Antrel Rolle to be released

by Cardinals to test free agency

i know the vikings are hampered in their free agent signings, but if we get rolle at safety that would be huge.  Rolle as far as I know is one of the premiere safeties in the league.  Every viking fan knows that madieu and tyrell did not cut it last year and safety was mainly the problem in teh secondary.  ROlle would fill that hole.  A good safety can help the cb when he gets beat.  LAst year if the CB's got even beat a little, and couldn't recover, the safety on that side was no where to be found.  Signing Rolle should be a top priority.

ej and cedric's health are first priority

rolle was a definate factor in what i believe was brett’s most difficult secondary match us. he fits brad’s multipositional role. a future draft pick like myron could add even more needed depth. our backups other than jamarca are nothing more than special team bodies.

Rolle not available to the Vikings

The Vikings are not allowed to sign a free agent this year, except in limited circumstances ( top 8 rule).

If we lose a free agent then we can sign a free agent. But we can not pay more to the new FA than the player we lose gets from their new team. We have no player that will get offered the kind of money Rolle will be offered.

Every time one of these high priced FAs come on the market Viking fans get excited. Relax. This year we will have to build through the draft.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Mar 1, 2010 7:53 AM CST reply actions

Actually Rolle is available

The final eight restrictions don’t apply to players who are released/cut from their teams. So anybody who gets released for having bad contracts like Rolle, Westbrook, and LT is available to us. With the uncapped year teams can basically cut any huge contracts they want to with little or no penalty. Essentially we could sign Rolle for big money and cut Madieu Williams contract if we wanted too. We could actually keep both if Zygi was on board.

by CanadianViking on Mar 1, 2010 11:58 AM CST up reply actions

I am reading that Rolle's contract is up and he is a free agent. By being cut a player has to have a contract that isn't expiring.

Are you reading something different? When they talk about him being released they mean a tag ( franchise or transition) wasn’t placed on him. LT and Westbrook were cut. Rolle is an UFA. Therefore the top 8 rule applies.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Mar 1, 2010 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

Rolle

Is available. He is not eligle for tagging being his is under contract for the 2010 season. If he is cut, he is available to the highest bidder without exception.

by LoveHate on Mar 1, 2010 12:16 PM CST up reply actions

Actually his contract isn't up

They owe him 12 million for next year. I"m not sure how he can be a free agent if they are terminating his contract before it expires on it’s own. Of course they could be using free agent as a generic term for anyone who is open to any and all tenders.

I don’t know, it would be nice to pick him up, he will surely be less expensive than Nnamdi and we won’t have to trade anything to pick him up. Man Oakland can’t be happy. Hre they are putting a top notch CB on the block for trade and two others drop into free agency. They just can’t seem to catch a break.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 1, 2010 12:20 PM CST up reply actions

I agree. See my post below for details.

This is much better than giving up picks. Plus you can negotiate a new contract with the guy before signing him.
Since it is apparent that many teams are looking to dump high salary players in the uncapped year it gives one pause to think that the Vikings will probably not get caught up in spending huge sums on free agents. It goes with my theory that the NFL Owners are going to spend less money to prove to the players that they can not afford to operate under the old contract. Nevertheless, it is true that Ziggy has spent money in the FA market each year.

Also, I don't think this team is geared to expensive safeties

that’s just me, but I don’t think Frazier needs crazy expensive safeties in his back field. I think his system would nueter them and make us hate them as well.

We truly hope not.

by lifelongvike on Mar 1, 2010 9:28 PM CST up reply actions

I understand what your saying

and I get frustrated watching our defense bend not break and hope for big plays from the line. It looks like he relies on luck at times to get the defense working but somehow it does actually work. I would like to see our passing D work out better, but when pretty much everyone in the league is scared to run against you, you end up taking a lot of passes.

I would really like Rolle for this very reason, he would make a low impact (except to the cap) next year we’lll be with out Phat Pat and Favre so we should have some room to maneouver (even though we’ll have to dish out salaries to AD, Rice and Greenway)

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

I was wrong about Rolle not being available

Here is the article that says he will not be a UFA. He is available to the Vikings.
My apologies to CanadienViking.

