My Plug For "T-Jax For Starter in 2011!"

If situations such as those of Tom Brady, Matt Schaub, Tony Romo and Aaron Rodgers have showed us anything, it's that a few years on the same team behind a solid quarterback, who knows the system and is a good teacher, can essentially mold a young NFL QB into a top tier starter.

And that is what I'm excited about for Tarvaris Jackson next season.

It's not that he's necessarily unproven either (a QB rating close to 80 - whatever that means, 59% completion percentage, 4 more TDs than INTs, Vick-like with his legs, and best of all a 10-10 record as a starter). Call the logic incorrect if you'd like, but the 10-10 career record tells me that a younger, more inexperienced T-Jax with a worse supporting cast than the Vikings have right now could conjure up an 8-8 regular season. Now tell me we aren't at least a playoff contender with him at the helm next season, surrounded by a healthy Sidney Rice and a seasoned Adrian Peterson.

Anybody seeing 8-8 for THIS season? Didn't think so.

I'm excited for you, T-Jax. Your chance to prove yourself is long overdue. See you in 2011.

TJ deserves one last chance to QB this team.

He has improved a little every year and was told he’d have a chance to compete for the starting job before Brett was brought in. He certainly can’t do worse than an injured Favre.

YAY A TJ FAN!

Well actually, it’s been a while I’ll have to regather all the information I used to blast at Canadian and LLV during our epic rants.

But as a rule just say no to TJ. The shoe string hop passes…

Ah, our favorite never-ending debate : )

He gets his last chance next year in my opinion. Either he finally lives up to his potential or he’s gone forever and we’ll have to argue about Tahi versus a coke machine instead.

I'd like to know...

what your guys’ ideas are for next year’s starting QB. I respect your answers, I just want to know. What quarterback can we plug in in 2011 and say “this is our guy” … “this is the future for Minnesota Vikings football.” Certainly you can’t want to go backwards and toy with the idea of Andrew Luck or Ryan Mallet. And God knows nobody wants to go the Gus Frerotte or Brad Johnson routes either. Isn’t T-Jax a logical successor for what we want to accomplish in 2011? Thoughts…

Honestly it probably will be eithe Vick or McNabb

But I personally hope that TJ does start nexst year and we pick up a solid QB in the draft. Honestly I think our chance is up we would be best served next year by having a fire sale and picking up as many draft picks as we can. Trade Jared Allen, Winfield, Madieu, Pretty much anyone over 25. then use what you have to start this back up again. As we will hopefully have a new coach I think we’ll be working in that direction anyway. As we might have a fairly solid draft pick I think we have a chance at a solid QB. So yeah I kinda do hope TJ starts for us next year unless we can pick up Kolb.

remember though chances are we’ll be picking up a new HC. Usually when that happens he wants to build the team he knows he can win with. What we have here may not be that.

Oh and I know I’ll get panned for this, but I would even be willing to trade out AD. Not because he’s bad or even because he’s worth a crapton of draft picks but because I think he deserves a chance at a ring and I’m not sure he’ll get one here while he’s still viable. He pounds the rock awfully hard.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Nov 3, 2010 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow!

At this point not a lot of people are interested in what’s best for Adrian Peterson besides being our running back. That’s a bold move to want to ship him out of town. I disagree with that, but respect it because I understand your logic to an extent. I think there’s one word that could describe Minnesota Vikings fans right now, and that’s IMPATIENT above anything else. If we start to see Zygi and Co. move backwards be letting guys go, restructuring, waiting hand and foot on a new head coach’s every request to put a new face on the organization, there will be a mutiny. Then AP will WANT to leave town. Then Minnesota snubs the new stadium and I’m looking for a new favorite team to replace the L.A. Vikings.

Hey I dont' want to see AD leave either

I just don’t think we’ll be back in action with Childress as the HC and most new coaches have a three year plan in their head before they make it back to the playoffs. In three years AD will be in his decline and I really think the man deserves a ring, even if we can’t put it on him.

But now I don’t want to lose him that’s for sure.

T-Jack

has about as much of a chance as a one legged man in an ass-kicking contest to start next year, Donovan Mcnabb will be under center next season.

by prymetyme1 on Nov 3, 2010 3:11 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah because getting another washed-up, out-of-shape diva QB will work real well

And before you start about how it worked well last year, McNabb is NOT as good as Favre (last year). Not now, not ever.

Like many people are saying, we need to get YOUNG. We need to stop trying for the quick fix, the “one missing mercenary piece.” We need to stop mortgaging our future to win now; especially since we haven’t “won now.”

