Cardinals at Vikings: That Stuff Was Bananas. . .B-A-N-A-N-A-S
Try getting that song out of your head for the rest of the afternoon. Come on, I dare you.
Anyway, I'm still sort of digesting the win for the Vikings this afternoon. Don't get me wrong, I still want Brad Childress out of town on the next available flight, but this afternoon this team showed more guts and more character than they had for almost the entire season, and came back in a game that showed them with a big advantage on the stat sheet, but where they kept shooting themselves in the foot to the point where it looked like the game. . .and the Vikings' season. . .was all but over.
And, in case you haven't heard yet, Brett Favre. . .in his 293rd career NFL start. . .threw for a career high in yardage today, finishing the afternoon with 446 yards after completing 77% of his passes and connecting for two touchdown passes. . .one to Adrian Peterson in the second quarter, and one to Visanthe Shiancoe with less than a minute left in the game to send the game to overtime.
We'll have more on this game later on. . .for now, after all the drama that's surrounded this team this week, let's just kick back, relax, and enjoy a Vikings' victory, ladies and gentlemen.
Oh, and in case you're wondering where the inspiration for the picture caption comes from. . .here you go.

And Percy deserves the game ball
Week after week he amazes me. What that man does out there simply is awesome. Percy Harvin is quickly turning into one of our best players instead a valued role player.
What you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your entire rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I'd have to say
475 or so yards in the air trumps it IMO. W/o doubt, they both have been playing hurt. The other side of this is the team leader who never said die – they feed off his heart and determination. Harvin is unbelievable, but this game ball is old man’s.
Well, without giving 2 TDs to weak ass special teams play,
it would of been a different game altogether.
At least Harvin made up for it by throwing down 100+ receiving yards.
Agree on PH that is one tough kid
Oh and we are 2-0 in desperation bowls. We need to treat every game the rest of the year as a desperation bowl.

I LOVE the Vikings but...
This home game against the sinking Cardinals should have NEVER been that close. Brett and the team won the game not our slap-headed coach.
Oh so it was Childress
That fumbled the second half kickoff which was returned for a touchdown. And it must have been Childress that threw 2 interceptions. And it must have been Cildress that missed the tackles on that that kickoff return… ya youre right.

I have to agree
Childress made some of the Childress calls that drive me nuts, but his players were letting him down throughout the game. Peterson wiffing on blocks in the 1st half and penalties in the 2nd half are a couple of additional examples. The Vikings as a team (coaches and players) didn’t do well until the end of the game, but from that point on they played inspired football.
Skol Vikings.

Just another schism to deal with this year...
Whether or not Childress lost the locker room won’t be known until it’s all over. Thankfully none of the guys on the team quit on him. (You can’t say the same about Wade Phillips.) Winning cures a lot of things. If the Vikings can get on a roll, anything can happen. There is still a long way to go, and I am hopeful that the chaos is now behind the team. Whether or not he did it on purpose, Childress managed to take all of the pressure off of an underperforming team by his actions this week. They responded by playing 60 minutes plus. He will continue to wear a bulls-eye on his chest until it’s all over. Maybe all of this crap will turn out to be a good thing. I really hope so!!!

HELL YA!
This game shouldn’t have even been close! However, the boys showed some real character and teamwork to get the job done!
Great win for sure
but we need to remember it’s just 1 game, we are still a couple games back and today won’t mean a thing if they come out flat next week. We thought Arizona got luck a couple of times today, well next week we play the Bears, the kings of lucky bullshit

Amen Brother
Helluva win. Tremendous courage and heart by this team, especially in that 4th quarter when I thought the season was over. I’m proud of the team today!
"Skol Vikings! Let's win this game Skol Vikings!
Perspective on Win
The Cards came into this game giving up 104 points on the road in 3 games. That is basically a 35 point average. They have scored a total of 27 points in those games for a 9 point average. The Cards are not a very good football team. They are limited on the offensive side of the ball and they have a porous secondary. Plus, the Vikings were favored to win this game. Not only that, but check this link, even the Cardinal fans didn’t expect to win – http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cardinals/articles/2010/11/04/20101104arizona-cardinals-minnesota-vikings-scouting-report.html
So lets have some perspective on this game. This was a game the Vikings were not only expected to win but they should have won big. As it stands, they had to rally and barely put out a win in overtime. This is still not championship caliber play from a team loaded with championship caliber players. If a win in overtime versus a weak Arizona team saves Childress, then, we didn’t win anything but prolonged an incompetent coach who will continue to destroy this team from within. This team is simply too talented to be 3-5 after 8 games.