A few things to remember about Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle as he prepares to finally hit the market when, as expected, Arizona declines to pay a $4 million roster bonus:

    * Rolle’s contract will essentially be terminated with one season remaining once the Cardinals decline to pay the bonus this week;
    * Rolle will then be subject to waivers, according to an NFL general manager I consulted during Super Bowl week;
    * Rolle will be able to sign with another team once he clears waivers;
    * Rolle will not qualify as an unrestricted free agent, an important distinction for a few reasons: teams that lose UFAs can qualify for compensatory draft choices a year later; Final Eight teams can become eligible to sign UFAs from other teams with less restrictions; and UFAs with Rolle’s level of experience would revert to restricted free agents in an uncapped year;

We have much more pressing needs at other positions.

Yes, Antoine is getting older and Cedric got injured… But Antione is still there, Asher Allen should be up to speed, Sapp has proven to be a sufficient fill-in guy, Tyrell picked it up a bit and Madieu can compete with Jamarca Sanford to light a fire under his ass.

We have enough players at CB/S that can contribute, we need depth but not starters.

I think QB, DT and LB are a little more pressing.

by Bjorno on Mar 1, 2010 1:12 PM CST reply actions

DT and LB

are deep in teh draft

Cb’s and Safeties are hit and miss, cause sometimes its hard for them to adjust to the NFL and the more powerful wide receivers

when u get a chacne to sign a top safety at a postition where u are weak u take advantage
especially since teh vikes are limited in who htey can sign in the first place (due to top 8 rule)

by YanksVikes on Mar 1, 2010 4:41 PM CST up reply actions

DT and LB are deep in teh draft

Yes, which is why we should be able to find good options in the second and third round.

But that first round pick should be spent on a Quarterback. Whether it is in a trade or as a pick, we need a quarterback.

The year is uncapped right?

Or is that 2011?

It is uncapped

And we should have more room to move next year (I dont’ see Pat and Favre coming back after next year) However, we do have some big signings in 2011 (if we actually play) with Greenway, Rice and Peterson all on tap to be making big/decent money.
The real question is, will Wilf spend a crap load of money in an uncapped year with the hopes of winning big when he has the lowest producing stadium in the league…

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 2, 2010 10:40 AM CST up reply actions

Ahh, should have paid more attention. For some reason I thought this was a trade discussion.

I still think signing rolle might not be a great idea, but it can’t hurt.

by Bjorno on Mar 4, 2010 10:23 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

So? He doesn't require a draft pick, we don't need to lose a FA

This could be done instead of picking a CB in round one. Then we can pick up Clausen at 30 instead. Not seeing the issue here. This actually helps our team on multiple levels. We get a top shelf CB, we open up another of our draft picks for something else other than a CB so we have more options. Rolle can play both safety and cb by the way.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 2, 2010 8:14 AM CST up reply actions

If Clausen and McCoy were both on the board at 30..

Who would you take? That would be tough for me. I think in the end, I would have to look at the fact that McCoy was much more successful.

"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. I don't see McCoy making it to 30.

Not even if I write to Santa and tell him I’ve been a good boy. If he somehow did make it I think we’d be stupid not to pick him up. Clausen is sort of a reach in the first round for us as it is, so I doubt we’ll be picking him up.

Looks like more shoe string catches in 2011.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 2, 2010 10:42 AM CST up reply actions

McCoy will be there at #30. Clausen won't.

Both Jacksonville and Denver pick at #10-11. After them the only teams that will be targeting a QB might be Arizona. If Clausen falls past #11 look for the Vikes. Arizona or Carolina to move up to grab him. Colt is small and weak armed. Rarely would a team spend a high 1st round pick on that type of player. If he is evaluated as being a “franchise guy” by our coaches they can get him at #30, some say even #64. It is rumored that St.Louis or Denver might be interested in him with their 2nd pick.

The only knock on Clausen seems to be Todd McShay saying he has a punk attitude and won’t cut it when things get rough with a bad team. No one (not even McShay) says he hasn’t the talent to be the #1 QB of the class.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by Grime on Mar 2, 2010 11:47 AM CST up reply actions

Ok. So we agree again. If Clausen is there at #30 pick him up.

