Brett Favre UPGRADED From Out To Questionable; May Play Tonight

You have got to be freaking kidding me.

After spending all week getting Joe Webb prepared for his first ever NFL start and the excitement that's come with it among the Minnesota Vikings' fan base, we get this from Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune just a few minutes ago on Twitter.

Brett Favre has been upgraded from out to questionable tonight. He will throw 2 1/2 hours before game time to see if he can play.less than a minute ago via TweetDeck

My reaction? Let me put this as delicately as I can.

No. No, no, no, no, and no.

I don't want to see Brett Favre out there this evening. I want to see Joe Webb out there this evening. There is no reason for Brett Favre to be out there this evening, particularly if he is injured and unable to play at full capacity.

I absolutely can't believe this. I'm having trouble even formulating the words to express how I'm feeling about this right now.

You guys try. Discuss below.

I can not agree with you more

There is no joy (or point) to seeing Favre limp around the field tonight. The excitement I have about watching tonight’s game is not that the Vikings will potentially get another win. My excitement is about getting a chance to see Webb play. Will he play well? Probably not — he’s a rookie and the field conditions will be terrible. However, he’s the only one of our quarterbacks that should be around next season. Let’s see what he can do, and at a minimum, let’s let him learn while we have the luxury of letting him learn on the job . This season has been lost from a playoff perspective. Let’s do the things we need to do to get stronger for next season.

Another thought just occurred to me

Perhaps Favre will be active so that the Vikings will actually have someone who knows the system and can play a bit if Webb gets hurt. I hope that’s the reason.

by kcskol on Dec 20, 2010 12:25 PM CST reply actions

Brett was just sad that he wasn't getting enough attention.

He couldn’t just sit idly by while his team was on national television! The story must be about Brett Favre at all times!

But yeah, just wear your stocking hat and stand on the sidelines. Tonight is our chance to see what Webb can do.

spoken like a memeber of the media

that just can’t leave him alone. I love it when the media who hounds him, sits on his lawn, reports that he has nothing to say, then turns around and accuses him of wanting attention. the coaches want him to play, the players want him to play, espn certainly wants him to play. Webb is a nice kid but he in no way gives the vikings a chance to win tonight.

It depends on how you view winning. A hobbled Farve gives us a better chance at beating the Bears tonight than Webb.

Joe Webb gives us a better chance to lose thus getting a higher draft pick next year(winning).

This

I think it’d be great if Favre played at least a series, if only so the fans could salute him in what’ll likely be his last home game as a Viking. Now, bear in mind I’m also in man-love with Favre, but I think it’s the least he deserves if he’s healthy enough to play.

In the meantime, here’s what I wrote about tonight’s game: http://nwontario.blogspot.com/2010/12/outdoor-football-in-minnesota-in.html. Alas, I’m in Toronto and I’ll be at the tonight’s Leafs/Thrashers game…but do I ever wish I could see an outdoor Vikings “home” game just once. Call me crazy; then again, being from Northern Ontario and having walked to school in minus-40C, I probably am. ;)

Second series and then walk away as a winner.

That would work. No need for him to start. No need for him to stay.

Or This

Good point. I don’t think the competitor in Favre wants Arthur freaking Moats to determine his final play. Also, on a strictly selfish note, I hope he plays January 2 in Detroit since I’ll be making the trek to that game.

by NWOntario on Dec 20, 2010 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

Yes....

he deserves a homefield round of applause, in uniform, out on the field. He has earned that. Plus, he could pull off a great performance, exceeding expectations, as he has done so many times before.
His career should NOT end on the sidelines.
While he may not finish, I do not think it will be due to injury. A solid drive or two ending in a score or two, with a final wave to the crowd would be perfect.

Just Say NO to Favre

Pay the Old Man to give advice and pep talks to the young fellas for the rest of the year, NOT to play.

As others have already said, tonight’s a chance to see what Joe Webb is made of, and that’s damned exciting.

If Favre plays, the best he can do is make it harder for us to get a top-rated QB next year, AND at the same time, keep us from figuring out who Joe Webb really is. Winning the game is a Lose-Lose-Lose proposition, since all it does is make it easier for the Packers to take the division. It doesn’t do squat for the Vikings.

don't see it's anything to get worked up about one way or the other

I’d enjoy seeing either one of them…also it may be jumping to conclusions that they are really considering starting him…unless as some have said as a farewell to Minnie fans. Last report I had heard made it sound highly unlikely he is capable of playing a whole game.

by lorenzo4 on Dec 20, 2010 12:44 PM CST reply actions

He should play one more time

He deserves the shot to play one more game. However, I hope this is just laying the groundwork for it being the last game, indoors v. Detroit. I’m concerned for his wellbeing if he forces it against a good defense in bad weather (what we are looking at this week and the next).

And as for Webb, I cannot see it making a difference for him. We already know he’s not our Starting QB for next year, he is way too raw.

by NonSequitr on Dec 20, 2010 12:53 PM CST reply actions

I don’t know… I’d say if we can still see Webb for about 3 quarters I’d be ok.

I think we’re frustrated with Favre cause we set expectations too high. All this drama brought us down. Then we wanted to try T-Jack, cause it can’t hurt to try, otherwise we wouldn’t know. So now try Webb. What if he does show some potential? Then we know.

I don't want the sack/int

to be his last play either.

