Steve Hutchinson to IR, R.J. Archer Activated, Rhett Bomar Added
Since we got our weekly dose of drama fairly late in the piece this week, I want to make sure that a few of the roster moves the Vikings are making don't get lost in the shuffle.
The Vikings are celebrating Steve Hutchinson's recognition as one of the fifty greatest Vikings of all time by. . .placing him on injured reserve today. To fill Hutchinson's roster spot, the Vikings have purchased the contract of quarterback R.J. Archer from the practice squad and have added him to the active roster.
The Vikings have also signed quarterback Rhett Bomar off of the practice squad of the New York Giants.
So, just to clarify. . .as of this point in time, this is the Minnesota Vikings' quarterback situation.
They have Brett Favre. . .who, barring getting struck by lightning, getting hit by a car, or anything of that nature, will start. They have Joe Webb. They signed Patrick Ramsey earlier in the week, they've moved Archer off of the practice squad and onto the 53-man roster, and now they've signed Bomar as well.
Let me put that another way.
Unless I'm misunderstanding something or seeing something incorrectly. . .the Minnesota Vikings currently have FIVE quarterbacks on the 53-man active roster.
In whose world is THIS a good idea?
The events of the past two or three hours are seriously making my head hurt.

5 QBs
5 QBs = 1 QB injured per quarter and 1 back up. Maybe the Vikes actually think the Gopher field is more dangerous than theyare letting on.
Here's what's gonna happen with the QB's
Tuesday morning, Ramsey will be cut. I look at this as akin to coming home with a Coyote Ugly girl from the bar, and waking up in the morning. Your first thought was “whew, what a terrible dream I had, because that girl was fu—” and there she is next to you…close to bald, snaggle toothed, and about 612 pounds.
Favre is gone in three more games, so now you’re down to Webb, Bomar, and Archer. Webb will get his audition, and Bomar and Archer will be OTA and training camp fodder heading into the off-season. So you can say the Vikings are getting proactive on the off-season already. Woo hoo!!

Not Bomar!!!
As a Giants fan, I must say it hurts to lose Bomar… not because he was any good mind you, but because he had reached Chuck Norris levels of fame on Big Blue View. We always said that if Eli went down, Bomar would carry us to victory, and when he won the Super Bowl he’d hold the Lombardi over his head and shout: “Bomar play football! Bomar win Super Bowl!”
I’ll miss you Bomar…
It's okay
In the end. . .Bomar just pawn in NFL quarterback game.

Sage
If he was Spielman’s darling, then it’s possible that he could be brought back to compete for the starting role again, too. I hope that the team will look for someone better, though.
Why?
Sage is the perfect type of guy to have when bringing along a young QB. He’s good enough to start and hold down the fort. Old enough to show a guy the basic ropes before he steps up into the pro game. Competent enough to win now while the young guy gets his feet under him.
And if the young guy lights the world on fire? There isn’t the same egg on your face look as with a McNabb of “if you were so sure on this guy why did you bring in someone like Donovan?”

Not perfect
I would prefer my young QB to learn from someone with a much lower INT%, and I’m not so sure that a team could win much with Sage as their starter. That’s why McNabb is the closest thing to a perfect solution for the Vikes.
There is no egg on anyone’s face if the Vikes have McNabb performing very well on a winning team with a promising rookie on the bench. In fact, that is the ideal situation to be in. There are no guarantees in this business, so the GM should always try to bring in the most talent possible.
Sage is arrogant
I don’t think he fits in with the high character ideal that we hopefully are continuing.

Peterson reported inactive
This would be sad, generally speaking, but I am actually happy about this. I have been worried that Peterson would get injured on that frozen plastic field.
I dont think we should play our stars.
No sense in risking injury for AP, Harvin, Rice, Hutch, Kluwe, etc.