And although I personally don’t think Colt is a “NFL franchise QB” I do understand how some might think he is. I can see a team like Denver using him effectively. They really like to throw short passes and get tons of YAC. If they get him in the 2nd round watch out. But the knock on Orton was he couldn’t get the ball downfield.
Ouch my head is spinning. Its early but I think I need a drink. At least down here I can sit on the Lanai and enjoy the sunshine while I dream about the draft and how it will help the Vikings.

In my limited evaluation

I like McCoy over Clausen. From a physical perspective, theyre about even. Both under 6’3", both have questionable arm strength. McCoy is actually more accurate and quicker of the two.

So now you look at the intangibles:
McCoy is a winner. He makes his teammates better. McCoy has no issues regarding passion, attitude or work ethic. McCoy is a high character kid.

"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Most scouts

Think McCoy’s skill set is best suited for the WCO.

Well I have heard this weak armed talk about Clausen before.

The only thing I can find to back it up was a written statement that he was weaker than Stafford but stronger than Sanchez.. McCoy on the other hand does not have the arm strength to throw the out route with power in the NFL. Big difference I think. Their is a reason one is considered a top prospect and the other is not.
But I think Colt could be a great NFL QB. But I don’t see him in the mold of the QBs Chilly likes. Big strong athletic QBs. McNabb, Farve, even T-Jack like.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Mar 2, 2010 2:04 PM CST up reply actions

I always wondered about that

The way his offense is set up he doesn’t use a lot of the deep ball. I’m sure he likes to have it there just in case, but he really does look like he’s more into accurate, pocket passers.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 2, 2010 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

I think he likes a lot of zip on his shorter routes.

Strong armed guys can do that. Not so with weaker, and often more accurate, throwers. A guy like Stafford that can do both. Wow, what a treat to have. Zac Robinson has both. But people knock him for being a shotgun QB. Like Colt, Tebow, Bradford, LeFevour and 80% of the rest of them.

Wouldn’t it be nice if someone published a “how to evaluate a QB” form? Then everybody would be on the same page except for intangibles.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Mar 2, 2010 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

Some of the best QB's of all time are known

For their accuracy rather than their arm strength:

Unitas
Montana
Manning

But ya, there’s more than one way to skin a cat evaluate a QB.

"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

Yeah I hear that. They would make a mint if it worked.

Problem is, that different teams actually want different types of QB’s Of course every team wants the accuracy of Marino, with the arm of Farve, the feet of Cunningham, the brains of Manning and the guts of Montana.

But then I want to marry Jessica Alba. I think we’re both screwed…

I think toughness, leadership, and confidence

Are probably the most underrated qualities when looking at what makes a QB great.

All you have to do is look at #4. He has horrible mechanics, and even worse footwork. But what sets him apart? The fact that he hasn’t missed a game since the JFK administration, he isn’t afraid to make any throw, and because he’s so tough and confident people want to play with him.

"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. by NMVike on Mar 2, 2010 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

Actually the biggest difference between the two

Is that people some scouts feel that Clausen is more day-one ready having played in a “pro-style” offense at ND.

I think Childress will take any QB’s that are unTJack like at this point, meaning one who gives the team a legit chance.

Bad timing for that joke? What do you think Grime?

Rolle expected to go back to the Cardinals

Apparently the release of Rolle is to viod his contract. The team wants him back but wants to renegotiate. If he clears waivers then the Cards will be the first team to negotiate with him. I guess that makes sense.

But Bjorna, this QB thing. If the coaching staff and scouts have decided that this is a very weak QB class and that no one after the top two are worth drafting then we can’t waste a draft pick. Its not unusual to have only two good QBs in one class. I don’t see anybody out there better than T-Jack to trade for so I think they will sit on their hands unless they have identified someone great in the draft. Relax, ths coaching staff has done great so far.

coincidence

I just happened to look up the 2005 NFL draft today.

After the Vikings took Troy Williamson 7th overall, the Cardinals drafted Antrel Rolle 8th. (The player I wanted the Vikings to draft instead of TWill, Shawne Merriman, was drafted 12th overall by the Chargers.)

If the Vikings could bring in Antrel Rolle, that would be kind of an expensive re-do of that draft.
