Randy Moss: a Viking in 2010?
A few days ago, Randy Moss said in an interview that he does not anticipate the Patriots re-signing him after the 2010 season. He further stated that he would like to be with a team that sees him as having a future with that team. In the past, Moss once stated that he has "unfinished business" in Minnesota.
While a Packer, Brett Favre once asked the front office to acquire Moss via trade. He was disappointed that they did not do so. If the Vikings can do one more thing to convince Brett Favre to return, besides upgrading the offensive line, acquiring Randy Moss might be it.
Moss's contract runs out after 2010. I don't know what he is scheduled to make, but it is probably in the same ballpark as Bernard Berrian's salary in 2010.
Moss's production was limited in 2010 due to a shoulder injury. He will be healthy in 2010.
Randy Moss's birthday was February 13, 1977. He is still only 33 years old. He remains on pace to shatter many of Jerry Rice's records, including touchdowns and receiving yardage. Last year ESPN said, based on reviewing a replay, Moss ran 40 yards down the field in a game in 3.8 seconds.
It was reported that while negotiating to buy the Vikings, Zygi Wilf requested that Randy Moss not be traded. Moss was traded to the Raiders after the 2004 season. Wilf wanted to keep Randy Moss.
Potential trade opportunity: Bernard Berrian for Randy Moss. I really like Bernard Berrian but I love Randy Moss.
Potentially, the offense would include: Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson, Sidney Rice, Percy Harvin, and Randy Moss. If they put eight in the box, Moss and Rice are in single coverage. If they put seven in the box, Peterson has one less defender to stop him.
This trade would likely be a positive for Berrian. He and Favre couldn't get on the same page this year (possibly due to Berrian's hamstring injuries). In New England, he would be Bernard Berrian again. Berrian is younger than Moss and would bring his professionalism and great athletic ability to the Patriots that need those exact things.

Um, problem is....
Moss still has a year left on his salary so he isnt a F.A. until after this coming season. While a trade would be possible with N.E. if Moss wanted to come back, no way would the Pats take Berrian. They would want someone younger (Rice, Harvin) or draft picks for Moss. Figuring our aging D line and secondary need tweaking and perhaps a QB too via the draft, I seriously don’t see us trading picks for him. I could see us going after McNabb if Favre decides to pull the plug as that is more of a concern then our WR’s are. Rice, Harvin and Shank did very well in that catagory last year so I don’t really see a glaring need to us to invest the picks we really need now for Moss trade.

Berrian
Berrian is age 29, younger than Moss. Furthermore, Berrian’s contract has four years remaining on it. Moss’s contract only has one. I see it as an even deal that helps both clubs.

I know Berrians age....
but I would almost bet they would want someone even younger, Rice or Harvin and still, you’re looking at a 1st round pick . And given that Berrian is 29 and doesn’t even come close to Moss in abilities, I seriously doubt that the Pats would really want him.

Exactly
And if we did a trade, that’s who they would want, not Berrian. This trade wont happen and that’s fine with me! With Rice and Harvin, we are just fine!

I would trade for Moss
and give Berrian to them as well as a pick maybe third round. Moss, Rice, Harvin, Favre are you KIDDING ME! Only problem is his attitude still blows and I don’t see Childress getting past that. Damn though it would be sweet to see Moss back in purple the year we win the super bowl. Could you imagine the media circus if we actually did sign him?
Of course the meter maids in Minneapolis would have to watch out, but hey I can live with that.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Don't get my hopes up
this is feasible, but it would require at least 1-2 second round picks and a third, there is nothing more i could wish for to happen. -—→
No way.
Why would Minnesota want an aging, distraction laden Randy Moss when the Vikings already have a very deep receiving corps with a few young guys waiting in the wings?
Receiver is not a position the Vikings need to worry about. At all. Not worth giving anything up for.
Skol Vikings!
Woot Woot!
dont see it happening. not via trade anyway.

Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

Vikings negotiating position
The Vikings are in a strong negotiating position. If the Vikings don’t make the trade, no problem. First, we’ve got Bernard Berrian. He’s great, and he will be back to 100% health next year. Expect a big year from him. If the Vikings have Berrian but not Moss, the Vikings will not shed tears. Instead we’ll be very excited about the 2010 season.
Second, Moss will be a free agent in 2011. The Vikings could just sign him then and not give the Patriots any compensation.
With this position, I don’t see how the Patriots could expect multiple draft picks, or a first rounder, or Berrian and a draft pick. If they want to part ways with Moss, and get a player or draft pick in return, now is their chance.
The Vikings have the upper hand here. Meanwhile, it’s not like the Patriots would even get a raw deal from this. Berrian is a very good receiver, and if they didn’t think Moss was professional enough, Berrian is the man for them. He is a consummate professional.
I would give the Patriots Berrian and a 1st without even thinking.
This draft is full of talent, and we could still have excellent players coming in in later rounds, so I wouldn’t mind AT ALL trading Berrian + a 1st for Moss.
Just think about it, Brett Favre + Randy Moss + Sidney Rice + Visanthe Shiancoe + Percy Harvin + Adrian Peterson + Purple People Eaters II + EJ + Leber + Greenway + Improved and more experienced secondary.
If we don’t get the Lombardi Trophy with that, we may just give up.

Gave me chills just thinking about it
However, Moss is still all about Moss or he wouldn’t be opening his mouth about this like he is.

Yeah...
I got so excited about the whole Moss thing that I totally forgot about CT. I also do believe we need him for this year, and it would be awesome to have him back.

WHY!!!!????
Why would you do this!!!!??? Randy Moss is my favorite viking EVER!!!! I literally cried when we traded him (Not kidding). Ugh! I hated the Vikings for a while after they traded him. Why would you do this to me?! Now I’m going to get my hopes up for number 84 back in purple and if it doesn’t happen I’m going to be sad again. (I’m half-heartedly joking BTW)
Oh, and if we get Moss, I’d have to change my User name. :l

I am a unabashed Moss fan (still the only jersey I own) and would love if it happened. I wouldn’t expect it to happen, but everything you’ve laid out seams pretty sound. I do agree with other posters that it may take slightly more than just Berrian to make them trade him, but if they want anything for Moss, they would have to trade him this year or attempt to sign him.
The Patriots would never ever trade Randy Moss to you guys for Bernard Berrian, I’m sorry. Maybe he’ll come as a FA after next year but a trade for him definitely won’t happen.
Yea we got Jared Allen
I think we can find a way to make a good trade!

Yeah, we won’t trade for him. But its possible he could become a FA this year still. I mean, they just franchised Wilfork. He’ll be getting paid. Brady is going to be wanting to get paid, and I doubt he’ll take a discount again, not after what happened to his knee. The Pats are getting pretty deep in player salaries, and, if Moss keeps spitting out these kind of interviews, they may decide to just release him to be done with it and save them a few dollars, and then we swoop him up.
But it is unlikely, yes.
Did you follow what went on in Foxboro this year?
If you did you might understand why they might be looking for a trade. There were issues. Randy’s half life is about up in Boston.
Yeah, I did. I wasn’t saying a trade would never happen, I was saying there is no way in hell the Patriots would ever trade Moss for Berrian. Moss >>>>>> Berrian, even as 33 year old. Berrian was way down this year, and when his speed starts declining which history would suggest will be in a year or two, Berrian will be completely ineffective.

He's right...
Berrian’s contract is, well, generous. And Belichick has stated numerous times he considers rookie-contract players the most valuable commodity in the game. So he’d want picks, not a 30-year-old WR with 4 years left on a bloated free agent deal. And the Vikings can’t afford to give up picks, anyway, IMO.
Go with the young guys. Always.
Moss is my favorite Viking of All Time
As much as in my “heart” I would love for this to happen, my head is saying it will not because New England is not that dumb. They need him worse than we do.
This is all wrong IMO.
The Vikings should try and get Brandon Marshall from Denver for Berrian & a 2nd or 3rd or 4th.
Marshall is just 25.
As much as I love Moss I would take Marshall, Rice, Harvin, AP, & Shiancoe all day.
Marshall? iam sorry that senario will not happen
I like Marshall but he comes with so much emotional baggage. they dont call him baby T.O. for nothing. Plus I dont see the vikings giving up that much for him. well thats just my opinion
"And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you!"
Way better than Marshal and sort of sad
but he’s less of a PITA as well.. I don’t hear a lot of good things about Marshal out of the locker room
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
funny
Favre pleaded for Randy Moss when he was on the Packers….
He may get his wish if he doesn’t retire. Then he could really stick it to Ted. haha..
Don't see it happening but.... remember who our coaches are
Moss is not as good as he once was. You can put all the talent you want on this team but you still have Brad C and the OC calling the plays…. See how the phone has been ringing off the hook for our Offensive coach to be a head coach. Everyone knows our offense design and calling stinks. It is the players that make the bubble screen on 3rd and 12 a first down. But the two do fit. BF practices when he wants to practice and Moss plays when he wants to play. It could be interesting but I do not see it happening. Then again if you told me 4 years ago 4 would be the Viking QB, I would not have believed that either.
Moss in Minnesota? Yes!
It would put my 98’ season nightmares finally to rest if we could win it this year with Randy back in purple.
David Chagoya
Hmmmmm....
Might be nice, but at little cost hopefully if it should happen….More pressing needs I think, w QB, O-line and D-Line and secondary?
For pure nostalgic reasons (and do think Moss would add to MN WR strength) would like to see…Oooof yes I salivating already! Come on next season!!!!!!!
I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

