Westbrook Released

I know the LT speculation has just started but Westbrook is probably even more plausible.  I know he's got the concussion issue but if he's past that problem he might be the perfect replacement for Chester.  As a third down pass catching back he has been one of the best in the league for years.  Add Chilly's familiarity with him as well as his love for ex-Philly players and I think this will happen.  Childress just has to go fishing with Reid and find out the inside story on the concussions, sign him to a friendly contract, and our backup running back position is filled and possibly upgraded.

This FanPost was created by a registered user of The Daily Norseman, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of the site. However, since this is a community, that view is no less important.

Upgrade?

It’s hard to say this would be an upgrade, which is why you said “possibly upgraded”. Personally I would rather re-sign Chester because we know what we have with him. Westbrook was severely limited last season, and to my knowledge, was nothing stellar when he did see the field.

Too much risk for a moderate reward.

by StuckInCA on Feb 23, 2010 1:51 PM CST reply actions

Can’t really argue with you about the risk factor. I would be very happy to have Taylor back but I think Westbrook could excel in Taylor’s role. My other point was that Chilly will have the inside track on the extent of his injuries and we might end up with a bargain. Westbrook has been a pro-bowl talent but with his durability issues he was never suited for the lead back role. Also, if we lose Chester we might actually be able to upgrade another area (DB’s) through free agency. Taylor’s the best free agent back out there this year and I don’t think we’re going to be able to hold onto him. Our options for his replacement are Young, released vets like LT and Westbrook, or the draft. Given those options I think Westbrook might be the best fit if Taylor leaves.

No to L.T. and Westbrook.

obviously the eagles knew he was done. He will be 31 before the season starts. Thats ancient for running backs. Lets try to bring back Chester or just go ahead with albert young.

Isnt chester pretty much the same age?

True, but LT has a lot more "natural" ability

Westbrook could excel as a third down running back

instead of pounding the ball 20 times a game, and taking countless hits, he’d be just fine!

Think of the possiblities!

Brett Favre
Randy Moss
Adrian Peterson
Brian Westbrook
Sidney Rice
Percy Harvin
Shincoe

I mean I would just cry when this squad stepped on the field!

But with that said, the good thing about this lineup is that we’d be set on offense so our Draft could go about 4-6 picks to defense!

I was thinking...

How cool would it to have Peppers replace R. Edwards too..

Focus on our O-line & D-backs for our draft.

by Deek on Feb 23, 2010 4:23 PM CST up reply actions

Don't forget an Offensive lineman

Westbrook vs Taylor, I hate to say it but I have to go with Chester. He’s an all purpose back that can fill the void if necessary. If AD gets injured this season who would you rather have backing him up? Westbrook who will be renting a bed next to AD soon or CT who eats glass and craps light bulbs?

Westbrook is a good back but so is Chester. Got to go with the grass is greener argument on this one.

However that line up would look a lot like what the skins try (and fail to do)

which is buy a Superbowl. Team chemistry is an imporant factor and the fact that CT knows the offense, how the line blocks, how the QB throws the ball all make measurable differences with a player. Now Moss, well dang it’s like dating that psycho who’s great in the sack every night your excited every morning your asking yourself why…

Think of the possibilities indeed

Brett Favre – Old as balls
Randy Moss – Prima donna
Adrian Peterson – Has Fumbilitis
Brian Westbrook – Sees three quarterbacks at a time
Sidney Rice – No negative comment, pure talent with this one.
Percy Harvin – Had a Migraine
Shincoe – Isn’t very attentive (since “he had no idea” Favre was getting hit so often in the NFC Championship he probably would not realize you were playing).

Good on you for reading the hidden message i had put in that previous post.

Time will tell. Should be interesting regardless.

And off of Rotoworld for you guys (looks like lots of people see the Westbrook fit):

Beat writer Judd Zulgad suggests the Vikings could be interested in Brian Westbrook if Chester Taylor departs via free agency.
It may be the most obvious fit at this stage of Westbrook’s career. He’s familiar with Brad Childress’ offense after their time together in Philly from 2002-05. It would give Westbrook a chance to play for a contender while filling Taylor’s third-down role behind Adrian Peterson.

Brett – Old as balls as he may be, he still had the best season of his carreer last season.

Moss – Prima donna as he may be, he said he still has unfinished business in MN, so I believe he would do his 100% for this team.

AP – Will work on that the offseason, he deserves the chance to prove everyone that said that wrong.

The others I will not even comment, as they are just ridiculous.

If Moss wants to return to Minny, it’s only for 1 reason;

He wants that ring. Pure and simple, and he didn’t get to NE in time to get one.

Jason Taylor

etc

Then we invent time travel, go back to 2006, and win it all.

Concussions

You don’t just “get past” a concussion that left you unconscious for four minutes or whatever it was. Even with the best of care, Westbrook’s career is probably over. He is a fierce competitor and probably refuses to admit it. I just don’t think he will ever be nearly the same.

Chester Taylor is the one we want.

Free Agency

Lets take a moment to review.

We can not sign a high priced free agent like Peppers ( top 8 rule)
We can sign players that were cut by their team ( like LT or Westbrook)
We can sign RFAs without restrictions ( but they cost draft picks)

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Feb 24, 2010 6:08 AM CST reply actions

I'll still take Chester over Westbrook or LT

But I’d prefer Westbrook over LT if we do have to replace Chester. I think either replacement option will probably be too costly, but Westbrook is obviously familiar with Chilly’s offense since they were together in Philly.

So CanadianVike, about that hockey game Sunday night… :)

by Eric J. Thompson on Feb 24, 2010 9:40 AM CST reply actions

Westbrook is now fragile

If Brian Westbrook plays in 2010, and takes one hit to his head and has a concussion, he will have to go on injured reserve or retire. Even if it’s Week 1 or training camp. Westbrook cannot rationally risk any more brain damage. Every concussion does permanent damage to the brain and the effects are cumulative. The first shot he took in 2009 was a wicked blow, and the second one was when his brain was still recovering from the other one.

Westbrook should retire at this time. He is lucky that everything has come back for him after getting knocked out cold for four minutes. If he takes another vicious shot to the head, he could literally die. After Korey Stringer, I don’t want to read the news one day that a Viking died in the line of duty or anything like that ever again.

Concussions are no joke. Merril Hoge had to re-learn how to read when he retired from the NFL due to concussions he suffered. Aikman was lucky to get out with his health intact. Steve Young too.

We don’t want to put anyone at risk, and we can’t put our team at risk by investing heavily in one guy who might miss half the year or more when we really need that guy in uniform to protect Brett Favre and spell Adrian Peterson.

If we lost Chester Taylor, and nobody we’ve already got can pass-block well enough, and no rookie we draft can either, then we should try to get LT or some other vet. Not Westbrook.

This is the same reasoning I’ve got with Jahvid Best, by the way.

by medicineball on Feb 24, 2010 5:02 PM CST reply actions

Agree with you 100% on that MB

If Chester leaves, LT is a better option. No injury concern. LT would be able to be an every down back if needed, not just a 3rd down back.

With all that being said, if Chester does leave, I think we are set with Young and Johnson.

"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."
