According to ESPN, the league has fined Brett Favre for his lack of cooperation in the whole texting scandal, but "could not conclude that Favre violated league policies relating to workplace conduct."

More on this later on. In the meantime, allow me to channel my inner Chris Jericho here for a second. Riggggggght

The NFL spent months investigating all parties, hired a forensics team to digitally analyze the data, met with both parties, and found no wrongdoing. OFF WITH HIS HEAD simply because you don’t like that guy.

Bottom line- Can’t conclude Brett did anything wrong, CAN conclude he didn’t help much- Fine for putting himself and the NFL into a negative light for so long. Fair is far.

Yeah, because suspending a QB who has probably taken his last snap ever would TOTALLY have sent a serious message.

Yeah, initially I thought she handled this well, since she did not leak the original pics to the media—it was one of her acquaintances who did that.

But then she started issuing threats about what she would do if the NFL did not act swiftly, and my respect for her went out the window.

The victim is Deanna and the kids. We DO NOT KNOW what Sterger is hiding so before you start ranting about the poor victim, lets not forget that Sterger isnt totally innocent on the matter. Okay, let's assume that Sterger is as guilty as sin

Who cares? She’s not the one who’s married with children. Favre is in the wrong here no matter how you slice it. And his wrong is way worse than anything you might want to pin on Sterger. Regardless of her motivations, this whole mess would not have happened without Favre being a cheating bastard. And, while I’m not surprised by the league ruling, it is very tough to understand how they could not find him in violation.

so… the NFL couldn’t prove anything…

Sterger didn’t cooperate in the investigation either… stonewalled, got legal protection… the NFL can’t fine her for ‘not cooperating’… they can’t touch her

What does this say about the employer/employee relationship? Because Favre is an employee of the NFL, does that terminate his personal legal right to not incriminate himself? If the technical forensics did not prove it, then you have no proof at all… so… let’s ‘fine’ him??
This is a classic case (imho) of ‘nothing happened, but we got bruised in the media and our stellar reputation might have been hurt, so you’re gonna pay buddy… not that we really have any power over you per say, except the ability to ’fine you".

and my point is that taken on the whole, can you really say favre has been much more responsible than her?

by Glenn'sYank13 on Dec 29, 2010 4:28 PM CST up reply actions

I guess that means he should run for public office.

First, who cares if he was addicted to painkillers in the past? Does that somehow make him a bad person?

You try playing in the NFL and get by without any painkillers. He had a prescription for them, became dependent upon them, then pulled himself out of the addiction. I would call that admirable.

Second… So what if favre was an alcoholic? The key term is “Was”. My mother “Was” an alcoholic, then she quit and raised me and my brother by herself.

Third… Favre is a man. Men have wandering eyes. Deanna knew about his infidelity and chose to stay with him, that is her choice.

Fourth… What professional football player is not an absentee father? Are his kids well-fed? Do they have a roof over their heads? Do they have everything they could possibly want, except for maybe their dad being home every night?

Fifth… You get no argument from me.

Get off your high horse and piss off.

by Bjorno on Dec 29, 2010 1:28 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Bjorno, you can put down GY13 without smearing all NFL players and all men in general.

A lot of men have jobs that take them away from their families for short periods of time. That does not make them absentee fathers.

And also, because Favre can’t respect his marriage vows, don’t assume the rest of us don’t as well.

I mean GY13 is such an easy target to hit you don’t need to use a sawed off shotgun to do it.

by NorthLeft12 on Dec 29, 2010 4:32 PM CST up reply actions

The point was not to smear all...

But to point out that there is a wide range of behaviors that should not automatically label a person as “Bad”.

Do you disagree that most men, confronted with fame and money, would be likely to consider wandering? Even go through with it?

Let’s be realistic. If the woman of your dreams was throwing herself at you, you would have a hard time saying “No”.

The absentee father comment was merely pointing out that most players have “Homes” and “residences”. The difference being their “home” is where the wife and kids stay, and the “residence” is where he stays during the football season.

Rather than uprooting their family when the season starts, they keep a home near where they want to call home and keep a residence in the area where the team plays.

Favre being gone for 9 months of the year does not make him an absentee father.

I’ve never been within 5,000 miles of the East Coast, let alone lived there. So I’m hardly an ‘East Coaster’.

I am, however, a Patriot fan. And at the time Brett Favre was allegedly harrassing and/or sending PXTs to Sterger, he was a member of the AFC East rival Jets. I take as much interest in the goings-on and locker room intrigues of the Jets as I’d imagine Vikings fans pay attention to Packers and Bears issues.

Not going to argue that, but my comment was in response to NorthLeft12’s comment :

And also, because Favre can’t respect his marriage vows, don’t assume the rest of us don’t as well.

