It's because, according to Ed Werder of ESPN.com, Vikings' owner Zygi Wilf was actually, truly considering keeping Moss and getting rid of Brad Childress instead.

In this case, Zygi has chosen badly, in my opinion. But I have a feeling that in about nine weeks or so, Zygi will see the error of his ways and correct things.

Can't say I blame him

He gave Chilly 16 mil guaranteed or something like that. Hard to cut a coach you just signed a fat extension to.

I can blame him

If I can tell that Childress is not a good coach, I have to think that Wilf has to realized that Childress is not a good coach. Even if Wilf thought he was a great coach, there are very few coaches that I can think of that you would want to give absolute authority to on the players that are on the team. If he had a few Super Bowl wins, then, maybe; however, he doesn’t have that qualification and in my opinion, he never will.

Now the truth is being told

According to reports, Moss told Wilf directly that Childress should be fired after the Patriots game. It is going to be really interesting if Moss starts tearing up the league with the Titans and the Vikings continue to struggle which is what I believe will happen.

Watch for Moss to go off with the Titans. I would not be surprised to see the Titans make a real run at the title now.

*Facepalms*

Seriously, I can’t believe Mr. Wilf considered keeping Moss & firing Coach Clueless, then doing the exact opposite. Keeping Moss/firing Clueless was the only way to potentially salvage the season.

Please USC. Keep Lane Kiffin.

9 Weeks?

We’ve seen zygi in action before. ..If Vikings lose on sunday, I’m expecting zygi to pull the plug on chilly after the final seconds tick off the game clock. Bye Bye Chilly!!!

Wilf had no choice

If he had fired Childress and kept Moss, it would have severely undermined the replacement coach’s ability to deal with Moss. I don’t know if he would have been better letting Moss go AND firing Childress, or if that would have brought about even more disruption for the team.

That said, I’m pretty certain Zygi is bringing in a Cannon fairly shortly. What better way to finish a circus than by using a clown as a human cannonball…

I just don't agree with this...

All he had to do is sit down with Moss and the new (interim) HC while that HC told him how he would behave under his tenure. Moss wants the ball, wins and a new contract. The threat of suspension represents a lot of leverage. Wilf has already blown it with Moss, and now every day he procrastinates is another lost opportunity. The sooner he grows a pair and acts the better, and by Monday it may be too late to save the season.

As soon as....

you highlight a single player as being more valuable than a coach, the effect is ruinous. Look at Oakland or Dallas where the owners get involved with that side of it. I wanted Moss to stay around, but the new coach has to have authority over personnel. I feel that Chilly lost his when he chauffeured Favre last year and was referred to as Chilly in the Favre’s first press conference, but if you keep a player who a coach has employed the ultimate sanction against, you’re immediately interfering in matters that should be in the hands of the coaches.

I think Chilly is gone as soon as the owner feels he has lost the locker room, but was in no position to assess that prior to today’s match.

Zigy WTF???

C’MON Man, Why would you ever keep that tool as a head coach and let Moss go, what a disgrace to the Vikings!!

More to this story.

According to what I read, before Wilf made his final decision, he met with several Vikings players to gauge their reactions to this situation.

Let’s face two very important things here: A.) Wilf has done nothing short to go all out for a Super Bowl run this year. B.) This is undoubtedly tied with a belief that a Super Bowl win will equal a new stadium.

With those two things in mind, I can’t believe the reason he DIDN’T fire Chilly was simply because of his contract. At this point Wilf seriously strikes me as the guy who, if keeping Moss and firing Chilly would right the ship, he would do it in a heartbeat.

Therefore- I have to believe that, in fact, the reaction that Wilf got convinced him that the team really didn’t want Moss around. Now, who these players were, how many of them he met with, etc. I haven’t heard yet. I’m going to of course naturally assume Favre was one of them. But even that, at this point, is in fact just really a guess. But again, if Wilf really did meet with some players, at least 50% of them had to support removing Moss, for whatever reasons, for Wilf to actually make this happen.

As to why that would be again we’re playing guesswork here. The whole catering incident was probably not that big of a factor. (In fact, according to the story about it, when the locker room manager apologized to the restaurant’s owner, he claimed that Randy ‘always does this whenever we bring food’… doesn’t sound like it’s a first time offense at that point.) Somehow, Moss had probably turned cancerous in the locker room- which surprises me considering the reports that he was the one to give the rallying speech in the Cowboys halftime.

Who knows? But again, Wilf HAD to have heard something from some key Vikings players to make him decide to stick with Chilly over Moss. I’m not saying I AGREE with that decision, but if players felt it was right, then it is hard to argue at this point.

Childress' expression when he saw he wasn't fired....

My life has been a trivial pursuit. Trivia: where three roads meet.

To me this incident speaks to the problem of not having one executive running the show

The Three Amigos “braintrust” structure leaves too much of an authority gap, at least above the coach.

From what I can tell Speilman and Studwell do good jobs, but Chilly would probably have not had the authority to spout off about waiving Moss if there was a GM above him.

Oh Please

Ziggy Wilf .. Is a joke .. He has no clue how to run a football team .. He has no clue how to cut his lossses and move on .. This crap Childress is pulling in Minnesota would not happen on any other team in the NFL .. (Except maybe Dallas Ha ha ) Wilf act like Childress is a superbowl winning coach .. This dude has won nothing.. Wilf is weak when it comes to firing weak coaches look how long it took him to fire Tice.. Who in my opinion was at least a players coach.. Come on little cartoon character grow some balls and pull the trigger and get rid of this bum … Don’t wait until he get rid of Harvin and we read the press clippings oh i delayed the cut of Harvin thinking about firing Childress ..
The team and the fans are done with this bum .. What does it take to see that ..

by VikinginCalifornia on Nov 7, 2010 9:47 AM CST reply actions

I'm not Defending the Decision at all

But, it took Zygi 30 whole minutes after Tices last season to Can him. Which would have been a good idea, had he made Tomlin the HC. Instead he brought in Childress, Brought in Chester And Shank, Than in the draft they took AP, a no brainer and Sidney (who I’ve said is the next coming of Cris Carter) we won games because teams had no idea how to stop AP.
Over these past few years (and especially last year) the talent on the team has overshadowed the Coaching and mismanagement. This year is a catalyst for the bullshit that was always there, we just seemed complacent to ignore it since we were winning.

Fire that ToolBag Childress, Like Yesterday! And Promote Lezlie to HC!

I believe Childress brought Tomlin to MN

He was an assistant with Tampa Bay at the time and had never been a coordinator until Childress named him DC.

Please USC. Keep Lane Kiffin.

30 mins

Yes 30 min after the season he fired Tice .. He should have fired Tice 30 mins after he got caught scalping superbowl tickets … It’s no excuse for Childress still being the head coach of this team .. period… Moss told him the truth .. This guy is your head coach .. lol .. Now Harvin knows the truth .. What team will he be playing on next week …