The Cards scored 10 offensive points.
That’s just 1 point above their road average.
Rarely do you get 2 special teams TDs so freely like that, the score doesn’t reflect the overall game at all :P

Very odd comments by Chilly in the post game presser
Did you see where he was asked how he was feeling, and he said “I don’t need a hug like Brett Favre does.”

I saw that just a few minutes ago.
That ticked me off. He needs to quit callin’ out Brett Favre and act like a professional. Even Brett was professional about it. Sure, he didn’t praise the coach but he didn’t specifically call him out either. He said something along the lines of “Do I always get along with my coach? Head coach? Offensive coordinator?” (basically naming different people, not just calling out chilly) Even though everyone knew he was talking about him he never pointed him out specifically. Which is good enough for me.

Glad they won kindof
Viking fan and football fan since the year before their first superbowl loss. If a loss would have gotten Chilli FIRED today and Dungy hired I am sorry they won. A reverse at their 20? A dumb play on 4th and goal. Good to see some screens and a pass to AP. This game just as easily could have gone the other way. The big difference from last week. We were not playing the NE offense on their last drive of regulation. We were playing the CARDS and were able to bet the ball back. They play like this against a better team they lose.
Bingo! Someone else got this as a B-I-N-G-O ! Way to say it ZZ
I thought I was the only one that sees that the reality is it was another 1st half game of give to AD , screw up a pass and punt. With a sprinkle of a score in there someplace
by CitrusFLViking on Nov 7, 2010 8:08 PM CST up reply actions
Hey Citrus...
Did you watch the game? A half of give it to AD, Screw up a pass, and punt? Maybe you were one of the folks chanting for us to fire the coach instead of paying attention.
Vikings First Down Plays in first half: 14 (15 if you include the kneel) Number of hand offs to AP: 3 Number of passes? 10. FYI: Number of those AP hand offs that went for 1st downs? 2/3, or 66%.
Yep. It was totally the play calling, not the turnovers that doomed us in the first half.
and a 6 yard run from Gerhart on first...
in case you’re doing the math.
I also count the plays he gets stuffed running over guard.
I watched it. It was still slow, unimaginative and uninspired until we fell behind. Did you watch the other 4 games we let this happen. It was a go nowhere 1st half. Peterson can rush for 100 yds in a first half but it means SH— if we can’t start pointing points up earlier.
I really don’t count the plays but I do see the results of the calls.I also see us getting stuffed when we try to run AD up the middle instead of inside tackle. Or run a sneak which I heard Favre couldn’t do but actually did a good job on it on a short yardage for 1st down at one point. I also saw rollouts and outside runs on short yardage go for nice gains you refer to but not used at the goal line.
by CitrusFLViking on Nov 7, 2010 9:36 PM CST up reply actions
Oh yah Here are a couple stast if ya wanna play numbers instead of reality
First downs by run -4. 1st downs by pass 22. Doesn’t sound like the run is the better option. 3rd down efficiency = 25% This was a good day for us. That25% better get better if we want to run for the playoffs.

great win for vikes, great game for favre, harvin, AP, and several others.. oh and great no comment when wilf was asked about chilly’s fate.. ideally , of course, chilly would be fired or worse, but until that happens, at least chilly must feel extreme pressure to win and thus to open up the play calling and be a bit less predictable..

Remember last year?
Favre stuggled out of the gate, and we beat an NFC west team 27-24 with an amazing touchdown by Brett!!!! After that we saw the offense really come alive. Amazing finish, lets hope it carries over into next week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And he's got Rice coming back in the next week or two.
That’s a big boost. Offensively, if Chilly can stay out of the way, this should be a very good club. They’re in a big hole, but in this conference if they get to 9 games they’ve got a shot at the playoffs. You’ve got tough games left against Philly, NYG, Detroit, GB and Chicago, but if they win 3 of those and find a way to sleep the rest, they’re 9-7 and in the playoff chase. This was a game they had to win and they managed it. Beat Chicago next week and you’re right back in it at 4-5.