In which I was merely stating that I was not trying to issue a blanket statement saying that all men will wander if given the opportunity when I said:

Third… Favre is a man. Men have wandering eyes. Deanna knew about his infidelity and chose to stay with him, that is her choice.

This was part of a conversation, and you simply took my comment out of context. It’s ok, happens a lot on these sites.

That we don’t know if Sterger responded to any of the texts or not.

She says she didn’t, but really? Are we supposed to believe that she ignored him to the point where he felt he needed to toss a hail mary?

I mean, there had to be SOME interaction between the two in order for him to pull out his purple pride and snap a pic.

But we will never know the truth.

Perhaps not ideal, but you can’t forget that by all accounts it was a mutual decision by both Brady and Moynahan without either of them realising she was pregnant.

Only a self centered dufus would confuse moving on after getting dumped by you with “cheating.”

You truly are like a six year old, whose parents split up for obvious reasons, but you can’t understand the complexities of it, or how they can still go on treating the other with respect, for your immature mind there is only love and hate, with no space in between.

he retired or basically implied he would, then begged them to come back? and then kept doing the same thing for a couple more years? then they had enough, knew they needed to worry about the future and the fact that rodgers was about to begin his final contract year and may walk? and the fact that favre insisted he had to start, not just fight to see who the better qb is?

The Favre thing is over. You’re angry because he didn’t get the book thrown at him because nobody could prove anything. Most of us Viking fans disagree with you. If you have a problem with that, this is a “you” problem, not a “me” problem or an “us” problem.

That he has an existence and desires that does not end once he is traded and has to take that uniform off?

Is this really that hard to understand, that there are human beings under those helmets? That were not born with those helmets on? Seriously? If so … do you still hate Woodson because he was a Raider for many years, and Reggie because he was an Eagle?

who enabled Favre to be the so-called "egomanica? Packer fans, including myself put him on that pedestal that all athletes strive for. You give your kid the audience, he or she will put on a performance. Plain and simple. But of course, Packer fans won’t blame themselves for how their child acts, they will blame the child.

You say he tried to screw the team over? Who tried to pay Favre 20 million to stay retired? Who hired Ari Fliesher (yes spelled wrong no doubt) to handle damage control? Was Favre an egomanica? Sure he was. But who enabled him to act this way??? We, the Packer fans current and former. We labeled him as the savior of the Green Bay Packers. Not since Bart Starr did we have a future HOF quarterback. And now you want to bring up revenge? If the FO was so innocent, why did Favre want revenge???? DId you ever ask yourself that? I am not saying Favre is not egotistical. But what I am saying is that there are many other players in all sports who are just as bad if not worse than Favre but they seem to get a pass.

let me get this straight

Favre and his lawyers meet with the nfl in oct. favre’s lawyer tells brett exactly what he can and can not answer. the nfl doesn’t get answers to all their questions so they determine that even though there is no evidence he did anything, the nfl fines him for listening to his lawyer. according to adam scheffter, if you want to beleive him, the nfl fined him becuase his version of the events didn’t match her version. now that is hilarious.

I hadn’t thought of that. Not that I think favre will press this, but … does the NFL really have the right to do this? Fine a player for not answering questions when there is no established legal obligation that he ever had to?

had not thought of it that way. still, I think Favre is probalby happy that he was never found guilty of anything, and will take it at that.

Twenty years ago, Sterger would have been "Penthouse" material

I see your point, but “Playboy” is no longer the gentleman’s magazine of my youth that only featured the finest, artistic, and most tasteful nudes of women who were darn near physically perfect. Sterger never would have caught Hef’s eye in those days.

Back then, it was “Penthouse” (do they even exist anymore?) who specialized in pictorials of women from public scandals; “Hustler” was more about showing us the trailer-park MILF in all her glory.

Today, though, “Playboy” is in serious financial trouble due to increasing irrelevance, due largely to the Internet. I always envision “Playboy”, like many newspapers, watching the dawn of the on-line era much like the dinosaurs watched the meteor approach.

Now, Hef will do what he has to do to keep his lumbering Stegosaur of a men’s mag alive, and that means featuring C-list scandal starlettes like Sterger who never would have made the mag twenty years ago.

Wow. So the league thinks that Brett Favre is a liar.

Who would have guessed that? I mean, besides anyone who’s been paying attention to his career since 2007 (at least) and who isn’t blinded by his star power and football abilities.

In the end this is the anticlimax this story deserved. A star football player tried to use his status to get laid! Stop the presses!

