gasp it doesn’t really matter whether you can convince that one guy that Favre should never step foot in the state of Minnesota again after the way he has played this season or that Tavaris Jackson probably is not, and will never be a successful NFL quarterback, it is not worth it to sink to personal attacks and hurt feelings over it. We are all mostly Vikings fans here, so we all have that in common. Let’s start supporting each other, or at least acting civilly.
Anyway, hope this signifies a return to decency in the comment threads and I’ll be making this site a daily habit of mine again. There isn’t much in the way of Viking news around here, and having to rely on ESPN is horrific.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. And SKOL Vikes!
Premature apologies
because that was a rambling mess.
However, in my defense it is 3:40 AM here and I’ve been outlining Civil Procedure for what seems like the past 3 days.
Yeah, fans can get a little salty when their team isn't playing so inspired
especially after almost hitting the top of the heap the season before. It’s not an excuse for anyone being insulting or rude or anything, but it might explain it a little. Of course, some people are just rude and insulting in their everyday lives, so that’s how they’re going to be when they are typing their thoughts as well as speaking them.
BUT, as someone who is fairly pessimistic about the Vikings a good 75% of the time, even I must interject this: You never know when or why your team will turn it around. Where were the Colts and Patriots before they found Manning and Brady? Where were the Saints before they got lucky with Brees and Sean Payton? Where were the Cardinals before they struck gold with Kurt Warner? (And for that matter, where are they now that he’s retired? Right back where they were before).
So we’re having a poor season, but it’s an opportunity to clean things up, reshape the team image a bit, get a fresh start, and (more than likely) get a high draft pick which we can use on the franchise’s next young quarterback.
Chin up Vikings fans! Or pop another top, whichever suits you.
As a Saints fan
I can tell you, before we lucked out in getting Payton, landing Brees, and drafting our decoy in Bush we were in the crapper.
Jim Haslett and Aaron Brooks. Enough said.
Barf.
I like Hamburgers!
Thanks Ted
I, like most others, will do my part in attempting to control the level and direction of frustration. Luckily, I have never had a warning but will do my best to make sure I don’t test that limit. I appreciate all you and other admins do for our enjoyment and commit to doing all I can to assist!
SKOL!!
Now, with that behind us, can we see a little Joe Webb and look forward to the future?
Yea because I remember someone called me a Moron
for one post I had put up saying that the Vikings will make the playoffs.

Happy Turducken Day
Seems a little late in the year to be having thanksgiving but enjoy your day!
I like Hamburgers!
I find it assuming that Turducken has a "TURD" in it.
But then with 3 birds there, there actually might be real turd in there somewhere. Just a thought.
Looking forward to this :)
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
A Very Belated Thanks Ted....
But I have to ask, what ever happened to Gonzo’s rules last year about profanity? Used to be that anyone using profanity would be banned or restricted. Apparently that rule no longer exists as the profanity this year has reached new highs. Listen, I’m not innocent here and think a well deserved #@%) is often very effective, but I sort of liked the old rules … kept it PG and made for some creative prose.