Can Childress save his job or has that train sailed? :)
Seriously, could he possibly win enough games to stay put, or has Zygi had it with him. I think we’re all realistic enough to admit the Super Bowl ain’t happening but if he gets them to the playoffs, will it be enough?
Superbowl would be the only way
it’s HIGHLY unlikely I agree. But I think IF the Vikings get into the playoffs (which is going to be VERY tough), then anything could happen. Can you imagine the feeling they would have if they got in? It would be like coming back from the inch of death. But we’ll see.
Would it be enough for you?
I do not see how Wilf could possibly excuse the poor coaching job that Childress has done. As a Viking fan, I can not excuse it. Half way into what is suppose to be a team going for a championship and they are 3-5. The team has beaten Detroit, Dallas and Arizona. Total wins by those 3 teams – 6 with 18 losses.
The decision I believe that Wilf has made is to let this team play out the rest of the year and see what happens. However, I believe he is already planning to make the change at the end of the year. Similar to the way that the change was made with Tice. He sees the fans reaction to Childress, it has to be somewhat embarrassing to see the Fire Childress signs in the Metrodome and for the signs to be on display on national television.
In addition, when you look at the schedule, the effort that it is going to take in order for this team to get into the playoffs is simply going to drain this team of any hope of making a serious run even if they some how get into the playoffs. The Vikings go to Chicago, then, they face the Packers at home. The Packers will be coming off of a bye week so they are going to be fresh where as the Vikings will have to win a must game. Then, the Green Bay game is a must win just to have a shot. Followed up with a trip to Washington which has never been a easy place for the Vikings to play. Then, we have a Buffalo team which should be a win at home; however, the next game is against the Giants. Plus, we follow up the end of the year with 2 away games, one in Philly and the other in Detroit. So if the Vikings should obtain a wildcard birth in the playoffs, they would likely be traveling and playing on the road. With the Vikings schedule this year, it was important to be hitting on all cylinders at the beginning of the season to really have a real shot of going deep in the playoffs.
So I think Wilf will play out the string and in the end, Childress will be relieved of his duties at the end of the year. With Farve retiring, a new direction can be explained fairly easily.

Nothing short of the Lombardi
Chilly’s reach exceeds his grasp, he’s been promoted beyond his competency. He’s had over 4 years to learn on the job and continues to come up short. I’m convinced that he’s the ball and chain slowing down the team.

This was not a normal game
Look, everyone who is saying it isn’t impressive AT ALL that the Vikings needing miraculous comeback against a weak-assed Cardinals team is 100% right.
Everyone who is saying that they blew opportunity after opportunity in this game (twice inside the 2 yard line, no points) and shot themselves in the foot (kickoff return for TD, kickoff fumble for TD) is 100% right.
But everyone has to remember one thing. The mentality of the team going into this game HAD TO HAVE been terrible: unstable, depressed, angry, defeated, embarrassed. We all know how messed up things have been on this team. And when you are playing with those kind of distractions and negative emotions, shit like the stuff you saw today happens. And even Chilldress (who I totally agree should be fired) was inevitably distracted too, worsening his already bad coaching abilities.
So it is impossible to analyze this game in a normal context and say, “Bad execution here,” and “poor play calling there.” Did it happen? For sure. But under the circumstances today, anything could have happened (most likely bad). So the outcome that happened, in the way it happened, might have, in a crazy way (which is the way everything is with this team), might have been the best way for the Vikings.
I have no idea what will happen the rest of the way. But strange things can happen in football and in life. Strange things like how the Vikings won today.

Well said!
Good post. I think this win is a fittingly strange but up-beat end to an exceptionally bizarre and sad week.
A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.
Sorry I take it back
A fitting and up-beat ending would have been Childress getting fired and a win. As it stands I’ll take the win, because while firing Chilly would be cathartic it’s really too late for that now.
A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.
Now that you mention it
I think I used the word wrong. I think I would have to be the one taking the action in order for it to be cathartic. Punching Chilly in the mustache would be cathartic, seeing him get publicly fired (a la Mike Tice) would merely be satisfying.
A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.
And that is...1 win in 5 lackluster 1st half performances.
The only thing that changed was we won. That is why we are happy!
Still. it took us til the 2nd half to inch out an overtime win. Would you be satisfied if that was another lackluster 1st half performance being a loss. I think not.
We score 20 against the jets in the 2nd half! Miami? Again one half too late. Slow start in New Orleans, slow start in Greem Bay.
A never ending history of slow starts. ! YIPPEE! We are one and four in slow starts. Only difference – this time we win
Folks? Really? I can only say it took me awhile to wake up. So WAKE UP! Nothing has changed.
Chilly in a subdued interview is still trying to be funny and making himself the butt of jokes already. Saying “I don’t need a hug like Brett” WTH Chilly? You looked clearly like a man who is worried and should be kissing that mans 41 year old butt.
Great heart on the comeback
Yes, the team we played was poor. Yes, we shot ourselves in the foot over and over. Should it have been close? No. But……
This comeback shows that the team has found something…heart. They’ve played without it all year, but it looks like they’ve found it. I still want to get rid of Childress…yesterday. That being said, I think we need to sit back and savor the victory.
How many teams can come back from 14 points down with less than 5 minutes to play? Not many, no matter who they’re playing. So, let’s take from this win what we can and build on it. I saw in that last 5 minutes a team that was playing in a hurry up offense where their idiotic coach couldn’t neuter the players. Favre masterminded that comeback. He and the tremendous talent on that team deserve a tremendous amount of respect. That was awesome. SKOL Vikings!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am soooooo conflicted about this game
I am happy that we won but I am also sad that we are still in the hunt and that means that Chilly will remain. We are not good enough yet to really make a run. I still am not convinced that we are going to do any thing more than be good enough to save chilly’s job. That thought depresses me.
But hey….. we won and that feels great.

