First Grumblings of FA Discontent
According to this article in USA Today, Ray Edwards is more than a little bit unhappy with the Free Agency system, this year's contract situation, and Goodell!
Trying to compare his salary, as part of a 60-man team, with the league CEO's salary, is also pretty ridiculous. I'm not sure if this is part of the liberal anti-corporate wave that's been sweeping hte country, but when you compare Goodell's salary with what a typical corporate CEO is making, $9M doesn't seem out of line.
On the plus side, another comment that Ray made on getting some payback on the Saints, was reassuring. I want to know, with certainty, that when the Vikings next meet the Saints, the guys on D will be looking to even the score and rack up a few extra points of their own.
What does everyone think about Ray's salary, do you think he should be tendered more than $3M?

I feel the need to be a douche and point out...
He’s a DE, not a DT, as stated in your first option.
/hates being “that guy,” but nonetheless felt compelled
//apologizes
Skol Vikings!
Woot Woot!
Yep!
You’re right, no argument there! My typo, dude. That’s what I get for writing between tasks at work, lol.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
He'd a good player and I'd love to have him
however he’s #24 with a lot of other people on the sack chart and is way farther back for tackles for loss (Jared Allen had 97 negative yards against the enemy) He’s also playing next to Kevin Williams who is a beast and will make sure Ray never gets doubled. If Ray wanted big time mony this year he needed double digit sacks at least.
Finally, we just can’t put that much money into out D line, and honestly he over the rest can be replaced. Now if Phat Pat retires then you have some extra money to play with and I would keep Ray.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Reassuring Yes, But...
Didn’t he also go on to say that he really didn’t pay any attention to the offense when they were on the field and had no idea that Brett was taking the late hits as bad as he was? Come on Ray! Your quarterback is taking a pounding out there and you had no idea? You say that if you had known, you’d have hit Brees more often? While I also feel that it’s reassuring that the defense plans to settle the score the next time the teams meet, I have a little reluctance to buy his story of why he didn’t try it the first time. That being said, I do hope he comes back and shows that his improvement at the end of the season wasn’t a fluke.
Actually I can understand it
When you get to the side lines, depending on the game you can have a lot of things going on (other than just trying to get your wind back) coaches in your face trying to tell you ways around what the other players are doing or asking you questions about what your seeing out there. That was a pretty intense game I’m betting the defense was firing on all cylynders trying to map out their best bet on stopping the Saints (which we did fairly well).