It’s time to TRUST the younger guys, including Tarvaris Jackson. That is what it comes down to. Chilly doesn’t TRUST Jackson, so he gets Favre. He doesn’t TRUST Harvin, Camarillo, AD, Gerhart, and Shank, to get it done, so he panics and trades for Moss.

It’s time to build around a core of Peterson, Harvin, Moss, TJack, Shiancoe, Toby, Greenway, Kevin Williams, Jared Allen, Winfield, and a few others, then trade/cut some dead wood veterans (sorry Madieu Williams, Pat Williams, Sullivan, maybe Hutch at some point), DRAFT well, and roll with what we have and HAVE CHEMISTRY.

We’ll have a lot of talent. Maybe not the most. But hopefully with good chemistry, a chip on their shoulder, youth, and a NEW COACH, we can shock the world in the next year or two.

by Ace991 on Nov 3, 2010 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

it looks like donovon mcnabb will be available.

although i’m not big on this idea, he would come fairly cheap for his expwerience level, and we stand a good chance of losing t-jack. but if we can convince t-jack to re-sign, then a combo of t-jack and mcnabb doesn’t seem too bad for next year (especially if we can’t get a bonafide ringer in the draft).

in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.

by jethrophet on Nov 3, 2010 3:15 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think I want McNabb anymore.

He’s getting older and doesn’t seem to be much more than a 1-2 year solution at this point. I think I’d rather bite the bullet and go with TJ as the starter next year and let Webb and a draft pick battle it out for the future job if Jackson doesn’t show big improvement. I’m getting tired of the revolving door of old QBs. I want a young QB who sticks around for a few years. TJ finally getting his act together would be ideal, but since that isn’t a sure thing I’d like our plan B to be Webb and a high draft pick.

He’s going to be a free agent at the end of 2010 season also…..

He’s also 1 year older than McNabb

Come on Grime, you missed out on the sarcasm

That’s just not like you.

I was trying to make a point about age. There are many people that are of the opinion that McNabb is washed up and too old. But what they don’t realize is that Peyton Manning is older.

But...

There’s a difference between being old and nearly washed up…and not letting it show one bit. Obviously Manning is the latter. He is and will be for at LEAST three more years the league’s best QB, hands down. But to answer your question, um…hell yes Manning for QB in ’11. Haha.

by bleedpurple426 on Nov 4, 2010 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree that Manning has at least 3 years as the best

But I don’t agree that McNabb is washed up. He plays for a bad franchise right now. No running game. Receivers aren’t that great either. Even Super Bowl coach Mike Shannahan is suspect.

I think McNabb with AD, Rice, Harvin and Shank would be very dangerous.

Sorry about that

Getting a little irritated about the Moss thing.. I’ll be better next time I swear! Oh and as to McNabb and Manning. One big difference, no one is stating or even trying to that McNabb might be the best QB to ever play the game.

Personally I say cut bait and switch it all up, get a new HC a new QB Kolb or a draft pick and start this franchise from teh ground up.

True

Notice that I didn’t mention them in the same sentence. But McNabb would be the best option to remain competitive in the immediate future.

It is not going to be Vick.

he is a starter over Kolb.
Let’s get Kolb. He is decent. McNabb is over….likely to be a Vike next year but he is done.

by izziefans on Nov 3, 2010 3:50 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, I think McNabb is declining pretty quickly with age.

Without his mobility he’s starting to look a lot more average the last year or two.

by CanadianViking on Nov 3, 2010 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions

McNabb will probably be the QB...

But Tjack does deserve a chance to compete for the job. He had nice touch on those two passes we saw in the last game, but that doesn’t mean it will translate into consistent success.

by Bjorno on Nov 3, 2010 5:47 PM CDT reply actions

One HUGE problem with this thread

TJack is not under contract for next year.

What makes anyone think he will just gladly sign on the dotted line for whatever contract the Vikings offer?

Consider that they brought in Sage and paid him about 2 million more per year to be behind TJack on the depth chart and did nothing to rectify the situation.

Also they have yanked him in and out whenever Childress was unhappy with his play.

If I am TJack I am testing the market. He knows that Chilly will be looking to bring someone else in next year and will do so at any point in time.

Why would he want to continue on that career path?

It is truly amazing that fans think he will easily be resigned or that they believe he is already signed.

And don’t even think about franchise tagging him.

Every day that passes makes it harder to sign him for next year.

Personally I do not care.

I just question the front office’s vision for next year.