They need to win at Chicago and against Green Bay and get o 5-5 and we’ll talk. Keep thinking aboutthe loss to the Dolphins, shoulda had that one and 4-4 sounds a lot better than 3-5.

Yes
Lol! This was the second time in my almost 40 years of being a Vikings fan that I almost gave up on them. “Almost” is the key word here because it crossed my mind a few times, this last time more than the first. I made it through the Les Steckel fiasco, I can make it through this. Besides, my ancestors came over from Norway, being a Viking is in my blood.
I AM VIKING, HEAR ME ROAR!!!
I guess I should change my sig.
I am boycotting the Vikings until they fire Brad Childress.
just my 2 cents
well here is what I wonder about.
Look at last year if brett was doing alot of changing plays what did chilly think about that? I think that when brett came back this year chilly told him that I am the boss and you will do what I say or I will bench you and end your streak! and farve being a bit vain has been listening.
Now look at that 4th quarter playing in this game today I think brett said screw chilly I wanna win and these guys deserve to win so he started calling changes at the lin and made things happen. and on the D man 2 drive by az and both drives 2 sacks in a row?? someone woke up there!
now what needs to happen is I think wilf needs to call a meeting with brett the of coordinater and the d coordinater and favre and chilly and get them all to agree on some things. brett did great thing with the O last year and there is no reason why he cannot do the same this year if he has the option to change things a bit at the line Like he did last year..
this year has been bad because alot of people have been messing up not one person but I still think chilly needs to go as he is way to conservative for the current nfl.
favre took chances last year and it worked so I say start doing it again tis year like he did in the 4th quarter and we can WIN!
Just my 2 cents and it may not be worth even that much lol
I'm fine with this win, despite the score showing it was close.
2 Special Teams TDs does not mean the Arizone offensive did much of anything.
Fitz got some catches, that’s to be expected. But otherwise, they scored 10 offensive points.
I’m fine with that. The red zone follies NEED to be figured out by now. None of this 1st and goal on the 1-3 yard line, and no TD. None of this crappy o-line play resulting in free DL players coming in and laying the hurt on Favre which leads to red zone INTs. None of the PA calls in the red zone, only to ignore open guys who you could of thrown to (cmon Favre, TJack made this play last week!).
Still, the game wasn’t nearly as close as the score shows. I think it’s a good win.
uuuhhhh....
Still, the game wasn’t nearly as close as the score shows.
in the the viking-cards game on november 7, 2010…we were down 24-10 until 3:34 left in the 4th quarter.
we scored 2 td’s in those final minutes to miraculously force overtime. then our defense got us the ball back and we moved down for a game winning field goal…IN OVERTIME.
saying this game wasn’t nearly as close as the score is like saying that the saints manhandled the vikes in the nfccg last year, and that the vikes were merely lucky to stay in the game.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
And I repeat.
it was not that close of a game as the score made it out to be.
The Cards didn’t do really anything with the ball all day, minus some horrible tackling on a pass play for a TD. They got 7 points on a fumbled kickoff return, and 7 off the second half kickoff return. You won’t get those points but maybe once or twice a year.
The rest of the game, we were in control the whole time. The team played very good, and I’m just as confident in the win, as I would be had they won 27-0.
how about if the vikings won 27-0 in overtime?
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
Hurry up offense seemed to be the ticket
Hurry up offense with what seemed like Brett reading and creating the matchups that they needed to get the job done. This seemed to ignite a spark on both sides of the ball, Offense pulls together and shows what working as a team can accomplish and the D line steps up with pressure and coverage. Chilly and Bev need to take notice and adjust their play calling. Now if they could play with that same intensity in the first half the rest of the year there might be a chance to salvage the rest of the season. Chicago next week will really be the litmus test, then GB at home. Conference wins are the most important thing that they need to get any chance at the playoffs.
Bernard finally showed up and earned some of what they are paying him.
Percy deserves the most praise for his effort, clearing playing thru pain on every play.
Brett, 446 yrds carreer high, not bad for the oldest QB in the game.
Unbelievable Game
I listened to the improbable comeback on the radio while driving back to IC from a deer-hunting trip home to MN, as I assumed it was over once the fourth and goal attempt ended with an incomplete pass.
This victory does not change my belief and hope that Childress will be fired sooner rather than later.