IMO.....The Patriots wont be trading R.Moss this year.
The Patriots are a SB-Caliber team with R.Moss. I’m sure he’ll be playing for the Patriots during the 2010 season, and possibly even longer.
If the Pats do trade Moss, I doubt they’ll trade him to the SB-Caliber Vikings, plus the Vikings play the Patriots this year, and I doubt the Patriots want that kind of embarrassment. :)
They may not want to trade him, but its WAY better for them to trade Moss than to have him there while he’s wishing to be somewhere else.
He wouldn’t produce half as much that way as he would in natural circunstances, so I do belive the Patriots would trade him if he request the trade and the offer is not bad.
SKÖL VIKINGS!
SHOW YOUR HORNS!
Either way
Moss will be playing against a former-team.
The difference is, we traded Moss like 7yrs ago.
I’m sure Randy will want to kick our butts much like he kicked the Cowboys butt’s back in 98’ for not drafting him.
I was unaware that Moss wanted out of NE
If that’s the case then yeah, NE will want to trade him. But I don’t see Moss wanting to leave T.Brady just so he can play with Favre for 1yr, and then have a rookie QB throwing to him after Favre retires.
The Patriots might trade Moss, but they’ll trade him to a team that’s willing to give up a couple, or a few high-end draft picks. IMO, the Vikings really aren’t in position to do that, they have too-many other needs…Anything is possible, but I just don’t see it happening.
Where's the...
Yea, I seem to being having trouble finding the “What have you been smoking” option on your poll.
Even if the Patriots somehow were persuaded to trade Randy Moss, what on EARTH could we get them to smoke to think that 33 year old Moss was a legitimate trade straight up for Berrian? I would be in favor of a trade for Moss but I guarantee that it would require somewhere in the vicinity of Berrian + a 2nd or 3rd round pick, not an either or kind of proposition.
No thanks
We’d rather have Bernard Berrian than trade that much for Randy Moss. Our underrated receiver is really good, and is healthy again. The Vikings will be very happy to see Berrian making plays in purple again in 2010.
by medicineball on Feb 23, 2010 4:44 PM CST up reply actions
Amen
I like Moss as well, but as you have said earlier, he should be had pretty cheap especially in the last year of his contract.
Berrian for Moss is a pretty legitimate heads up trade. Age, advantage Berrian. Contract status, advantage Berrian. Why would we need to give more?
I have 'Noticed'
A slight - annoyance by Bernard with Favre.
I think Bernard hates how Favre spreads the ball around so much. Bernard much think he is better, but Rice proved that he was better this year.
A Rice/Moss Duo would be awesome……
If that didn’t entice Favre’s return, I don’t know what would.
Bernard is one of the highest paid receivers we have. I nearly think we should look into trading him out regardless to have him replaced with someone that will fill his shoes for what he is worth.
I actually agree.
Wish we could trade him straight up for Brandon Marshal :)
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
I bet you would.
In actuality Marshal is a possession type receiver like Rice. Not a true Speedster like Berrian. He just looks fast because of his yards after the catch. If you want Marshal just step up to the FA plate and and give Denver your 1st and third draft pick. Unless they Franchise him that is what he is going to cost.