I mean, seriously, half the people on SBN probably did the same thing after they caught a big pass in a highschool game, and the other half wish they had. Is he a pig? He appears to have been in this instance? Did he try to cheat on his wife? Sure looks like it.

Is any of this any of my business? Sure doesn’t seem like it.

Frankly I’m more bothered by the fact that the league waited until the day the statute of limitations on the sexual harassment charges expired to issue their decision than I am by his conduct, particularly if the photos can’t be pinned on him (since that’s the only potentially criminal behavior he engaged in). Turns out Goodell’s quick-justice-tough-guy act doesn’t apply when the league might potentially get its ass sued. Then it’s drag your feet until suing gets a lot harder.

But whatever. Nothing to see here…. move along.

yes, the nfl can fine him for anything under the conduct policy. the fact is it isn’t brett’s responsibility to make the nfl’s investigation easy or quick. no half way decent lawyer would allow him to say much. I would bet his lawyer would only allow very specific questions and he was limited to yes or no. you never elaborate or give out additional information. it’s JS job to bring her evidence and brett’s only to respond to it.

by FlFan on Dec 29, 2010 6:42 PM CST reply actions

What a chicken shyt cop out of a decision by Goodell.....

How was Favre not forthcoming? He met with league officials and said he texted her, but did not send the photos. Sounds like he cooperated to me. Is he supposed to tell them what they want to hear? If Goodell had any stones, he would have said something along the lines of, “We may have a married man who was hitting on a not too resistant female. While it may be abhorrent behavior to Brett’s family, I find nothing here to justify a penalty.” This ruling stinks, IMHO.

Is now Sterger and Favre can settle this where sexual harassment matters should be settled.

Where Favre can actually rebut her claims and/or prove that the advances he made were not “unwanted,” as Sterger claims.

And they can do it far away from the NFL.

by Christopher Gates on Dec 29, 2010 8:10 PM CST reply actions

I'm nost sure they can...

… the statute of limitations passed today, according to the lawyer who runs PFT (or maybe yesterday). Goodell had a promise that the league wouldn’t be sued if they found Favre had violated the harassment rules. PFT speculated that Goodell would wait until the last minute to announce that no violation had been found and then hope that the suit wouldn’t be filed before the deadline.

So unless Sterger’s lawyer had the documents drafted and ran down to the courthouse (either before or after his press release), or the lawyer that runs PFT is wrong, the league dodged the lawsuit and there will be no day in court.

That suggests one of two things: either the evidence Sterger’s lawyer had isn’t nearly as strong as he suggests OR, Sterger’s lawyer is incompetent and he just got played by Goodell.

I’m not sure I care either way.

Woman claims Favre sent unwanted texts and pics 2 years ago, same woman sends those same unwanted texts and pics to friends.Everyone got coked up and laughed about it,woman wakes up from said Coke binge and feels she has been used as a sex object and wants something, maybe better pics.
Favre spends what 17 years with a team, gets booted wants satifaction, goes Jets finds semi satifaction in N.J. goes Minny finds Total Satisfaction 1 YEAR then regresses after.
Case in point both trying revive careers after getting boot from employers, both attention getting whores,1 married,1 not,1 has breast reduction surgery other has arm surgery. Both finding it hard walk in life 1 from imbalance due to surgery on reduction, other from hits in game. Both suffering career ending blows and contemplating riding a tractor into sunset 1 with clothes other in wranglers.
Gist of this story both should have quitt last year and didnt, both tarnished their names for nothing, and both hoped to ride albeit diff career highs into that storied book fable ending. And both look pretty god damn stupid.

Favre should definitely appeal and not pay that fine

unless they can come up with some evidence against him—which they obviously can’t. Could you imagine a judge in any courtroom saying “we don’t have any evidence that you are guilty but we THINK you are lying, so you’re guilty”? Goodell is a little tyrant and a millionaire bureaucrat. He has been given some power and he’s going to use it, that’s all.

Favre may very well be guilty, and I think he probably did do it, but this is still America and we do advertise that you are innocent until PROVEN guilty.

by Bodysuit Man on Dec 30, 2010 5:33 PM CST reply actions

He's probably happier with the $50k fine

Even if Sterger’s camp only have dubious evidence against him, court fees, travel (I’d imagine it’d be filed in NY, where the evidence would supposedly be), time off, and general bad publicity would be far worse to Favre than the $50k fine. It’s basically a lame version of an out-of-court settlement, but Sterger doesn’t get the cash.

At the moment he can just deny the pics are his, have a slap on the wrist for looking like a sleazy sportsman who hit on a woman, and move on with his life. A courtcase would mean he’s in the news for a lot longer, and there’s the risk that Sterger can prove said pics are his, etc. At the moment he still has plausible deniability.