Wow, to all the people defending Chilly I will give you one thing, and that is the players are also responsible for this horrible start. However, Chilly is the first one to blame. Yes, he has HORRIBLE play selection, commands no respect in the locker room, and makes stupid decisions like trading a 3rd pick for a player that has upset every team he’s ever played on, then releasing said player 4 weeks after getting him. I’m not one of these guys that puts all the blame on Chilly, but he should have NEVER been signed to an extension last year. I told all my friends and said it on several of these blogs that the Vikes didnt do well last year because of Chilly. They did well last year because of Favre, and the funny thing is that even tho Favre was the one who got Chilly his extension Chilly still throw’s Brett under the bus any chance he can get. So for you dolts that are saying, “What has Chilly done to deserve this criticism..” there ya go, 2 things. The first is he begs and pleads to get Brett onto the team and any time he makes a mistake that he has made 400 times in his career Chilly throws him under the bus on a public forum. The second problem is he trades for Moss with a 3rd round pick. The same Moss that has been in the league and upset coaches and teams everywhere he goes. Then he decides that he wants “good football players and good people” on his team?! I got one question Chilly, where were u the last 10 years of the NFL? Did you not ever see Brett Favre or Randy Moss play prior to getting them on your team? These are the things that upset me about Chilly more then anything else. When you have an owner that has proven that he will trade and open up the check book to help you build a team and you do the things Chilly has done then he needs to go.
Brett's a big boy
He’s got so many tire tracks on him from that proverbial bus, that he hardly notices that its on top of him anymore. Seriously, even if you think that happened (and I don’t) … it doesn’t matter.
Chile wasnt calling the plays that led to the comeback. It was Farve. That’s why Chile still took the cheap swipes. His QB sees football better then him and he doesn’t like it.

It was actually Bevell that called the plays
He has been for a while now. I guess he’s finally earning his pay as an OC.
"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

PLAYOFFS? Who said anything about PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS????
with apologies to Jim Mora. The truth is not much has changed. All yesterday did is provide a stay of execution for another week.
The optimism here is encouraging (who dat say Viking fans don’t support their team?), but this team ain’t going anywhere in the playoffs. Anybody that thinks otherwise is either delusional or under 12 years old.
Fact: for a team stacked with Pro Bowl talent, they are underperforming more than any other team except Dallas. They’ve lost 8 road games in a row. Have won 3 games this year—-against 3 crappy teams. The defense that used to be so stout against the run is not. Best pass rush in the league last year—-same personnel, so really, what happened this year boys???
I’ll repeat my post from above:
Four of our five losses are tight nailbiting road losses against teams that currently lead their divisions and have six wins apiece. A combined record of 24-10. And the final (home) loss is against a team that has turned out to be a good road team, they are 4-1 on the road, beating the Packers too, and only losing to the Ravens.
Sometimes when you play other good teams, they win, you know?
i wouldn't call us a bad team, we are a talented team that isn't finding a way to win.
we are losing to teams that are playing better “as a team”. and getting out coached. i do think that with this roster, we could be a 6-2 team right now. but we aren’t, the team is in constant turmoil and seems to be “dramatized” by it all. i still keep pointing to the coaching and leadership issues as the area that can (and should) be be responsible for getting the team in a position to find a way to win. the players did seem to wake up a bit at the end of the game sunday….i just hope that is a catalyst and that the players “take ownership” of the team success.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
man, that last line sounds pathetic....it must have been subliminally planted in my mind by espn.