I hope Edwards proves me wrong
I would have no problem eating my words here.
I am one who’s been critical of Ray during the season because the other 3
Norsemen were drawing so much of the attention away from Ray yet it
seemed the only sacks from that side happened when Robison came in.
I truly hope it’s a situation were he is hitting his stride in which case I’ll happily
eat my words.
But if he was only playing at the end for FA $$$$$………..trade him.
Robison is ready!
A bird in the hand is worth about 10.99 at KFC and makes me lick my chops
Yummy!!!!!
Restricted free agent
If the Vikings make a top tender to Ray Edwards, and he signs with another team, the Vikings get the 1st and 3rd round picks from that team. For example, say the Vikings make that offer (about $3million per year or something) and then Jacksonville signs him for $10 million per year, the Vikings don’t match, and he goes to the Jags. The Vikings get the Jags’ first round pick (#10 or #11 overall) and their 3rd round pick.
As a business, the Vikings are not rolling in money. They can’t go out and offer him huge money. From a business perspective a team like the Jags simply cannot sign him away if they would lose a first round pick or more. I could see the Vikings offering Edwards a long-term deal at $5 million per year. From Edwards’s business perspective, however, he must see himself as potentially worth more. He might choose to stay with the Vikings as a restricted free agent for another year, and then be an unrestricted free agent after that.
If Ray Edwards is playing well in 2010, continuing to be consistent, the Vikings might offer to extend him for a long term deal during the season. That’s what I see happening.
No team is giving up a 1st for Edwards let alone a 1st and a 3rd
Come on dude, would you give up a 1st & 3rd for Edwards if you a need a DE?
Would you give up a first for Edwards?
There is no chance in hell that any team will give up that much for him.
A second round pick is where it may get done. Even that is iffy.
If the Vikings slap the highest tender on him which would pay him what you said then I doubt he will want to sign an extension with the Vikings no matter what they offered. IMHO.
He is already upset now. He will be underpaid at 3 mil this year.
And he is one play away from a career ending injury.
If Edwards is all that and a bag of chips then why haven’t they signed him to an extension yet?
How can they let his contract expire without a new deal in place if he is so valuable?
Since when did the Vikings become an organization that does this?
Is this what they are going to do with Rice & Greenway?
They need to get something for him now because next year they will get nothing and they damn sure are not going to put the franchise or transition tag on him. I will bet money on that.
They cant afford to it.
I think that they should trade him to Tampa for their 3rd #67 and 6th #162 if no team signs him for a second round pick.
I think that can get it done.
Just to clarify...
He’s a restricted free agent. The Vikings could put first round tender on him, and if someone else signs him and the Vikings do not match, they get that teams first and third (I believe? Maybe just first). Regardless, it works that way down from first, second, third, etc. I think. Football is still dead to me.
Skol Vikings!
Woot Woot!
The real question: at what level should the tender Ray?
I’d say a 2nd or 3rd rounder would be enough.
Here are some notable 3rd round picks by the Vikes:
WR Nate Burleson
RB Moe Williams
DT Gilbert Brown
LB Carlos Jenkins
WR Jake Reed
DE Al Noga
DT Henry Thomas
C Kirk Lowdermilk
T Tim Irwin
DB Tom Hannon
G Wes Hamilton
LB Don Hansen
TE Ray Poage
QB Fran Tarkenton
There should be a DE who could replace Ray Edwards in the top 3 rounds this year. The Vikes probably can’t afford to match any offers on Edwards or sign him to another contract, so they may as well tender Edwards at a level that will garner interest and bring in a 2nd or 3rd round pick.
I find it tough
to pay ray to much, Brian R played a lot less, maybe 1/4 of the minutes and had 4.5 sacks and 10 tackes. I think Ray is a good DE but I am not sure if he is a great DE, put him on an average D line and I think his sack total drops a bunch. He may feel he is worth a lot more but one decent season (not great) does not give the pay he expects. I say not great because everytime AR felt pressure he rolled to Rays side and when he did that Ray never got there. He just did not contain very well. At the end of the season he was playing a lot better, and I hope he can do that again all year, then he can demand the pay he wants. Until then I do not think so.
it is better to be thought of as dumb then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Ray was complaining about the system- Not the Vikings
“That’s what we fought for with the whole Reggie White thing was to have free agency and this is not free agency if you sign for four years but you’ve got to serve two more. That’s not free agency,” he said.
The players have been fighting for free agency since the NFL labor issues started in 1956. The owners hate it when a player can simply shop his services to another team. Ray was suppose to be an unrestricted free agent. Now he is a Restricted free agent. The difference is he will be forced to accept the Viking offer for one year instead of being able to freely shop his talent around. He is complaining because the lack of a labor agreement changed his status (along with 200 other players).
He isn’t trashing the Vikings. He is simply saying what 1500 NFL players are thinking. The players are being asked to take a pay cut, by the owners, at the same time that the commissioner gets a 7 million dollar BONUS. Not salary. BONUS
Get ready for the year of discontentment.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
I just hope we win it this year
Because I think a lot of NFL players will be taking a year off next year.

This labor lawyer explains why there will not be a lockout but rather an extended court battle which is waged on the issue of Free agency and the Anti-trust laws

Well that is interesting news
Interesting for sure since the NFLPA is stating that a lock out is almost certain and Ocho is looking for a career in European soccer… I guess grandstanding is going to happen though.

I don't know when instant replay came into the league
But this sure looks like an instant replay 0f 1897-1992. Decertification of the players association, numerous lawsuits, and really POd players. Oh well. Out of my hands and control. I’m glad I don’t work in a front office of an NFL team. It would drive me even more nuts.

I'll say this I wouldn't want to be a coach.
Trying to get your players to care more about the games than their paychecks will not be easy.
