funny parody

I know what you’re doing here, and you have a very good point. We Vikings fans have gone overboard with our expectations a lot.

For example, here’s what a famous sports columnist just published. The Vikings could get lucky, and receive a miracle, and Joe Webb could be the next greatest quarterback of all time. Sid Hartman column. The thing is, this is not Sid musing idly. He really believes this. No irony at all in his column.

OK, about that “let’s keep our expectations at an appropriate level.” Yeah, Hartman is constitutionally incapable of that. He is wildly biased.

Sid Hartman has always been the overeager cheerleader. He is always claiming the Vikings are the greatest ever in something, or some player is about to become a superstar. There is no reason to believe any of this, as he apparently just makes it up. Meanwhile, we are trying to get to the Super Bowl and win our first one.

People, please. Joe Webb might indeed become the miracle quarterback. And maybe someone will invent a time machine, or a Mr. Fusion, as seen in “Back to the Future.” The chances of any of this occurring, however, are not very high.

Let’s all cut Joe Webb a break, and just expect him to be passable or decent. Maybe he will grow into a starter role for real, but at this point he is a completely unproven rookie. Keep the pressure off the young kid!

by medicineball on Dec 20, 2010 6:12 AM CST reply actions

Hear hear.

Expectations MUST be managed. (Yes, before anyone comments- I quite obviously get the joke of this FanPost.) People threw flowers at TJack’s feet like he was Caesar, and then when Favre returned for one last run, we celebrated like the Super Bowl was ours already. (I was one of them. I am guilty.) While I’m sure the inflated expectations were nothing for Favre, I will always kind of wonder if that didn’t get to TJack- he showed time and time again he couldn’t handle the pressure. Maybe if it hadn’t been there from the start, and maybe if he’d had some solid wins under his belt, things could have been different.

Michael Vick, Ryan Leaf, Derek Anderson, JaMarcus Russell- the same thing could be said of them. Tell them they are the greatest and G-d’s gift to their team, and they prove unable to cope with it, getting sucked into the lifestyle without, you know, really bothering to play good football. Or football in any sense, as far as Leaf and Russell are concerned.

Let’s face reality- Webb is a third string QB, drafted in round 6 at 199 overall. (No QB has EVER done well when selected at that spot. EVER.) But more importantly- he was drafted to play WR. He’s spent his season leading the second string offense in training. He’s athletic, and for the grand total of five minutes we’ve seen him on an actual NFL field, he does seem to have a swagger about him. He’s young, fresh, and mobile.

Altogether- we need to expect, at best, a solid second string performance from him, and we should be glad if we get that.

by KJSegall on Dec 20, 2010 9:15 AM CST up reply actions

Edit...

Vick did play good football. Just not good with puppies. Regardless, screwed the Falcons over.

Wishing Joe Webb and the Vikings all the best

I don’t expect him to be SuperQB (yet), but I think maybe, he could be…. up to him.

I do want to see the potential displayed in this game, though. I want to see the seeds of greatness in his movement and his choices and his completion rate.

We desperately need to know if Webb’s the man, so that we know who to drift in Round 1 next year.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,

To My Friend R4F

Want you to know this was not an attack on you or Brett.
Without Brett we would not have had the thrill of last year. It was good to have him.
This was a joke and parity on your posts and admiration for a great player.
You have been a good friend and you know I welcomed you from the start,
As for Joe. It was not a total joke. Even BF was impressed with him tonite. Not spectacular but said Webb reminded him of a young self with his competitve spirit.
If no other options and BF is healthy. Ya never know. But I think he is done.
But he made it fun for us despite a disappointing season.

AKA : Revenge4Webb

by CitrusFLViking on Dec 20, 2010 11:33 PM CST reply actions

Nicely said

I believe BF respects the kid..

He himself said “We need to get him on the field”

Just sadly, we had to wait for TJ to get to IR and Favre to get knocked out to get him onto the field… Favre’s suggestion rang true, but only to credit from his injury. Sad, I know, but could be a silver lining to the story.

What if… Webb was the next Favre-like QB? Sadly, I just don’t see him being the stubborn Iron-man style QB like Favre. But, he definitely could be just as good…

He is not!

He is a very misunderstood person and I find him to be generous and kind.He has played in our fantasy leagues and given away tickets to friends here rather than sell them off. Hee is excentric but I have seen far worse on SBN from A-hole trollers and obnoxious Big City fans who want to come and crap on a friendly group of fans here He loves Brett and that is OK. I hope he stays with us after BF. Remeber R4F, I never heard Bf priase or take interest in a young kid as much as he has with Webb. BF has been his biggest supporter. LONG LIVE JOE! He obviously has taken more time to learn from BF in one year than T-Jax has as an "experienced " QB in the last 2 years..

Loved this quote from an article on Webb's victory over Philly

It was not an athletic play by an extraordinarily athletic player. It was not a safe play sent in by coaches for a first-time starter who was running the scout team less than a month ago.

It was a quarterback play, pure and simple. And it was the first sign — perhaps of more to come — the smiling sixth-round pick from UAB might be more than a sideshow in the Vikings’ season-long circus.

“That third-down play at the end now, that’s a huge play under a lot of pressure against a very good defense,” interim coach Leslie Frazier said. “For (Webb) to step up in the pocket and make that throw — that’s a heck of a play, and one that you look at and say, ‘This guy has a chance.’”