It would seem to me that you would want to lock up TJack now so you have some security for next year. But that is just me. Call me crazy.

The writing on the wall thus far says TJack will be allowed to test the market.

heck they already had him on the market and got no offers.

by MarkSP18 on Nov 3, 2010 9:14 PM CDT reply actions

TJack will likely go most of the offseason without work

Probably won’t get signed until well into training camp, after a few preseason games when some other team’s backup gets hurt.

"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

Because I doubt there will be people lining up for him.

The main thing is this if we get a new HC I can see TJ going bye bye and him pulling in someone who understands his game plan. If Childress is still HC next year I"ll shoot myself in the mouth so I won’t have to care.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Nov 4, 2010 7:57 AM CDT up reply actions

My whole point is that the author of this thread is ASSUMING TJack will be here next year

And that is a huge assumption when you consider everything that has transpired with TJack.

Yanked in and out of the lineup.
Paid less than a QB lower than him on the depth chart.
Exposed to other teams in the free agent market.
No new contract offer yet.

I mean these are clear signs to me.

Chilly says one thing about TJack but does another.

Just because you CAN underpay a guy does not mean that you should.

Other teams are watching this charade too.

You know they are thinking that Chilly is trying to blow some smoke somewhere because if he really liked TJack that much he would have never EXPOSED him and he would have him signed beyond 2010.

I’ve said it for a long time now if Childress is still coach we are getting Tarvaris Jackson as our quarterback of the future. He’s getting his final shot with us. Although he isn’t under contract I bet we sign him again. Who knows we still might get to see him this year. If the Vikings fall out of playoff contention it makes you wonder if Childress will give the green light on Tarvaris Jackson and tell Favre to just hang up the boots. I hope we do get to see Jackson next year. Can we also stop calling Jackson T-Jax? There isn’t a X in his name and it reminds me of Mortal Kombat. He isn’t Tarvaris Jaxson. Although that could definitely be a name in Madden 11.

It’s also looking more and more like the Redskins aren’t going to offer Mcnabb an extension. It’s hard to believe they wouldn’t but after this benching you have to wonder if Mcnabb wants to still be there. He won’t ever become a distraction but he might just look at his options next year. Hooking back up with Childress and the Vikings offense is probably looking very good to him right now. It’d be interesting to see Mcnabb in purple but as a long time fan I wish we would just have consistency at quarterback even though we’d have success with all these old timers.

Personally I dont see why people want a QB like McNabb or Vick

We don’t need to keep trying for the prize. We don’t have it wether through coaching or whatever we aren’t there. Next year we’ll be further from it. We have a lot of talent in some seriously young players. Trade out Winfield and other players that will be out of the game in 2-4 years and pick up fresh new faces. Yes we lost a third round pick (which is terrible) but it’s a much better way to go in my mind than keeping on a path that doesn’t work.

Plus if we get a new coach things will change anyway. Please God give us a new coach.

by Grime on Nov 4, 2010 2:55 PM CDT reply actions

i'm not that big on getting mcnabb, but...

all things considered, he would be a good short term fit, imo (if we can’t lure another good free agent qb with experience). if we were to draft a solid qb prospect next year, then mcnabb would be a great veteran mentor who is in the waning years of his career. this would allow him and webb or whoever to have time to get into the pro system without getting thrown into the fire right away.

also, if we do re-sign t-jack, i think that the 2 of them make a good complementary pair of qb’s with similar attributes. plus, who else is going to be available? i’m not sold on kolb because he was handed the job, and now it has been yanked from him (just like t-jack’s situation). so i’m not sure that he is going to emerge like an aaron rodgers type of qb.

in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.

I don't want to annoint Jackson as next year's starter...

… without him putting some decent games together this year. I like how he interviews, but that intelligence has pretty much disappeared every time he has crossed the sidelines. It’s conceivable that he has improved, but I don’t want to gamble a season on a hunch.

That said, if we don’t sign him. I’d lay pretty good odds on our only QB on the books being Webb and I don’t see him being ready until his third or fourth year. In the mean time, I don’t think McNabb has enough left in the tank, Kolb will be too expensive to trade for, but there aren’t many good options out there. I’d almost be tempted to look at Culpepper once he is done in the UFL (or getting Perriloux back to the practice squad).

I don’t know if drafting is the answer either at this point. High round O-line picks seem to work out better so maybe if we can get a Trent Dilfer type player (Shaun Hill?), pick a good Guard or two and get our defence back on track, we might get away without having an elite QB.