I’m not sure he’s healthy enough to START tonight. But I’d rather have a QB who knows the offense in case the worst happens.

And I do think Favre should probably start the last 2 road games, unless Webb plays out of his mind tonight. Throwing him in against a team like Philly, esp, with its exotic blitz packages, would be suicidal.

by Shawn Gillogly on Dec 20, 2010 1:05 PM CST reply actions

I tend to agree with that -

As far as tonight goes- 4 or 5 inches of snow, plus about 23 degrees, I would think it would be real tough to get an injured shoulder/hand loose.

by abba7 on Dec 20, 2010 1:08 PM CST up reply actions

It is Fav-re's forte' though....

to do the unthinkable, and perform during the unfathomable odds of this game.

Like I said earlier, I think this is being done because he will start the game, only to leave after the first drive, so that we can give him his due adoration. Fav-re is better than Webb, but Webb is our shiny new toy. Brett knows that, and is pulling for Webb to do well and give us hope for the future (although I fear we will be let down in that regard).

With that said, the 50th anniversary game is the perfect storm for Fav-re to play a drive, complete a few passes, and remind us why he was a special part of the NFL, and a much appreciated piece of the Vikings….Let’s not ruin this because we are freaking out, Webb will play the majority of the game, and we will get our fill of both.

Let’s be real MN fans, and cheer Fav-re on his way out…He deserves that much.

Well Well

I am torn about this also. Does a healthy BF give us the best chance, yes. But a BF that make all of the throws, and I mean the long ball- something his injuries have limited with this entire year, then no. I think he should be the back-up tonight. Brady proved that last week with exposing the Cubs secondary. I think he is deserving of dressing for the last game, but should only play if Spiderman is hurt. JMO.

I don’t want to watch Favre stink it up tonight. I would much rather see what we’ve got with Joe Webb. I’m not expecting anything great, just not pure boneheaded play. I would be happy with part boneheaded play. It’d still be better than T-Jack

by ccrunner on Dec 20, 2010 1:24 PM CST reply actions

Agree with Chris...

And for reasons deeper than just the desire to win or the likelihood of winning this game.

The Giants game last week, while a disaster thanks to both the on-field performance and the atmosphere of the “home game” was our first one without either Favre or Childress. It was a combination of “OK, as you can see, we’ve hit rock bottom in just about all phases of our franchise – but also we can put that episode in the past and begin to really look forward to the future and the changes that need to be made.” No more being entirely wrapped up in the drama of the past 12 months, we could actually start envisioning the future.

Joe Webb starting the Bears game outdoors in front of the Viking faithful would mean we could truly embrace what we can look forward to and quit rehashing all the crap that has gone wrong. Is Joe Webb our starting QB going forward? Highly doubtful. Do I necessarily like our chances of winning tonight? Not really. Will Favre and Childress both being gone mean all our problems are solved? Not in the least.

But tonight was going to be a nice feeling of transition. With Favre around, the stench of the past 11 months still hangs over the field. Not that everything that went wrong recently is his fault, but it’s time to at least find SOMETHING to be excited about for next season. Brett Favre can’t provide us with that.

by TEXVIKE on Dec 20, 2010 1:25 PM CST reply actions

Following this line of thought....

the stench has emanated from most of the team this year, therefore nobody should play except for the practice squad.

It’s not about us, or any of the percieved stinkiness of the 2010 Vikings.

Not to sound like a broken record, but seriously, let’s give Fav-re his due for a drive or two and watch the Ole Gunslinger go out in a blaze of glory.

Sorry but....

Favre has said either he’s all in or not. Don’t confuse the issue. No matter what folks say, the guy only wants to play to win..period. If he can’t then he won;t. He’s not interested in playing one or two series (those are his words). If he’s healthy, I want him to play.

by NCviking on Dec 20, 2010 1:37 PM CST up reply actions

No apology needed...

he would be all in IMO if he went out in style, played a little and graciously passed the torch to the younger, completely inexperianced Webb.

It’s good for the Vikes on the 50th anniversary, and I for one would find it inspiring to see the Ole Gunslinger one last time…

by NCviking on Dec 20, 2010 1:44 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed...

Of course, we could debate that Fav-re hasn’t been healthy since 1992…but Fav-re healthy.

Either way, it would be a nice story. All of this is merely speculation based upon his game time status changing. It could all just be a ploy to throw the Bears plans/preperation off.

I will just hope that it is a historic win on a historic night. I wish I could be at the game…Oh well…

Play him

If he is able to play he is by far the best the Vikes can put on the field. The weather is going to be bad along with the field conditions, so he will not be throwing deep balls just handing the ball to AD. Arm strength due to the injury will not be an issue. The man has been beaten and broken since coming to MN and had always got up until the hit in Buffalo. Let him play and finish his career on the field in the most perfect of storms.

to be worrying about draft position and building for the future. There’s plenty of time for that in February moving forward. Don’t tell me that moving up one or two spots in the draft is going to make a world of difference. I love watching every game win or lose. I don’t have NFL network and here in Des moines, they didn’t have last game on Fox so i had to go over to a buddy’s house to watch the game and he booted me so he could go to sleep halfway through the fourth(he’s a bear’s fan) and that sucks that they’re having a bad season, but i’m never going to root against them or even concede to the idea of us losing is better for the franchise.
